Harley Quinn is Nana. It goes about as well as you expect for the mafia, LOL.

Her heart was breaking...no, it had broken a long time ago. She always knew Waller was an absolute bitch, but this took the cake. Worse had been his reaction to the news.

Joker had been horrifyingly dismissive of the fact she had a miscarriage due to the last mission Waller had sent her on. Sure, he had broken her out of prison shortly after, but he was the reason she had gotten arrested in the first place!

Joker's cruel and callous remarks about how she was 'too weak' if she had lost their child from such an 'easy mission' had been the last straw. She was done.

Done with Gotham, done with Joker's weird relationship with the fucking Batman, done with Waller's little Suicide Squad.

If she was caught, they'd just send her back to Arkham or another prison and the cycle would just repeat again and again.

However...she had heard credible rumors that a very special information broker was in town. One that was merely passing through, but could help her with her issue.

"So...what does the infamous Harley Quinn want with me? I'll tell you right now, I'm not getting involved with that psycho Joker."

"I want a clean break," said Harley. "And the Joker can go screw himself for all I care. I'm tired of being jerked around by him and that bitch Waller."

The broker paused.

"What sort of 'break'?" asked the Broker.

"Harley Quinn needs to disappear in such a way that people won't find her unless she wants to be found," said Harley. Unnoticed her eyes began to glow from an inner light. "I want to have a real life, far from this nonsense and I want to make sure the capes can't lead anyone to me later."

"Sensible," said the broker. "A complete break is going to cost you. And it won't be cheap."

"I didn't expect it to be," said Harley.

The price made her wince, but considering this was her best shot at a real life, she wouldn't hesitate. She was sure Bats was real curious about what she was up to, selling most of her weapons and insuring her babies were sent somewhere safe. She would never forgive herself if her pet hyenas were sent somewhere bad.

The broker, Viper was very thorough in their job. Harley could feel their powers working on her. It wasn't enough to simply relocate her to another country under a new name.

Her entire persona had to go to, so the capes had a harder time tracking her down.

Bit by bit, she felt "Harley" being placed in a box locked with mental chains. Once her personality as Harley was secured, Viper went to work on her original personality as Harleen Quinzel.

She had to cut ties with everything that involved her past, even if it meant she had to go completely no contact with her sister and what little was left of her family. It would hurt, but she had to do this if she ever wanted to be free of this pain.

When Viper was done, the woman before her was a shell of the person she used to be. An almost blank slate with a ticking time bomb that lay lurking below the surface.

Locking Harley away was the hard part. What came after was child's play compared to that. It took them little over a week to set her up as a waitress in some no-name diner with a new identity and backstory in Japan.

Six years later...

Nana looked at the ingredients for dinner and frowned. If she had known her husband would be bringing over such an important guest, she would have bought groceries beforehand.

As it was she would have to make a quick trip to the store to stock up for dinner.

"Darling, I'm heading out to the store to pick up a few things!" Nana called out.

She was gone for only fifteen minutes. She originally planned to stay out longer, but her motherly instincts began screaming in warning.

When she arrived home, having rushed as fast as she could without knowing why, she came across a scene that made her blood boil with rage.

She didn't know what that orange flame-like power was, but she knew it was bad news. Especially if they were planning to use it on her daughter.

Iemitsu and the old fool he brought with him never saw her frying pan.

Nana checked on her baby. Nozomi looked scared, but not of her mother. She was clutching Nana's leg rather tightly.

Nana carefully placed the pan down. She had hit them hard enough that they weren't getting up anytime soon.

She made a few phone calls, and once her baby was secure with a trusted party, she went to work. Nana's eyes gleamed from an internal light as she called the ambulance to the house.

As far as the hospital needed to know, her husband's boss had slipped and fallen on the stairs and crashed into her husband, who then proceeded to hit his head rather hard against the wall.

Considering the other man's advanced age, they were there very quickly.

Seeing her 'husband' in the bed, Nana was fuming. She did very well to hide that though.

The heart monitor alerted her to when he started to wake up. Nana had already gotten the story straight in her head, and if someone had looked at her at that moment, they would have noted how her eyes glowed an almost indigo blue light.

"Darling, are you alright? Your boss took quite the tumble down the stairs!" said Nana.

If anyone had been in the room besides them, they would have noticed the hypnotic tone her voice took.

"A tumble?" he repeated, dazed. The concussion she had given him had temporarily short circuited his memory, leaving small gaps.

"Don't you remember?" she said, not letting up on the ruse she had created.

Iemitsu was so dazed from the concussion that he didn't think to question his wife's story. Nana had made sure to swipe some high level drugs that she slipped into the older man's IV when no one was looking.

She didn't even think to question how she knew how to do such a thing or knew what drugs to steal. All she knew was that the old man was going to have one very bad trip if she had any say about it. Whether he lived or died was up to her mood.

Either way he wasn't going anywhere near her baby again.

When Iemitsu left, Nana felt a small relief. It was tiring, holding up that 'good little wife' persona.

