A/N: Okay, I know it has been almost four months since I posted and in that time a lot has happened. I'll be going into more detail later but for now, enjoy this long, long, LONG, chapter.

"Only the unknown frightens men. But once a man has faced the unknown, that terror becomes the known."
― Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
The figure stood above the waterfall, at least, that's what it looked like he was doing. His body was in shambles. Some places where open wounds would be prevalent, black and dark green sludge covered them. Part of his face was covered by his helmet but his left ear was exposed. The pieces of a military uniform either busted or scorched. His body was contorted in such a way that some fingers bent in unnatural ways. The mangled state of his legs would've rendered it impossible for someone like him to stand and yet here he was, standing and watching as Gali walked away from Ga-Koro towards the waterfall. She hadn't noticed him yet but he knew it was time to leave. Black and red energy encircled him and instantly he found himself in a black void.
The sludge drained from his body and his mauled and mangled corpse fell lifeless on the ground. Makuta walked up to the corpse and smiled. His Rahi saw the child and despite being far away, Makuta heard it all. The malevolent master of shadows laughed. When he attempted to intimidate the Toa, he had sensed four organic lifeforms among them. Lifeforms he had not since for over a thousand years. Now, he has found something much more intriguing.
"So, there are new players in this game and one of them is of my brother's line." Makuta smiled if he could get his claws on this "Ruby". Makuta smiled at the idea. To turn his own brother's progeny against him. Oh how delicious that would be.
"It seems that you have made a mistake brother. Why the Turaga kept them from me is a mystery. A mystery I intend to solve but, you have unwittingly given me the means to tear this world asunder and if I escape, not even our fellow Great Beings will save you from my wrath." Makuta picked up the pilot's corpse and hung it on his wall. His pets' "offering" was amusing but it was a surprise to learn how useful it had become.
Perhaps he could try to fix it. His brother was great at that. So, it stands to reason that he would have that same power too, right? Makuta smiled at what was to come.
"Soon, my brother, you will know that I was right."
About a week had passed since Gali left. The healing powers of the Toa of Water accelerated Ruby's natural body processes to regenerate cells, repair bones and tissue, and heal from her injuries. The end result was an almost immediate recovery after her injuries healed. Takua would also visit Ruby every day as she healed and recovered and by the time she was good to go, Ruby ran around Ga-Koro with excitement to be able to walk around again. That is until it was time to leave. Which brought her and Takua before Nokama in her hut.
"Turaga, you wanted to see us?" Takua asked. The Turaga nodded.
"Yes, please take a seat." Nokama answered. Ruby and Takua did as they were asked and sat before the Turaga.
"I would like to thank you for rescuing us. You both are bold and true to your word. All the Matoran of Ga-Koro owe you their gratitude. For once I am glad that Macku snuck away from the village, so that she could find you!" she praised. Nokama looked at the two. While both were grateful for her praise, she saw they were confused.
"Your eyes are filled with questions about the mysteries of Mata Nui my friends. Giving you some of the answers you seek is small payment for your deeds, but I offer you what knowledge I can. Our astrologer has seen great changes in the skies, and has read the dark future of Mata Nui. The Toa have come and begun their mighty quests to save us from the Makuta. And yet here, in the midst of this upheaval, are you, a pair of brave wanderers in this dangerous land." Nokama said. Takua didn't know what to say. Ruby thought back to the battle with the Tarakava and despite her injuries, she vaguely remembered seeing the Toa of Water and her words.
"Nokama, before I passed out from fighting the Tarakava, I saw someone save you. Who was?" Ruby asked.
"She is Gali is the Toa of Water, the hero of Ga-Koro. Like her brothers-in-arms, she has come to save us from the evils of Makuta. She protects the seas with tidal waves and rainstorms as her domain. Her mask, the Kanohi Kau Kau, gives her the power to breathe freely under the waves." Nokama answered.
"What are Toa?" Ruby asked
"They are warriors who protect the Matoran. There are six Toa, one for each element. They are Tahu, Toa of Fire, Lewa, Toa of Air, Gali, Toa of Water, Kopaka, Toa of Ice, Onua, Toa of Earth, and Pohatu, Toa of Stone."
"They sound like huntsmen." Ruby said. Nokama tilted her head.
"Huntsmen?" Nokama questioned.
"I guess you could say they're like Toa but they don't have elemental powers. They have an ability called a semblance that is unique to each individual and a huntsman that's a girl is called a huntress, which is what I am." Ruby answered. Nokama looked at Ruby with an intrigued expression. She then turned toward the shrine to Gali.
"The word Toa is Matoran for "Warrior", in the past, we would refer to huntsmen and huntresses by a similar name, Epi-Toa."
"What does that mean?" Ruby asked. Nokama looked back at Ruby.
"In our language it means "Warrior of Skin"". Nokama answered. Ruby looked understandingly at the name. A simple but effective name. Nokama then looked at Takua.
"What about you Takua?" Nokama asked. Takua looked at Nokama but wasn't sure how to say his next words fully.
"I don't really know, I did what I had to. Aside from my name, I don't know who I am. I guess what I mean is, who am I?" Takua said. Nokama smiled lovingly.
"I believe someone has a plan for you, and it may be intertwined with Ruby's. These plans are far greater than your stature might suggest. Perhaps you will become a hero like the Toa or maybe something more. I do not know." Nokama replied. She continued.
"The Matoran have forgotten their past and even we Turaga have little record of what came before." Nokama answered.
"But the ocean remembers. Like history, the ocean holds many secrets in its forbidden depths. It surrounds Mata Nui, it covers it; it watches the island as it sleeps, and remembers. It caught the Toa gently when they descended, and delivered them to us, it helped you in freeing the Rahi you fought, and it guided Gali for our rescue. You both are absolutes in these uncertain times but you, Takua; your past is forgotten and your future is an open book. You must find your own destiny, Takua." Nokama answered. Takua nodded.
"I understand, Turaga." Takua replied. Nokama gave a slight nod.
"Nokama," Ruby asked, earning Nokama's attention.
"What about Macku? How did she escape? I don't think the Tarakava would have gotten her unless she was already outside the village." Ruby questioned. Nokama nodded.
