Chapter One:

The Painting In The Cave

Monkeys hooted and swung from vine to vine, shaking the leaves in the tree tops, squirrels chittered and scurried, and birds flew across the blue yonder above the island while smoke rose from the volcano overlooking the land known as Kong Island. Nature was in balance as it was meant to be, with nothing that could disrupt the natural order, even if anything could.

He walked through the woods, clutching his cane, and moved at a slow pace that fit his age. Nobody dared to laugh at him for being old, unless they wished to anger him, leading to a change in his name.

Cranky Kong wasn't as capable of moving fast or appearing strong as he used to be, those days were well behind him, but an old monkey needed his exercises.

A little walk didn't hurt his old bones, as long as the walk wasn't too long. Cranky's beard rolled down his chin until it was inches away from touching the ground, well-combed and perfectly clean, free from dirt troubles in the slightest.

The elder Kong looked upward at the trees, watching a few monkeys climb the branches and the vines. And, for a moment, he thought of trying to climb up those trees, for old time's sake. But then, the thought was gone and he stood there, a tired old monkey with less muscle in his limbs.

Maybe that was a little harsh, maybe a tad rude, we don't know how much muscle Cranky Kong has left at this point in his life. But since he can still walk, move his arms, he has plenty left. Otherwise, this would be a boring scene, wouldn't it?

"Ah, what a lazy day on the island." Cranky muttered, "Birds singing, animals feasting, the volcano smoking. Thankfully, that K. Rool jerk's refrained from launching an attack. Maybe I should go into one of the caves and find something, especially since it seems like DK hasn't gone in there yet, in all the time he's spent enjoying his banana horde. Heh-heh-heh."

Cranky turned slowly and walked towards the mouth of a cave that lay in the side of a large hill near the woods, the cave seemed to lead underground, perhaps to a secret unexplored mining area. He and his family had explored nearly every nook and cranny on Kong Island, but perhaps there was a secret that had yet to be explored.

The retired old Kong carefully stepped around a rock sitting in his way. Had he lost his eyesight upon hitting old age, Cranky would have tripped. Whenever he walked, he always made sure there were no trip hazards that he could've easily stepped on.

He walked into the cave, hearing the sound of his cane tapping on the ground echo through the dim and mysterious cavern. A couple bats flew by, their shadows sweeping over Cranky Kong.

Cranky brought out a candle and lit it, the flame casting a warm light that reflected on the walls. He walked onward, moving deeper into the cave of mystery and looking around for hidden secrets.

Water dripped in the distance and another bat fluttered. Cranky slowed the pace of his walk, taking his time to listen to the sounds, as he looked all around himself. And then, his gaze settled on something and he shone the light of his candle upon the dirt-covered stone wall.

Right there, he saw it, a mural, some type of ancient drawing. And that, that spiked thing depicted in it, with the yellow skin, it looked like that Bowser fellow. Cranky moved closer to inspect and noticed more to the apparent mural, seeing a blue orb of sorts and it wasn't even near the image of Bowser, who was taller than he'd been in the images that Cranky had seen.

The orb was near another being, one with dark bumpy skin, jagged spikes on it's back, a large build, eerie eyes, massive feet and a large tail that could potentially rival a city tower in terms of height.

"Goodness." Cranky remarked, stepping forward to take a closer look.

If what he was seeing was to be believed, this mural was depicting a battle between Bowser and a massive beast, a battle that hadn't even happened in recorded history. It had to be influenced by a vision of the future, someone had a dream about a scenario like this and etched the carving into the cave wall here.

And that creature opposing Bowser, Cranky was familiar with many ancient legends, tales from the past or even another world. And looking at that thing, the old Kong was reminded of an ancient tale in particular, a tale of a great god of destruction, a god incarnate, that had destroyed a city long ago.

Many long decades had passed since that foreboding night, before Cranky's time, and it had been years since the creature was long thought destroyed.

But, as recent legend had it; the creature was alive and would soon arise from the depths.

It had to be alive, in order to battle the creature resembling Bowser. It was a beast from another world, a beast capable of destroying everything, and its name was "Gojira."

"We knew the world would not be the same, a few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent..."
