Sarah's POV
Today was finally Threshing and I was beyond excited.
"Easy Sarah, your excitement is rubbing off on me" Rhi teased elbowing my side.
"Sorry but I've been waiting for this day for a f**king long time" I confessed. Rhiannon laughed and Violet patted me on the back just as Professor Kaori spoke out.
"Remember to listen here, if a dragon has already selected you, they'll be calling, so pay attention to not just your surroundings but your feelings and go with them, and if your feelings are telling you to go in the opposite direction listen to that too"
"Which one are you going for?" Rhiannon asked me and Violet.
"No clue" I admitted. This year's choices were all good but I respected the choice each dragon made when deciding a rider.
Violet said she didn't feel a connection to any of them while Rhi said the green from Presentation that messed with Violet was a choice. Close by Jack f**king Barlowe made a gesture that made me and Violet flip him off.
I had my sword and sai's with me along with some daggers I won from challenges. Kaori made some more words of wisdom before it was finally time to go dragon hunting. I gave Rhiannon, Violet, and Ridoc pats on the back for good luck before taking a breath and then I ventured into the forest to find my dragon.
An Hour And A Half Later.
I crossed paths with some reds, greens, and even a few oranges. But the pull that a rider was supposed to feel towards their dragon wasn't there with any of them. I did see some dragons taking flight with a new rider on their backs and my heart ached.
What if I wasn't chosen this Threshing like Sawyer?
Don't think like that I thought to myself before I continued on my way. My mouth was parched and I chose to stop beside a rock to take a quick break. I took the canteen that was given to cadets and took a much-needed drink of water from it. The cool liquid tasted heavenly after being around the smell of sulfur and ash.
"Hello Blade Warrior" a feminine voice spoke out and I jumped out of my skin.
The canteen fell to the ground and I drew my sword out to see who or what spooked me. My eyes went wide as saucers as the black dragon landed on the ground a few feet ahead of me. Like our last encounter, the ground shook after her landing.
Again the same voice spoke in my mind.
"You were so thirsty you didn't feel or hear the wind pick up upon my arrival"
Amusement filled her tone. Wait a second if she was talking to me that meant.
"Holy shit"
"Holy shit indeed" the black dragon chuckled. She was choosing me!
"I chose you at Presentation, Sarah Hawthorne"
"Holy crap you can hear my thoughts too"
"Something you will adjust to in time Blade Warrior"
She walked forward until she was directly in front of me and she was huge. I placed a hand on her snout and stroked it.
"That feels nice I've had an itch on there for days, now come"
It was time to fly and after securing my canteen I climbed the dragon's massive right leg and then seated myself where a rider needed to be on a dragon. Next, I bent my knees as Kaori instructed before grabbing hold of what was called a dragon's pommel.
"Hold on Blade Warrior" my dragon warned me before she leaped into the sky. Words couldn't describe what it was like to be on the back of a dragon, let alone of a black one.
"My name is Ylleryth, daughter of Murtcuideam and Fiaclanfuil descended from the Dubhmadinn line, and twin to my unbonded brother, still in shock that I chose you?"
"Yeah I thought you would want someone else"
Ylleryth snorted at that.
"No one else was deemed worthy in my eyes except for you, I feel your kind heart and fiery spirit as a warrior, that is what I wish in my rider"
"Then I'm honored you chose me, crap can you feel my knees?"
"I can feel you, Blade Warrior"
Ylleryth then suddenly turned her body into a nosedive and every swear word left my lips. Then the dragoness repositioned herself and we were flying vertically again.
"You know you have beautiful eyes"
"Thank you, most dragons have gold ones but I was an exception, at least I can be told apart from my brother and Codagh"
As we flew I saw other dragons with new riders on their backs.
"We are almost to the fields Blade Warrior Ylleryth notified me and soon many dragons roared at seeing Ylleryth flying above them. Then the black dragoness made her descent and the ground shook as she landed.
"Your certainly the center of attention" I teased.
Ylleryth chuckled and she lowered herself so I could get off of her back without any difficulty. Everyone who wasn't a dragon wouldn't stop staring at her. I even saw my parents and they were stunned. Ylleryth and I had to wait awhile to get to the roll-keeper but eventually, it was my turn.
The roll-keeper waved at me to approach and I did.
"Sarah Hawthorne, congratulations for the record please tell me the name of the dragon who chose you"
"Ylleryth"
"It's good to see her again"
Ylleryth snorted at that comment. I thanked the record keeper before returning to my dragon.
"I have not been hiding in the Vale all the time, these humans need to pay more attention"
I didn't leave Ylleryth for the rest of the day since Threshing was still going on. Then an hour or so later Ylleryth suddenly snaked her head towards the sky and my gaze followed hers. Dragons roared as another black dragon was approaching and it was Ylleryth's brother!
On his back was none other than Violet and with them was the golden feathertail.
"Well I'll be damned it seemed he decided to bond after all" Ylleryth said in surprise.
Her twin landed as did the feathertail. Violet dismounted from the black male and got in line for the record keeper. Ylleryth chose that moment to approach her brother and she nipped him playfully on his neck. In turn, her brother did the same and the two siblings then pressed their snouts against the other.
The black male then turned his gaze onto me. I wasn't going to lie his eyes were intimidating and Ylleryth growled at her twin to knock it off before she returned to me.
"Do not fret he approves of you Blade Warrior"
Violet didn't get close to the roll-keeper until dusk and everyone was staring at her and her dragon. Then the youngest Sorrengali announced his name.
"Tairneanach"
"Her pronunciation could use some work, he suggested Tairn for short"
Violet then shot the golden feathertail a shocked look. The roll-keeper asked if she needed a mender.
"And Andaranarrum," Violet told the roll-keeper.
Holy shit!
Violet had two dragons!
And then all hell broke loose.