"You are correct. Though this is not the first time she has wandered off, it is the first time it has saved our village." Nokama said.
"What do you mean?" Takua asked. Nokama smiled at the thought of Macku's actions.
"Macku often sneaks away to spy on Hewkii, the Koli champion. She tells me she is just practicing her boating, but I know the truth." Nokama explained
Aww. Ruby thought with a smile.
"And it is far too dangerous for her to be outside of the village now. For her own safety, I will forbid her to go, even though her wandering saved us this time." the Turaga finished.
In that moment, Ruby swore she heard glass shatter.
"What?" Ruby said
"As I said, it is too dangerous for Macku, even though she has saved us, I cannot let her leave now. The Rahi could return and we must prepare for when that happens." Nokama asked
"But Turaga, what about Toa Gali? Surely she can keep you safe until the Rahi leave." Takua said.
"No, Gali must continue her quest to find the Kanohi and master them. If we called on her for every Rahi attack she would never complete her quest. Right now, Gali helps us through her quest and calling on her is a last resort. We have defended our home from Makuta's dark creatures for a millennium. I know that the people of Ga-Koro can hold out for a few more days." Ruby and Takua understood but their posture and expressions suggested otherwise.
"I assure, I will let Macku leave the village once I know the shores of Ga-Koro are free. Perhaps you might partner with Macku again." Nokama said.
"Yes, Turaga." Ruby and Takua said in unison.
"If you travel to Po-Koro, please meet with Hewkii if you can. He may have heard of what has happened here and will no doubt be worried for her." Nokama asked.
"We will. I hope everything is okay over there too." Ruby answered. Nokama smiled.
"Pray that you're right, Child. Makuta's influence is strong and felt across this island and there is no telling what he might do."
Yang and Pohatu stood in the middle of Po-Koro, it had only been a few days since repairs were completed to the whole village. Yang was stunned at how fast the Po-Matoran had worked to fix their home.
"You know, where I'm from, repairs don't take so fast." Yang said.
"How so?" Pohatu asked. Yang walked and looked around Po-Koro with Pohatu in tow.
"Those walls would only be half finished and most of the buildings would still be in ruins." Yang stopped in front of the center of the village and looked down and smiled at where she stood.
"Although the road would definitely be good as new by now." Yang said. The huntress and Toa began walking again.
"I see, restoration does not come so quickly for you." Pohatu replied. Yang shook her head.
"No, we like to be thorough." Yang said.
"Any particular reason?" Pohatu asked. Yang hesitated, not out of fear but felt unsure of how to describe the Grimm herself. To her amazement. The island seemed to be utterly devoid of Grimm. Not even a small Nevermore or even the sight of a Beowolf ever caught her eyes. Still, she had to find a way to describe it and describe them and could only think of one thing.
"Let's just say that we have our own Rahi to deal with." Yang answered.
"Interesting, so it seems your world has its own monsters to fight. I assume you and your friends fight these creatures yourselves?" Pohatu asked
"Yeah, we do. Though we aren't called Toa." Yang replied. Pohatu was curious.
"Then what do they call warriors like you and your friends?" Pohatu asked
"We're called huntresses. Though in my world you would be called a Huntsman." Yang answered. Pohatu thought on the word and smiled.
"Huntsman, a very interesting way to describe your role. You hunt the Rahi you fight." Pohatu said.
Yang couldn't help but smile as she turned her gaze from Pohatu to the rest of Po-Koro as they passed the village carvers.
"The sculptures are beautiful." Yang said
"Indeed they are." Pohatu said. "The Matoran of this village carve these works of art to worship Mata Nui. They believe that by building these sculptures and trading them all over the island they make the people as strong as the stone they're carved from."
The two passed by various stands in the bazaar selling various items from fish, to cattle, to stone carvings. However there was one that caught Pohatu's eye.
"Ah, but the sport of Kolhii is the pride of the island." Pohatu declared with a smile. Yang looked to see a stand selling ball shaped rocks. The sign above was an advertisement for the product. Though she could not read it, in the Matoran writing, it read:
Faster than the Sound Barrier and smoother than the Sand River! Take home your own Comet today!"
Pohatu and Yang approached the stand. To Yang's surprise, the Matoran she saved from the Rock Worm was running the stand. When he saw Yang and Pohatu. The Po-Matoran's face lit up.
"Ah, hail, heroes of Po-Koro! I never dreamed that I would be blessed with my stand being greeted by the Patron of Kolhii and the wonderful Epi-Toa who saved me from Makuta's dark beast." How may I be of service to you both? Perhaps I might interest you in a Comet?" the merchant replied. Pohatu let out a joyful laugh.
"Why thank you but I sadly must decline. However, would you be pleased with a demonstration? As the Patron of Kohlii, I'm always eager to try out new items and equipment to the sport." Pohatu said with enthusiasm. The merchant was ecstatic.
"I'd be delighted Toa of Stone." The merchant hurriedly grabbed the ball and gave it to Pohatu. He went to the main avenue of the Bazaar with the Comet ball in hand. Pohatu looked at Yang.
"Sun Dragon, care to help me with this demonstration?" Pohatu called. Yang was surprised by Pohatu's request. She had no doubt in her abilities but was unsure why he chose her.
"Sure." Yang said and ran up to the Toa. The merchant watched the pair.
This will be most interesting. He thought.
"What are you doing?" Yang whispered.
"Listen, you have to trust me on this one. Something feels off about this "Comet" and I need to know why." Pohatu whispered in response. Yang let out a quiet "oh" and the two made plans for the demonstration. Yang then moved to one end of a field and Pohatu remained where he was. The Toa of Stone then tapped the back of his foot and circular walls of rock rose up with a goal-like rock formation forming behind him and Yang who turned to see it.
"Alright, best of three wins. Only use your hands to block the ball. Any tools you can use to reach the ball are acceptable. Are you ready for this?" Pohatu said.
"Ha! I was born ready!" Yang quipped as her bracelets expanded into gauntlets. Pohatu smiled at Yang's enthusiasm.
"Then let us begin!" Pohatu declared. The Toa tossed the ball into the air and both Yang and Pohatu charged forward. Yang propelled herself with her weapon and met Pohatu just as he was about to kick the ball.
