The atmosphere around the Vertress Conference was electric with excitement, but it wasn't just the battles that were getting Ash's heart racing. As he walked through the bustling corridor of the stadium, he was suddenly confronted by an unexpected face from his past, Gary Oak.

Ash had last seen Gary when he was just ten years old, and at that time, Gary had been something of a childhood rival. However, their relationship had often been one-sided, with Gary constantly belittling Ash and his skills as a Pokemon Trainer. This dynamic left Ash with feelings of inadequacy and frustration. Gary was the epitome of a cocky, self-assured trainer, and their interactions had been filled with taunts and jibes.

The encounter was shocking to Ash. Ash had moved to Opelucid City years ago and cut off contact with him, and all of his bullies back in Pallet Town. Ash had never expected to see him in Unova, let alone competing in the Vertress Conference. But the shock soon transformed into anger as he recalled the many times Gary's words and actions had stung.

Gary, sporting his trademark smirk, issued a challenge in his usual confident tone, "Hey, Ashy-boy, how about you aim for the Top 4? I'll be waiting for you."

Ash's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. He felt a surge of anger, a torrent of memories of Gary's taunts rushing back to him. The hurt, the frustration, the times he had felt inferior in the face of Gary's self-assured demeanor, all came rushing back.

With an equally confident tone, Ash retorted, "You remember your try at the Indigo Conference, right? Top 32? You didn't make it any further."

His words hit their mark, and a flash of irritation flickered across Gary's face. The reminder of his past failure was a sore point, one that Ash had kept in the back of his mind.

Gary shot back, "That was then, twerp. I've come a long way since then."

Ash's eyes blazed with a fiery determination, and he could feel his heart pounding. The desire to prove himself, to show Gary that he was no longer the inexperienced trainer he had been, was overwhelming.

With a mocking grin, he challenged Gary right back, "Well then, let's see if you can make it to the Top 4. I'll be waiting for that."

Turning away from the flabbergasted Gary, Ash marched on, his footsteps echoing with confidence. Cilan, who had been a silent observer of the exchange, followed Ash worriedly. The emotions from that chance encounter had fueled a burning determination within Ash. Revenge was on his mind now, and he was prepared to prove himself on the grand stage of the Vertress Conference.

As Ash and Cilan continued marching away from the heated encounter with Gary, they eventually reached Professor Oak, who was pleasantly surprised by their arrival. The cheerful atmosphere soon took an abrupt turn as Ash's rage bubbled to the surface.

"Why didn't you tell me, Professor?" Ash demanded, his voice edged with anger, making Professor Oak feel a pang of regret.

Staring at his mentor with intense frustration, Ash's emotions swirled. He couldn't believe that he was now facing his childhood rival, Gary, at the Vertress Conference, something he hadn't anticipated or been prepared for.

He continued to vent his anger, the Professor's attempt at an apology further fueling his frustration. Ash's shout resonated in the surroundings, an outpouring of his long-held emotions and sense of betrayal. He'd held a vision of his journey in Unova, but Gary's presence shattered that plan.

The Professor could only look down with a somber expression, realizing that he had overlooked this crucial detail.

Cilan, aware that Ash's match was imminent, approached cautiously, his voice trembling. "Ash, your battle with Cameron is starting soon. You don't want to lose your focus now."

That reminder was like a splash of cold water on Ash's fiery anger. With a huff of exasperation, he turned and stormed away, the storm of his emotions still raging within him. All he could think about now was the upcoming battle with Cameron, and the drive for victory that had been ignited by his encounter with his old rival, Gary.

The rivalry between Ash and Gary had reignited, and this time, Ash was determined to come out on top.

Before stepping out to the battlefield, he stopped and took a deep breath. He was still shaking from all the rage he was feeling. Ash's bond with Nephele, his Altaria, was a source of tremendous strength. As he released her from her Poke Ball, he knew that her soothing presence and ethereal song could calm his nerves and help him focus.

Nephele's gentle demeanor and the melodic tunes she produced served as a calming influence for Ash. Her singing was like a comforting lullaby, enveloping him in a sense of serenity. It provided him with the clarity and determination he needed to face the upcoming challenge.

