Chapter 9 Double Trouble.
The screen shows a black jeep that moves up and down.
The people in the room look confused. They had expected to see a lot of things but a black car was not one of them. What purpose did it have? Because it is so dark it is difficult to see who's car it is. Although most juniors could swear they had seen that car before...
Inside the car are Sue Snell and Tommy Ross are shown having sexual relations. censored.
The people in the room turn to stare at Tommy Ross and Sue Snell and turn back to look at the screen. It takes everybody a few seconds to understand what they are watching. Sue and Tommy both turn a vibrant red, while the parents of young teens close the eyes of their youngs.
"Nice going Sue". Says Tina with a wink. Sue dares too look up and sees her (male) classmates stare with lust and desire to the screen. Just when she thinks it can't be worse, her father starts to whisper something about Tommy, a truck and dynamite. Thanks goodness her mother notices and takes her fathers hand to calm him down.
Tommy leans forward to kiss Sue, but she turns away.
''Ohhhhhh Tommy! I think you're doing something wrong!. Screams Billy Delois.
Some friends and classmates of him laugh about the dirty joke. Before anyone can say or do something, a piece of paper falls right in front of Principal Morton. Everybody is quite in a second.
"What does the note say". Asks Mr Wilson, who at this point is used to the papertrail.
Will you please shut up and behave yourself! You're going to see a lot more things before all of this is over, maybe you would like to be the next to be shown Mr Delois?
Billy Delois and his friends became quiet at the threat of exposure while the rest wondered what they were all gonna see and how long this movie would take.
Tommy: "What?"
Sue: "Sorry."
Tommy: "What?" The next scene shows us Tommy and Sue with their clothes on outside the jeep.
A lot of people, mostly the adults, feel more comfortable now that the two teens are wearing clothes again. But none as much as the two teenagers in question.
Tommy: "Hey, what's wrong?"
Sue: "I really messed up today, Tommy."
Tommy: "What, that thing with Carrie?"
"We all messed things up Sue". Whispered Heather.
Sue: "You know about that?"
Tommy: "Yeah, everyone knows about it, but you're not responsible for what Chris does."
"It wasn't only me loverboy". Says Chris. Tommy turns around to tell Chris to shut up, but sees to his surprise not a smug look on her face. The look on Chris face expresses smugness, but also sorrow. Could it be that Chris felt the slightest bit of sorrow?
Sue: "Yeah, but it was me, too."
Tommy: "You threw tampons at Carrie White?"
The surprise in Tommy's voice makes Sue and other girls cringe.
Tommy: "I kicked a kid in the ribs once. Yeah, while he was knocked out."
A lot of people look surprised. They had not expected that from the kind boy.
They couldn't remember a time he had gotten in a fight with or said an unkind word to someone, least of all haven hurt someone who was already down.
"Danny Patrick". Said his friend George Dawson with half a smile, remembering their childhood bully.
"Because this kid, he used to beat the living shit out of me every day in sixth grade."
"Why would he do that?" Whispers Carrie. From what she had seen Tommy Ross was one if not the kindest boy in their school. Tommy who sat close to Carrie and Miss Desjardin heard her. Tommy turned around and gave her a kind smile. Tommy notices that Carrie turned slightly red at the attention he was giving her. Which was not a rare thing, he was used to female attention ever since he started puberty. Miss Desjardin on the other hand looks angry at him.
It takes him a few seconds to understand that she isn't angry at him, but that she is worried about Carrie. After what he had seen, he couldn't blame her.
"I don't know why either Carrie". He says to the shy girl.
The girl stares in his eyes. He can't help but notice that she really has beautiful eyes once you take the time to look at them.
"Those people are the real losers". He says. Miss Desjardin gave him a gratefull smile, while Carrie blushed.
"Danny Patrick."
"Do you mean Danny D Patrick?" Asks officer Geraldine Jones.
"What do you know, aunt Geraldine?" Asks Billy Delois.
His aunt stares at him for a few seconds. He stares back at her. He and his aunt don't get along that well.
"He's in Prison".
"Did you apologize to Carrie."
Sue: "Did you apologize to Danny Patrick?"
Tommy: "No, but we're not in sixth grade anymore." Tommy tills Sue up and kisses her.
Sue: "Don't."
Tommy: "He was a dick to me. What did Carrie White ever do to you."
