Sovereign stayed with Revenge overnight, Revenge was grateful for her sister's company and was able to sleep somewhat peacefully, unlike her sister who struggled to sleep as her words came back to her. Those words haunted her to her very core. Preventing her from being able to get to sleep till the early hours of the morning, entering an unsteady sleep.
The morning air felt colder than before, and with it was a lowered morale. But time waited for no-one so Anson continued on with the plan and got up earlier than usual to meet up with Seraph and began to load supplies onboard the S-Class Submarine moored up by the dockside. Sheffield and Phoebe came along to help not long afterwards.
Anson wasn't expecting Sovereign to arrive, however. "How is Revenge?" she asked as the elder Battleship walked over to her.
"She's… She's resting for the time being, Resource is keeping an eye on her"
"I would ask you to stay back here so that you can take care of Revenge as Resource requested, but something tells me that you'll be coming with us anyway"
"Yes. It wouldn't be right for me to leave you at the very last minute and sabotage the plan. Once I return, I will properly comply with Resource's request to attend the evaluations"
"Very well then. But do not hesitate to keep me updated on your situation" Anson replied with a gentle hand to her friend's shoulder.
"I will" Sovereign answered.
By mid-morning the ship was stocked with food for the journey. It was going to be a long trip, and Seraph knew that there would be plenty of patrols to avoid. So, once everyone who was participating in the raid was present, she took them onboard the submarine and guided them through the routine that would be undertaken.
"When I order 'Silent Running' I want everyone to be as quiet as possible. Enemy Radar will be able to pick up any noise. Whispering should be the safest option, as long as I can hear it." Seraph began as everyone was present on the bridge. "If I require a crash dive. Everyone who is not required on the important instruments will move to the bow of the vessel to ensure we dive as fast as possible."
"Who do you require on the instruments?" Norfolk asked, a little unsure of the cramped nature of the sub she was in.
"Swift and Z20 shall operate the Hydrophones and Sonar. I imagine both of you have adequate experience with your own devices?"
The destroyers nodded.
"I can operate all systems on board my vessel just fine, but having the task dealt with by another allows me to focus more on getting us there."
She gave them a rundown on the rest of the vessel and was ready to depart half an hour later. Anson gave her farewells to Hector before re-boarding the submarine and the vessel departed from Felixstowe, heading out into the Channel to travel up to Scapa Flow.
The vessel quickly submerged once out into the open sea and maintained a steady course. Anson and Seraph went over the map to plot a route, markers Seraph had already noted down on previous patrols informing Anson of routes Siren fleets had been taking and where Siren ships sat to monitor lanes. Swift and Z20 listened intently to their respective devices as Siren warships sailed only metres above them. It was tense for all of them, the creaking and groaning of the sub not making things any better, especially for Norfolk. She didn't show it like she would have before, but she was afraid. Not that the others would blame her nor disagree with that thought. Anson kept a straight face, as did Seraph as they looked to the ceiling of the vessel.
They surfaced the boat in the dead of night to allow for the team to breathe fresh air again. Seraph, Anson, Formidable, Norfolk and Wasp stood up on the bridge keeping watch, the carriers having deployed aircraft to recon ahead of them. Seraph also kept an eye on her radar in case anything else popped up that the aircraft missed. "What do you expect to find at Scapa?" Wasp asked to break the silence.
"I saw a few ships when I poked around a week ago. Two Cruisers at least. A Battleship and maybe a Carrier. The Sirens may have moved some of them since. So we may rescue more. We may rescue less" Seraph replied.
"We will have to hope that there's someone there to be rescued," Anson commented as she scanned the ocean. She didn't say it, but whilst she was keeping her expectations low, she hoped that George or Howe were there. She failed to save Duke of York, she wasn't going to fail again if the chance presented itself.
The next day and a bit was a repeat of diving for most of the day, and then surfacing for the night, avoiding the Sirens as they sailed past the coast of Northern England before they'd move back out into deeper waters in the North Sea prior to making a straight heading for Scapa Flow.
However, this night would be different.
Fog had set in, making seeing any enemy ships near impossible. Swift and Z20 kept their ears and eyes on their instruments to scan the sea around them as Seraph and the others continued to keep watch above on the bridge. "Bah. We're bound to sail into something and get into trouble in this weather" Anson grumbled.
"Hallo? Is er iemand?" A voice from the fog said. Everyone instantly was alert.
"Was that German?" Wasp inquired, unsure of what she heard.
"Hallo?" Came the call again.
