When they arrived back at the compound, Deadpool had seen the couple walk in, and he wasted no time pulling her into a hug. With Vanessa and Weasel bundling into a group hug, Deadpool sighed heavily, "I heard you were stabbed, Rapunzel. Can you stop trying to be a damn hero?"
"I want to stop, but it's instinct, though." She confessed before he released her. "We caught him up on everything while you were gone, kid." Tony told her, Peter looking at the misfit group curiously. Desi didn't speak much about this group, but Natasha had told him what had happened. He could see why they were still close after all this time.
"I heard you got yourself some boy toys. Is this one of them?" Vanessa asked, looking over to Bucky. "Oh! I'm sorry. Bucky, this is Vanessa. Vanessa, this is Bucky, my boyfriend." Desi introduced them.
"Nice to meet you." Bucky said, flashing her a warm smile.
"Same, a pleasure," Vanessa said, nudging her friend, "he's handsome." Desi blushed, but Wade stood face to face with him. "Listen here, lover boy, I'll come for you if you hurt her," he spoke, "comprendo muchacho?"
"That won't happen." Bucky swore.
"We originally came because we did some digging on the data we found at that last job," Weasel interrupted, looking back to Tony, "I figured you all would want to see it."
"What is it?" Tony asked, approaching closer when he saw the USB drive in his hand.
"There's a target on Agent Fury- two agents named Rumalow and Carter are in on this. They're scheduling an attack any day now. One on Fury, the other at the headquarters." Vanessa answered. "Looks like your little friends are looking to take over the place. They're affiliated with Hydra," Wade added. Desi looked over to Bucky, a worried look on her face, "Steve was going to report to him."
"He can take care of himself…' Bucky assured her, but he knew it wasn't putting her at ease. Chip whined, nudging his head against her thigh, bringing her some comfort, but the team had to focus on the top at hand.
"We'll need to head to the SHIELD Headquarters, but the other group needs to get to Fury." Tony spoke.
"I'll head towards Fury while you get to the headquarters," Desi spoke.
"No, you're staying here to rest. Parker is going to watch you." Tony said.
"But you'll need me. Besides, what if Hydra comes here, and I won't let Peter handle them alone. I couldn't live with that." She spoke. "I can go with her, Mr. Stark. I can sweep her right out of there." Peter added.
"Your Aunt May will kill me if something were to happen to you. Deadpool can go after Fury with Desi. Bucky and I will head to the headquarters. We rendezvous there." Tony told him. "But I can help!" Peter chimed, but Tony wasn't hearing it, "These aren't your normal robbers, okay? They will kill you on sight."
"You can hang back with me, kid. I'll be doing a lot of surveillance." Weasel told him, but the teenager was unhappy with all of this. The team walked out to see the Quinjet primed up and ready to go, hearing the engine as they climbed into the aircraft.
"Let's finish this."
With the help of Nat and Sam, Steve led the charge to the SHIELD aircraft when he saw Tony zoom past them. "Tony?" Steve questioned. "Barnes and I came as back-up. Thought you could use a hand." Tony said through the comms.
"And Destiny?"
"She's with Deadpool. They're securing Fury and heading our way." Bucky answered. "Hydra agents are throughout the facility; be careful." With Tony and Bucky saving as many SHIELD agents as possible while keeping Hydra agents at bay, Steve, Nat, and Sam took care of the outside.
When Deadpool, Vanessa, and Desi arrived, Fury ran into the headquarters as a Hydra aircraft opened beside them, pouring out many troops. "I got these bitches!" Wade shouted.
"No, me!"
Desi fought them off relentlessly, killing them swiftly when Desi was thrown to the ground. She felt something clasp around her neck as she stabbed the man in the throat and stood up. Trying to remove the neckpiece, she knew it was fruitless and attempted to throw a shield at Veronica.
A frown crept on her face; she was powerless now because of the damn neckpiece. Vanessa doing her best to fend them off, fearless despite being human, when she hears the click of the gun. She felt her blood run cold, forcing herself to stand still when Desi and Wade saw it in slow motion. Both went running towards her based on instinct…but Desi was closer.
Desi stood in front of her as the gun went off, piercing her in the chest. Vanessa's eyes widened, gasping as the young healer fell to her feet.
"Desi, no!"
Deadpool and Vanessa were thrown aback by a smoke bomb when the enemy carried Desi away into their aircraft. Deadpool took Vanessa's arm, fought through the smoke, and jumped into the plane as the door closed. Wade could see the vision of Desi falling to the ground, the scene replaying in his head, fighting them and killing them off.
Vanessa crumbled to the floor, taking the healer's head into her lap. Desi was crying, panting as her breath shortened, "Vanessa, don't…leave… I'm so scared." Vanessa teared up but smiled, trying to be strong for her, "I'm right here pumpkin."
