I don't own the hero's of Olympus series.
This is was Octavian's master plan to destroy the Greeks. (And why it failed. Horribly.) Basically, I compiled all the information on Octavian in 'The Son of Neptune', and I put it in chronological order. I also tried to make it funny. So… enjoy?
I guess it all started when Octavian was sent to Camp Jupiter by his parents in New Rome. It was most likely here that he learned that the Roman's hated the Greeks. And when he found that out, he took it very seriously.
It was from then on that he made it his personal mission to abolish any last remnants of the Greek world they left behind. In other words, he threw a hissy fit every time someone did or said anything that could even be remotely considered Greek.
Being a descendant of Apollo, he had the gift of prophecy. So, Reyna and Jason (the praetors) made him the auger (Camp Jupiters version of the oracle). While the auger traditionally used animal guts to see the future, Reyna decided to go for a more humane approach, and told Octavian to use stuffed animals instead. Which only accomplished two things.
1, constant complaints of, "I should be able to use real animals! It's the traditional Roman way!"
And 2, it only made him look even more insane than he already was. "Stop calling me an Oracle! I'm not Greek!" And, "What do you mean, Terminus! I need the knife for my readings!"
But other than the constant complaining, Octavian could only accomplish so much. (To Octavians dismay and everyone else's great joy.) He couldn't make any real changes because he just simply didn't have the power.
Octavian realized the only way he could make the necessary changes, was to become praetor! There was just one… no. More like five problems with that. But don't worry. (Nobody was worried about Octavian.) We'll solve them one by one.
The camp already had two praetors. There weren't any openings.
This alone would say to anyone that even trying to become praetor would be virtually impossible. Well, anyone except Octavian. (He's a stubborn little B!$#). So, he tried to get rid of the two praetors by blaming things on them. That don't work very well because, for one, there wasn't much going on for him to blame on them. And two, everyone could see he was trying too hard when he started to claim that him running out of toilet paper was Reyna's fault.
Octavian was the only one suited to be the auger. If he became praetor, there would be no one to replace him.
Octavian didn't come up with a solution to this one. He just didn't care about that, I guess.
So there he was, desperately trying to manipulate the legions every chance he got, when Jason went missing.
Oh. Gods. Yes.
That really sucked that Jason was gone. But Octavian on the other hand, was ecstatic. Jason going missing was the best thing that could've happened to him. It eliminated the only thing stopping him (that he actually cared about). But with this new opening, a new problem arose that he hadn't even considered before. Reyna.
She would do anything and everything in her power to stop Octavian from becoming praetor, because she knew just what he would do with that kind of power. And even if he did manage to reach praetorship, Reyna would still be in the lead, and people would rather follow her command than his. But he decided to cross that bridge when he got to it and focused all his attention on manipulating the council.
Eight months later, Percy showed up. Wich Octavian did not like.
Octavian was one of the few people who knew that the Lare's could tell the difference between Roman and Greek campers. So, when many of them started calling Percy a gracius, Octavian instantly did not trust him.
It only got worse when Percy was told by Mars to go on a quest with Frank and Hazel. Not only was Frank on probation so Octavian complained he couldn't lead a quest, and he definitely couldn't suddenly become not on probation just for the quest.
Octavian also realized that, because the quest was to retrieve the golden eagle, either Frank, Percy, or Hazel could become praetor if they succeed in their quest instead of Octavian.
So now his goal became stopping them from going on a quest.
But then he realized something. If the majority of the council disagrees with the praetor, the praetor will be forced to comply. Maybe he could kill two birds with one stone and get both Percy and Reyna out of the way.
So, in a matter of minutes, Octavian pulled a full 180 and went from being quest, to making sure it happened.
But here's how: Octavian would make sure the quest happened, but he would also convince everyone that the quest was Reynas idea, and that he didn't want the quest would happen because he knew it would fail, but he was going along with it because he was just so loyal. He manipulated everyone. Which is not good. By doing this, if the quest failed, all the blame would be on Reyna, and the council would be less likely to trust her, and more likely to trust Octavian. So then if Reyna passed a judgment that Octavian didn't like, everyone else would side with Octavian and Reyna would be forced to comply. Judgments such as, who the praetor should be, and whether or not Reyna should be praetor.
You see where I'm going with this?
We see this happen during the meeting where it was decided what to do about the quest. But Octavian (unfortunately) is not a complete idiot. He knows that his entire plan is riding on the fact that the quest for the legion's standard might fail because it failed last time, so he wanted to make sure it did fail. He did this by giving them…
Absolutely nothing.
Octavian did not allow them any supplies for their quest because he wanted them to do it "the Roman way. And they should wast supplies on a quest destined to fail." Which is just absolute bull—.
Now, Reyna isn't stupid. She knows exactly what Octavian is trying to do. So, she insists on at least giving them a boat because not even the greatest Roman heroes were sent without any supplies. Which is very reasonable. Octavian on the other hand… well he's the same as he's always been. A complete jerk.
…
So now lest fast forward to after the quest when Frank Percy and Hazel return with the golden eagle, a hellhound, a cyclops, a harpy, and a hundred pounds of imperial gold around and weapons. Legends.
You see, Octavian forgot to take into account just how powerful this group of demigods are. So when they finally return from the quest, Octavian is completely bewildered from the simple fact that they were even alive.
…
Then, during the final battle with the giants, Octavian tried to send a missile towards Leo to kill him because he was a Greek, while he was on his way to kill Gaia. But he was so blinded by pride and revenge (what there was to avenge I have no idea) that he didn't realize his clothes snagged on the missile even when Nico tried to tell him, and thus, Octavian died. (Hooray!)
Well, that's one theory. The other would be very similar to this only Octavian just wanted power and used hating the Greeks as a cover. I don't agree with this, because Leo being Greek was the reason Octavian shot the missile at him, and he had nothing else to gain from it. It especially doesn't make sense because he was so stubborn about it that he died trying to do it. So, it doesn't make sense for him to do it for no reason.
So that was Octavians plan. What do you think?
