Chapter Sixteen
A new morning dawns. While Eda was cooking whatever, Danielle had made a quiche with mushrooms and bacon for everyone. Sitting down at the table, Danielle happily reads a textbook while eating.
"Danielle…" said King, staring at Danielle as he eats. "You've been reading that textbook all morning. Don't forget our little grooming session, this tail doesn't puff itself on its own."
"Don't worry King," said Danielle, scratching King's cheek. "I'll still be able to do it today."
"Yes, please," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "The less shed fur around the place, the better."
"Hey question," said King, looking at Danielle. "Why do you do your homework the minute you get back from Hexside?"
"The sooner its done, the sooner I can do whatever I want afterwards and not worry about it not being done," replied Danielle, looking at King before the alarm on the crystal ball went off. "Looks like its school time, see you two later."
Putting on her boots, Danielle heads out the back door towards Hexside. The moment she got to school, Danielle had to dodge a bunch of pixies. Pixies were every where around Hexside. Seeing Principal Bump, Danielle runs over.
"Principal Bump, what's going on?" asked Danielle, swatting a pixie away. "Is this some sort of school event?"
"No, it's not. It's an infestation," replied Principal Bump, swatting a pixie away as well. "Until further notice, school is cancelled."
"Okay… aah! Wait, no! Shoo, go away!" shouted Danielle, running away from a bunch of pixies back to the Owl House. "Darn pixies. Hey guys."
"Hey, you're…" said Eda, seeing Danielle at the back door.
"You're back! I didn't miss you at all," said King, climbing on top of Danielle's head before growling at her hood.
"Pixie infestation," said Danielle, shaking the pixies hiding in her hood out. "School's cancelled. Looks like I can do your grooming earlier than usual."
"Yes!" said King, nuzzling into Danielle's hair.
"Hey! Guess what's been in my mouth that I'm about to throw up!" said Hooty, gagging for several long moments before letters and a box were regurgitated. "The mail!"
"Hooty, ew," said Danielle, disgusted by the action as well as Eda and King.
"Junk, junk, death hex," said Eda, riffling through the mail. "Oh, a carnival's in town today!"
"Never been to a carnival but I have been to a fair," said Danielle, eyes sparkling. "Dad would always find a way for us to go every year."
"Carnivals bring crowds and crowds bring suckers. This could be the perfect chance to try out my new get-witch-quick scheme," said Eda, grabbing her staff out of the pot and shaking goop off it. "I'm in! To the carnival!"
"An adventure with friends! I'll go pack my stuff!" said Hooty, leaving the kitchen.
"Let's go before Hooty packs his stuff," said Eda, pushing Danielle out the back door.
"How would Hooty even leave?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda. "He's attached to the house."
"It's best not to know right now," replied Eda, mounting her staff with Danielle and King before taking off. "Trust me."
Flying towards Bonesborough, the carnival is seen. Landing near the gates, everyone dismounts the staff and walk the rest of the way.
"Well, here we are, kids," said Eda, stopping at the gates. "Look at all that fresh meat."
"This is bigger than the fair I've went to," said Danielle, swatting a fly away.
"No games for you, Owlbert, we've got scams to run," said Eda, stopping Owlbert from flying off.
"Friends! Welcome!" said Tibbles, jumping in front of everyone. "I see you got my postcard."
"Tibbles? You sent this?" asked Eda, holding out the postcard.
"Mm-hmm," said Tibbles, mimicking the little dance on the card.
"I thought you were still mad at us for destroying your stand," said Danielle, crossing her arms over her chest and staring at Tibbles suspiciously.
"Ooh, and destroying his life!" said King, pointing his finger at Tibbles. "That was the best part!"
"No, no, no. I should thank you. After my stand was destroyed, I reevaluated my life and found my true calling! I'm now ringmaster of..." said Tibbles, before snapping a whip. "Tibbles's Tent of Tiny Terrors!"
"Watch it with that whip," said Danielle, glaring at Tibbles before seeing a tiny aquarium with tiny animals.
"Honey, I shrunk the kids. I had to get that out."
"I don't buy it," said Eda, sending her staff away. "What kind of con are you running?"
"No cons here, Owl Lady, only pros. In fact, why don't we toast our newfound friendship with this totally innocent bottle of water," said Tibbles, holding out a bottle.
"There's the kick," said Danielle, figuring out what the voice meant. "Shrinking potion."
"What?" said Eda, grabbing the potion and dumping it on Tibbles hat, shrinking it. "Someone is still angry about their stand."
"Damn that human," thought Tibbles, eyeing Danielle.
"Now with that out of the way," said Eda, knocking over some vendor's stuff before transforming the stand. "Beat it loser! Step right up to... Eda's Human Horror House! Humans shed their skin and I've got proof."
"Eep!" said Danielle, blushing as she sees Eda hold up one of her lacey socks.
"You should really put a lock on your closet," said King, looking at Danielle.
"Eda!" said Danielle, running over and grabbing her sock. "Can you please not go through my clothes? I only brought a certain amount with me."
"Alright," said Eda, looking at Danielle. "Go have fun with King."
