James isn't sure what he did wrong.
The answer is obviously something, because ever since he's come home, Lily has been slightly cold to him. Not ignoring him, exactly, but he can tell that something's pissed her off. He can tell in the way that she didn't greet him with a kiss on the cheek like she usually does, he can tell in the way that she rolled her eyes when he offered her help cooking dinner, he can tell in the way that she keeps sending little glares his way.
He loves his wife, he really does. With everything he has in him. But sometimes, like these types of times, James gets a little bit annoyed.
He doesn't doubt that he's done something. He's always doing something. He'd like to think he's matured since his younger days, but he still has a tendency to get too into jokes, sometimes, especially when Sirius is around. But he hasn't even done anything lately. He hasn't even seen Sirius in two weeks!
Lily is upset about something. He doesn't need to be very bright to see that.
If only James could figure out what.
"Are you okay?" he asks, tentatively, as Lily stabs a potato with her fork.
"Lovely," she says, her voice low, almost like a growl. She doesn't sound okay. James gets the feel she wants to stab something other than just her potato.
"Did I do something wrong?" he asks, next, because if could just know, then he could fix it.
"No, nothing," she says, her tone lighter, with a sigh at the end.
So he definitely did something wrong.
"Okay?" he says, staring at Lily, as if her hair will give him an answer.
He has no idea.
While he has no idea, though, he might as well try to be the perfect husband, to try and not upset her further. James clears her plate for her and washes the dishes, and he turns to throw out the paper towel he used to wipe down the table when it hit him.
The trash.
It's full.
James remembers now, remembers Lily asking him to bring it out on his way out of the house. James was going to, he was, but he got caught up in getting ready, and he forgot, and…
It's still full.
That's what Lily is upset about, what's she's been holding against him.
Well, James is going to take it out right away.
Just after he puts away the dishes. He won't forget.