Perhaps it was the threat to her baby, but some of her old instincts came pouring back. The memories were still firmly locked away, but Nana knew what she had to do to protect her child.

Like hell was she going to allow Iemitsu to do as he pleased with her baby's future. But first, she had a few things to take care of like establishing some real security around her home. If they came again, she wanted to be certain Iemitsu had a much harder time of harming her girl.

"Nozomi, how would you like to have a puppy?" said Nana.

Nozomi's eyes lit up, exactly as Nana knew they would at the thought of a puppy. No child could resist baby animals.

Nana couldn't help but feel pure relief at seeing the little shrike her daughter had inadvertently brought home. In her defense, she had mostly forgotten that hyenas technically weren't classed as 'domestic' pets.

She would be the first to admit she liked the vicious little brat that was Hibari Kyouya. The kid didn't give one iota of damn who knew he was the one responsible for beating the shit out of anyone who annoyed him, and took great pride in his fighting skills. The only reason he had followed her little girl home was because she had been walking her hyena pup and he wanted to be sure that the girl or her family had the right permits for an 'exotic' animal.

On the plus side, if she did this right then her daughter would never inherit her crappy taste in men. Besides, this boy was adorably violent and would likely keep up with her baby when it came to causing all sorts of mayhem.

Hibari soon became a frequent visitor to the Sawada household after Nana 'encouraged' her daughter to properly "play" with him.

It was the first time he had encountered anyone his age that actually fought back close to his level and didn't run away screaming.

Besides...Nana made a mean hamburger steak and he wasn't about to pass up free food that good. He was a growing boy after all.

Two years later...

Nana was more surprised that it took this long for someone to take notice of the fact that her little girl and Kyouya were getting close.

The Hibari clan were perfectly accepting of the fact that the two were swiftly becoming a very cute (if extremely violent) couple. In fact they were all for it since it meant less work down the road in acquiring a suitable wife.

Nozomi took to the lessons they had privately arranged (with Nana's permission and approval, of course) to help her hide better in plain sight. On the surface she was a proper lady, at least by Japanese standards. Nozomi rather liked the lessons on how to cook, sew and flower arranging, though she found the etiquette lessons dead boring.

Even better no one said a word about her 'pet dog', since it was so well behaved...provided one didn't piss Nozomi off. One idiot yakuza found that out the hard way, and her pet Fujiko had nearly ripped his throat out before Nozomi called her off.

Either way, none of the local yakuza in town ever made that mistake twice.

Nana looked at the odd man with the red pacifier with some wariness. Despite the fact he looked like a toddler, her every instinct warned her this man was dangerous. It was a bit odd how closely he resembled Kyouya though. They could almost pass for twins.

"What are your intentions for Kyouya?" he asked bluntly. Though he did so in a rather polite tone, considering.

"I want to make sure my daughter doesn't inherit my rather poor taste in men," said Nana without hesitation. "That, and the little shrike is one of the few people who wouldn't run away screaming when she goes all out on idiots."

Fon blinked, surprised at the response.

"What's a shrike?"

Nana's smile was all teeth. When Kyouya had first heard what her private nickname for him was, he had been just as confused...right up until he looked up what it was. Then he had preened for weeks at the comparison.

She went to a nearby bookshelf and handed him a book on birds. The page in question was bookmarked. Fon humored her before he realized what she had actually compared his grandson to. He almost wanted to facepalm, because of course Kyouya would be smug about the nickname. He would find it amusing someone was comparing him to what appeared to be a small, unassuming bird at first glance...only for it to impale it's enemies and eat them at their leisure later.

Still, from what he could tell the mother had no ill intentions for his grandson...and while Kyouya wouldn't admit it yet, he was rather fond of the girl.

There was only one way to properly handle this, in his opinion.

Nozomi came home later with a list of martial arts styles that suited her body type and a suggested diet plan to maximize her potential later. If she wanted to be Kyouya's future partner, then Fon wanted to see her put some actual effort in keeping up with him later.

Fon was rather pleased when he returned a few months later and found her enthusiastically trying to cave his grandson's head in using some of the styles he had recommended. Kyouya certainly had no complaints.

Though you could imagine the shock Fon had when he saw Nozomi trying to brain Kyouya's head in with a baseball bat covered in vibrant orange flames that put Luce's to shame. Only for Kyouya to respond in kind with deep purple/indigo fire of his own.

It seemed he would have to step in before the Vindice did, for their sake.

(Nana took the news of flames...and the underworld...in stride. Fon was a little less shocked at seeing her with deep indigo/violet flames of her own, though the violet seemed a bit weaker.)

Whatever passing interest Fon had in Nozomi as his possible future granddaughter had been replaced with the desire to insure his grandson's Sky was properly trained. He was rather tired of seeing Skies that made their Elements do all the fighting for them. Nevermind that Nozomi was the absolute opposite of a damsel in distress.

Well...that and it was rather gratifying to see someone using the obscure martial arts he had collected over the years correctly to kick someone's teeth in. It was so nice to be appreciated for something he enjoyed teaching.
