Tammy was just coming into her room after a long day of school. She was very tired after classes and just wanted to nap. But right when she was about to, someone was calling her. Tammy picked up the phone and asked, "Hello?"
"Oh hey Tammy!" said Superintendent Charles on the other line, "Glad to know that I have the right number! Though, I do wish it was your parents that I had gotten ahold of." "What's going on?" asked Tammy, feeling like Charles was trying to get to something. Indeed, Charles got to the point, "I've noticed that you haven't been doing well in many classes. As superintendent, I'm able to get early access to report cards. Yours very much sticks out like a sore thumb. It would be a real shame if your parents saw it a few weeks early."
Tammy wasn't the type to get nervous easily, but that made her anxiety go up by a lot. "What?!" she exclaimed, "D-Don't do that! Why would you do that anyway?!" "I think you know why," Charles said, not giving Tammy a direct answer, "But how about this, I'll make you a deal. Brighton's High School band was originally going to play in Ann Arbor at Michigan Stadium next week. However, the band ended up going on a class trip to Washington DC earlier than anticipated, so now the school system is scrambling for a replacement band. Supposedly, you make a great leader. So I was thinking maybe you and your friends could cover for them!"
Tammy want to prove to Charles that it was true she was a good leader. "That's right, I am a great leader!" said Tammy, but then started feeling hesitant on what to say, "But I mean, when it comes to band stuff...well..." "I knew it!" laughed Charles, "You don't have that leadership if you can't get your friends to do a band! Well, I'll just let you get on with your life, until that fateful day comes."
"HOLD IT!" Tammy snapped, "I know why you're doing this! Your only doing this because you lost that bet a while ago! Well guess what?! I will get my friends together and we'll play at Michigan Stadium next week! If we do good, then you will not give that report card to my parents early! In fact, I will improve in classes if I win before they get released, just in case!"
"You got yourself a deal then!" Charles laughed, "I will see you next week! And I hope the audience brings earplugs, because they're going to need it!" With that, Charles hung up the phone and so did Tammy. It was hard to come to the realization of what had to be done next.
Later on at night, Duckie and the rest of Tammy's friends were in the garage of her home. They all had a bunch instruments next to them as they all sat down in chairs. "Uhh, so let me get this straight," said Duckie, "Superintendent Charles is threatening to show your parents your report card weeks early. So he made a deal with you saying if we did good as a band at Michigan Stadium, you wouldn't have to worry about it until the time comes?" "I mean, it's the truth," replied Tammy.
"I remember my dad telling me that band class for him was a nightmare," said Rex. "Ironically, my dad used to do well in his band class," said Porter. "I guess you could say Tammy had to drum up a band!" laughed Jessie. "Is 7 of us even going to be enough?" asked Johnny. "Now now guys," said Angelo, "We might not have great experience with instruments, but with a little bit of confidence, I'm sure we can manage! Remember when the yearly talent show was on the line because of Charles? Tammy was sure to turn that around, and she did! So my point is, let's not lose hope in this so quickly guys."
Everyone got their assigned instruments and were soon ready to try them out. Angelo and Jessie had brass instruments, Porter and Rex had wind instruments, and Duckie and Johnny had drums. Tammy gave them the go-ahead to give them a shot. The brass section did surprisingly well, the wind section did okay, and the drum section could have been better. The drum Johnny was banging ended up falling to it's side. "You are lucky those are rentals and not personal instruments of mine," said Tammy.
An hour went by, and a little progress was made. Everyone somewhat got used to the instruments and how to play them. Eventually though, it was getting late and everyone had to head on back home. Tammy thought things could have been better, but it wasn't a bad start. "I know things can only go up from here!" she said.
Unfortunately for Tammy, that statement would not age well.
DAY TWO
Tammy brang her friends with the band equipment to the football field after school, to get everyone used to playing in front of an audience. There were some kids in the bleachers watching what was going on. "This is interesting," said one of them, "There live music here often?" "Not usually," replied another.
Everything was going according to plan and even Johnny seemed to do better with the drums than yesterday. Tammy could see the kids on the bleachers interested in what was going on. "Huh! Things really are going up!" she said.
Jessie began playing her trumpet and things immediately went downhill. It was unclear what had been going on with Jessie's trumpet, but something had clearly happened. It was just fine, until this very moment.
The kids on the bleachers cringed while Tammy became understandably nervous. Jessie noticed what was going on, but kept playing, hoping the problems would even out. Unfortunately, it didn't, until she eventually stopped. Everyone looked at her, as if to say, "What the heck happened?" Jessie looked at her trumpet and just shrugged.
DAY THREE
Everyone was back in Tammy's garage practicing. Admittedly, she didn't want to go back after what had happened. It's not like the band would have been recognized if they played in Michigan Stadium, but it was more or less of the humiliation of what had happened.
