This one depicts how I think Professor McGonagall SHOULD have reacted when she learned that Hermione had signed up for ALL the elective classes.
Professor McGonagall was sitting in her office looking through the sign-up sheets for elective classes that the second year students had filled out as Hogwarts students started electives in third year.
But, when McGonagall got to Hermione Granger's file, she spotted an obvious and glaring problem; the girl had signed up for EVERYTHING.
This was an issue to settle right away and not let fester.
McGonagall therefore picked up her purple megaphone and shouted into it "HERMIONE GRANGER PLEASE SEE ME IN MY OFFICE AT ONCE."
Hermione, who was lying on her bed reading through The Standard Book of Spells grade 2 for the nine hundred octillion to the nine hundred octillionth power time while Parvati and Lavender were taking a break for studying and reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for the first time, both having already read The Magician's Nephew the Previous Year, was stunned.
"What have I done?" thought Hermione to herself as she took the walk to McGonagall's office.
"Come in," said McGonagall sharply when Hermione reached the door.
Hermione entered and McGonagall got to the point at once.
"So," said McGonagall bluntly, "We have a problem. That problem is your class schedule for next year. You have signed up for everything. This is actually an impossible schedule seeing as some classes are held at the same time."
"That can easily be worked around," replied Hermione with an air of superiority to her voice, "You could get me a Time Turner. I read about-"
"No," said McGonagall firmly, "Time Turners are exceedingly dangerous and I cannot put a Time Turner in the hands of a thirteen year old girl."
"But, Professor McGonagall, you know I'm responsible-"
"Miss Granger there are dangers associated with meddling with time of which tweens and teens can have no idea. if something were to go wrong, the temporal vortex that could be created-"
McGonagall shuddered. There was a reason students weren't allowed to have Time Turners.
Tragic and disturbing fates had met ADULT witches and wizards who had messed around with time.
Time wasn't a toy. You didn't play with it. Messing around with time was asking for a disaster to happen.
And to entrust a thirteen year old girl with a Time Turner? No. Just. No.
"Please trust me-" began Hermione in a begging voice but McGonagall cut her off.
"Even most adults have no grasp of how dangerous playing around time really is," insisted McGonagall in a crisp clear voice. If I approve a Time Turner for your use, I'd putting all of the students and staff in danger. You could easily do something stupid with the Time Turner and it not even be your fault. Heck, you could easily do something stupid with the Time Turner without even knowing you were doing it. "
"I'm not careless, " protested Hermione.
"That's the point, you don't have to be for time to be an extremely dangerous thing, " said McGonagall matter of factly, "At any rate, I cannot allow you take such a full schedule even in and of itself. You simply cannot handle that much strain. Trying to do too much will strain you both physically and mentally. You'll suffer from physical fatigue and weariness and mental burnout."
"I'll never get burnt out on learning, " insisted Hermione, "Besides, a key point for me is not wasting time. As we speak, Harry and Ron are wasting time in the common room playing Connect Four and Parvati and Lavender are wasting time in the dorm reading The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe instead of reading academic books like they should be."
"You could learn a lot from your friends and roommates, " McGonagall told Hermione to her surprise, "Sometimes, you need to take a break from studying and just enjoy something. Life isn't just about academics. Playing board games and reading classic fantasy novels are fantastic ways of relaxing and taking a much needed break from the everyday academic life."
Hermione looked stunned. McGonagall took advantage of her silence to say, "No, Miss Granger, you may not have a Time Turner. You need to drop two classes."
Realizing she was defeated, Hermione said, "I'll drop Muggle Studies. I don't need that subject, being muggle born and being raised by muggles. "
"Good choice, " said McGonagall approvingly, "I suggest you drop Divination as your second choice. Seers are born, not made. If you don't have gift, the class won't help you. If you do, you don't need the class for it come out."
Oka, then, " sighed Hermione sadly.
"You may be sad now, but I hope you'll realize as time wears on that a normal schedule and a normal workload will be better for you."