Taking a deep breath, Ash closed his eyes for a moment, letting the sound of Nephele's song wash over him. He petted Nephele's soft, fluffy feathers, it was a tranquil moment, a brief respite from the tension and excitement that came with battles.

When he opened his eyes again, Ash felt a renewed sense of purpose. He knew he could rely on Nephele and his own skills as a trainer to overcome any challenge. With their hearts in harmony and their spirits aligned, they were ready to step onto the battlefield, where their combined strength would shine.

With one last deep breath, Ash returned his Altaria and got ready to step onto the battlefield. With Nephele by his side, Ash approached the battle with Cameron with confidence and determination, knowing that they could face any challenge together.

The battlefield crackled with excitement as Cameron and Ash prepared for their long-anticipated battle. The audience was buzzing with anticipation. Ash, with his unwavering determination, locked eyes with his new opponent, Cameron. They were about to clash, each with their unique strengths and strategies.

Cameron sent out his Watchog to face Ash's fearsome Kommo-o, Ares. Cameron shouted his commands with a spirited grin. "Watchog, use Thunderbolt!"

Ash, ever the tactical thinker, didn't miss a beat. "Ares, use Protect!"

The match began with a dazzling burst of electricity as Watchog's Thunderbolt was unleashed. However, Ares had his guard up and activated his Protect, erecting a shimmering barrier that absorbed the Thunderbolt harmlessly. The crowd cheered in amazement at the expert strategy displayed by both trainers.

Cameron, undeterred, knew that direct damage might not work. He shifted tactics swiftly. "Watchog, use Mean Look!"

The cunning move was well-timed. Watchog's eyes locked onto Ares, trapping the Dragon-type pokemon with an unrelenting gaze. Ash's chances of switching Ares out were now restricted.

Ash didn't falter; instead, he seized the opportunity for a counterstrike. "Ares, use Dragon Dance!" Ares responded with a graceful, swirling dance, his strength and agility increasing. The Mean Look might have held him in place, but it couldn't stifle his power. His scales shimmered as he prepared for the next move. "Now, use Close Combat!"

Ares sprang into action, he launched a flurry of precise and devastating Close Combat moves. He struck with a stunning display of strength and finesse, hitting Watchog hard and fast. It was a brilliant move, and it paid off as Watchog crumpled, unable to withstand the relentless assault.

The crowd erupted in cheers as Ash secured the first victory in this match. But the match was far from over. The battle between Ash and Cameron continued.

After a valiant effort by Watchog, Cameron had sent out his powerful Samurott, ready to make a splash in the arena. Ash, never one to back down from a challenge, recalled Ares and brought out his Nephertite.

Cameron's Samurott was an imposing sight, its horn gleaming with power. With a determined look, he called out his first command. "Samurott, use Hydro Cannon!"

Samurott responded with a torrent of high-pressure water that blasted towards Nephertite with remarkable force. The audience watched in awe as the devastating Hydro Cannon roared through the battlefield.

Ash had prepared for this moment, though. "Nephertite, use Rain Dance!"

Nephertite's voice resonated with power as he began to summon rainclouds above the arena. The drizzle began to fall, not only powering up Nephertite thanks to her ability Hydration but also aiding her slither away from Samurott's Hydro Cannon.

Cameron was momentarily caught off guard but quickly adapted. "Samurott, follow up with Aqua Jet!"

Samurott harnessed the boosted Aqua Jet, rocketing toward Nephertite at breakneck speed. It was a clever choice, given the rain-enhanced power of the move.

But Ash had a plan of his own. "Nephertite, use Draco Meteor!"

Nephertite unleashed a storm of energy-charged meteors, each crashing down with tremendous force. The clash of moves was monumental, as the Aqua Jet collided with the falling meteors. The result was a dazzling display of lights and water that left the audience in awe.

It was clear that the relentless training and trust between Ash and his pokemon were paying off. "Nephertite, follow up with a Water Pulse!"

Nephertite directed a surging Water Pulse toward the disoriented Samurott. It sent shockwaves through the battlefield, and the Water Pulse struck true, overwhelming Samurott's defenses.

Cameron was not one to give up easily. "Samurott, use Megahorn!"

With the last of his strength, Samurott charged forward, his horn aglow with a piercing light. The attack was swift, but Ash had one final move in store.

"Nephertite, use Dragon Pulse!"