Pohatu side stepped Yang and made a B-line for the goal. Yang gave chase and was gaining on Pohatu. The Toa kicked the Comet toward the ball but Yang pushed herself and barely caught the ball before it went in. The crowd was stunned.
"Nice catch. Think you can match that?" Pohatu asked.
"Match it? I'm going to beat it." Yang retorted. The Sun Dragon charged and kicked the ball as she went. Pohatu went to meet her. The two clashed with their feet fiercely but the Toa of Stone managed to dribble the ball away and kick the Comet. Yang watched in surprise as the stone went in the goal. The crowd cheered. Yang wasn't mad and seemed to find the act exciting. She enjoyed a good challenge. She went to the ball and started to dribble it like a soccer ball.
Yang then made her move. Yang ran headlong at Pohatu. The Toa of Stone tried to kick out of her feet but she side-stepped him and kicked the ball into the goal behind him. The crowd went wild in disbelief. The Patron of Kolhii was outplayed by the Sun Dragon. Pohatu laughed at his own miscalculation and offered a fist bump. Despite this being a demonstration, he was enjoying the game.
"Well done. Only one point left and the winner takes it all." Pohatu said. Yang smirked and fist bumped Pohatu.
"Bring it on." Yang said. Pohatu leaned in.
"Anything on those balls?" he whispered.
"Not much, it flies faster like the merchant said but it feels damp." Yang quietly answered.
"Damp?" Pohatu question.
"I don't know how to explain it but it feels like it was put in some place cold and moist." Yang replied.
"Good start but now we need to learn more if we want to keep the village safe." Pohatu quietly said
"Then let's give this last round our best." Yang whispered.
Pohatu nodded and backed away. Yang backed up and tossed the ball to a bystander who caught it.
"Care to do the honors?" Yang called out. She and Pohatu took their stances and readied themselves. Without a word, the Po-Matoran attempted to get up to throw the ball in, several other villagers began to lift him up. The Matoran threw the ball into the center of the field.
The two heroes charged. Yang first kicked the ball to the goal but Pohatu intercepted it. He began to run but Yang caught up to him. Pohatu kicked the ball over Yang and he lept over her and began to run at the goal. Pohatu kicked as it seemed to be another victory.
Not this time, Yang ran and kicked the ball away from Pohatu and ran with it on the edge of the field. She was inches from the goal but Pohatu used his Kakama to reach the goal first and catch it. Turaga Onewa soon arrived and watched in silence. The crowd was at a fever pitch. They began to chant.
"Who ate all the pies?! Who ate all the pies?! Somebody went and ate all the pies! From cinnamon to cherry pie! Even apple's said goodbye! Tell me, who ate all of the pies?!" They sang. Pohatu took a running stance. The crowd chanted the song again.
"Who ate all the pies?! Who ate all the pies?!" the crowd sang. The chant continued Yang charged forward and attempted to take the ball. Pohatu side stepped and made his way to the goal. Yang fired two shots at the ground with Ember Celica and jumped off the goal and began to kick the ball away from Pohatu. She ran but Pohatu took the ball back. Yang did the same. The two went back and forth until they found themselves moving around the arena in a fierce duel of kicks and dribbles to get the ball back. The crowd began to cheer in excitement. Yang and Pohatu's feet almost became blurry as sand and dust kick up from they're fierce movement. Yang's hair began to glow like fire as her speed increased and Pohatu used more of his Kakama. Soon, the ball was in the air. Both jumped to reach it. They had one chance. With one kick they could end it. Yang's lilac eyes turned red as she yelled in determination and power. Pohatu stayed silent as he gave his own kick.
A shockwave rang out and sand and dust flew in all directions. The Matoran and the merchant all covered their eyes but Onewa was undeterred as the sand moved away from his head and mask. Soon, the dust began to settle. The border of the stadium was ruined as cracked rocks and stone littered the ground. Very little of the field border remained. Turaga Onewa stepped forward onto the field. As he walked through the cloud of sediment and debris, the particles parted for the elder. He then stood near the center. As the dust settled, the crowd was stunned. Both players were still standing but that was not surprising. What was, however, was how exhausted they both were.
Both were breathing heavily. Yang's eyes were lilac again and she was drenched in sweat. Pohatu was also shaking from excitement. The match was unlike anything he could have guessed. Onewa looked at the two players and smiled.
"Look!" someone shouted and everyone turned and all began to whisper and talk about what they were seeing. Yang turned in the direction and her eyes slowly widened. Her goal had a hole in the back and on the other side, the Comet carved a trail into the main avenue of the Bazaar with the Comet stuck in the ground.
The crowd erupted in cheers and celebration as Onewa declared Pohatu the victor. They shouted with joy and began chanting again. Pohatu walked over to Yang with a smile and held out his hand.
"Fine… Sportsmanship… Yang." Pohatu said between breaths.
"Thanks… You… Were… Rock… Solid." Yang said in the same manner and shook the Toa's hand who laughed between breaths. As the Toa of Stone laughed, Yang couldn't help but do the same. The merchant looked on with a smile. The match went better than he ever thought possible. It was clear that even if they found the Comet's little secret, there wasn't enough of a case against it. It's like he said, the greatest weapon is the one you can't see.
Just as planned. he thought to himself. Now let's open for business.
"You saw it here folks, the Comet is the fastest on the market! Come and get your own comet for two Husi pecking birds or the equivalent!" the Merchant said and the crowds came to his stand.
Turaga Onewa saw the crowd flock to the merchant to get their hands on a Comet ball. He couldn't help but smile at their enthusiasm. However, something felt off but he could not prove it. He walked up to Yang and Pohatu who continued to laugh with each other.
"It seems you've gathered quite the crowd and with an impressive match to boot no less. Be proud of yourselves. The Matoran will remember this day fondly." Onewa said. All three of them looked at the crowd as they gathered around the merchant.
"Who ate all the pies?!" Who ate all the pies?!" the crowd cheered.
"However, I don't think your little exhibition was merely for show." Onewa pointed out.
"You are correct, Turaga. May we join you in your hutt? I think we have to talk about these Comets." Pohatu asked. Onewa nodded and led them into his hutt.