Many worked hard, while others worked harder. Johnny was working on a harmonica solo. However, he looked like he was running out of breath. Tammy could see what was going on and grew a little worried for Johnny. When Johnny eventually finished, he looked like he was about to pass out.
"Umm, just a heads up to everyone," said Tammy, "Please don't work yourselves to the point where you feel like you are about to pass out."
DAY FOUR
This was where things started to get a little ugly.
Duckie was getting annoyed with Porter. The reason behind it was because supposedly, Porter was giving Duckie a hard time on what he was playing and how it should be done. The two got very close to getting into a fight. Luckily, Tammy was able to de-escalate the situation before it could get any worse.
When it was time for everyone to go home, Tammy couldn't have been more happy. She could feel the tension between Duckie and Porter the entire time they practiced. Practice itself went well, but it was clear the issues were starting to build.
DAY FIVE
Yet another practice day, but this time, it was much different than yesterday. The tension was so palpable between everyone that it worried Angelo. In the middle of practice, he went to Tammy.
"Hey Tammy," he whispered to her, "I'm getting really worried. Everyone is talking behind each other's backs. I don't know if we're even going to do well because of this." "Don't worry Angelo, we'll be fine," Tammy replied, "It's only two days away. If it makes you feel better, tomorrow is our last day of practice before we are supposed to go to Michigan Stadium." It was hard to say if Angelo saw it as a good thing, but he did nod in response and went back to practicing.
Everyone left Tammy's place yet again and she, as much as she tried not to, was starting to worry about things. Angelo wasn't wrong about what was going on either. The tension was clear to see, and it looked like it could explode at any moment.
DAY SIX
This was it, the last practice day and just a day before the big event. However, they weren't playing in Tammy's garage this time, since her father had to use it. So instead, they went back to the football field. Tammy didn't want to go back there because of what happened a few days ago, but to her luck, there wasn't anyone there this time. Since it was the last day, everyone seemed in good spirits, or so she thought.
"Well guys, this is our last night together before the show tomorrow!" said Tammy, "And I know there have been some arguments, including some not necessarily improving since we started, but I have an idea. If we play as loud as we can, maybe it won't matter to the audience! Everybody ready?" Everyone got their instruments ready and were about to give it their all. "And one and a two and a one, two, three, four!" announced Tammy.
Everyone used their instruments and it was unbearably loud. The noise was so bad that it literally hurt Tammy's ears. She gave the signal for everyone to stop what they were doing. "Okay, maybe we need a new strategy," Tammy suggested.
"Well, I have one," said Porter, "You were talking about how bands are supposed to work as a team yesterday, right? This might just be me, but I don't think others here listened to you. So I think-" "Yeah, it is just you!" said Duckie, "And what is that supposed to mean? Sounds like you just want everything to be perfect. News flash, your not perfect either!"
The arguments broke out between a majority of the group. Both Tammy and Angelo tried to get the arguments between nearly everyone to stop, but nobody listened to them.
"Oh come on Jessie!" said Rex, "Porter does have a point!" "You really like to look out for him, even when he says the most ridiculous things," sighed Jessie, "You might as well get married to him!" Rex looked angry at what Jessie said, but before he could say anything, Johnny came in. "Not to interrupt you guys, but maybe we should de-escalate the situation with Duckie and Porter before they literally fight each other?"
Rex grinned deviously. Jessie could see it and wasn't too sure what he was thinking, but didn't like it. "You know Johnny, I think there's something you should know," said Rex, "I think Jessie has a crush on you." "WHAT?!" exclaimed Jessie, trying to keep herself together, "T-T-That's not true! I-I d-don't know what your talking about!" "Don't try to hide it jokester!" Rex continued, "I thought Porter was crazy when he first told me that, but with time, I came to realize that he is right!" He then faced Johnny again, "How do you not realize that? She constantly blushes when you say nice things about her, she's gotten oddly close to you on many occasions, and if I recall correctly, Jessie one time accidentally called you handsome at one point?"
Johnny was extremely confused on everything. "I mean, she did call me that, but it was by accident," Johnny replied, with confusion seen very clearly, then looked at Jessie, "What is going on? Is Rex serious right now?" Jessie looked like she was about to cry but also it was clear she was very angry at what Rex told Johnny. The poodle grabbed one of the instruments and murmured, "Why you..." She was about to hit Rex with it, until she was interrupted.
"ENOUGH!!!" Tammy shouted, which also stopped Duckie and Rex from nearly fighting, "I can't do this with the way you guys are behaving! You guys are about to tear each other apart! If you guys were to do the big event tomorrow, you guys would probably just argue and have a fight actually happen for heavens sake! It's not worth it! It's just not worth it!" Tammy sighed as she hung her head and walked off, "You might as well return the instruments or do whatever you guys were intending with them. I'll just tell Superintendent Charles tomorrow that things didn't work out..."
