"Crush"
Kenshin had a crush on Kaoru.
The biggest most epic gigantic crush you can ever think of.
-Honestly! -Sanosuke complained. -I feel like I'm melting!
It was a hot day to be having P.E. class at the soccer field, but the coach - a somber man in his late thirties who enjoyed to smoke a little too much to be a P.E. teacher - considered that if his students didn't suffer while exercising, then the training was for nothing.
The boys were already covered in sweat. At the moment, they were resting near the stands, sitting on the grass under the shade they gave. Sanosuke rested with his legs stretched out, hands supporting his body behind his back; Kenshin looked straight ahead as always, and he had not being paying attention to Sano's complaints about their coach Saito.
No. His eyes were fixated on the object of his affections. Said lady continued to run on the tracks with the rest of the girls, but it was obvious she was the fastest and with the most resistance from the group; she didn't looked as tired as the others.
After five long suffering years pinning after said crush, Kenshin believed it was time to make a move. They were already of age, if you could say, they were both almost eighteen; and Kenshin had urges that needed to be mended... sort of.
-Who are you looking at? -Asked Sanosuke after finally realizing Kenshin had not been paying attention to him.
The redhead didn't even flinch.
-No one. -He answered, putting on "the mask".
Which sadly, didn't work with Sano, he was afterall his bestfriend.
-No one, my ass! -He complained. -You're drooling!
Kenshin frowned.
-I'm not.
-Are too! -Sano refuted. -I think I know who the girl is Mr. "I don't need a girlfriend".
Kenshin sighed. Might as well come clean.
-Fine -he said a little too irritated. -I liked Kamiya Kaoru, happy?
-Very. -Sano chuckled. -You should ask her out, you big idiot, I know for a fact she won't say no.
-It's not that... it's just... complicated.
-Why? Because you're bestfriends? I didn't think you'd be the kind of guy who worries about friendships -Sano pointed, and then lay down completely on the grass.
Kenshin startled.
-And why not? -He asked confused. -She's been my friend since the beginning of primary school, our parents were bestfriends in college too -He complained. -And, we live across the street.
Kenshin's eyes fell again on the object of his affections. The girls have stopped running and where chattering and playing on the field.
-So? -Sanosuke asked.
-It's kinda ackward, that's what it is. -Kenshin confesed, he sounded resigned. -Not to mention, if things go wrong, not only her father but also mine will chop me to pieces.
Sano laughed.
-Then, you just need to make sure everything words -he said as if it was the most obvious and simplest of things.
And maybe it was, Kenshin thought, but he wasn't going to acknowledge it.
Leaning down on the ground like Sano was before, he risked a last glance at the girl of his affection.
-I don't know. -He sighed. -I feel like the moment I say something a storm will unfold.
That broke Sano into a fit of laughter.
Kenshin looked at him irritated.
-Yeah, laugh all you want but you know what I'm saying. You know how she is, she's your cousin afterall.
Sanosuke burst of laughing.
-She'll freak out! -He exclaimed delighted, there were tears at the corners of his eyes. -She might think you have completely lost your mind, or that you're just playing her a prank.
Kenshin hated him all the more.
A cold wind run the field then; the clouds started to gather and the sunlight diminished.
-Oh thank God, finally a break! -Said Sanosuke relieved, and then an idea shined in his head -Hey Kenshin!
The redhead looked at him.
-Might as well do something -he said smiling - the storm is already unfolding and you may as well get wet.
Kenshin grimaced.
And then they both were fighting, wrestling on the grass.
Oh, wonder of wonders!
He could feel at that moment the attention being drawned to them, more especifically to him. His eternal crush was looking at him with a half smile while shaking her head in dissaprovement.
Oh well... He might as well try to feign ignorance.
He knew, of course, that by that point it was already something more than a crush.
But how did it all started, you may ask.
Well...
Five years ago...
They were officially in junior high. They had just had their first day of school and they have decided to celebrate just because - Sanosuke's words - that afternoon at the ice cream parlor. There was a new establishment that had opened about a week ago, but it was already famous for its grilled ice cream.
Kenshin had always had a sweet tooth, so he loved the idea inmmediately, while Kaoru and Sano teased him about him being still a child. Either way, the three of them order a big chop of ice cream; chocolate for Sanosuke, strawberries and cream for Kaoru, and chocomint for Kenshin. They mingled with the rest of the group once they have their cones.
The establishment was near the park, so most of its tables were on the cobblestone floor, their group put two tables together. They were a group of seven in total, three boys and four girls. Kaoru always sat between Sano and Kenshin, however, she was not precisely a tomboy, but she was not very lady-like either, she was something in between. And perhaps it had been because of this that Kenshin had noticed the change in his best friend choice of clothes.