Ruby and Takua made landfall on the shore of Ta-Wahi just minutes ago. The sun was already setting by that point. The two made their way up the staircase. It had been a rather smooth ride back. They eventually reached a plateau and looked around.
"Okay, so where is this telescope again?" Ruby asked. Takua turned and looked to see the telescope.
"Up there, at the top of those stairs." Takua said.
"Aww, but I'm tired. Can't there be an escalator or something so we don't kill our feet." Ruby moaned.
"Then why don't we rest for a bit. Take in the view." Takua suggested. Ruby looked out on the horizon and saw the big blue ocean that lay beyond. Ruby smiled and sat down.
"Yeah, let's do that." Ruby answered. Takua took a seat next to her.
"Beautiful, isn't it." Takua said
"Yeah, it is." Ruby replied. The two then sat in silence as they watched the waves on the sea beyond.
"I always wondered what's out there." Takua said. Ruby look at the Ta-Matoran
"Huh?" Ruby said
"Out there, beyond the Great Barrier." Takua answered.
"Great Barrier?"
"It's an impenetrable force field that keeps the island hidden and protected from what's beyond the barrier. I've always wondered what could possibly be out there that the Barrier exists. Why was it made? Is there something worse than Makuta out there?" Takua explained. Ruby pondered Takua's question. She didn't know what was out there either. The only thing she knew was she was still on Remnant thanks to the shattered moon that shone in the night sky but one question plagued her mind. Could Remnant be more dangerous than the dangers of this island? As she thought about this, Ruby noticed a giant monument. It consisted of two large stones surrounded by six smaller ones and they stood near the stairs she and Takua just climbed. She stood up and slowly walked towards the monument.
"Takua, what do you think this is?" Ruby asked. The Ta-Matoran turned to Ruby and looked at the monument as well. Takua was just as curious as Ruby and just as puzzled. The two began to look up at the monument until their eyes looked at the top of the two stones in the center.
"I don't know. Though it seems… kind of… familiar." Takua answered. His speech slowed down as he spoke and he fell.
Neither Ruby nor Takua reacted to this sudden action. Whatever happened had trapped them both under the monument's spell. They fell on their backs and began to dream.
Ruby found herself in a black void. She was unsure what had happened after staring at the monument.
Where am I? She thought.
A light soon shone above a sand pit in front of her. She looked up and saw something fall to the ground and land in the pit. A giant white and smooth stone lay before her. The red cloaked huntress felt something familiar with this white stone. Not so much the stone itself but what it represented.
The ground beneath her shifted as the pebbles around her moved together and formed pyramids. Ruby looked up and saw a symbol in the sky. It was ovular in design but in the middle sat three circles. From these circles, a beam of light shot down from the heavens and shined on the stone and pebbles. An atmosphere of peace washed over the scene before the huntress as she smiled.
Her smile was short-lived as she soon felt the ground and sky shake. She heard and explosion and looked up to see the symbol shattered and the lights extinguished. A jagged black and red stone appeared and towered at the height of the white one in the middle. The black stone began to ooze black shadows that crept on the ground. The pebbles were unaffected but the stone was not so lucky. The shadows engulfed the white stone and then, the stone fell causing the towers to crumble and the stone began to sink as the pebbles began to huddle.
Black jagged rocks erupted from the shadows and surrounded the pebbles. Ruby became worried for them. What the black stone was doing, whatever or whoever it represented, was evil. She knew that. She worried if they would be able to escape.
What happened next surprised her. Flashes of light appeared above and down came six smoothe rocks and they surrounded the black and red stone and one by one, the black rocks crumbled to dust and the shadows receded until the black stone was left. The black stone began to crack and was soon covered in white lines. The last of the shadows vanished, the crack grew brighter until the black and red stone imploded. Ruby covered her eye as the implosion caused the light to engulf the scene entirely.
The light faded and Ruby uncovered her eyes. She looked down. To her shock, she was standing on water. She looked at her feet and held one up. The soles of her boots were dry. She did the same with the other one, also dry. She then looked up. There it was, Mata Nui. She was going to walk towards the but paused when she heard the sound of thunder. She turned to see the Bullhead she was on before she awoke on the island falling toward Mata Nui. Its right engine and wing were on fire, part of its left side was in a similar state and barely kept the left wing attached.
As the Bullhead drew closer to the island, the left wing grew more shaky. It soon tore off and ripped the hull of the aircraft and the engine exploded and took the back half of the Bullhead. Ruby was shocked at the sight. The front of the Bullhead continued to burn until it crashed on Mata Nui shortly after. Additionally, Ruby saw four colored orbs, a red one, white one, black, one, and yellow one. The white, black and yellow orbs landed on the island while the red orb landed near the shore.
Ruby instantly recognized what just happened.
"I knew it. I knew it." Ruby said to herself, a smile and tears of joy on her face. She was right about her team and better still, she knew where to look.
"Ruby" a voice called. Ruby looked around.
"Ruby." the voice called again. Ruby looked around still but could not find it's owner.
"Hello?" Ruby called out. She then turned her head.
"Hello?" she called again but no one answered. She then turned again.
A being of light stood in front of Ruby and stared at her.
"Whoa!" Ruby said in shock. The being was radiating with a golden aura. His face was covered by the light he gave off. He was humanoid in appearance but what surprised her the most was the antlers on his head. The being stared at Ruby as she got it.
"Sorry if I scared you. It's just that you came out of nowhere and I was just surprised." Ruby said as she dusted herself. The being stood in silence and continued to stare at Ruby.
"Hello?" Ruby asked. The being's silence became more and more uncomfortable with each passing moment.
"Are you alright?" asked the huntress. The being looked into Ruby eyes.
"I don't have much time. So I will keep this brief. You must hurry." the being said. His voice was calm and gentle but commanding a presence of power.
"Why?" Ruby asked. The being turned to face the island of Mata Nui. He pointed at the volcano.
"Below the volcano lies the heart of my brother's layer. He has become aware of your presence on the island. You must hurry and find your friends quickly before he comes for you." he said.
Ruby was becoming worried and scared.
