Lok leaned against the wall, idly thumbing his Starter's Pokeball as he started zoning out, letting his thoughts drift. He knew his match wasn't for another half hour, so unless he somehow became dead to the world, he would be fine.
Being reborn in the Pokemon world had thrown the blonde for a loop, as it should to anyone who had gone through the experience. It had been a massive surprise, but one he had taken too like a Sharpedo to a school of literally any non poisonous water type. Pokemon had been a major staple of his childhood, one he'd kept up with even in his adult years, so he wanted to grow up as soon as he could and head on out for his own journey.
But it was after he'd grown a bit, had been able to comprehend his surroundings and understand the language, that he'd figured out that the world was more... Realistic, then the show had portrayed.
As was the norm for reincarnations he'd been born to a named character's family.
To be specific his father was Lt. Surge, future electric type gym leader of the Kanto region.
Because of this Lok Surge, his new name in this life, learned about things that he'd never known about. Things that wouldn't be included in a children's cartoon like Pokemon.
To everyone else who watched the show, and played the games, the Kanto vs Johto war was nice little filler information for the world, just like all the others were...
But to Lok and his family?
To his Dad who served in it and came back with scars, both mental and physical? Lost members of his team, both human and Pokemon?
It had been something all too real... And came with consequences that first told Lok that this world was real, and should be treated as such.
The Kanto vs Johto war had lasted for 3 years, which some may call short, but was in reality far too long when it came to a world with creatures as powerful as Pokemon. The death toll had hit 4.7 million Kantonians, and nearly triple that for Pokemon. Hell, it got so bad that fucking Ho-Oh showed up and basically scared everyone to stop killing each other. Sure, there were upwards of a million Pokemon on both sides, but Ho-Oh was Ho-Oh, a veritable force of nature and a literal phoenix, there was no putting it down without the entire battlefield becoming an, at best, desert.
When Lok learned those facts he began to really see the world as it was, and not what he wanted it to be.
It was probably also the reason Giovanni had wanted his own Legendary, but he couldn't know for sure.
That point was further nailed in when he learned that certain regions, Unova/Kalos/Sinnoh/Alola/Paldea/Galar had put a travel ban on people from Indigo, which he could sort of understand. Even now, 10 years after the fact, the bans were only loosening instead of being outright rescinded. The region closest to rescinding the bans was Alola, but that wasn't that much of a surprise as one would think.
Out of all the regions, Alola was the one with the most active Legends. Oh sure the Beasts and Genies were out and about doing their own things, and no one wanted to get on the bad side of any kind of Legend, but that was especially true for Fairy Legends.
Because of said bans his options for team members was a little restricted... Not as much as he had expected, Pokemon migrated, Ei did, some just deciding to go somewhere just because they could, which was what Vision did, and some were kind of just there, like his bud Ryuji, who he'd found chilling on Dewford beach in Hoenn, so he still got some mons from the other regions. Hell, his starter wasn't even from Kanto, but that was because he and his family had gone on a vacation to the aforementioned Hoenn region after his Dad came back.
Surge didn't want to be in Kanto for a bit after the war, so we'd gone to stay with some family on my mom's side of the family.
Which was not Watson, but instead Brawly... Who was my cousin. He was a cool cousin, and they'd bonded over surfing and working out, something he knew his girlfriend was highly appreciative of.
Still, Dad had found himself an adult martial artist woman, Madelyn Macer, and Lok respected the hell out of him for that... While also thanking Arceus for the free comedy their relationship provided him with.
He would never not be entertained watching his parents throw down and move on like nothing happened.
Being with a woman that could and would beat your ass seemed to be something that just called to the Surge men. Arceus knows Lok wouldn't ever forget the way Flannery nearly set his ass alight with a glare when he'd made a throwaway comment about Winnona's thighs. The redhead was ready to throw hands with his cousin when Brawly, poor dense Brawly, had said Flannery could use some work with her own legs.
Granted, she later admitted that yeah, the flying type gym leader had some thick thighs, but it was about the moral of the thing.
All that aside, when it came to what type of trainer he wanted to be, he'd settled on following in his Dad's footsteps and be an Electric Type Specialist. It helped that his starter was a shiny Elektrike who'd come to him during his time in Hoenn, one he'd named Raiden after the Metal Gear character, so his path was already set. It was cemented when his Dad was given the Vermilion city gym, as he knew he would be, and they'd trained together.
That had really done the start of his journey good considering he'd nearly had an entire team before he'd gone out. The only one he'd actually had to go out of his way to find was Nora, though that wasn't as much of an issue as he'd expected considering she initially wanted to mooch off of him. Something something tasty aura, something something residual discharge.
Learning that Electric Types could feed each other with the electricity they produced was interesting, but made sense really. Electric Types needed a steady supply of electricity to stay healthy and produce consistent levels of their own electricity, which they shouldn't be able to get out in the wilds unless they could feed each other like that, so it again, just made sense.
He'd also trained with his mother, whose Lucario had told him how to manage his Aura so he didn't electrocute himself in the shower/bath again, so he was looking good on all fronts.
That all led to where he was now, standing in his assigned room for the Kanto League Semi-Finals. His life had its ups and downs, a few scars and marks from his misadventures in the world, but as it was he had a great life.
Which was really cliche now that he was thinking about it all.
He wouldn't change anything about his life, he just internalized that he was living the near ideal for an Isekai.
"5 minutes remaining. Repeat, there are 5 minutes remaining until the battle."
That announcement snapped Lok out of his thoughts, the blonde straightening up as he cracked his back and neck. He had a match to get ready for, and a family to do proud.
He was the next Surge, and he'd make sure to bring the thunder.