Nephertite channeled a spiraling beam of Dragon energy and unleashed it just as Samurott's Megahorn drew near. The Dragon Pulse collided with the Megahorn in a tremendous explosion of power, illuminating the arena with a breathtaking display.

When the dust settled, it was evident that Ash and Nephertite had emerged victorious. The relentless rain combined with their strategic moves had proved to be the winning combination. Nephertite's mastery of Dragon Pulse had sealed the deal, and the crowd roared in applause.

"That is one tough pokemon you've got there, Cameron," Ash praised him, as his opponent recalled his starter. "Not many pokemon can withstand a Draco Meteor and Rainy Dance powered Water Pulse. Especially, from a pseudo-legendary pokemon."

"Thank you, Ash," Cameron beamed. "Let's see if this pokemon will work. Swanna, you are up my friend!" The majestic Swanna was a formidable opponent with a combination of flying and water-based moves. Cameron took a deep breath, clearly strategizing carefully for the next phase of the battle. "Swanna, let's show them what we're made of! Use Pluck!"

Swanna's wings glowed with power as she swooped down toward Nephertite, determined to catch her in her beak. However, Ash was ready with a counterstrategy.

"Nephertite, use Muddy Water!"

Nephertite summoned a torrent of muddy water that erupted from the ground, creating a protective vortex of thick, churning muck, as she twirled her body in circles. Swanna's dive was disrupted by the surprise attack, and she was struck by the muddy water, taking damage from the move.

The audience watched in anticipation, wondering what Cameron's next move would be.

Not one to back down, Cameron called out his next command. "Swanna, let's turn this around with Wing Attack!"

Swanna shook off the muddy water and, with renewed vigor, launched herself at Nephertite with her wings extended like blades. The powerful Wing Attack was aimed at dishing out some serious damage.

However, Ash and Nephertite weren't about to let up. "Nephertite, protect yourself with Protect!"

Nephertite enveloped herself in a shimmering, protective barrier, just in time to shield against Swanna's Wing Attack. The move was skillfully executed.

Cameron was feeling the pressure. "Swanna, use Bubble Beam!"

Swanna fired a rapid burst of sparkling bubbles towards Nephertite, each one exploding upon impact with a dazzling light.

Ash remained calm under the pressure. "Nephertite, let's finish this with Draco Meteor!"

Nephertite summoned the power of the cosmos, gathering energy for the awe-inspiring Draco Meteor. The battlefield was illuminated with falling meteorites, each one crackling with intense Dragon energy.

The Draco Meteor rained down upon Swanna, who was too distracted by her own Bubble Beam to evade the impending catastrophe. The mighty meteorites struck Swanna with tremendous force, it was simply too much.

With a final burst of energy, Swanna was knocked out, and the crowd erupted into applause. Ash and Nephertite's had defeated the third pokemon of Cameron and they still had a full team on their side.

However, the battle intensified as Cameron called back his fainted Swanna and summoned his next pokemon, a formidable Steel and Grass-type, Ferrothorn. On the other side of the field, Ash contemplated his next move. He decided to switch out Nephertite, who had fought valiantly in the previous rounds, and called out his trusty Charizard, Agni.

Cameron wasted no time, giving his orders with determination. "Ferrothorn, use Thunderbolt!"

Ferrothorn's body crackled with electric energy as he unleashed a powerful Thunderbolt attack aimed straight at Ash's Charizard. The super-effective move threatened to deal substantial damage to the Fire and Flying-type pokemon.

Ash remained calm and confident as he issued his counter-command. "Agni, show them your Fire Spin!"

Agni roared as he unleashed a fiery vortex, creating a spiraling column of flames that surrounded him. The Fire Spin move not only protected Agni from the oncoming Thunderbolt but also served as a counterattack. As Thunderbolt collided with the flames, the electric and fire energies clashed in a dazzling display of power. The crowd watched in awe as the two moves battled for supremacy.

Cameron quickly adapted to the situation. "Ferrothorn, use Mirror Shot!"

Ferrothorn responded by launching a bright, metallic orb from one of his thorny appendages. The Mirror Shot, a Steel-type move, was sent toward , surrounded by his own Fire Spin, maneuvered skillfully to evade the oncoming Mirror Shot while maintaining his protective flames.