"What's going on? Who's after me? Is it this Makuta monster?" Ruby asked. The being turned. His body changed as he did. Gold and black armor materialized on his body. His eyes became an ocean blue but his face was covered by a golden Hau. The antlers dissolved and tuned into a sword and shield. A blue cloak with a green interior covered his body. The being now looked biomechanical but still carried that calm and gentle voice.
"Don't be afraid. You and your team have been sent to free this island. You will free it from my brother's evil and the barrier that keeps it hidden. The time has come for the Matoran to once again walk with mankind in unity." the being proclaimed.
"What do you mean?" Ruby asked.
"There is more to this island than it seems, Child of mine. You hold the key to starting a new age of peace for the Matoran. You must unlock the power that lies within you and you destroy the Great Barrier and set my people free. However, you must first defeat my brother. If you fail, his evil will spread across the world and all life will bend to his terrible will. Ruby, Child of mine, you can do this; you must do this. The hope for our world's future is in your hands. I know you will make me proud." said the being. Ruby felt peace and comfort with every word he spoke. He asked a lot of her, yes but there was something about the way he said it. It felt genuine, honest, like he knew she would succeed. The world around her began to fade into a growing white light. She looked at the being before her.
"Wait, who are you?" Ruby asked. The being smiled.
"I am he who you and the Toa must awaken. Go, free my people, and defeat my brother. Be brave, be strong, and believe in your destiny, dear Child of mine." said the being. The world and the being were engulfed in light and then faded to black.
"Ruby, hey Ruby! Wake up! Are you alright?" Takua said, his voice becoming clearer for Ruby.
Her eyes opened slowly and blinked. It was now night time and Ruby slowly picked herself up. The huntress rubbed her head.
"Wha-what happened?" Ruby asked.
"Somehow we were knocked out and then had this weird dream. After that I wake up and you're talking in your sleep. You sounded scared." Takua said. Ruby stood up and looked at the monument and more specifically, the white statue.
"I think I was. A lot of weird things happened in my dream."
"Anything that can help?" Takua asked. Ruby smiled.
"We can find my friends now. I think I know where they are." Ruby answered.
"That could help. Where do we start?" Takua said. Ruby turned around and looked at the telescope.
"Let's figure out what's going to happen first." Ruby said and she walked towards the Great Telescope. Takua followed suit and both made their climb up the stairs. As they did, Ruby recalled what the Astrologer had told them before leaving Ga-Koro.
Takua and Ruby entered the hutt to the sound of inner monologue. The hutt was full of charts and instruments. Each contained the alignment of stars. Most were just gray or white dots but one stood out among the rest on each chart. A red dot with a tail like a comet. It was in every chart, on every constellation, on every instrument.
"Interesting," the Astrologer mumbled. "One of the stars has shifted and a piece of the moon has come into play. What could this mean?" The Astrologer went to her notes. She wore a Pakari on her face and her appearance was like the other Matoran of Ga-Koro. She took a brush and drew a constellation. All of the stars, the piece of the moon, and the red dot. She then wrote down something and pinned the chart to the wall. The Astrologer turned to see Ruby and Takua.
"Oh, sorry I didn't see you two come in. I'm in a bit of a rush at the moment. Is there anything I can help you with?" She asked. Takua and Ruby sat down.
"Are you the astrologer?" Ruby asked.
"Oh yes, I am. I am the astrologer. I chart the skies and watch the waters. Many things are happening in the heavens at the moment and many more will happen. The stars even seem to point to an untold prophecy. Something strange is happening." she answered.
"How do you do that?" Ruby asked. The astrologer turned to her notes and pulled several charts off of her walls and laid them on the ground in front of Ruby and Takua.
"Normally I use the telescope on the cliff but the recent attack has forced me to change my plans. Thankfully I finished building a smaller one here." The astrologer said. She approach the telescope.
"It's quite simple really, you look at the stars and draw in correlation to the carvings below. Once the carvings and stars match…"
"...A prophecy may come true." the words of the astrologer faded from her mind as Ruby stared at the great telescope that stood before her. The bottom of the telescope had several carvings. Each with a set of constellations with a red gem in each one over an image. The first she recognized as a canister on the water. The next was a warrior wielding a sword of fire. Followed by two creatures, a scorpion and a bird. Then there was a tall figure with a warrior with claws on his right. Next was someone holding up a mask that shined. Then a warrior with a sword and shield. The next saw ten warriors. Three warriors on the left and right stood between four warriors in the center. The last two were different. One showed a lone warrior standing ready to face a giant with a menacing face that stared down at the warrior down. The last was strange. It was an insectoid creature with shields on its arms. It was highly spherical in design and it was positioned into an aggressive stance. Ruby hoped that the last one never came true.
Ruby then looked through the telescope and saw the stars in the night sky and the first thing she noticed was the red star. It looked like a comet of some kind but its tail was unlike that of a comet. The star looked like an oval shape as it flew across the night sky. She saw the red star and noticed that the surrounding stars were in a familiar position.
"Takua, look at this." Ruby called. Takua stepped up and looked through the telescope. Ruby looked down at the carving of the scorpion and the bird and the constellation carved above it.
"Doesn't that constellation look familiar?" Ruby said. Takua looked at the carvings, then looked back at the stars through the telescope. Excluding the red star,
"Yeah, it looks like one of the carvings." Takua replied
"Not yet." Ruby said. "Though it will be very soon."
"So the question is not when. Instead, it's where." Takua said
Ruby yawned from exhaustion. It was clear that the answers to their questions would have to wait. For now, the pair resolved to sleep for the night and head out in the morning.
Pohatu and Yang stood near the entrance to Po-Koro the next day. Yang was visibly frustrated as she paced near the gate.
"I mean, why NOT take action? After the match we pulled off yesterday, how can they not listen to us; most of all YOU?!" Yang exclaimed. Her hair glowing and becoming more fiery as she spoke.
"Even the Patron of Kohlii has his limits. Even if the Comets feel damp, the Turaga is right. Without anything more conclusive, there's nothing we can do about it." Pohatu conceded.