"No. That's Dutch" Norfolk replied as she turned to look in the direction she thought she could hear the sounds coming from. "Someone give me a rope"
"What are you doing Norfolk?" Anson asked, confused.
"If it's a Siren trap, you can haul me back quick before they can try anything. If not, It'll lead you to whatever I find" Norfolk replied as a rope was hauled up from inside the ship by one of Formidable's planes, Norfolk tied it around her waist before jumping over the railing and sailing out towards the sounds of the voice, disappearing into the fog moments later.
"I hope she knows what she's doin'." Wasp remarked before they heard Norfolk again.
"I'm safe! I found the source of the voices" Norfolk called out.
"What is it?" Anson called back.
"Dutch Submarines! Two of them. I can try to tow them towards you"
"Be quick! I don't want to be jumped by any Sirens" Seraph called back as she readied the bow gun on her vessel, just in case it was needed.
They could see the outline of the Submarines before they could see Norfolk, and she brought the two vessels alongside Seraph's. O-21 and O-24 could be made out on the bows of the two stricken vessels. Norfolk got up onto the bow of O-21 and checked on the shipgirl that was laying against the conning tower, her sister right beside her. "You're with friends. It's alright now" Norfolk said softly and O-21 tiredly nodded before closing her eyes. O-24 picked her up and followed Norfolk onboard Seraph's vessel, the two Dutch Submarines disappearing for the time being as O-21 was taken inside and laid down on one of the bunks, O-24 staying by her.
"Formidable. Keep our guests company. Just in-case" Anson asked quietly and the carrier disappeared towards the bunks. She then turned to Norfolk who looked a bit guilty. "It paid off that you got them here safely. But they could have been Sirens" she spoke softly.
"I know." Norfolk replied, looking down. "I just… I want.."
"It's alright. I get what you're trying to say" Anson said with a reassuring hand on the cruiser's shoulder. Norfolk let out a small smile as Anson looked at Seraph. The Submarine looked somewhat annoyed but said nothing as she had the vessel dive again.
Several hours passed before Seraph brought the ship up to periscope depth, taking a moment to search the surroundings before she brought the periscope back down again. "We should be arriving outside Burwick shortly. I shall remain onboard with the Dutch girls whilst you lead the land party" Seraph said.
"Are we not heading into Scapa Flow?" Norfolk asked.
"It would be too dangerous to go in directly," Anson replied. "Going in by land would also enable us to sneak around Siren patrols that may be lurking around the place. What was security like when you were scouting here before?" Anson asked the submarine.
"Considerable numbers of Sirens. It could have changed. But I wouldn't get your hopes up for this being an easy rescue"
"Alright then. Let's get this show on the road" Anson said as she climbed up the ladder and checked to see if the area was clear. Once she was satisfied, she gestured for the others to climb up and join her, the team quickly sailing towards the shore as Seraph submerged again, heading for deeper water to hide in till she was needed.
Anson took point with Sheffield, the pair scanning every little thing as the team crept up onto land. It was quiet.
Too quiet.
"Anything?" Wasp whispered.
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing" Anson replied.
"I don't have a nice feeling about all this" Norfolk remarked, her legs wobbling a little bit.
"It'll be fine, Norfolk" Formidable whispered softly.
"Hold up" Sovereign spoke suddenly.
"What's wrong? Any Sirens?" Anson asked, checking her surroundings again.
"No. No Sirens. I'm… feeling a familiar presence" Sovereign replied as she took point behind a building and carefully looked out around the corner. "Maple!" She shouted quietly.
Silence
"Maple!" she called again.
"T-Tree" came from a voice nearby. Sovereign moved inside the building and found the source of the voice.
Lying on a mattress, Webley to hand, was a Blonde haired woman.
"Oak…" Sovereign remarked as she knelt down before her sister.
It was foggy and silent. Nothing was around and all was silent and tranquil. Suddenly a purple portal appeared and a figure nearly fell through, seemingly having been mid-swing of their sword. The Sword hit the water and threw up some water, rippling for a few meters before vanishing. As soon as the sword struck the water, the portal was gone, leaving the figure who wielded the sword on their own.
"Bastard!" The figure yelled in frustration. "They don't even have the spine to fight us, eh sis?" the figure asked their sibling. But no reply came.
"Sis?" the figure asked, their tone changing from anger to concern as they looked around for their sibling. "Renown?!" they called out again, hoping for an answer.
"RENOWN!?"
All they were met with was deafening silence…
