Ch 4

The next day after Zod's speech, Clark flew over to Metropolis' military base to surrender himself.

When he got there, the soldiers warily aimed their machine guns at him but they let him speak.

"I would like to speak to Lois Lane."

"What makes you think she's here?" General Swanwick asked in a gruff voice.

"Don't play games with me, general. I'll surrender, but only if you guarantee Lois's freedom." Clark replied, just as stern.

After he was handcuffed and let in, he saw that Lois had also been handcuffed.

"Why are you surrendering to Zod?" Lois asked in confusion. She had seen what powers he had. Why didn't he use them?

"I'm surrendering to mankind." Clark replied. "There's a difference."

Lois nodded, then gave the S symbol a curious glance.

"What's the S stand for?"

"It's not an S."

"On my world, it means hope."

But on Earth, the S was still an S.

Maybe it needed a new meaning.

Then Clark stood up and flexed his arms, breaking through the handcuffs in one second, then also freed Lois in clanging sprays of metal debris.

Only when Clark stopped did he notice the soldiers and General outside.

"Let's put our cards on the table here, general. You're scared because you can't control me. You don't, and you never will. But that doesn't mean I'm your enemy.

"Then who is'?" the General asked.

"Zod." Clark replied.

"That's what I'm worried about." the General said with a grim tone.

"Be that as it may, I've been given orders to hand you over to him."

Clark nodded.

The General was only doing this for the survival of his people.

"Do what you have to do, general. Thank you."

"For what?"

"For believing in me."

The General's face was confused for a second, then he nodded. "Didn't make much difference in the end."

It did to me."