She was wearing a loose sweather over what seemed to be a short dress, one that Kenshin remembered too well. It had been a birthday present from Kaoru's best gir-friend, Misao, but it was too revealing according to Kaoru's words and so she hadn't worn it ever since. It had no sleeves nor straps. But it seemed Kaoru had find the right way to wear it. With the sweater it kinda looked like a two pieces set. The sweater was light and it looked fresh, its lavander color matched Kaoru's skin... Not to mention that, since it was loose, at some moments Kaoru's left shoulder would be left exposed.
And for some reason he was always drawn to said vision whenever he catched a glimpse of the swift movement of the fabric falling.
And yes... it was also this what make him aware of Kaoru's other "problem".
She was laughing at one of Sano's jokes, everyone was, really, even him. And drawned as he was to look at his both best friends he couldn't avoid noticing Kaoru's peculiar movement of holding her chest... It could have been seen as holding her belly due to laughter, but the height showed otherwise. Kenshin raised an eyebrow and then frowned; he couldn't stop looking closely at that movement. Kaoru seemed to be between squeezing and pulling something, "Aha!" thought Kenshin, he had no doubt then that Kaoru was trying to adjust the garment underneath.
Then someone asked him a question and he completely forgot of what he had seen...
...
But not for long...
...
The were walking through the park after having ice-cream, everyone wanted to go to the playground and just chill. While they were walking, however, Kenshin noted again, Kaoru doing the same, and at some point it almost seemed like she was holding her breast...
His whole face turned red!
And he looked away from her. Anywhere but her!.
While Kaoru did not have a large bust, she had, in his most secret opinion, a nice shape; and whenever Kaoru trying to adjust whatever it was she was trying to adjust, the shape of her breast could be admired through the soft fabric of the sweater.
After two more attemps from her part, Kenshin finally realized that she seemed to do it whenever she thought no one was looking, and he felt all the more guilty.
One big part of him wanted to somewhat help her, while other part - more darker and unknown - wanted to do more. Though, if he was being honest, he did not have clear what exactly more meant.
So he just tried and failed miserably to pretend nothing was happening.
Hard to do it whenever more than one of his friends kept asking him if he felt ok, since he seemed to have a fever...
...
On the way back home, Kenshin thought that perhaps he could offer her his jacket if not asking her directly if she needed help. He knew for a fact that she'll say no, the stubborn girl... But, honestly, it wasn't really much that he could do, because asking her 'Do you need help holding them?' was certainly NOT a thing to ask to ANYBODY under ANY situation, ESPECIALLY NOT Kaoru of all people...
But they were about to take the bus and he knew Kaoru would feel more aware of her... problem.
-Are you ok? -He finally asked on the bus stop.
Kaoru looked him curious if not confused.
-I'm fine -she said- you are the one who worries me, you look like you have a fever.
To this his cheeks turned more red.
-Oh, I'm ok, trust me. -He said avoiding her eyes.
-If you said so. -She said, and she took advantage of him looking away from her to try for the umpteenth time to try to fix the garment below her sweater without noting, sadly, that the redhead was immediately drawn to her since've been spent the whole afternoon aware of her.
Then Kaoru looked at him and he averted his gaze as soon as she did, way too fast that she, of course, noticed.
-Seriously Kenshin, what's wrong? -She inquired a little too preocupied.
He shook his head, embarrased.
-Nothing.
-Nothing always mean something! -She looked upset now and Kenshin wondered if she had somehow read his previous thoughts, which he hoped she had not.
He debated with himself then, how to put his worries in words without looking like a total pervert. And praying over and over again, as well as pleading not to say the words "do you need help holding them?". But Kaoru being Kaoru kept pressing until he finally acknowledge - in a way, backed by her and with his arms up on defence- the problem.
-I just notice the problem you been having.
Kaoru blinked confused.
-Problem?
-With your clothes I mean -he said not looking at her.
Kaoru, a little self concious, looked at herself, at the outfit she was wearing and that it had took more than an hour to put together.
-You... do not like how I looked? -She asked, and Kenshin hating himself for putting that doubt and insecurity in Kaoru's eyes.
-I love how you look! -He blurted out.
Kaoru's cheeks colored red.
-You do?
-I do! -He assured. And then confessed, with his voice getting lower and lower untirl it was nothing but a whisper babbling mess-It's just... I notice how you... struggled... with your breast.
-What?! -Kaoru snaped, face red and arms instinctively going over her chest. It was now her who was backing down.
-Whatever you're thinking it's not like that! I just saw you kind of holding them! -He miserably explained.
To say she was more than embarrased it would be an understatement!
-Since when have you been looking?! -She demanded to know, panicked and evidently upset.
-It's not like that! I wasn't looking because I wanted to look at them, trust me, I didn't! -That was a lie and he knew it.
Oh lord! If he could just get strike by a lighting...
-What?! -More panicked now.
This was just getting worst! He panicked! And in spite Kenshin's subcouncious saying over and over again "Do not say... Do not say that... Absolutely NOT say that... Don't say it! Don't say it!"
-I mean... Do you need help holding them?
He ended up saying it.
And Kaoru burst like an steaming pot.