"I wish I could investigate this further but I have to find the remaining Kanohi." Yang stopped and turned to face Pohatu
"So that's it? Your answer to this is give up? I thought Toa were suppose to protect Matoran!" Yang berated. Then something happened.
"Hey! I may not have been able to solve the mystery but I will never give up; not on the Matoran." Pohatu answered. His tone was one of anger. Not something Yang would know him for.
"I'm sorry, then how does leaving help Po-Koro?"
"You don't get it do you?" Pohatu said
"Regardless of what's happening, Makuta is the source. Finding the masks is still the top priority. If me and my brothers and sister can find our great Kanohi, we can face and defeat Makuta and possibly before things get out of hand." Yang wasn't convinced by the Toa's words.
"And what if things do?" Yang questioned
Pohatu sighed. He wasn't going to convince her. Whether it was duty, destiny, or something else all together, Pohatu knew he and Yang had to separate. Still, he could only answer Yang's question with one response.
"Then all we can do is wait for a chance to stop it." Pohatu answered. Yang's hair stopped burning and she slouched against the wall and slid down it to sit. Surprisingly, the rock was smooth and felt nice to touch. I almost melted Yang's frustrations away. On the ground, Yang sat in her disappointment. She hated doing nothing and she hated being unable to help make things better. She knew something was wrong and she knew what had to be done but she couldn't do anything about it. So, she decided to do what she felt would work.
"Do you mind if I stay here? I just want to look after them. I don't want them to lose anyone." Yang asked Pohatu, the Toa smiled. He understood her frustration and he admired her determination. Besides, having her here meant the villagers were safer from Makuta's beasts.
"You are welcome to stay if you wish, just be sure to tell me if something happens I'll be nearby." Pohatu answered. Yang smiled at Pohatu. The Toa held out a hand to her and she took it. Pulling her up, Pohatu gave one last smile to Yang.
"I'll keep an eye out for your sister while I'm out. If she or your friends show up, please tell them I said hello." Pohatu asked.
"Don't worry, I will." Yang answered.
Pohatu nodded and walked out the gate. Yang's eyes followed the Toa as he walked until suddenly, before leaving the tunnel out, Pohatu disappeared in a flash. Yang smiled at the spot where Pohatu used to be and walked back towards the bazaar. As Yang passed by the Comet stand, she failed to see a green liquid drip down the side of one of the balls.
Ruby and Takua had been traveling through the charred forest for sometime. Every step they took they noticed a series of Xs carved into one of the trees. Ruby or Takua would stop and carve an X into one of the trees as they passed by.
Ruby felt nervous. As she walked through the forest, there was this sense of unease and despair that she felt with every step. It felt… painful to look at. As if every tree was crying out in agony from their charred state.
"You alright Ruby?" Takua asked. Ruby didn't physically respond as she looked at the forest.
"What happened here?" Ruby asked.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Takua replied. Ruby still looked around at her surroundings.
"This looks… painful." Ruby said.
"Painful?" Takua asked "Why painful?" Ruby carved into the tree but with a little hesitance on her part.
"I feel like there's something still alive here and it's hurting. I want to help it but I can't. I don't know how." Ruby said. Takua looked at Ruby with a sympathetic expression. He felt it too and wanted to find out how to help. However, like Ruby, he didn't know how. From there the two walked in silence.
It was only a few more turns that something finally changed. Ruby ran a little farther ahead and failed to see the Ta-Matoran pacing back and forth until she was a few feet away from it.
"AH!" Ruby screamed. Takua heard her and ran to meet her.
"Ruby, are you alright?" Takua said as he picked up the red cloaked huntress.
"Yeah, just spooked."
"By wha-Whoa!" Takua exclaimed as he too was caught off guard by the Ta-Matoran. His Pakari and armor were all red and he paced left and right. He didn't seem to notice the two.
"Hi." Takua said nervously.
"Hello." The Matoran said. Ruby and Takua were immediately anxious about him. He seemed to have a concentrated expression as if he were focusing on something.
"I am Kapura. Are you the Makuta?" he asked.
Ruby felt a little creeped out. Though she had heard of it before she wasn't sure who or what it was.
"I don't know what that is." Ruby answered.
"If you don't mind me asking, what is the Makuta?" Kapura stayed silent for a moment as he paced
"If neither of you know what the Makuta is, I believe you are not it. That is good." Kapura began.
"Jaller says I should be careful of the Makuta when I am in the forest. He says the Makuta is everywhere."
"I think I know why." Takua muttered to himself looking around at the burnt foliage. The thought of Makuta being powerful enough to do this was unnerving enough but the idea of him being everywhere on the island made the sentiment only grow worse.
"He means Rahi. Monsters. Things you can see." Kapura said. Takua and Ruby were about to breathe a collective sigh of release until Kapura spoke again.
"But I know the Makuta is here now, in these burnt trees, and in the soil. All of these things were destroyed by the Makuta, but the Makuta never left them. That is how the Makuta becomes strong. That is what the Makuta does. He destroys things." Kapura explained. Takua gulped.
"That's horrible." Ruby said. She looked around the charred forest. Her heart sank at the cruelty of her unseen foe that was Makuta.
"I think the forest looks very beautiful this way too." Kapura said. Ruby and Takua looked at Kapura with a stunned and confused look.
"You think this looks beautiful?" Takua asks. Kapura nods.
"Yes, and when it burned, you could see all the fires perform their Great Takara all the way to the sea, and it was very beautiful." he said. This made both Ruby and Takua uncomfortable about the pacing Ta-Matoran.
"Then what are you doing out here then if you know Makuta is still here?" Ruby asked.
"I am practicing." Kapura answered with a smile.
"Practicing what?" Ruby asked.
"Vakama says that even though I am slow, I may be faster than all the others, and travel very far. He says I must practice. Jala says I am being silly." Kapura said. He continued to pace, focused on his practice.
"Do you still practice?" Ruby asked Kapura.
"Yes, I practice often." he replied. Ruby felt a little more at ease but still wary of the strange Kapura. Takua stepped closer to Kapura
"If you don't mind me asking, can you please tell us where we are? We're trying to get to Ta-Koro." he asked. Kapura continued to focus on his pacing.
