I apologize for the delay in updates. I have been very busy with work the last few weeks and have been exhausted. This piece explores how Hermione SHOULD have approached the situation with regard to her parents before the Horcrux Hunt. Erasing her parents memories was the wrong thing to do and this piece will explore why it was the wrong thing to do.
Hermione Granger was about to go on the most important and the most dangerous mission of her life.
She would soon be joining Harry Potter on a quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes.
Exactly when the Hunt for the Horcruxes would begin was uncertain, but Hermione would stop over at the Burrow first. At the very least she intended to attend Bill's and Fleur's wedding.
Being that her parents were muggles, and it was well known that Lord Voldemort's arch enemy Harry Potter was were longtime best friend, Hermione feared that her parents would be in danger as the Second Wizarding War approached its climax.
Hermione had a plan, but she knew she would have to talk it over with her parents first. It was only right that they got their say in the matter.
So, that morning, as the Grangers sat down to a breakfast of pancakes, sausage patties, and Budweiser, Hermione spoke up.
"Mom, dad, there is something I need to discuss with you both. It's urgent," piped up Hermione.
"Is this about the Wizarding World's war with Lord Voldemort?" asked Dan.
"Yes, dad," said Hermione matter of fact, "You two will be targeted by Voldemort if you stay here. As Voldemort knows I'm Harry Potter's best friend, he will likely suspect us to have lots of information on Harry and he could try to torture you for information. All of us and Harry are in danger from this scenario."
"Do you have any ideas on how to protect us?" inquired Emma.
"Yes, mom," answered Hermione at once, "Here is my plan: I will perform a Memory Charm on both of you to make you forget who you are. I will then magically implant artifical memories into both of you so that you think your names are Wendell and Monica Wilkins and that your life's ambition is to move to Australia. You won't know that you have a daughter. If I survive the war against Voldemort, I'll find you and restore your proper self identifies. If I snuff it, I'll be able to cast a strong enough Charm to keep you both happy. That's my plan."
"NO!" shouted Dan and Emma in unison.
"That's fucking mind rape!" declared Dan indignantly.
"Quite," agreed Emma nodding her head vigorously, "And what happens to our jobs and our bank accounts and our bills as Dan and Emma Granger during all this. "
"Yes,' continued Dan, "We'd get fired for not coming to work for so long and never our jobs back and our health insurance would be terminated for failing to pay our monthly premiums."
"And what about our medical care itself, eye exams, labwork/bloodwork, dental visits, doctor appointments etc.," interjected Emma, "Without our proper knowledge of who we are we'd not be able to access those things and we'd have no clue about our health records and history."
"And how are we supposed to grocery shop or get money to eat out if we don't have access to our bank account because we have no idea who we really are." finished Emma, "Hermione, the answer to this suggestion is NO!"
Hermione took a deep breath. Now that mom and dad had laid out all the flaws with this plan, it was obvious that this plan was a no go.
"I'm sorry mom, dad, " said Hermione apologetically, "I hadn't fully thought out the plan very well. I didn't think of all the issues that could arise from the execution of this plan. I only want to keep you safe during these troubled times. However, after listening to your reasons for rejecting this idea, it's obvious why this was a terrible plan. I'd rather you not stay here and face the potential danger. But, yeah, that plan was shotty and filled with flaws."
"Do you know if Harry's relatives are under any kind of protection?" questioned Dan.
"Remus told me that the Dursleys are placed under the protection of the Order of the Phoenix," explained Hermione, "The Order of the Phoenix has selected a safe location for the Dursleys to go into hiding until such time as Lord Voldemort is defeated. They will drive a little ways and then, since they can't apparate on their own as muggles, members of the Order of the Phoenix will take them by Side Along Apparition to the safe location they will be staying at. The strongest magical protective spells and charms in existence have been placed upon the house they will be staying at, and a few members of the Order of the Phoenix will be assigned to keep watch over the place."
"Would it be possible for us to be given similar protection from this so called Order of the Phoenix?" wondered Dan, "It seems as if Harry's relatives are being offered protection because of fears that they will be targeted. If you explain to someone in this order or whatever it is that you suspect we will be targeted, could we be given this same protection?"
"I assume we would," reasoned Emma, "We could also have it arranged for our monthly bills to be paid, to receive some form of healthcare, and to come up with a plausible non magical explanation for our absence from work."
"I will inquire about whether the Order of the Phoenix can offer you the same protections they are giving the Dursleys," promised Hermione, "I see now what the flaws with my plan were. "
To be continued in a part 2 at later date. Part 2 will show the plan devised to keep Hermione's parents safe as Voldemort's Second Wizarding War heads towards its climax.