"Okay, come on King," said Danielle, grabbing King's hand and walking through the carnival. "What should we do first?"
"Ooh, what's that?" asked King, running up to a prize booth. "Ah! Some kind of deadly string weapon."
"No, it's not," said Danielle, grabbing the friendship bracelets on display. "These are friendship bracelets."
"Is that a type of deadly weapon?" asked King, looking at Danielle.
"Not a weapon," replied Danielle, stroking King's cheek. "They're a decorative bracelet given by one person to another as a symbol of friendship, that is strong and everlasting."
"Ooh! That's way safer than becoming blood brothers!" said King, looking at Danielle. "Danielle, we must have those bracelets!"
"And yoink," said the Prize Vendor, grabbing the friendship bracelets back. "Sorry, ma'am. If your bone son wants these bracelets you'll have to play the games and win the tickets. You know, carnival rules."
"Beat up the man and steal his things for me," said King, tugging on Danielle's coat.
"We could just play the games," said Danielle, pointing to some nearby games. "Let's go."
"Oh, okay," said King, grabbing Danielle's hands.
"Danielle!" said Willow, running over to Danielle.
"Hey, Danielle!" said Gus, running over as well.
"Hey guys," said Danielle, waving to Willow and Gus. "You're here too?"
"I got an invitation from Tibbles," said Willow, holding up the postcard.
"We figured it's a trap since we squashed his stand with a walking house," said Gus, looking at Danielle.
"And it was," said Danielle, rubbing the back of her neck. "He was gonna shrink us with a potion."
"Oh…" said Willow, stunned before getting excited. "This place has a Scarris wheel."
"It's like a human Ferris wheel but it gives you long-lasting nightmares," said Gus, excited as well.
"After seeing so many things here in your realm," said Danielle, massaging her forehead. "I should be able to handle this Scarris wheel."
"Ahem," said King, gaining Danielle's attention.
"Sorry about that King," said Danielle, looking at King. "Think we could do some rides alongside the games?"
"I don't see why not," said King, looking at Danielle.
"King wants a specific prize before the end of the day," said Danielle, looking at Willow and Gus.
"Oh! We can help with that," said Willow, looking at Danielle.
"Aw. Does the little guy wanna win a prize? Uh, does he? Uh, does he?" said Gus, cooing as he wiggles his finger in front of King before Danielle harshly bent his finger. "Ow!"
"Don't do that again," said Danielle, glaring at Gus before letting go of his finger. "King obviously didn't like that neither did I."
"Okay," said Gus, holding his finger.
"How bout it King?" asked Danielle, looking at King. "We can get the tickets faster this way and any spare tickets we have we can use for something else all four of us can have."
"That actually sounds… pretty good," said King, being unsure at first before wagging his tail happily. "Games that a way!"
"Let's getting going then," said Danielle, holding King's hand and gesturing Willow and Gus to follow.
All four cheer as they slightly jog to the nearest game booth. Skee-balls rolling in four different lanes, tickets procured. Though at one point the machine tried to spit the ball back at King only for Danielle to grab it and toss it back into the machines mouth harshly. Two fried orbs were procured with one being shared between Willow and Gus and the other between Danielle and King. Coming upon a pop the polyp booth, Danielle had to lift King on the booth so he could actually play the game. More tickets were procured from the game. Danielle had to freeze the bottles in place during a ring toss. During the whole course, Willow was able to explain about the pixie infestation being that Boscha's pet pixie got loose. King clung to Danielle when they rode the Scarris wheel.
"Wow, that was actually how you mentioned it Gus," said Danielle, soothingly rubbing King's back after the Scarris wheel ride. "Wonder how many tickets we procured so far for the friendship bracelets."
"Let's go back then," said Willow, looking at Danielle. "The vendor can count them."
"Well, they're right there," said Danielle, walking over and placing the tickets down alongside the others. "Do we have enough for the friendship bracelets here?"
"Nope," said the Prize Vendor, staring at the number of tickets. "No where near a million."
"A million!" said Danielle, shocked by the amount before thinking. "I could make a friendship bracelet for King faster with the crafts I have."
"That's a lot," said King, looking at Danielle. "Isn't it?"
"Yes, it is," replied Danielle, looking at King.
"I know we've been on the Scarris wheel," said Gus, looking at Danielle. "But I want to go on more rides. Like the bumper carcasses, the triple swing and the three-man cauldron spinner."
"Games!" said King, glaring at Gus.
"Carcasses!" said Gus, staring at King.
"That's enough you two," said Danielle, stepping between King and Gus. "We've done games and at least one ride so far. Can I choose the next one?"
"But…" said King, staring at Danielle.
"I've done games with you King and I've done the Scarris wheel for Gus and Willow," said Danielle, looking at the three. "I'd at least like to have at least a choice at one thing while we're here."
"That's sounds fair," said Willow, looking at Danielle. "Where do you want to go?"
"The House of Mirrors," replied Danielle, pointing at the attraction.
"Can we go back to the games afterwards?" asked King, looking at Danielle. "I still want those friendship bracelets."
"Of course," said Danielle, holding King's hand as they walk towards the House of Mirrors.
