It was the night of Friday, October 16th, 1993, and Lavender Brown lay awake in her bed.

She was a grieving girl who had just learned that morning that the previous night, her beloved pet bunny Binky had been killed by a fox.

Three of her roommates were asleep and the fourth hadn't come up to bed yet.

Hermione Granger was still in the library getting her vast amount of homework done.

Lavender lay sadly awake for awhile and didn't know how much time had passed when she finally heard Hermione enter the dorm.

Lavender instinctively sat up when she heard Hermione's footsteps.

As Hermione entered the dormitory, she saw that Lavender was awake.

To Lavender's surprise, when Hermione saw that Lavender was awake and alert, she approached her.

"Lavender?" asked Hermione quietly, "May I please have a word?"

"Sure," answered Lavender, who didn't suspect anything amiss.

"Follow me to the common room, " Hermione told Lavender, "It's empty now as everyone else has gone to bed."

Lavender followed Hermione down the girls' staircase and into the common room.

The two girls took armchairs by the fire and Hermione looked Lavender eye to eye.

"Lavender, " said Hermione seriously, "Look, I was horribly insensitive towards you and your feelings today. I went on about this logical explanation and I didn't show you any sympathy or sensitively for the loss of your bunny or your feelings about it. I would like to take this moment to apologize to you for the insensitivity I displayed towards you today."

Lavender had a very surprised look come across her face but she grabbed onto Hermione's left hand with her right hand and said, "Hermione, I accept your apology. You may not have acted the best in this situation, but it's not like you laughed in my face about it or anything like that."

"Lavender, I should have been more respectful of your feelings. It just wasn't the time for a long winded blabbing of logic and reasoning. It was time to understand that a classmate had suffered a loss and to be respectful of her feelings. I know we aren't friends, let alone Besties, but we're still classmates and roommates in the same year and I should have been more sensitive to your plight, " acknowledged Hermione, "I'm really sorry for not being more sensitive to and respectful of your loss and your feelings for it."

"Nobody's perfect, Hermione, " said Lavender calmly, "I appreciate you admitting that the way acted was wrong and owning up to it. You're going to make some mistakes if you're a human being. Being able to realize that you were wrong and own up to your mistakes is a sign of a high quality person."

"Thank you for listening to me and accepting my apology, Lavender, " said Hermione gratefully, "Would you like to be left alone now?"

"Yes, " said Lavender quietly, "But I I'll sleep on the armchair here tonight. I don't want to listen to the other girls snoring tonight."

"A completely peaceful and quiet sleep would be best for you tonight, " added Hermione softly.

Hermione rose from her armchair and said "Goodnight, Lavender," peacefully.

"Goodnight, Hermione, " returned Lavender as Hermione walked back up the girls' staircase.

And with that, Lavender curled up in her armchair as though she was a cat. Without the other girls snoring to bother her, she was asleep within a few minutes and a few nanoseconds.
