A/N: I had a different piece about a more complex and interesting topic, but I deleted it without posting it after rereading it myself. The execution of the idea had too many flaws and plot holes to post. I'm going to rewrite that piece entirely. This is a short and simple piece where Harry thanks Parvati for sticking up for him in Flying Lesson in first year. In Sorcerer's Stone, after McGonagall arrives someone says, "it wasn't his fault, professor," and McGonagall replies "Be quiet, Miss Patil," confirming the speaker from the previous line to be Parvati.
It was the day after Harry Potter had become the youngest Seeker in a century and the first year Gryffindors were filing into their Charms class.
Harry kept his eyes on the approaching students. He needed to thank one particular student for something she had done for him during Flying Lessons yesterday.
When he saw Parvati Patil enter the classroom with her BFF Lavender Brown, Harry asked Parvati, "Parvati, may I have a quick word before class."
"Sure, why not," said Parvati calmly, not suspecting Harry of being interested in any sensitive or personal topics.
"Parvati," said Harry seriously, looking her eye to eye, "I would just like to take this moment to thank you for sticking up for me to McGonagall in Flying Lessons yesterday when you told her what had happened wasn't my fault."
"No problem, Harry," smiled Parvati, "The whole thing was Malfoy's fault, no ifs, ands, ors, or buts about it. You did the right thing in standing up for Neville and protecting his property. "
"I'm more impressed that you stood up for me than I would have been if you had stood up for Lavender," said Harry warmly, "It takes a great deal of courage to stick up for your friends, but a great deal more to stick up for people you aren't as close with."
"I was doing what I thought was right in sticking up for you," said Parvati gently, "You didn't deserve to get in trouble for defending Neville and protecting his property when the entire thing was Malfoy's fault. Honestly, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if Malfoy had to serve detention with Filch every night for the rest of the semester. "
"I can't help but smirk at the thought of Malfoy having to serve numerous detentions with Filch," grinned Harry, "But, seriously, I just really wanted to take this moment to thank you for vouching for me and sticking up for me. When a classmate you aren't particularly close with does you a favor and/or sticks up for you, that person deserves to be thanked and acknowledged. Things were very hectic after McGonagall pulled me away from the lesson and I didn't get a chance to thank you at the lesson and I was so excited about becoming the youngest Seeker in a century that I forgot about it last night. When I replayed the events that transpired yesterday in my head upon waking up this morning, I remembered that I never thanked you yesterday for sticking up for me. Thank you again, Parvati."
"No problem, Harry," replied Parvati, "And to hell with Draco Malfoy. The worst thing that could ever happen in our year would be if Draco were to become a prefect in our fifth year."
At that nanosecond Professor Flitwick called the class to order and they had to shut up and sit down but Parvati appreciated the acknowledgement and Harry felt a sense of peace at having thanked the person who had stuck up for the previous day.