"Tell everyone I'm sorry."
"I will."
"And my pups…watch…them…for me."
"I will, baby girl. Anything you want."
Deadpool had finished killing everyone when he returned to Desi, falling to his knees as he tore off his mask. His eyes watered as she smiled at him, "Wade..."
"Here, let me take this off, kid. Try to heal yourself for me." Wade said, ripping the contraction off her desperately. He ran his hands through her hair. Her hands glowed barely, but she dropped her hands to her chest.
"Thank you…for…saving me. You all…are my home. I love….you all."
Vanessa broke out crying, feeling the girl go limp in her lap, her head sagging to the side as she drew her last breath. Deadpool lifted her as Vanessa stood but wasn't ready to let go yet.
"Guys, we need a status update. What's going on?"
He refused to answer Tony's call, turning off the comms. Vanessa didn't say anything but knew they had to tell them eventually. Deadpool carefully laid her on the seats, looking over to Vanessa. "Watch her for me. I'll set us to land near our hide-out. Warn Weasel to get out there and to take the dogs- now."
Vanessa called Weasel, and he left as soon as he could with her dogs, as they promised they would. Landing off a coast in Maine, they made their way into the pier. No one would bother them there, for now, Wade carrying Desi inside and placing her carefully on the bed.
Vanessa set up their laptop, pulling it up as she sat down. "What the hell are you doing right now?" Deadpool asked her. "It's been a few hours, Wade. We need to tell them before they come looking for us," she answered before looking back at him, "Do you want to do it, or shall I?"
Deadpool took a deep breath but sat down, taking his mask off. Feeling Vanessa squeeze his shoulders in reassurance, he turned on the vid, clicking on Tony's icon. The webcam turned on, and he looked down briefly.
"Mr. Stark, I'm sure you're wondering where we are, and I want to tell you that you won't be able to find us for a while. This…message… there's no easy way to say this, but things aren't good- for anyone. Destiny she…was immobilized by Hydra. They blocked her abilities, but she defended Vanessa and… got hit. She's…dead, Stark. She's not coming back," Wade said, moving back briefly to show the body of Desi,
"I'll clean her up and send her back. Give her a proper burial, maybe." Vanessa briefly looked down at Desi before returning to Deadpool when she took a double take. Her eyes widened when she saw Desi's body glow, the room slowly lighting up from her glow.
"Uh, Wade."
"This was on me, and I don't-"
"Wade!"
"What, woman!?"
Looking back at her, he hissed as the light consumed the room, the electricity blowing as the light slowly dimmed. Vanessa and Wade carefully approached, noticing immediately her hair. Her black hair was gone and was replaced with platinum-white blonde hair. The bullet wounds that were once there had disappeared…
And her eyes shot open.
When the team arrived back at the compound, the team was waiting patiently as they could when Loki and Thor arrived. "Where's Lady Rainlily? Is she alright?" Thor asked, knowing his brother was dying to be by her side again. The team looked at each other hesitantly, but Bucky finally spoke.
"We don't know." He answered. "What?" Loki asked in disbelief when a chime came through the intercoms.
"Sir, we received a video update from Deadpool."
"Pull it up." Tony spoke, bringing the video and opening the holo-vid. Deadpool sat there without his mask, his eyes red as Vanessa stood behind him, looking distraught.
"Mr. Stark, I'm sure you're wondering where we are, and I want to tell you that you won't be able to find us for a while. This…message… there's no easy way to say this, but things aren't good- for anyone. Destiny, she…was immobilized by Hydra. They blocked her abilities with some neckpiece, but she defended Vanessa and… got hit. She's…dead, Stark. She's not coming back," Wade said, moving back briefly to show the body of Desi,
Nat and Clint looked away, Tony's jaw clenching as he fought his own tears, but his heart fell in his chest. Peter was just as tearful, Steve looking down, a silent tear rolling down his face. Bucky and Loki held their anger and frustrations but refused to peel their eyes away from the video.
"I'll clean her up and send her back. Give her a proper burial, maybe." When she took a double take, Vanessa briefly looked down at Desi before returning to Deadpool. Her eyes widened when she saw Desi's body glow, the room slowly lighting up from her glow.
"Uh, Wade."
"This was on me, and I don't-"
"Wade!"
"What, woman!?"
The team looked back at the video, watching as Desi's body elevated, her body growing brightly when Wade hissed. The light consumed the room, the electricity blowing as the video cut off.
"Was that Desi?" Peter asked, "Does that mean she could be alive?"
"Was that a power surge?" Nat questioned with a nod from Bruce, "Looks like."
"She could still be alive." Bucky added.
"Or she could be dead." Clint stated, feeling the pain as he said the words.
"We don't know for sure, but I do know one thing," Tony stated, his face filled with anger and determination, "We need to find Deadpool."
