Hope Always Overcomes Fear

The Justice League always was ready for whatever threat would come to Earth. As soon as the alert came in, they'd be on their way to deal with it.

Sometimes, the threat came for the Watchtower.

Today was no exception.

Hawkgirl roared as she swung her mace, but she was knocked down by the strange being that had broken into the Watchtower. Green Arrow tried using his arrows, but to his shock, the arrows were deflected back to him, one of them being a knockout arrow and he coughed before falling down.

Right before he did, the strange being spat something out that attached itself to Green Arrow's head and suddenly, the hero was on his feet and grabbing his bow, arming it and pointing at the others. "Guys! Look out!" He warned as he fired his arrows.

"Arrow! What are you doing?!" Superman asked.

"I'm...I'm not doing it, guys! Something's controlling me!"

Atom, who had shrunk down to examine the item on Green Arrow's head, quickly unshrunk. "It's a mind-controlling device!" He said to the others before he suddenly got hit with one.

"Atom!" Hawkgirl cried out as she got up and tried to attack again, but the strange being spat out the strange object at her and she froze, unable to attack.

"Foolish mortals! You can't defeat me!" The person laughed cruelly, his fangs glinting in the light.

"Green Lantern, call for backup! I'll hold him off!" Superman said.

"You got it!" Hal said, running for the communications, but before he could reach them, Hawkgirl was in front of him and she held up her mace.

"Look out!" She warned as she was made to swing her mace at him. "I can't stop his control!"

Hal turned to deal with the threat. "Alright, vampire, that's it," he said, about to use his ring when Superman, who had unfortunately been hit by one of the strange objects, knocked him down and Hal was soon under the strange vampire's control.

"I believe a retreat would be best," Dr. Fate said to Spectre and J'onn, opening a portal to Earth.

"I agree," the Martian Manhunter said.

"Hurry," Spectre said as they entered the portal and it vanished.

The vampire growled as he saw them leave, but then smiled. "No matter," he said. "I'll soon enslave them."

He laughed evilly, ready to begin the next phase of his plan.

The three heroes made it to Earth and landed in Coast City. "We either need to find shelter or find some of the others," J'onn said.

"I think finding some of the others might be wise," Fate said in agreement.

"Sticking together for now would be best too," Spectre said solemnly.

What they didn't realize at the moment was there was one hero, or rather heroine, that was near them.
From a distance was a certain Blue Lantern heroine flying by who noticed the three heroes.

"Well, this is quite the team here," Hope called out, coming down. "Martian Manhunter, Spectre, and Dr. Fate. What are you doing in Coast City?"

"Looking for some hope," the ghost replied, smiling. "And we've found it."

Lea at first thought he was making a clever joke, but then saw how serious the other two were. "What happened?" She asked.

"A very powerful being entered the Watchtower and caught us unawares," J'onn said, his face deadly serious.

"He's used something to capture Hawkgirl, Flash, Atom, Green Arrow, Superman, and Green Lantern," Dr. Fate said. "Whatever he is using, they cannot move unless he speaks."

Hope didn't like the sound of that. "What kind of powerful being? Any creature or villain you guys faced before?"

"No," Spectre said, now looking serious. "We believe he is a vampire, but his power is quite strong, stronger than any vampire I've seen here on Earth."

"It could be possible that he's an alien vampire," J'onn said. "Given his strength and aura."

"I agree with J'onn," Dr. Fate said with a nod. "In all my travels in my realm, I've never met a being with such a powerful aura."

On one hand, Hope thought that her theory of alien vampires being real is cool. On the other hand, there's an evil alien vampire on the loose causing trouble with dangerous mind controlling powers. It was conflicting for the Blue Lantern.

"...All right. I'll help you guys," Hope replied, trying to keep calm and brave. "At least, tell me you called Batman for backup. He's got to at least have tons of experience with both aliens and vampires."

"True, he does," Dr. Fate said with a nod.

"I'll call him," J'onn said. "Hopefully he is nearby."

Sighing in relief, Hope walked away from the group for a moment to keep her cool.

'I can do this...I can handle fighting an alien vampire,' she thought to herself, taking a few deep breaths. 'The heroes need me and I can't bail on them now.'

She didn't see Spectre had followed her. "Hope, are you all right?" He asked.

Hope nearly jumped and screamed in startlement. "Spectre! Don't sneak up on me like that! I already have one friend who does it."

"Sorry, young one," he apologized, having not meant to scare her. "But are you sure you're up to the task?"

"Yes, Spectre. I'm fine," Hope assured, walking back to the others. "Let's just go save the heroes already."

"My home base is ready for us in case we need to retreat again," Dr. Fate said. "Stay together, no matter what."

As the golden-masked doctor opened a portal to the Watchtower, Lea tried to calm herself down more, her fear of hypnosis very prevalent in her mind, so much so that she didn't realize that a fellow Lantern felt Midnight's fear and was quick to hitch a ride invisibly while keeping their distance, ready to be the element of surprise if need be.

They soon arrived and began carefully moving. "Be careful of the others," J'onn said. "Though our friends are not acting of their own free will, whatever that monster used on them could hit us at any time."

Spectre noticed something. "The Watchtower is on lockdown," he said, seeing how dark it was. "Watch your step."

Hope kept breathing steadily while exploring the dark areas of the locked down Watchtower. She had to keep herself conscious on the mission of stopping this alien vampire.

Transyl smirked as he watched the four enter. "Hmm, a new heroine perhaps?" He asked himself before seeing her energy was actually very high and he smiled. "Ah, she'll be perfect to be one of my minions. Once everything is ready, we'll lure in that foolish ghost girl."

His eyes flashed before he went on the hunt.

As the four were looking around, none of them had yet noticed their shadow, but Fate felt something grab him and he was gone in a moment. Spectre turned and suddenly vanished himself.

J'onn noticed this and stood up, seeing something and was about to warn Hope, but something hit his forehead and he vanished too, leaving only Midnight Hope, who noticed she was suddenly alone.

"Spectre? J'onn? Dr. Fate?" She called out quietly, starting to freak out more on the inside.

"Looking for them, little one?" Asked a voice from behind her with a cruel chuckle.

Slowly turning around, Hope's eyes widened in horror where she felt like screaming...but nothing came out.

That was, until the vampire hissed at her.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

She turned and began to fly away, but the being grabbed her almost at once. "Gotcha!" He said, not letting her go.

Hope was pinned by the evil vampire where she couldn't construct anything, due to her fears getting the better of her. "You're mine, girl," she heard him say.

"No...Leave me alone...Please..." Hope managed to say, breathing heavily with her heart escalating.

He grinned at her, smelling her fear. "Ah, you're perfect for my meal," he said.

But just before Lord Transyl could leave his victim in a trance with his hypnotic eyes, Hope gasped sharply and fainted on the spot.

Uh-oh! Is Transyl going to succeed? Read on! :)
