Chapter 10
"Morning…" Maura stretched like a graceful cat as Jane woke her up.
"Morning…" Jane kissed her, sitting in bed.
"Where are you going this early?"
"Take a shower, and then going to pick up my ensemble and get ready. You can enjoy a bit longer in bed, I am sure my mother and your mother will be badgering you to help you get ready. I will ask Frankie, Tommy and Nina to make sure the caterers focus on the main house, and nobody wanders to see or hear from you, okay?"
"Okay… And you are not going to tell me anything about your ensemble?"
"No… You will see it soon enough…" Jane kissed Maura before escaping to the shower, knowing that if she stayed, she would end up back in bed and late.
Maura chuckled, enjoying her last minutes in bed lazily. Jane kissed her once more after leaving the shower, and being ready to leave.
"I will see you in three hours."
Jane walked in the main house, where suits and dresses were all in hangers all over the place.
"Good morning, everyone!"
"Where are you going this early?"
"I am on my way to get ready. I will drive back by the time of the wedding. Frankie, Tommy, Nina: can you please get the caterers and keep them away from Maura – and be careful not to say her name, just in case?"
"Of course, Jane."
"Everything for brunch will be setup on this side of the house, so it should be okay. They will also prepare the patio for us before they leave."
"You got it."
"And we will help your bride get ready." Constance offered, looking at Angela by her side.
"Please make sure she does not get cold feet and decide to run away!" Jane teased.
"Don't worry, she is not going anywhere without you." Constance reinforced, knowingly.
Jane drove out satisfied, since all was going smoothly.
The tailor had everything ready for her, and his partner showed up to help her set her hair and do a very light makeup.
They did it without any hurry, and by the time she was ready, it was time to drive back. Jane was happily anxious.
Meanwhile, in the house, Nina had easily guided the caterers, who were quick and efficient in setting up for the party.
Constance and Angela knocked on the door of the guesthouse, finding Maura just out of the shower, in a comfortable robe, blow drying her hair.
Her dress was now hanging (she had hanged it as soon as Jane had left), and Constance and Angela were impressed on how beautiful it looked, and couldn't wait to see how it would look on Maura.
"I thought you would like to keep to the tradition of wearing something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a sixpence on your shoe…" Constance offered, looking lovingly at her daughter, with a little satchel bag on her hands.
"Oh, what do you have in mind, mother?" Maura asked, curiously.
"I think the something new is, without saying, your wonderful wedding gown. For the something old, I got an actual sixpence coin for you to place inside of your shoe – so that covers the old and the sixpence. For something borrowed, I brought this thin golden tiara – I wore it on my wedding day and I would borrow it to you."
"And for something blue, I have your garters." Angela added, producing flat baby blue garters.
"As far as superstitions go, I am covered!" Maura laughed. "Thank you, both of you. This means a lot to me…"
Constance and Angela helped Maura to get ready. Her dress was so simple, but so wonderfully done… It featured a flowing skirt from the empire waist, the top very feminine halter-style adorned with meticulous micro-pleats to form a deep V neckline emphasizing the low cut décolleté.
They helped Maura into the dress, after helping her finalize her hair and make-up, her added on items, and her shoes and jewelry.
Maura stood in the middle of them both, and both her mothers had tears in her eyes.
"You look absolutely stunning, Maura."
"Breathtaking. Jane is a very lucky woman." Angela praised.
"I am the lucky one, Angela." Maura smiled warmly at her.
They walked back to the main house to finish their own final touches on the preparation, leaving Maura alone for a few minutes, the little bouquet of simple white flowers by Maura's hand.
All of them went to the patio when Frankie confirmed Jane had just texted him that she was parking outside.
Jane entered, and all the family was wowed by how incredible she looked. The off-white tuxedo that took full advantage of her tall and lean constitution, the pearly low-cut blouse valuing her chest line, and the contrast with her dark hair loose on her shoulders, she was really a top model walking the catwalk.
Tommy and Frankie whistled and catcalled, and from inside the guesthouse Maura was burning with curiosity to see what Jane had done to provoke that reaction.
She didn't have to wait long. After everyone had settled, Arthur walked the patio, and knocked on the guesthouse door, before opening it and standing for a moment observing the beauty that was her adoptive daughter.
