(Lucy's POV):
Two years today, marks the day Lisanna returned from Edolas. When we first met her, we was all very confused by the situation - Edolas Lisanna was gone. No amount of magic could bring her back, and it was a hard truth for Edolas Mirajane and Elfman to accept. However, they knew deep down, the day would come where Earthland Lisanna would have to go home. I imagine the reality of the situation was simply too... otherworldly, to understand; to process. They spent years grieving, and magically had a new Lisanna, allowing those years of grief to fade with time. I know I would react the same way if Mama reappeared on my doorstep.
No amount of time passing, or making new memories with their 'new' Lisanna, could hide the fact Mirajane knew the reality of the situation all along. When you are hurting, you do things that you never thought you would. To keep herself from collapsing, it became the best solution. To protect Elfman's heart, Lisanna coming back to them, was a concept Mirajane did not understand, but allowed, played along with, and then never spoke of again. Any big sister would do the same.
I cannot imagine the difficulties of such a situation, but I know how it feels to lose someone. Everyone at Fairy Tail, has lost at least something or someone in their young age. Its what made us become even closer as a family!
Because for a majority of the Guild, they were each others first real, solid Family.
Then I joined, and it became an even bigger family! I knew I would get along with everyone as soon as I met them - hard to hate the people who go to war for you, the ones who fight for your lives. Some of my closest friends being Levy; Yukino; Cana; Juvia; Wendy; Erza... to start with, Levy and I had the most in common! The reading, the men, the delusional expectations of men (we all a bit delulu from time to time!), even our personalities had close similarities. Ugh, Levy, honestly.. my rock. One friendship that blossomed suddenly was with Lisanna, and I discovered through our interactions and times hanging out, she was a sweetheart - just like the rest of her family.
The trauma the Strauss family suffered, was nothing but painful to know. Mirajane's past, their parents death, Elfman struggling to come to terms with his magic capabilities... the shunning from the village. They had each other, and thats it. No one else to protect them; and it spoke a lot about their bonds, as adults. Lisanna may have been a little bit of a devil like her sister- Actually... she was perhaps WORSE than Mirajane because she could hide it so well- which made me shiver sometimes. I didn't want to have two matchmakers on my back at all times. You have the wrong girl for that, lovelies.
Today, was one of them days. A slow day, if you will. Gray was by the bar, Cana checking her cards, Juvia lurking in the shadows... Gajeel and Levy were off being absolute butterflies around each other. It was calm, for once, and that said a lot! Natsu was off yapping to Happy, and everyone else simply enjoyed the peace and quiet.
And you know what?
... I was going insane from boredom! Sometimes, I want chaos! Sometimes, the peace drives me up the damn wall from how silent it is! And I need to speak my truth!
"Ugh!" I flopped on to the table, laying my head in my hands. I overheard Erza humming, and lifted my eyes to see her staring at me, barely concerned. Thanks, Erza. "I'm soooo bored, like! Nothing is going on! Strangely.. for once, I'm not broke, scraping by to survive the month, living off of dust and air for breakfast and dinner, so I don't need a job... Erza, what am I meant to do?!"
Erza glanced at me one last time, then went back to her book. "That's beyond me, Lucy... I, for one, enjoy the peace. Why don't you have a.. hmm, what do they call it... ah, a 'me' day?"
Sitting up slightly, I perked up out of interest. 'me' day sounded great! I mean, I love treating myself - any excuse to celebrate, right?! So, I leaned forward. "You know what? You're so right! I should, I mean, when was the last time I.. I did my makeup, cut my hair, had a little date with myself... ahh~ it sounds perfect! Thanks, Erza! You saved me from killing myself from the boredom." I watched as she hid her amused smile at my dramatics, and it made me smile too.
"Heyy! Lucy, lovely, I have a message for you here." Mirajane called me over, waving from the bar. I stopped in my tracks, heading towards the door, but quickly swerved and made a right, walking over. As I approached, Gray stopped drinking.
He had been slightly off these days, but still his usual self. I spoke to Lisanna about it, and we both agreed something must be going on. Juvia wasn't acting as, um, spirited as she is, too. Whatever happened, was between them, but I knew they knew we were on to it and we cared. Gray casually slung his arm around my side in a friendly hug, and I held his head, used to the random bouts of affection by now. The one time I decided to be adventurous and try one of Loke's interesting 'magic pills', it resulted in Gray spouting the craziest fucking conspiracy nonsense known to man, Loke breaking his arms - YES, ARMS - and Virgo stripping, curling up into a ball, then pissing herself like a crazy person. Ever since then, we were real close. It was like a bonding session. It was even funnier that Natsu and I had to carry Gray to bed; his 'rival' didn't even know the full story, but sucked it up and helped Gray out. This is my dark secret (lowkey), and we never told anyone. Other than Gajeel, since he joined us the next few times...
