Alphabet Soup - Patience

Jane knew that there was one characteristic that she did not possess, and that was patience. She had been told many times by various people to 'chill', 'take a chill pill' and that 'patience was a virtue.' She couldn't 'chill' or 'take a chill pill', it wasn't in her DNA, she couldn't do that. She couldn't sit around and wait either, when she had a thought, she needed to follow up on it, and she needed to act on it right then.

There was one person that seemed to calm her down and that was her best friend, Dr. Maura Isles. Maura knew from the first time that she had met Jane, that she didn't have patience. Jane was always on the move. She spent very little time at her assigned desk in the bullpen. When she was at her desk, more than likely she was fidgeting with a pencil or paperclip. She just couldn't sit still.

Jane realized after a few years of friendship with Maura that she was in love with her and didn't want to go through life without Maura by her side. She asked Maura out on a date and a few months later she asked Maura to marry her. They had a small intimate wedding, with only close friends and family in attendance.

Two years into their marriage they decided they wanted to have a child. They decided that Maura would carry the baby as Jane's job was so strenuous. After several failed attempts, Jane said she would try to get pregnant. Jane was successful on the first attempt.

Maura was a little frustrated by the fact that Jane was able to get pregnant so fast. Ultimately, she was happy that Jane was pregnant. They both wanted the baby and it didn't matter who carried the baby. Jane knew that Maura wanted to have a biological baby so they used Maura's egg. There were a few extra steps to make this happen but they both felt it would be worth it. Jane would carry Maura's biological child.

Maura knew that Jane would become irritable during the later stages of pregnancy. She tried to be as patient and loving with Jane as possible. During her third month of pregnancy, Jane was placed on desk duty fulltime and not allowed out in the field. She primarily worked on cold cases.

The lieutenant let her work on active cases with Korsak and Frost, but only in house, no field work or questioning suspects. He did allow her to observe the suspects being questioned and Jane added questions here and there to assist. Korsak and Frost appreciated her input.

Jane's lack of patience reared its ugly head when Jane was eight months pregnant. Jane was ready to evict the baby from her womb on multiple occasions. Maura couldn't help but laugh sometimes. Jane was just too funny. Early on in her pregnancy they had talked about what to expect at different times during the pregnancy, but at the eighth month she had reached her limit.

After dinner one evening, they were sitting on the couch getting ready to watch a movie when Jane starting fussing again and wanted to eject her womb's current occupant. "Jane, the gestation period of a human baby is 280 days or 40 weeks. Did you know that the gestation period for a baby elephant is almost two years. Can you imagine that? Human babies need the time to develop properly. The …"

Jane put her hand up to Maura's mouth in an effort to silence her wife. She knew that Maura could continue describing the entire process and Jane didn't think that she could handle that conversation at that moment. She was at this moment pleased however that she was not a pregnant elephant. Maura simply smiled and kissed Jane's hand.

"I know Maur, I know but I can't handle this anymore. Can you make our baby come out now? I don't want to go through this for another month." Jane told Maura as she lowered her hand so she could kiss her.

When they broke the kiss to breathe, Maura told her, "Jane, it doesn't work that way. The baby will come out when the baby is ready to and not a minute before then." Maura tried the best she could to make Jane believe that but she wasn't having any luck convincing her.

"Maur, I am so over being pregnant and not being able to drink coffee and beer. I want a cup of coffee." Jane had promised that she wouldn't have a cup of coffee during her pregnancy, not even decaf, which she hated but at times felt that decaf coffee was better than no coffee.

"Jane."

"Maur, please."

Maura just continued kissing her all over, trying to make Jane feel better. She knew that Jane had lost all of her patience and was now getting frustrated. Kissing Jane was only a distraction because as soon as they had stopped kissing, Jane was back to her state of not having any more patience. "Maur, I want our baby served with an eviction notice, NOW!" Maura took Jane upstairs to their bedroom and tried to get her in a comfortable position so that they could sleep.

Jane's next doctor's appointment was two days away. On the way to the doctor's appointment her water broke. Maura was so happy. She knew it would only be a short period of time before their baby would make his appearance and hopefully Jane would return to her normal self. One could hope, Maura thought.

It took the baby another eighteen hours before he graced them with his presence. Maura was thrilled. She wanted her wife back. Jane had become so miserable. Jane let out a huge sigh when Marcus James Rizzoli-Isles entered the world. She was so happy and then the contractions started again a few minutes later, she had forgotten about the afterbirth.

After MJ had been weighed and cleanup the nurse placed MJ on Jane's chest so that she could hold him for the first time. Jane lit up with such a huge smile. "He's beautiful, Maur," Jane said as she looked over to Maura.

"Yes love, he is. He looks like the baby pictures that your mother showed me a few months ago. His hair is dark like yours, and his complexion is like yours. I hope he had your eyes also."

"Maur." Jane couldn't say anything else as tears were coming down her face. Maura leaned over and kissed her tears away.

When they were selecting names, they liked the nickname that Jane had called the baby, MJ. For Jane MJ represented Maura Jr. for Maura it meant Mini Jane. They both wanted a miniature version of the other. They settled on the name Marcus James, because both names sounded like their names.

Within half an hour the baby and his mothers were laying in Jane's hospital bed doting after him. Jane was once again telling jokes, Maura was so relieved. This might be the only baby they have. He was so adorable, Maura felt as though she would be fine if they only had the one baby. They would have that discussion down the road, because she wanted to have a Rizzoli baby.

Jane looked down at the little boy in her arms and told Maura, "Maur, I feel like I have a renewed strength that I didn't feel until this little man was born. I promise I will try to be patient, but I must confess in my thirty plus years it hasn't happened yet but I will try."

"Jane, that is all anyone can do. Little MJ will need for both of us to be strong and patient at times. This is a new experience for both of us. We babysat TJ and we did okay with him. We will be okay now that we have MJ."

"I will try Maur, I really will." Jane promised.

"That is all I can ask Jane."

Over the next few months Jane and Maura discovered that being mothers brought out strengths they didn't know that they had. They were both pleased to find out that Jane was very patient with MJ.

MJ turned out to be the love of their lives. They were also pleased to discover that they could do anything as long as they did it together. Together they had the patience to accomplish almost anything, that as an individual they didn't think they could. They made each other stronger and more patient.