"You are where you are," Kapura began. "If I practice, I can be where I am not. I think I can feel it. It is hot here where I am, but where I am not is cold, and I think I can feel it. I must practice more. The island has many places to visit. I want to see all of them. But the others do not like to travel. Mata Nui is very big. Vakama says that in the beginning of time, Mata Nui fell from the sky, and landed here. The Makuta came after him and made him fall asleep, and sent his monsters out across the world to control it, and destroy its beautiful things, and to make the Matoran his slaves."
Ruby and Takua stayed silent. They already knew this but Ruby was starting to worry about Kapura. He seemed… off to her.
"Vakama told us to wait for more creatures to fall from the sky, who will save us. I think one of them landed on the beach. I saw it fall, when I was practicing before. However, the creature that accompanied Toa was odd."
Ruby's face lightened up.
"Wait, what creature? You mean, someone like me?" Ruby asked
"Yes," Kapura began. "The Epi-Toa was a lot like you but she was taller, wore brown armor, and when enraged her eyes would turn red and her hair would burn like fire."
Ruby recognized who that was. Hope and joy soared within her heart.
"Yang." Ruby whispered to herself.
"What else can you tell us about her? What about Tahu?" Takua asked.
"Vakama knows more. You should ask him. He lives in Ta-Koro." Kapura replied.
"Can you tell us where that is?" Takua asked.
"Not far, just ahead of me." Kapura answered. Ruby then used her semblance, Petal Burst, and ran up to Kapura who didn't react to Ruby as she hugged him.
"Thank you." Ruby said. She then put down Kapura and grabbed Takua using Petal Burst again as they sped up leaving behind a flurry of red and blue rose petals.
Kapura was then launched into the air by fire that shot out from behind him. Kapura paused. He turned. Kapura saw the scorch marks. He lowered and shook his head.
"I must practice more."
Ruby and Takua found themselves at the entrance to Ta-Koro. It was bigger than Ruby expected. The guards gave a simple warning about the Rahi and then allowed the pair to pass. The bridge was under the lava so they entered a room and inside were various Ta-Matoran surrounding a carving of the island with six colored crystals on specific points on the island. At the head of the table sat Jaller as he conversed with several advisors.
"We need to send a reconnaissance team to Ga-Koro at once. If the village has fallen, then we need to act now." one advisor said.
"And risk weakening Ta-Koro? We need to keep the village secure." declared another.
"We can't wait either. The situation is bad and it will only get worse." another advisor said.
They all turn to Jaller.
"Captain, what do we do?" one of the advisors asked. Jaller stayed silent. He looked at the map as he contemplated, deep in thought. He closed his eyes and then he spoke.
"Normally I'd say to hold back but, given that the Toa are here, we may not have to do anything, I don't like it but it's the only course of action we can take right now. If we don't hear anything in three days, we send a reconnaissance team. Understood?" Jaller answered. The advisors nodded their approval and Jaller dismissed them. Two of them passed Takua and Ruby while the third went into another room. Ruby and Takua entered the chamber.
"There are never good enough warriors to go against the Rahi these days." Jaller sighed. The Ta-Matoran heard the sound of footsteps behind him and turned to see Ruby and Takua. The pair pause. Jaller stares at them with his arms crossed.. Ruby waves her hand.
"Hi" Ruby says.
"Hi" Jaller replies. The captain continues to look at them with a contemplative expression. Then he smirks.
"You two look stout, you should consider a career in the guard. Mata Nui knows we need the help." Jaller said.
"Thanks, but we're just passing through at the moment." Takua replied.
"Suit yourselves. Though I hope you two consider joining soon. Any help we can get is much appreciated." Jaller said.
"Any reason why Mr…?" Ruby asked. Jaller sighed.
"Oh forgot my manners. Let me start from the beginning. My name is Jaller, Captain of the Ta-Koro Guard. While we have the largest militia on the island, we also rely on and cooperate with the defenders of the other villages. For the longest time, I knew the Rahi were getting stronger but no one on the island, save the Turaga, believed me until the Rahi overran the Tren Krom redoubt a few years ago." Jaller said.
"That's horrible, why didn't the Turaga take your advice?" Ruby asked.
"The Turaga are elders and while they lead the villages, it's up to the Matoran to create change. I guess sometimes people don't see a threat or acknowledge it until it's too late. I lost a lot of good men at the redoubt when it was attacked and that's when things started to change. Then Tahu and his friend arrived and now we know why the Rahi are on the move. Vakama says that Tahu will save us but I don't think we should put all of our faith in him. You can't have too much security."
"As long as it's within reason. Though I get defending yourselves from the Rahi." Ruby said in a nervous tone.
"The Rahi are Makuta servants, horrible beasts. Some soar through the sky, others stalk the ground, and some are said to guard their master himself in his lair. Our many battles scourged the island." Jaller said, looking out to the charred forest with Ruby and Takua following suit. Small traces of green saplings were near the forest edge.
"They pushed us back to our home at this point and they won't stop until we're nothing but a scattered and divided people. However, we're Ta-Matoran and we won't go quietly into the night Makuta so desires to plunge us into. Like I said before, if you change your minds, the Guard would be glad to have you." Jaller said. He turned back to his map. Ruby then looked outside and saw the bridge up outside.
"Thanks, but we're just looking for Vakama right now." Ruby said.
"Very well, Ta-Koro's just over the bridge." The captain replied
"Anything else we should know about Ta-Koro." Takua asked. Jaller chuckled.
"Come on, you should have heard of it. Ta-Koro's the home of the Ta-Matornan in the Shadow of the Mangai Volcano. Most are farmers work the lava fields though you'll find a few lava surfers as you pass by." Jaller said.
"Sorry, my memory's been a blur for a while. I appreciate the help though. We'll keep the offer in mind." Takua said. He and Ruby both left as Jaller turned back inside. Jaller sighed
"Hopefully, you don't get booted back out again." Jaller muttered to himself.
Ruby and Takua passed over the bridge. Some Ta-Matoran would pass by and would occasionally give a brief glare at Takua. By the time they reached the city itself. The village was buzzing with activity. One Matoran was cleaning a circular structure while a group of Ta-Matoran danced near a guarded tunnel in the back. Takua and Ruby followed Jaller's direction and made their way to the Turaga's hut.