Tommy looked at his girlfriend and saw that Sue was looking down. While a part was disappointed in his girlfriend, he still loved her and hoped that by seeing this she would do better in the future. He kissed her on the cheek and watched as she began to smile again.
A red car drives in a street and parks before a big house.
Chris and Tina: "Whooooo!"
Chris: "And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why he lost his license."
"Ohh really Mr Nolan!" Says officier Geraldine as Billy Nolan cursed under his breath.
"Than why are you still driving?".
Billy has no answer on that question. At the same time Tina and Chris get looks from there parents. Yet another thing they would have to talk about with them later.
Tina: "Then why are you still driving?"
Billy: "I don't need a license if they can't catch me."
"But we have you now, don't we Mr Nolan?" Says policeman Zack Rigger.
"Look, I'm sorry! I promise it won't happen. But you can't hold me responsible for my future self's actions''. Said Billy Nolan.
The police officers looked at each other. No matter how much they wanted to hold him accountable Mr Nolan was right. They had no prove right now he had driven without license, but they would watch him after this.
"Alright Mr Nolan, but only this time". Answered policewoman Maggie McGreger.
The screen shows a big and modern bedroom.
The (unpopular) students who had never seen Chris's room look at the screen with wonder.
The doors opens and the teenagers get inside and Chris and Tina jump on the bed. Chris gets to her laptop.
Chris: "Jackie's email, Jackie's email!"
Tina: "Chris, no. No!"
Billy: "Wow. Why don't you two kiss or something while you're at it?"
"Yesss, do it!" Scream some male students and some female students. Most of the adults decide to ignore this and continue watching, while the others try to shut up the students. Chris smiles at the crowd and gives them a wink. Before anyone can progress what's happening, she jumps on Tina and leans forward. The students yell surprised the two girls are actually going to kiss. Before the two can kiss the girls pull back at the last second. Some adults including the girls parents shake their heads at their daughters behavior, but most people in the room are simply laugh at their shenanigans.
Billy: "Oh baby."
Chris: "Don't be stupid." Chris runs to Billy and starts kissing him.
Tina: "Wait, Do you think we're going to get detention because of that; Because that would suck."
"Yes". Answers Tina with a grimm expression on her face, thinking about Miss Desjardins angry face.
Chris: "No, She should be thanking us for helping her through her first period. I got her a tampon, So what?"
"Thank you Miss Hargenson". Says Mr Rodney with a sneer. Chris tries to ignore it, but feels her checks go pink.
Tina: "You were only trying to help her, right?"
"Right". Whispers Eleanor Snell. She could only shake her head at the what her daughters friends were saying and doing. She knew that they could be catty, but she had thought more of them than this. Eleanor Snell believed in knowing the right people in live, but she could not help but wonder now at what cost?
Chris: "We should post it."
Everyone in the room turns to look at Chris. People look in disbelief at the girl.
After all they had done, they wanted to post a video of it online where everyone could see it? Chris looked around noticing the looks of horror and disgust she is getting. Carrie is refusing to look at her and Miss Desjardin looks like she wants to hurt her. But the worst are the looks from the police force and her father John Hargenson. Her father is extremely pale, she has only once seem he look once like that before. It was when she was 8 and he had blown a big case from one of his biggest clients. They had left her father's practice soon after.
"I won't do it". Says Chris to no one in perticulair. Despite this, people still look at her. It does not matter, her future self is probably joking like she and Tina just did. And even if they did this had not happend yet, so no one could punish her. Ignoring the feeling of loathing in her stomach, she looks at the screen again.
Tina: "No, I'm in it."
Chris: "No one's going to see you, Teenie."
The girls mother and father can only shake their heads.
"Billy: What? What are you doing?"
Billy Nolan looked at his girlfriend wondering if she has the guts to do it.
Chris: "Carrie White."
Tina: "Favorite movie?"
Chris: "Bloodsport."
The room looked uncomfortable at what they were seeing.
Billy: "Favorite drink?"
Chris: "Bloody Marie."
''Bitch'' Whispers Freddy Holt. His mother puts her arm around him, but does not admonish him. Looking around he sees he is not the only one getting sick. Multiple people look like they want to hit the spoiled girl.
Chris presses the button, posting the video online.
