A young raven-haired child was sitting under a tree reading a book. Her golden eyes followed the lines on the page as a gentle breeze caressed her hair. Little Blake Belladonna was a rather astute child that loved literature.
Even when she started to learn to speak her gestures of grabbing a book or palming one with cute cries of 'book…book' indicated a defining trait of the girl.
She had always loved books, which bloomed throughout the years. Now that she went to school, she had finally learned to read them for herself. It had proven difficult at first, so many unfamiliar and difficult words, but as time went on it became easier and easier the more, she read.
Over the course of the years the simple books had fallen under her mastery. She loved reading works of fantasy most especially and while the far more complex works were out of her reach, she was content with works one wouldn't expect a child to access until a few years older would engage in.
"That's a rather large book. You love to read huh?" A voice said from next to her and made Blake jump. She didn't notice someone approaching, she was too concentrated on the words before her.
The speaker was that of a young boy around her age. He had sun kissed blond hair and bright yet warm blue eyes. He had a really warm smile as well.
"Wow? Have you really read through all that?" he asked with a curious gaze.
Recovering from her shock she shyly answered, "No. I have read only a few of the tales in the beginning."
"Oh! That's cool! My friend Ruby loves fairy tales. She always insists that her sister Yang or myself read them to her. They really seem to like 'Goldilocks and the three bears'! and 'Red Riding Hood!' but I really don't have one that sticks out to me. What about you?" He confidently and warmly beamed down at the girl.
"'Beauty and the beast'." Blake mumbled her answer.
The blond held out his hand. "I'm Naruto. Naruto Uzumaki."
Blake looked at the hand for a moment before gingerly taking it. It was a fair bit bigger than hers and warm and soft. It felt nice.
'Naruto?' That was an unusual name. Was he from another kingdom and moved here recently? Or was he just visiting. She couldn't place any familiar accents to his name.
"Blake."
"Nice to meet you, Blake." He gave a small smile before gazing up at the top of her head.
"Your ears are really cute."
Said ears flattened at the sudden comment. She was caught off guard by the comment and for some reason she was feeling bashful. No one except her parents ever told her that they were cute and that was only after the result of being pointed out or made fun of by human children. Among the Faunus kind they never really pointed out their traits unless it was among their own species making note of strengths that indicated their potential or a weakness to improve. Since Blake was still a child, she wasn't privy to details regarding intimacy or other such things regarding their traits. "My caretaker Ebony is going to be in a meeting and those usually take hours. Do you want to play with me, Blake?" Instantly flittering from one thought.
The faunus looked from the boy to the book in her lap and back to Naruto.
As he watched her it seemed he picked up on her hesitation and shyness. "I…I." She stammered softly.
The blonde then decided to change tactics then sit down instead. "I'm sorry. If you don't want to play maybe you can read the story out loud. I'd love to listen."
Her amber eyes darted back down to the book. The last time she read aloud was when her mother was helping her learn how to read.
For a moment Blake hesitated, still a bit nervous, but after taking a calming read, she began to read.
As she started to read out loud Blake stuttered and stumbled over the words. She felt nervous having an audience, but the warm smile never left the face of the blond. He listened attentively as she could to read and when she paused upon making mistakes, he just encouraged her.
"There you are, I see you made a new friend." Approaching them was a tall and tan skinned woman with Ram horns. "I'm afraid we have to go now."
The faunus was surprised to find herself disappointed that her companion had to go. She had really enjoyed their time together and would like to spend more time with him, maybe becoming friends.
"I have to go Blake, but I should be back tomorrow. I'll See you then ok."
Blake shyly waved goodbye and to her surprise found herself looking forward to tomorrow.

The park was bathed in warm sunlight, casting dappled shadows across the playground. Children laughed and played on swings and slides, their joyful voices filling the air. In the midst of it all, Blake Belladonna sat on a park bench, her golden eyes scanning the area with a mix of hope and disappointment.
The day before, she had met a boy named Naruto Uzumaki, a kid about her age who had appeared out of nowhere with an infectious warm smile. It had felt like hours passed that they talked, and Blake mostly read. Naruto had promised to meet her again at the park today.
She kept glancing at the entrance, her cat ears twitching with anticipation.
"He said he'd be here... He promised." She whispered to herself.
Time passed, and the sun moved lazily across the sky. Other children came and went, playing with their friends, but Naruto was nowhere to be seen. Blake's hope began to wane, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment.
A voice suddenly called out from behind her, breaking her reverie.
" Hey there, Blake!"
Blake turned around, her amber eyes widening in surprise and joy. There stood Naruto Uzumaki, just as he had promised, with his bright blue eyes and a grin that could rival the sun. He was holding a colorful popsicle in each hand.
" Naruto! You came!" she softly beamed.
Naruto handed her one of the popsicles, the vibrant red and orange colors matching his shirt.
"Of course!" He grinned. " I wouldn't miss it. What's a promise if you don't keep it, right?
Blake accepted the popsicle with a nod and took a cautious bite, savoring the sweet and tangy flavors.
"Right." She found herself letting out a small giggle. She couldn't help it, the small thrill of delight coursed through her. "Promises are important."
They sat on the bench together, enjoying their popsicles and watching the other children play. Blake's disappointment had faded into the background, replaced by the happiness of seeing her new friend again.
"So, Blake, did you read any more stories from the book?"
Slowly but surely, Blake began opening up to the blond. Day by day Blake found herself adjusting and opening up to the blond.
Soon it came to a point where they can happily chat and laugh. Two young souls, brought together by fate, enjoying a sunny day at the park.
And in that moment, Blake Belladonna knew that promises made with a smile were promises worth keeping.