-KENSHIN NO HENTAIIII!
That was the first time he met Kaoru's sailor punch. And he kept the mark on his cheek for the rest of the day as a memento.
-Yeah -he said to no one -I shouldn't have say that.
Kaoru had run off away from him.
He didn't blame her.
...
But it all started from there.
...
They were best friends, along with Sano too but Sano being Sano was more often than not busy doing other shenanigans most of the time, so there were more times when he and Kaoru would spend time alone.
And it was in those moments when it started to happen.
He just noticed her...
From the curve of her neck whenever she moved her hair to the side, to the way her hips moved when she walked in front of him. How she would chew her thumb nail when she was nervous, and the smile she would give him everytime he helped her with something.
And he could not stop noticing her.
Junior high had been a mess of blushings and ackward moments, mostly on his part. And dealing with puberty had made everything worse. It did not helped that in most of those moments Kaoru always acused him of being a pervert.
And he certainly felt like one...
Not because he was a sick bastard, but because he was certain that thinking about how your bestfriends legs would look and feel like around your neck was anything but proper; not to mention the many, many times Kaoru's vision appeared in each and every one of his attendance of his male needs, mostly during nighttime.
So... a pervert he was.
PRESENT
-You look awful. -Kaoru told him.
And he knew she was right, in spite of having a great defence thanks to kendo, Sanosuke was far better than him in one hand combat, heck, he felt awful.
-Thanks. -He said, accepting the drink Kaoru offered him, while she sat next to him on the bench.
-It wasn't a compliment. -She refuted smiling.
Classes were over. P.E. had been the last class they had that day, and many students scattered around the field; some had to attend extra curricular activities in the campus, other decided to hang out, while the rest wen back home.
Kenshind'd decided to stay because he had too many thoughts in his mind; many of them related to the girl sitting beside him. As years went by, he could not stop the feelings he harvored in his heart, and the more his desire to haver her grew.
"What a hentai, ideed" he thought to himself.
He went to open his drink when he noted it wasni't his flavor but Kaoru's. He turned to look at her, she was already drinking from hers while she looked ahead.
-You gave me the honey one -he said.
Kaoru shruggered.
-So?
-You don't like to drink anything but the honey flavor -he stated, sitting straight.
The clouds rumbbled then.
-I felt like taking the apple flavor today. -She excused herself without looking at him.
Something was not right, he thoutht while looking at her.
-But that's my favorite not yours -he refuted.
She was onto something, he felt certain now.
-Geez, Kenshin, if you wanted it so much you can have it -She complained, but her cheeks were tainted red.
Kenshin's heart pounded irregularly, distracted, he retreat in his steps, unsure as always.
-No, I... I didn't mean to be rude... it's just weird. -He said.
Kaoru's mood went down a bit.
-Is it bad because is weird? -She asked, eyes casted down.
For a moment, he didn't know how or what to answer, he suddenly felt like they were talking about something entirely different from drinks.
-No... No, I guess not. -He answered at last.
Kaoru sighed.
-I can give you mine if you want, I didn't drink too much of it -she offered, she was finally looking at him.
He knew better than to keep pushing, so he nodded.
-Whatever makes you happy makes me happy.
The wind blew.
A chill went down both their bodies.
-Good. -She whispered.
-¡Ah!
And wonder of wonders...
Kaoru kissed him.
...
A chaste kiss on the lips...
She tasted like apples, and sugar, and a bit of salt... she had been biting her lip, he noticed. But oh, so heavenly!
...
She broke the kiss and looked him straight in the eyes. Kenshin's orbs were glazed and he looked baffled.
-Was it weird? -She asked him, cheeks pink.
-No... -He answered, his voice hoarse. -It was awesome.
Kaoru smiled.
That smile that captured his heart every time.
-Good. -She said standing up. -'Cuz that was my first kiss and since you didn't reject it, now you are officially my boyfriend.
-Oro?!
He was perplexed. While Kaoru started talking by counting with the fingers of one hand.
-Which mean you'll have to hold my hand when we go out, carry my books only if I ask you, and give me a kiss whenever we say hi or bye to each other.
Kenshin snapped then, a babbling mess, again.
-W...wait, what do you mean, I mean, you.
Kaoru felt upset.
-Did you understand?! -She asking him, while frowning.
Kenshin jump on his place, back straight.
-Hold hands, carry books and kiss a lot, I got it!
Kaoru smiled then, satysfied, cheeks pink. It wasn't exactly what she had said, but it would do for now, she thought.
Kenshin found her beautiful, especially so when she turned to a shyer mood.
-Do you want me to be your girlfriend, Kenshin? -She asked him. -'Cuz I want you to be my boyfriend. -She confessed.
The wind blow again. The sky had turned gray, and lighting could be seen from time to time. The storm promissed to be chaotic.
Kenshin, however, smiled.
-Aah. -He answered before standing up and holding Kaoru in his arms, drink forgotten on the bench.
He kissed her just as it started to rain.
Owari.