Ash was ready to take control of the battle. "Agni, strike with Dragon Tail!"

Agni's powerful tail glowed with Dragon-type energy as he swung it toward Ferrothorn. The Dragon Tail move, backed by Charizard's strength, posed a significant threat to Ferrothorn. The blow landed, sending Ferrothorn hurtling across the battlefield. Despite his formidable defenses, the move took a toll on the spiked behemoth.

Cameron wasn't ready to back down. "Ferrothorn, retaliate with Pin Missile!"

Ferrothorn responded by launching a barrage of sharp, thorn-like projectiles from his armored body. The Pin Missile attack sought to strike back against Charizard. Agni deftly maneuvered in the air, using his superior agility to avoid the incoming Pin Missile projectiles. The fiery vortex of his Fire Spin still burned brightly.

Ash seized the moment to turn the tide of the battle. "Agni, finish this with Flamethrower!"

With a mighty roar, Charizard unleashed a searing stream of flames from his jaws. The intense Flamethrower engulfed Ferrothorn, dealing a decisive blow to the Grass and Steel-type pokemon.

The audience watched in anticipation as Ferrothorn's silhouette was enveloped in the fiery torrent. When the flames dissipated, it was evident that the super-effective Flamethrower had secured Ash's victory in this round.

Agni roared triumphantly, while Cameron recalled his fainted Ferrothorn. The crowd erupted into applause, appreciating the skill and strategy displayed in this thrilling battle. Ash was one step closer to his goal, and his trusted partners continued to showcase their incredible teamwork and power.

"Poor Cameron, Ash is not going easy on him," Cilan winced at how thoroughly his best friend was kicking Cameron's ass. "Luckily Cameron was not taking it hard, he was having fun and blushing under the constant praise Ash is showering him with after every defeat."

"That's Ashy to you," Delia smiled, before glaring at Professor Oak. "Unlike some other people."

Drayden clasped the shoulder of Professor Oak, as this one flinched under the glare of the matriarch Kethcum. "The Ketchum wrath is fiery, but their forgiveness is warm my friend. You will need just to earn it one day."

"That I will," Professor Oak sighed in regret.

With Cameron's Ferrothorn returned to his Poke Ball, he summoned his next formidable challenger, the three-headed dragon pokemon, Hydreigon.

"A Hydreigon? Nice!" Ash praised, making Cameron blush in delight. Across the battlefield, Ash contemplated his options, and his decision was clear. He called back Agni and selected his trusty shiny Altaria, Nephele, for this round of the battle. "You are up, my beautiful girl!"

The stage was set for a clash of power and strategy, with Hydreigon's menacing presence against Nephele's graceful yet potent form.

Cameron gave his orders confidently. "Hydreigon, let's start with Tri Attack!"

With his three heads glowing with elemental energy, Hydreigon unleashed a Tri Attack, sending a combination of Fire, Ice, and Electric beams soaring toward Nephele.

Ash maintained his composure, ready to meet the challenge. "Nephele, use Protect to shield yourself!"

Nephele responded swiftly, casting a protective barrier with Protect. The Tri Attack struck the barrier and protected the graceful Altaria.

Cameron wasn't discouraged. "Hydreigon, follow up with Dragon Pulse!"

Hydreigon's central head charged up and released a focused beam of Dragon-type energy, aiming to target Nephele directly. But Ash was not allowing his partner to be attacked so easily. "Nephele, let's take the skies! Use Dragon Dance!"

Nephele's wings began to shimmer with Dragon Dance's power, enhancing her speed and physical strength. As she ascended into the air, the Dragon Dance also heightened her confidence and determination.

Cameron wasn't about to back down. "Hydreigon, Double Hit!"

Hydreigon closed in on Nephele with remarkable speed, striking with his multiple heads. The Double Hit move aimed to land two quick physical attacks. Nephele, empowered by her Dragon Dance, displayed her newfound agility by gracefully evading the first hit. The second strike connected but nothing that would take her down from the skies.

Ash recognized the opportunity to turn the battle in his favor. "Nephele, strike back with Moonblast!"

Nephele's delicate yet determined nature shone through as she unleashed a radiant Moonblast attack. The sparkling beam of Fairy-type energy collided with Hydreigon, a Dragon and Dark-type pokemon, dealing significant damage.

