Sarah's POV
Life at Basgiath was certainly an interesting one. From the moment we woke up to the moment we went to bed us cadets were always on the move. Violet recovered from her match with Imogen but she had two weeks before sparring matches resumed. Whenever I wasn't busy I would help Rhiannon with training Violet in hand-to-hand.
Well, she would watch us since her arm was still in a sling. Rhi was a good fighter and she kicked my ass in one match.
"Keep the temperaments of each specific breed in mind when you decide which dragons to approach and which to run at Threshing" Professor Kaori explained. We were in his class at the moment.
As an illusionist, he had the ability to project things from his mind to life. He switched the projection of the Green Daggertail we were just looking at into a Red Scorpiontail. On each of the tables we were sitting at we had a projection of the dragons he conjured. Its size was smaller than the actual dragon waiting for its rider.
"Red Scorpiontails like Ghrian here are the quickest to temper so if you offend him you're"
"Lunch" Ridoc answers and everyone in the class laughed.
"Precisely" Kaori agreed. "So what's the best way to approach a Red Scorpiontail?"
"They prefer that you approach from the left and from the front if possible" I replied.
Kaori nodded while Rhi and Violet shot me a look of pride.
"Excellent for this Threshing there are three Red Scorpiontails willing to bond"
The projection of Ghrian changed to another dragon.
"How many dragons are there in total?" Rhi inquired.
"A hundred this year but some might change their minds during Presentation Day in about two months, depending on what they see"
I frowned at hearing this. That was thirty-seven less than last year.
"Will they tell you why they won't bond?"
"No jackass" Jack snapped. "Dragons only talk to their bonded riders, just like they only give their full name to their bonded rider, you should know that by now"
I was about to say something to Barlowe but Professor Kaori sent him a look to knock it off. Some more talk ensued about the wards and whatnot before the image transformed to Sgaeyl. Gods, she was a beautiful dragon. No Blues were up for grabs this year, unfortunately.
"You won't have to worry about how to approach blue dragons since there are none willing to bond this Threshing, but you should be able to recognize Sgaeyl if you see her"
"So you can f**king run" Ridoc pointed out.
I chuckled along with some others.
"She's a Blue Daggertail, the rarest of blues and yes if you see her without her bonded rider, you should definitely find somewhere else to be, ruthless does not begin to describe her, nor does she abide by what we assume to be what the dragons consider law, she even bonded the relative of one of her previous riders, which you all know is typically forbidden, but Sgaeyl does whatever she wants, whenever she wants, in fact, if you see any of the blues don't approach them, just"
"Run" Ridoc added again.
"Run" Professor Kaori agreed. "There are a handful of other blues in active service, but you'll find them all along the Esben Mountains in the east, where the fighting is most intense, they're all intimidating, but Sgaeyl is the most powerful of them all"
Especially with Xaden as her rider, I thought.
"What about the black dragons? There's some here right?"
Barlowe's face lit up in excitement.
"I want one of those"
"Only one black has decided to bond this Threshing, her brother has not"
A gorgeous black dragon replaced Sgaeyl and he was f**king huge. Everyone around us couldn't keep their eyes off the black dragon. I couldn't blame them. He had some scarring but otherwise, he looked fierce. The projection then changed to another black dragon. The female who was up for grabs. She was a tad bit smaller than her brother but not by much.
The only difference between the siblings was her icy blue eyes. Her brother had golden ones like most of the dragons did.
"She's huge" Rhiannon stated not taking her eyes off of the projection. "And is that a clubtail?"
"No a morningstartail which she also shares with her brother, she has the same bludgeoning power of a clubtail, but those spikes will eviscerate a person just as well as a Daggertail"
"Best of both worlds, she looks like a killing machine"
"She can be whenever angered, unlike her brother she tends to be more on the docile side, her last rider died not too long ago"
That made my heart hurt for the black dragoness. After all a dragon without its rider is a tragedy and a rider without their dragon is dead.
"She and her brother haven't been seen in the last five years so these images are more than a little outdated, but since we have them here what can you tell me about black dragons"
"They're the darkest and most discerning" Aurelie answered.
"They're the rarest" Violet chimed in. "There hasn't been any born in that last century"
"Correct" Kaori confirmed. "They're also the most cunning, there's no such thing as outsmarting a black dragon, both siblings are a little over a hundred, which makes them middle-aged, their revered as battle dragons of their kind, and if not for them we probably would have lost during the Tyrrish rebellion, add to it that their both morningstartail's, two of the deadliest dragons in history"
"Do the two of them share a close bond?"
I was curious about what the relationship between these two blacks was like. Kaori turned to me.
"They do, in fact, they are twins"
Now that was interesting because not a lot of dragons hatched at the same time.
"The male is a few seconds older than his sister, but nonetheless they both are affectionate as siblings are and bicker as well when something doesn't go their way"
It was then revealed the black male's rider died trying to revive a fallen rider. Class then ended and Violet said she would catch up with us.
"You okay Sarah? You looked a little sad in there"
"I'm fine I just felt bad for those blacks that's all"
"Shit I felt it too, and don't think I didn't notice the same way you were staring at the female, maybe that's a sign she might be yours"
"Unlikely but you never know"
I wasn't going to deny I felt a connection to the black dragoness. Her blue eyes weren't something you'd forget.
"I don't see Jackass bonding with either of them, to be honest"
"I sure as hell hope not those two blacks don't deserve a rider as cruel as Jack" Violet interjected as she rejoined us.
"You would look pretty badass on one of them in all honesty Violet"
The youngest Sorrengali blushed and Rhi laughed.