The room goes quiet, disturbed by the cruelty they were seeing. The people could not believe Chris Hargenson had actually posted the video online for the whole world to see, least of all herself. The silence was soon broken by a sob from Carrie. Miss Desjardin turned to her student trying to comfort her. But outside some tears that were rolling down her cheeks, Carrie refused to cry and was mostly silent. Watching her student struggling to keep strong, broke something in Miss Desjardin and she marched to the Ultra's. Principle Morton and some teachers noticed Rita's anger and fearing for what she might do in anger, followed her. Other adults and some parents also went up, preparing to intervern in the coming conflict. Just before Miss Desjardin was in front of Chris Hargenson and could give her a piece of her mind she was stopped by Morton.
He took her arm making Miss Desjardin look at him with disdain.
''I understand you are angry, Rita but you need to think this through''. Said Miss Martina.
''I am thinking clearly, it's you all that are not thinking clearly.'' Said Miss Desjardin.
''Rita, this has not happend yet you can't punish Miss Hargenson''. Said Mr Ullman. This only seemed to enrage Miss Desjardin more.
''Are you are just letting her get away with this, is no one going to do anything?!'' Said Miss Desjardin. She felt powerless, if no one supported her how could she protect Carrie from anyone doing something similair in the future?
''No Rita, I don't know how yet seeing this has not happened, but I promise you there will be consequences a plenty''. Said Principal Morton. This calmed Miss Desjardin and after giving the Ultra's and especially Chris one scowling look, went back to Carrie who was being comforted by Miss Lopez and Miss Holt.
The answers had the exact opposite reaction on John Hargenson who stood up went to defend his daughter, but he was stopped by police officers.
''Mr. Hargenson, I think this is not the time to argue and you should be very glad this hasn't happend yet." Said officer Geraldine. The man wanted to argue but was stopped by Officer Jones's colleague.
"Your daughter would otherwise be in huge trouble, posting videos of this kind online, seeing that Miss White is underage''.
This stopped John Hargenson and he went quietly back to his seat. Seeing that everyone was back in their chair and mostly calm, the officers took a breath and went back to their seat. Just in time as the scene changed.
The scene changes again to the living room of Carrie's house. Inside is Margaret, who sews and sings a song from the radio.
The crowd watches with disgust. How could Margaret enjoy her evening after abusing her daughter? Where was Carrie anyway?
Margaret: "Brightly beams Our Father's mercy, From his Lighthouse evermore. But to us he gives the keeping of the lights along the shore. Let the lower lights be burning." Margaret stops sewing and turns of the radio. She walks to the prayer closet and opens it. Inside is Carrie, who is sleeping.
"You were all that time still in that torture room". Asks Jessica Upshaw. Carrie could not answer. It was not unusual for her to be locked away hours or days in the prayer closet.
''Does she lock you in that room often for longer periods of time?'' Asks officer Geraldine Jones gently. Carrie quitely nodded her head. Images of Carrie stuck in that room for hours, even days enter peoples minds. Geraldine Jones shakes her head, storing away the information for later.
Margaret shakes Carrie, who wakes up.
Margaret: "Did you finish you're prayers, little girl?"
Carrie: "Yes, Momma." Margaret kisses Carrie's check.
Margaret: "That's my good girl."
Carrie watches the scene unfold, a part of her longing for her momma.
Rita Desjardin looks at Carrie and sees the gentle smile and love in Carrie eyes while watching the scene. A feeling of dread comes over her. Carrie still loved her mother after everything the woman had put her through. Which itself was not that strange no, matter how hard it was to swallow, but it could cause trouble in the future. What if Margareth's hold on Carrie was to much to overcome and Carrie choose her mother? Worse, what if she refused to press charges against Margareth or denied everything they had seen so far? Carrie was a great actress with years of experience under her belt, who could fool a judge in believing her mother did not hurt her. After all the whole of Chamberlain had not suspected a thing in 16 years of knowing Carrie and her mother. And once Margareth knew that they suspected her of abusing her daughter, what would she do? Would she hurt Carrie or try to run away with her to another town far away from Chamberlain so the circle could start over again?
No, she would not think about it. She had to have faith. the teachers and other adults of Chamberlain were on her side and Carrie trusted her. She would prove to Carrie that trust was not misplaced and protect her even if it was from herself.
"I love you''.
The Wilson twins look at the screen. The scene would have been sweet on its own, but after everything they had seen there was no denying that Margareth might love her daughter, but she was also very manipulative. First abusing her and witholding her love and then giving it to her freely. But these things were never for free. Did Carrie know that?
Carrie: "I love you, too, Momma."