Hydreigon was knocked back, feeling the full impact of the super-effective Moonblast. Despite his resilience, the Dragon and Dark-type pokemon was beginning to show signs of fatigue.

Cameron wasn't ready to give up yet. "Hydreigon, Dragon Rush!"

With a final burst of energy, Hydreigon surged forward, enveloped in Dragon Rush's power. The powerful physical attack was directed at Nephele, aiming to land a critical blow.

Ash acted quickly to secure victory. "Nephele, one more Moonblast!"

Nephele responded with unwavering resolve. Her radiant Moonblast struck true, connecting with Hydreigon before the Dragon Rush could reach its target. The super-effective Fairy-type move proved to be too much for the exhausted Hydreigon.

The crowd erupted into applause as Hydreigon was knocked out, leaving Nephele and Ash victorious in this round of the battle. They had just seen a pseudo-legendary be taken down by a fluffy dragon, they were going insane. But this will show them better than underestimate Nephele again.

As Cameron's Lucario leaped onto the battlefield, taking the place of his fallen teammate, Cameron's voice rang out with excitement, "Lucario, let's show 'em what you're made of! Start with Close Combat!"

Lucario surged forward with blinding speed. His aura flared with intense power as he launched a series of rapid punches and kicks in a Close Combat assault. The precision of this move was aimed at overwhelming Nephele with swift and relentless strikes.

Ash maintained his calm and strategized on the spot. "Nephele, create a Safeguard to protect yourself!"

Nephele responded by invoking a protective Safeguard barrier. It enveloped her in a shimmering aura, defending her against status-altering moves and conferring a sense of security.

Cameron wasn't deterred. "Lucario, follow with Dragon Pulse!"

Lucario gathered Dragon-type energy within himself, forming an orb of power. With remarkable precision, he fired the Dragon Pulse towards Nephele.

Ash knew it was time to take action. "Nephele, disrupt that Dragon Pulse with Dragon Claw!"

With finesse and determination, Nephele's claws gleamed with Dragon Claw's power. She slashed through the oncoming Dragon Pulse, dispersing the energy sphere and preventing it from reaching her.

Cameron remained resolute. "Lucario, use Aura Sphere!"

Lucario channeled its aura to create a formidable Aura Sphere. The sphere crackled with energy as he launched towards Nephele, representing a considerable threat due to his precision and sheer power.

Ash formulated a plan to turn the tide of the battle. "Nephele, ascend to the skies! Use Sky Attack!"

Nephele, with her newfound strength and grace, soared into the air, radiating power. Her body became enveloped in a glowing aura as she charged her Sky Attack. This strategy not only increased her offensive capability but also allowed her to dodge the Aura Sphere attack from below.

Cameron observed the situation with anticipation. "Lucario, follow it up with Extreme Speed!"

Lucario moved with incredible swiftness, attempting to close the gap created by Nephele's ascent. Extreme Speed was a move known for its lightning-fast approach.

Ash seized the opportunity to execute his strategy. "Nephele, unleash your Sky Attack now!"

Nephele's Sky Attack reached its pinnacle as she descended from the skies, cloaked in an aura of power. The Sky Attack collided with Lucario's Extreme Speed, creating a spectacular clash of forces.

The audience watched in awe as the two pokemon battled in mid-air, their moves locked in a fierce collision of power and will. The sheer intensity of the impact sent shockwaves throughout the battlefield.

Finally, with a resounding burst of energy, Nephele's Sky Attack proved to be the stronger move, and it struck true against Lucario. The direct hit was too much for the Aura Pokemon to withstand.

Lucario was knocked out, and Cameron recalled him to his Poke Ball. The crowd erupted into cheers, impressed by the remarkable clash that had unfolded.

This hard-fought victory for Ash and Nephele signaled a step closer to their goal in the Vertress Conference. Their bond and battle prowess had earned them the admiration of fans and the respect of their fellow trainers.

"You were wonderful, Cameron," Ash shook hands with the young trainer. "I would love to battle you again, another day."

"Me too! We had so much fun!" Cameron beamed, before exiting the stadium and leaving Ash under the cheers of the crowd.

The Top 4 is next.

Gary Oak is next.

And Ash Ketchum will conquer them!