Everyone looked at each other in silence, until Angelo broke it. "What the heck guys?!" he said sternly, "You realize what your bickering did? Now Tammy likely feels terrible! This is not what she wanted and neither did I. Bands are supposed to work together and find solutions to problems, not enhance those problems!" Everyone knew Angelo was right. This was something he nor Tammy would have wanted. Duckie especially felt guilty for this, knowing his best friend didn't want the situation to turn into a nightmare of practice.
"Tammy was there for us when we were going through stuff and we were there for her," Angelo continued, "How come of all times, now it just stops?" Nobody really knew what to say. "I guess we just got carried away," said Porter, "I didn't even realize that there was so much tension between most of us." "What he means is, we forgot about why we were doing this in the first place," said Rex.
"That's my point," said Angelo, "We need to remember why we are doing this. It's not for fighting or some petty contest to see who's better. We are doing this for a friend who's looked out for us as much as we've looked out for her. So I think we should set aside our differences and make Tammy proud!" Duckie, Johnny, Jessie, Porter, and Rex cheered. "I think we're gonna need some marching band outfits and some more instruments," said Duckie, "Because I have an idea..."
The big day was finally here. The football event on the inside of Michigan Stadium had been going on for a little while now. The sun set as it was slowly turning to night. The game was almost halfway complete, which would mean the halftime event, and by halftime event, that ment Tammy and what should be her band to go play.
Tammy came into Ann Arbor on her bike. She approached the stadium, very tired out from all the biking. Tammy didn't even want to show up for the event, but she thought she might as well inform Superintendent Charles that he had won. And to her suspicion, Charles was waiting for her right outside the stadium.
"There you are!" said Superintendent Charles, "I was starting to wonder if you would show up! So, where's your band?" "Well Superintendent," sighed Tammy, "Things didn't work out. My friends all just got into a big fight over it. So I guess, you win..." "If things didn't work out, then who's that?" asked Superintendent Charles, pointing behind Tammy.
Tammy looked behind herself to see all her friends with various instruments and in red marching band uniforms. "Oh my gosh!" said Tammy, "T-T-That would be my band then!" "Hey Tammy!" said Duckie, "We're ready to perform!" "Well Tammy, this is exactly how I pictured your band would look!" said Charles. Johnny did a little dance, which gave Charles a confused look. "That's his eager dance," said Tammy. Duckie gave Tammy a band outfit, just like he and the rest. "Just for you!" said Duckie enthusiastically.
Meanwhile in the stadium, the coach blew his whistle and the game was stopped as the football players on both sides left the field and went to their lockers. "Alright football fans," said the announcer, "We are halfway complete with the game, so you know what that means, halftime!" The crowd responded positively to this. The game had been extremely eventful throughout, leading to the halftime event. Everyone was waiting for this moment.
Superintendent Charles got Tammy and the gang through the gates and explained to security that they were to play for the halftime event. They all then went to an under part of the stadium and boarded a platform which took them up. Charles snickered, while Tammy looked very unsure. Duckie looked at Tammy and said, "Everything will be alright Tammy, trust me." She wanted to trust her best friend with those words, but it was understandably difficult to, especially when she didn't see everyone deciding to put their differences aside yesterday.
"Okay football fans," the announcer said grandly, "Put your hands together, for the Brighton Middle School band!" Somewhere along the field, an opening happened. It was revealed that part of it worked like doors. And just a second after it opened, came Tammy, her band, and Superintendent Charles as the platform reached it's destination. The crowd went wild when they saw the band! This was the moment they had been waiting for!
Tammy just realized something. "Wait a minute," she said, "How did you guys get here?" "We took the train to get here," said Angelo, "We're surprised you decided to take bike. I mean, it's definitely cheaper, but it takes longer, you know?" Tammy nodded and said nervously, "I hope you guys are ready." She then looked behind herself to see Charles smirking. She looked back at her band to see with other instruments next to them, other than drums or brass instruments. However, Tammy couldn't question it right now, as the show must go on. "Let's get this over with," she said using her conductor stick, "One...two...three...four..."
They all first played the brass instruments for the opening. At first, Tammy didn't know where it was going, but then it went from unpredictable, to incredible! Once the opening was done, Johnny started playing a keyboard with a beautiful crossover sound of piano and synth. A spotlight was then put on Duckie as he started singing into a microphone. Tammy was speechless at how well they were doing, and so was the superintendent. Little did they know, it only got better from here.