Anyway!
I let go of Gray, and followed Mirajane's outstretched hands, to see a large parcel in her arms. "Oh! I don't remember ordering anything. Is this for me?"
"Yes, from Yukino. In the note, it says she discovered this on a mission in the east, and wanted you to receive it as a gift. I suppose she is busy helping Sting and his little one, I doubt she would have the time to fully dedicate time into studying this... hmmm." Mirajane explained to me, and I was immediately hooked. I forgot that Sting popped up with a baby, and when we thought Yukino was the mother, it turned out that he had a baby mother (Gajeel and I like to make jokes about that) no one knew of. "How about you open it now, give this lazy Mr. something to look at?"
Gray rolled his eyes, pushing his mug out of the way. "Hey, no one is lazy here. I'm just chillin'. Don't I always?"
"No, you fucking strip like a lunatic and scream like you're on drugs. Nobody in the world would describe you as chill." Cana cynically said, and I covered my mouth, hiding my laugh. Gray looked like he wanted to lunge at her, but sucked it up and simply hummed.
"Okay, see, if I wanted to smell your hot alcohol breath, I would ask. Given that I didn't, shit, I mean, why don't you go bother Macao like you always do? Huh?" He retorted, sassily. A few 'ooo's resounded in the background, including my own, because sometimes I lived for the drama! And Gray got her good. Instead of letting it continue, Mirajane loudly cleared her throat and glared around.
I took the box from her, opening it carefully. Inside the parcel contained a large, thick book, and a few random trinket bags. Inside of the little bags: a few bits and pieces of jewelry, necklaces, charms, and some pretty star shaped bracelets. I assumed they were gifts from their travelling, and pushed them to the side for now.
The book was interesting. The leather was old, weathered, but expensive... it felt as if history was stitched into the embroidered border of the front cover. It wasn't too flashy: a dark brown, with intricate lines etched in, and no lock in sight. However... there was a sense of mystery, and it was drawing something out of me. A reaction, but a magical one. My celestial magic pulsed, and I could feel the hairs on my arms stand up as I ran my hands over the ridges of the book. Perhaps it was a tome? I'd have to consult Freed or Levy, given their expertise, but... it was as if it was calling out to me, my power, and my core, as a celestial. Mother often preached the responsibility of the Heartfilia clan, and I never truly understood what she meant - the emphasis she placed on the succession of the power, the practice, always had an undertone that... I would only understand as an educated woman.
I carefully opened the book, using one hand to grab Gray's arm. "Why am I so nervous right now?" I whispered, and felt my eyes widen as the pages fluttered. "Woah... 'To you, the Celestial'... this seems crazy!"
"What's this, Lucy?" Levy chirped, bouncing over. I felt her peer over my shoulder, and heard her gasp excitedly. "Ooh, I've seen this before! The ancient text of the east, real far east at that. I haven't studied this too much.. wait, where did you get this from?"
"Yukino sent it to me, she found it in.. umm.. Jinling capital." I replied, reading the sticky notes that were left across the pages in the book. "Hey, d'you think this is enchanted somehow? It called out to my magic, I felt it. It was odd. Not scary, but... I don't think I've sensed that type of energy before."
Levy paused, smiling at me. I tilted my head, curious at her lack of response. "An old, ancient text, calling out to you. Not to mention, the title. I imagine it is a celestial book, perhaps with celestial magic enchantment in it. Maybe call Loke, see if he knows what it is?"
"You called, angel?"
Appearing next to the bar, Loke grinned as he looked at me. I rolled my eyes at his never-ending attempts at flirt with people, but Cana seemed to cuddle up to him very easily. Their relationship, if you could even call it that, was so amusing as it was intriguing. Half of the time I was convinced he paid her to beat him up, and I knew they were hooking up with each other, then other times she was close to annihilating him! I couldn't understand it...
I supported it, anyway.
Loke walked over, also joining my side and leaning over. He jolted in surprise, and genuinely took a step back. "Holy... Lucy, where in the name of god did you find this?!"
I was startled by his reaction, also stepping back. I awkwardly laughed, closing the book. "Um, I didn't. Yukino sent it to me on a whim, literally saying in the note, she didn't have time to investigate but felt her magic resonate with it."
