Hello guys!
First of all I would highly recommend "Fourth Wing" to anyone who loves dragons as much as I do. Second dialogue from the book will be in this fic, that and all characters rightfully belong to Rebecca Yarros. Third all OC's are mine. Fourth Sarah has chocolate brown hair and blue eyes. Her primary weapons are swords and the sai's she receives from Ellie. Yes Sarah and Ellie are named after the two girls from "Last of Us". I hope you guys enjoy this fic told from Sarah's point of view. Not sure who to pair Sarah up with at the moment but I have someone in mind.
Sarah's POV
"Be careful out there sis" my younger sister Ellie told me after giving me a good luck hug. Today was Conscription Day and it could either be an exciting event for someone entering the Rider's Quadrant or it could be their worst nightmare and possibly death.
In a few minutes, I would be heading out to join this year's other potential riders to cross the deadly Parapet. Round one to make it into Basgiath War College and to become a dragon rider. All my life I trained for this moment and there was no way in hell my life would end today. My parents were both riders and I intended to join them.
Mom and Dad had already told me their goodbyes before going about their duties as riders. Ellie wanted to walk me to the Parapet steps. My little sister was younger than me by two years and she was working her ass off to join our family tradition.
"F**k it looks like it's going to rain"
I looked to the sky and sure enough, the skies were darkening. I wore a slightly tight dark red shirt along with black leather pants and on my feet were brown boots. Dad had them made for me as a birthday present. Mom gifted me a gorgeous sword that had a black hilt and aquamarine stones on it. The blade was a gorgeous silver and it was secure on my back in its scabbard along with my pack.
"Before you go"
Ellie suddenly handed me a pair of silvery Sai's. They were beautiful and they would be useful if I survived the Parapet.
"Happy Belated Birthday sis"
I holstered my sai's before bringing Ellie into my arms. Eventually, we pulled apart and after giving my hand a good luck squeeze she turned and walked away. I took a few deep breaths before I began to walk with the other potential riders.
Most cadets had shortened hair but I refused to cut mine. It was securely pinned back and out of my face which was important for the Parapet. Two other candidates were at the bottom of the tower that led up there.
"Shit nice outfit" the boy with the blonde hair complimented me.
He seemed nice so I smirked.
"Thanks I was told tight clothing is ideal for this obstacle course from hell"
The blonde chuckled just as another candidate arrived and I recognized her.
"F**k! Violet what are you doing here?!"
Violet Sorrengali was the daughter of General Sorrengali and her youngest child. She was meant for the Scribe Quadrant, not the Rider's.
"Hello Sarah, I was forced to enter the Rider's Quadrant I'm afraid"
"Damn it" I growled.
Violet was smart as hell but in my opinion, didn't belong here. It took me a minute to see what she was wearing and it was clothing suitable for the Parapet.
"Sorrengali as in?" the woman beside the blond began.
"Yep," Violet confirmed as we started to climb the stairs.
"The general?"
"The same one" Violet and I answered in unison.
"Wow, nice leathers too" Blondie added.
"Thanks, they're courtesy of my sister"
"Smart move on Mira's part"
Mira Sorrengali was Violet's older sister and a rider as well. Her current rank was Lieutenant. The woman introduced herself as Rhiannon and the blond was Dylan. I conversed some with the trio but I mostly kept my focus on what was ahead.
Eventually we arrived and seeing the Parapet in person made my eyes widen. It was worse now since it was raining cats and dogs. It was also thundering and lightning.
"Not surprised to see you here Hawthorne" a rider with tawny skin and black hair greeted us. I rolled my eyes at Xaden Riorson.
He then smirked but it wasn't one of maliciousness. I shook my head and waited for my turn to cross the Parapet. I was going to do this and earn my f**king dragon.
"Good luck Sarah," Violet told me.
I turned to her and shot her a smirk of my own.
"You as well"
I gave my name to the rider collecting names and then stepped onto the narrow ravine and held my arms out.
Zihnal help me through this I prayed to the god of luck before beginning to walk.
The wind and rain didn't help as I endured my crossing. At times rain got in my eyes and I had to blink the drops away so my vision wouldn't be clouded. Suddenly one of my boots hit something and I wobbled slightly.
"Looks like we got a cadet as pathetic as Sorrengali!" some idiot shouted from behind me.
"F**k you asshole!" I roared over the wind as I regained my balance. I refocused on the task at hand and I carefully resumed my crossing. I would become a rider and this god-forsaken obstacle course from hell wasn't going to f**king stop me.
The end was in sight and my heart began to pound when I suddenly heard a loud scream. I briefly turned to see Dylan had slipped.
"Pull yourself up, Dylan!" Rhiannon yelled.
Violet was pale and to my horror, Dylan lost his grip and his screams became lost with the wind and rain as he fell to his death. I turned around and sent a prayer to Malek for Dylan and his family before continuing onward. Then at long last, I reached the end and stepped onto solid ground again.
I was congratulated by the other cadets who made it across and I gave my name to the rider collecting names. Rhiannon was now crossing the Parapet and she was doing well. My eyes then went to Violet and some idiot decided to attack her.
Violet got out of the way and hurriedly stepped onto the Parapet. Like those before her, she held her arms out and she began her crossing. She was talking to herself too.
A calming and focus technique no doubt smart I thought
A crack of thunder was heard and the wind slammed into Violet. However, she didn't lose her footing and she resumed crossing. The idiot who made a lunge at her was behind Violet and I took an immediate dislike to him. The jackass then casually threw another cadet off of the Parapet. Violet sped up and she suddenly lost her footing.
"Come on Violet get up!" I shouted.
The former scribe pulled herself back onto the Parapet and soon she was hauling ass with the asshole taunting her. But she defied the odds and made it off.
"God damn Violet that was awesome!" I praised her as I clapped her on the back.
"Thanks it's good to know I have some support over here"
"Hey!"
Both Violet and I glared at the asshole who was close to getting off of the Parapet.
"What jackass?"
"Stay out of this bitch this is between me and Sorrengali"
Violet then surprised me by positioning her dagger mighty close to him. Don't ask me where, please.
"You can't attack me," Violet told this jerk. She recited something from the Codex but the asshole interrupted.
"I don't give a shit!"
"Name?" the rider demanded tired of this idiot's bullshit.
"Jack Barlowe"
A male rider then reminded Jack that Violet was right. If he wanted to kill someone it had to be in the sparring ring or Violet could just kill him now. Violet thought for a moment before asking Jack if he was going to follow the rules. Seeing he was defeated Jack glared hatefully at Violet and me.
Violet lowered her dagger but watched Jack step into the courtyard.
"You're dead Sorrengali as are you Hawthorne and I'm going to be the one to kill you both" Jack threatened before storming off. At that moment my opinion changed prior about Violet. F**k the Scribe Quadrant, she was made to be a rider.