"You look gorgeous…" he whispered, kissing her forehead gently, and offering her his arm, that she accepted, and walking her outside.
She blushed to the collective 'Awww' reaction. Maura looked like a dream picture. Her regal features, her simple but elegant dress, her perfect form. Jane drank into the vision of her already-wife-soon-to-be-again-wife. And she felt like the luckiest woman alive, tears prickling the back of her eyes, sure that in the best way possible Maura's wedding fantasy was getting realized.
Maura's eyes were glued at Jane. She always thought Jane was gorgeous, the most gorgeous woman Maura had ever rested eyes on. But today Maura was sure Jane looked better than anyone Maura had ever seen before. Maura felt tears welling in her eyes, and her heart swelling with love. It felt good to be alive.
Nina, on cue, started playing the wedding march performed by a cello – Jane had suggested it, since she knew Maura loved the cello, and they had timed it to be only a little section, given the patio was just a short walk.
Tommy motioned TJ to move first, with the little pillow holding the wedding rings. Nina and Frankie were taking pictures, and Tommy joined them.
Arthur walked the few steps that separated them from Jane. Jane had positioned herself on the border of the patio with the beach. The caterers had arranged the tables in the patio, so the family was relaxed seating and had a perfect view of the lovely couple.
Arthur unhooked Maura's arm from his, kissing her hand lovingly, and placing it on Jane's hand, before moving to sit with Constance.
For a long moment, Jane and Maura were lost taking in each other's image. It was a memory they would cherish and that would never fade from their retina's.
When the march paused, Jane took Maura's hand and turned to face their family.
"Thank you for joining us today. We know this is far from traditional. But if you've met us, you know we are both far from traditional." She smiled confidently, and their family chuckled, and Maura smiled.
"We've been wedded, on paper, since Wednesday. But, for us, being wedded is only meaningful if you, our loving family, is with us. And that is why we are all here today."
"For reasons you all know well, we will not have a priest, or someone to celebrate. But we will exchange our vows with you as our witnesses."
She paused, and turned to face Maura, who picked Jane's ring from the little pillow TJ had brought up, and taking Jane's hand in hers began her vows.
"I love you, Jane, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out. I love you for putting your hand into my heart, and overlooking all my foolishness, weaknesses, and awkwardness, and for drawing out into the light all the beautiful belongings that no one else had looked quite far enough to find. I love you because you have done more than any creed could have done to make me good, and more than any fate to make me happy. I love you for saving me and giving me my life back more times than I could count. You make me laugh. You make me think. You make me whole. But, above everything, you make me outrageously happy…" Maura slipped the ring into Jane's finger, and kissed it gently before continuing. "I, Maura Dorothea Isles, take you, Jane Clementine Rizzoli, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish for as long as we both shall live."
Jane had a soft expression in her face, looking lovingly at Maura, who was smiling and crying at the same time. Before proceeding with her own vows, Jane used her handkerchief to gently dry Maura's tears.
She then picked Maura's ring from the little pillow, and took Maura's hand into hers, and cleared her throat before beginning her vows.
"They say we don't marry one person; we marry three: the person we think that they are, the person they are, and the person they are going to become as a result of being married to us. So in that sense, we are not that different from all other wedded people."
Maura chuckled among her tears, and everyone chuckled as well, before Jane continued.
"I vow to always put you first, even during baseball season. I promise to never keep score, even when I am clearly winning, or when I am clearly right." Jane had a huge smile on her face, and Maura was mirroring it.
"I take you as mine, knowing and loving all of your strengths and faults, just as I offer myself to you as yours with all of my strengths and faults. I will be there for you in your times of need, I promise to be there to catch you if you should stumble, carry you over every threshold, and fall in love with you every day."
"'There is no remedy for love', says Thoreau, 'but to love more'. Today and forever, I will follow his advice and seek my remedy in your arms – who better to deliver this remedy than a doctor?"
"Today I join my life to yours, not simply as your wife, but as your best friend, your lover, and your biggest supporter. Let me always be the shoulder you lean on and the companion of your life. With this ring…" And Jane used this moment to slip the ring on Maura's finger. "I promise you that you will never have to face the world alone."
"I, Jane Clementine Rizzoli, take you, Maura Dorothea Isles, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish for as long as both shall live."