He looked around, and there was a conflicted glint in his eyes. I watched as he tensed up, then attempted to hide it with a smile. "Lucy, lucy... how about we go somewhere quiet, yeah? This isn't a light topic. I need you to hear what I have to say, right now."
"Oh.. okay, sure. We can use the back room." I replied, gesturing towards the room behind the bar. It was used as a storage room sometimes, but it'd do.
The crowd slowly begun to disperse, once Loke and I left, but it was scary. Just what about the book, could draw out such a reaction, from Loke? The Leader of the Zodiac, at that!
Lucy sat down in the back, the book placed on a little table - and Loke sat opposite her, resting his chin against his hands. He was very serious: his aura was rigid, his eyes were sharp, and he was definitely back in Leader mode.
"For you to understand the book, I need to go back quite a few hundred years. I'll start with the person that comes to mind, someone you need to keep in mind. Context wise... in the Celestial World, there is always a board of elders who record our history. These are elders who were created from star matter, or the matter of the universe, simply to record history and observe every living being. From what I understand, they are neither human nor otherworldly being, simply a piece of the universe and take on whatever form they see fit. For example, elder Lanthafi, who took on the form of a three meter scroll. One of the strongest, most revered members of this board, was a lady named Tarynstell. The woman that she was, oh gods... ah, nevermind, before I get lost in thoughts!" Loke begun to explain, momentarily making a very off-putting face that Lucy gagged at. He shook his head, focusing once more. "Taryn.. stell, represented the west. She recorded the celestial history, of the west! Each member of the board, the four, represented North; South; East; West. Tarynstell was special because she recorded history in writing, and infused the memories of what she observed, into a priceless pearl. The divine pearl, as we call it. Whilst none of us truly understand when the elders were created, we do know that two passed. Kawasigaran of the South, and... Taryn herself. Kawasigaran died after venturing to the west, and Taryn passed away shortly after. Like I said, none of us truly understand what happened, but her visit to what would've been.. even further than Caelum, ended as soon as it started. The best person to ask would be Horologium or, Grandpa Crux... but still, its a sensitive topic. You thought Karen had everyone on your knees- Taryn was the original, the trendsetter, the doer! Arkils, the wolf, he was WHIPPED. Seriously."
All of this information, understandably, blew Lucy away. She listened intently, but so much emotion was drawn inside of her, she strangely felt like crying. "Tarynstell... wow. That's.. well, I can tell what impact she had. When you say she essentially was the caretaker of the West, is that us?"
"Yeah, which is why there are a few altars that treat her as the Goddess of the West. She went beyond recording history, she built land, she blessed land, people, and pleaded the stars to guide the people in her absence. It was if humanity, to her, was.. her family... given her status as not human but not "other creature", her idea of family was essentially up to her own interpretation." Loke finished, nodding heavily. "The book you're holding is actually a creation of her and the elusive, Goddess of the East. They were really close, best friends even. This book is two combined master's intelligence! Lucy, you've been given a relic, a treasure of time. Aquarius speculated its existence; it was a rumour they made this book. You should study it, try and get through what you can. Then again, this is a mixture of old Fiorian and ancient Yunian... might take you a while to get it."
Lucy shook her head, picking up the book. "No, I can read it - most of it. Mama spoke to me in both old Fiorian and Yunian. I mean, I don't remember everything... ah! Wait, what's that newbies name? Yongliang? Maybe I can ask him for his help! The last time we spoke, he mentioned he's quite well read and he's fluent in several languages, including Minstrel's language." Loke raised his eyebrows, curiosity piqued at the mention of a newbie.
"Yongliang, huh? Yeah, that's a pretty common name in the north east of Da Xia... okay. I need to get a read on this new man, what's he like? Do people like him?" Loke asked, leaning forward.
Lucy laughed and held the book close to her chest, smiling brightly. "Aw, yeah! He's super nice. One thing, he's like Gray's double... except slightly taller, has a mullet, and the tattoos... overall, everyone likes him. He's actually a Water Dragon slayer, which obviously Natsu fell head over heels for. We say he's smooching Liang' everytime they're not in the room with us."
"I just know when you say 'we', you mean you and Gajeel. Speaking of, is he joining us next weekend?"
Eventually, Loke's voice tuned out. Lucy felt a strange feeling come over her; she could feel her body sinking into the chair, relaxing, or lulled into some type of sleep... she wasn't sure. What she did know, was that Loke was no longer in the room, and her eyes closed.
When they re-opened, she was seated in the middle of the ocean; and a gorgeous, starry sky, rippling above her, glistening with stars, planets, and secrets.