"Yeah, I'm going to need to be brushed when we get back," said King, seeing his reflection in one of the mirrors. "Awful mirror made me look puffier than normal."
"King, look at this one," said Danielle, pointing to her reflection in a mirror. "I'm a cat in this one."
"And a skeleton in another," said King, pointing to another mirror.
"Wait," said Gus, looking at King's reflection of his skeleton. "Your skeleton highly resembles the isles but without the wings and much smaller."
"I am the King of Demons," said King, staring at Gus. "Not a Titan."
"King is so a Titan. I just fear that day is all."
"I look like a flower person in this one," said Danielle, seeing another reflection of herself. "Oh my gosh, I'm an anime character in this one, yes!"
"Cool, your hair is like a dark blue color," said King, before seeing his reflection as well. "Oh, purple for me. Whoa… hey, what's this?"
"A cord?" said Danielle, untangling King's foot and slightly tugging the cord only for a bucket of purple liquid to splash on everyone. "The heck?! Whoa… Tibbles."
"We shrunk," said Willow, looking at everyone.
"That pig is bacon once I'm through with him," said Danielle, slightly angry before Tibbles approached them.
"You destroyed generations of Grimm Hammer history, when you destroyed my stand," said Tibbles, grabbing everyone. "Now it's time to pay."
"Dangit!" said Danielle, squirming around in Tibbles grip. "I can't reach any of my glyphs."
"Where is he taking us?" asked Gus, seeing Tibbles enter a tent before being tossed in an aquarium with everyone.
"This is that tiny aquarium from before," said Danielle, looking around.
"Welcome to the greatest show on the Boiling Isles!" said Tibbles, spotlights hitting the aquarium. "Will these witches and demon survive feeding time? Let's find out!"
"He's been starving these poor creatures," said Danielle, seeing the animals come out of a tent before setting off a plant glyph, leaving various crops in front of them. "Come on, eat up. Just not us."
"Quick thinking Danielle," said Willow, watching the animals eat the food. "But how do we get back to normal?"
"Okay, what did the textbook say about shrinking potions?" asked Danielle, remembering a certain potion class. "The potion that was splashed on us was purple in color so… dangit, we have to get Tibbles to tap his cheeks."
"Tap his cheeks, eh," said King, running towards the wall of the aquarium and setting off a plant glyph, climbing the vines.
"King, wait, no," said Danielle, running towards King as he sets off another plant glyph making a flowery glider. "Get down from there."
"Look, Danielle, I'm sorry," said King, staring at Danielle. "I got jealous when Willow and Gus showed up. I just wanted it to be just you and me today."
"King," said Danielle, looking at King.
"I know you'll eventually find your mom and go home and now you're spending more time at school," said King, getting a little emotional. "I just... wanna be around you!"
"King…" said Danielle, getting emotional herself before King jumped off the aquarium. "King, wait!"
"Weh…" said King, gliding down and landing on Tibbles cheek. "Alright, tap those cheeks and not the other ones."
"Darn flies," said Tibbles, tapping where King landed. "Oh no."
"Oh no is right," said Danielle, back to normal size as well as the other, setting off a wood glyph and yielding a wooden bat.
"You will pay for this!" said Tibbles, taking out another bottle of shrinking potion before Danielle smashed it out of his hands. "Ow!"
"Oh, no, Tibbles. That's not how entertainment works," said Eda, from behind Tibbles and dumping a bunch of caramel crab-apples on him. "The bad guy always gets his just desserts."
"Oh, no! Not desserts!" said Tibbles, covered in caramel crab-apples.
"Hey, girls," said Eda, getting the animals attention. "This one's on the house."
"Looks like we ruined his life for a second time," said Willow, watching Tibbles be chased by the animals.
"We're on a roll," said Gus, smiling.
"I'm sorry, Danielle," said King, being picked up by Danielle. "Demons do crazy things when they've been missing somebody."
"It's okay King," said Danielle, hugging King. "We'll figure something out where it's just you and me, okay."
"Okay," said King, nuzzling into DAnielle.
Ending the carnival day at that point, everyone heads home. By the time, Eda, Danielle and King got back to the Owl House, they hear Hooty talking to someone.
"Boy, fly, we sure get into some wacky hijinks, don't we? Sure feel sorry for anyone that missed seeing us two rabble-rousers getting into scrapes," said Hooty, not noticing the others slowly closing the door with uneasy faces. "Good thing I brought a camera. Yep. Hooty and fly. Together forever. You and me. Every single day… Now I know what friendship taste like. Yum. Taste like a bug."
"That's ingrained in my memory now," said Danielle, rubbing her forehead.
Owl Pellet #12
"Hey, Danielle," said King, entering her bedroom. "What are you making?"
"Well, since you weren't able to get those friendship bracelets," said Danielle, grabbing King's hand and tying a bracelet around it. "I thought you would like a homemade one. What'cha think?"
"Weh…" said King, staring longingly at the bracelet before hugging Danielle. "Thank you, Danielle."
"You're welcome, King," said Danielle, hugging King back. "Now, let's get to that grooming."
"Yes!" said King, seeing the wooden circular brush in Danielle's hand.