Just then, Jessie started playing the electric drums, as everyone else, except for herself, Tammy, and Duckie, started playing other forms of electronic instruments that sat adjacent to them. It only seemed to get better and sound better from there. When much of the crowd took out their lighters, that's when it became clear that much of the crowd really enjoyed it. Superintendent Charles was now starting to grow nervous, and Tammy could see it on his face. She threw her conductor stick and giving signals to her band to give it their all.
This was something Tammy genuinely didn't expect to see or hear at all, not after what happened yesterday. But she realized that everyone decided to put their differences aside, and make this the best halftime even possible! How did Tammy know this? She just knew subconsciously.
Charles was now becoming increasingly annoyed by this, eventually becoming angry. "How are they doing this good?!" he exclaimed, "How does Tammy keep beating me?!" Charles wasn't paying attention to his surroundings, which made him fall off the platform and hurt his leg. Paramedics took him away as Tammy waved a little goodbye to him.
Tammy just enjoyed the music as it went on for another 3 or so minutes. When it was finished, the crowd roared with applause! They loved every minute of it and Tammy could see that things had paid off in the end! She smiled and bowed to the crowd, knowing that she and her band, who were all her close friends, were getting applause unlike any they had gotten before! Her friends also bowed too.
Later on, Tammy and her friends were in a locker room with all their instruments aside. "We did!" said Porter, "I can't believe it, but we did it!" "For such a circus that was our practice, we sure came out with better results than expected!" added Rex. "Just to be clear and to make sure I was right about what I thought, did you guys put your differences aside just for this?" asked Tammy. "It was more than just putting our differences aside Tammy," replied Duckie, "We realized that we had to save you from the superintendent's plot. We needed to back you up and if it wasn't for Angelo talking some sense into us, we wouldn't be here right now." He and Tammy looked at Angelo. "I mean, it's the truth," said Angelo, "Though, the extra instruments was Duckie's idea. But as we've seen, that idea worked out better than we expected!"
Johnny and Jessie were facing away from the group as they were having their own conversation, separate from them. "You know, you did a really good job today!" said Jessie. "Thanks, you too," replied Johnny, "But if you don't mind me asking, it's about yesterday. Is it true about what Rex says? You know, you having a crush on me?" Jessie was incredibly hesitant on what to say. Part of her wanted to say yes, but part of her wanted to say no too. More importantly, how would Johnny react if she said yes? Was it worth taking that chance?
After seconds of hesitation, she made the ultimate decision. "Yes Johnny, I do!" she said. Johnny was somehow surprised by this, despite what Rex had said. Then again, Johnny isn't perfect when reading the room at times. "Me???" he asked, "W-Why me of all kids?" "Johnny, it's been going on for much longer than you think," Jessie explained, "When we met in first grade, I knew there was something special about you. We just got along together so well, despite all odds. As the years went by, I began to see you differently. I thought it was just because we had such a powerful friendship, but then I realized something. I wanted to take our friendship to the next level." The poodle took a deep breath, then asked, "Johnny, would you like to be my boyfriend?"
The bear blushed heavily and smiled a shy grin. As surprised as Johnny was and a bit sheepish too, he thought about it. "Well, I don't see why not!" Johnny replied, "I mean, do you really think this will work between us?" Jessie put her hand on Johnny's and said, "I will do everything in my power to make sure it can work out for us. And if you are okay with this, would you like to umm...maybe, uhh...kiss?" Johnny could feel his heart pounding. "I've never kissed before," he said, "Is it just as great in the movies like they say?" "Just like the movies," said Jessie.
The two got closer, then leaned towards each other, sharing their first kiss together. It felt undoubtedly spectacular for both of them. And after what felt like an eternity of kissing, they stopped, still holding hands, and looked into each others eyes. Little did they know, both Duckie and Tammy were looking at them, while the rest of their friends still talked, not noticing what was happening. "Aww, how cute," Duckie said with a grin. "Heh, lovebirds," Tammy chuckled.
Just then, the group made up of 3 from the press walked through the door. "Hey guys," said one of them, "You 7 did spectacular over there on the field! Would you be alright if we took a picture of you all together? We plan to publish it and your names on the newsletter next week, so everyone knows you for the mighty fine job you all did!" "Count me in!" said Angelo.
Tammy, Duckie, Johnny, Jessie, Angelo, Porter, and Rex all got together for their group picture! In just a matter of seconds, the photographer got his camera mounted and set up for the photograph. He then took a picture of them, which would later be published as intended.
In the picture, it showed the 7 friends as happy as could be. Proud of their accomplishment, and proud to have each other...
THE END!
This was it, the final episode of Duckie and Tammy Season 2! This is also gonna be the final episode of the series until further notice. It could come back months from now, or it could come back years from now. There is no particular day, time, or year for it to come back. But if it doesn't come back or have a Season 3, I hope this was a fitting ending to it!