"Hey!" a Ta-Matoran called. Ruby and Takua were approached by the villager with a metal board in his hand. He gave it to Takua.
"Here's the lava board you asked me to hang on for you." he said.
"Thanks?" Takua said unsurely. The Ta-Matoran then left smiling. Takua put away the board in his backpack. The two arrived at Vakama's hut and were about to enter but Takua noticed something and looked to an abandoned hut with the word "Evicted" written in Matoran. Takua stared for a brief moment as Ruby walked in. The Ta-Matoran shook his head before joining his human companion in the hut. Vakama tended to the sacred flame inside and stared intently into the fire. Vakama paused, sensing their arrival. He turned and saw the duo. The Turaga smiled.
"Welcome, I am Turaga Vakama. Please, sit and be well." Vakama said.
He stepped away from the flame and sat in front of his two.
"You have found your way back after all and not alone I see." Vakama said, turning to look at Ruby. The silver-eyed huntress simply waved back.
"Hi, I'm Ruby and this Takua." Ruby said before patting Takua on the back. Vakama smiled and looked back at Takua.
"I know him well." he said as he looked toward the Ta-Matoran
"You are brave. While many have forgotten, there are still those who's temper still boils as hot as the magma of the Mangai we live in." the Turaga of Fire told the Ta-Matoran. He turned to the flame.
"However, you may find that the Matoran of Ta-Koro are more pleasant in this first hour of hope. For at last, Tahu has finally come to find the Great Kanohi and liberate the island alongside his fellow Toa. It was Jaller who found him during his hunt in a trap meant for the Rahi and it seems he too is not alone." Vakama explained.
As the Turaga spoke, the fire behind him seemed to dance in a way that seemed to show what happened. Ruby saw this as well and saw her sister in the flames as well. Her eyes widened in recognition.
"Did they ever visit the village?" Ruby asked.
Vakama nodded.
"Indeed, Tahu learned of his quest and the Sun Dragon sought knowledge that I do not have. The answers she sought, dear Child, lay high atop the snow covered cap of Mt. Ihu in Ko-Koro, the village of Ice. After this, they left to find the masks together. What happened next, I cannot say." he replied.
Takua then raised his hand.
"Yes, Takua." Vakama asked.
"I know this may seem a bit rude of me but, I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about who I was? My memory is a little fuzzy and, I uhh… I can't seem to remember anything after meeting Ruby aside from the fact that I used to live here. Could you please tell me who I was or who I am?" Takua asked
"Come now, surely you remember what drove you from us. Many saw your adventurous nature as neglectful and you were forced from your home." Vakama said.
Takua's eyes widened and then lowered at what the Turaga meant by his words. He then remembered the hut he saw and began to recall what happened.
"In other words, I was banished." Takua said.
Vakama nodded solemnly, earning a sigh from Takua.
"I guess I'm not welcome here, am I?" Takua remarked.
"Not by all, but many have moved on and some have even forgotten in this time of hope. I, on the other hand, believe that leaving was part of your destiny." Vakama said.
"So you agreed with their decision?" Takua asked with confusion, worry, and anger. Vakama chuckled.
"Far from it. Ta-Koro is the home of all Ta-Matoran and everyone here has a destiny just as you do. Yours lies beyond our village. I wonder, have you also forgotten how you returned my fire staff and helped restore the lava fields from which our food comes as farmers tend to their crops?" Vakama began.
"Your adventurous nature was always known to me. What others saw as neglect was fulfillment of your duty. I knew you were adventurous from the moment you stepped onto the shores of this island and I sought to foster and care for it. You and Jaller were different from the rest. He is courageous, always seeking unity with the other Koros and loyal in his duty. You were adventurous. Your actions sowed the seeds of unity, tended to their growth through your duty, and, just as Jaller will carve the path to his, you will one day reap the harvest of your destiny."
The Turaga's words were not what Takua expected to hear as his masked face's expression softened.. He didn't know why but the more he thought about it, the greater the sense of familiarity grew. It was hazy but he slowly recalled bits and pieces of these previous travels across the island. Travels he undertook before he met Ruby. It wasn't clear but one thing to the Ta-Matoranwas. Vakama was telling the truth. He didn't know why but every word that came from the Turaga of Fire's mouthpiece was genuine and honest. He felt relieved by what he learned. Knowing that he had been banished was not what Takua wanted to hear but he took comfort in the fact that despite what happened, there were those who still welcomed him and that he had friends in high places.
"Thank you, Turaga." Takua said with a bow and smile. Vakama bowed his head.
"You are most welcome, Takua." he replied.
Ruby smiled as she watched the moment unfold. It was like she was watching a father comforting his son in her eyes and she recalled a similar moment with her father. The Turaga then turned to Ruby.
"You are fortunate to have been found by such a good friend. While Mata Nui may be a paradise. The island also contains many hidden perils and the shadow of Makuta himself looms over and torments us all while his brother remains in slumber. I suggest that you be wary in your travels and stay with Takua while you travel." Vakama stated.
"I will do my best." Ruby answered.
The Turaga smiled.
"I know you will." he said.
"Vakama," Ruby began. She paused, collecting her thoughts before speaking again.
"You called my sister Sun Dragon. That's not a nickname most people know outside of my family. How do you know it? And why did you call me 'child'."
Vakama knew this would be asked. He and the Turaga had grown used to referring to the Epi-Toa by their prophesied titles rather than their actual names. He could not tell Ruby why as it was not his place to say. He could however lead her in the right direction.
"I apologize if my use of the word has offended you. I merely use an abbreviated form of your honorific title. For centuries the Matorna have referred to Epi-Toa for ages, through honorifics rather than their names."
"Then what is my full honorific?" Ruby asked.
"I cannot say. However, you will hear it often in your travels and you will learn its full title in due time. Though the answers you seek also lie at Ko-Koro near the top of Mt. Ihu." Vakama said.
"Okay, but I think it would be better if you called me by my name until I figure this out, if that's alright." Ruby said
"Very well." Vakama replied
Takua didn't speak but now he felt that the Turaga wasn't being completely forward with Ruby. Yes, her title was an honorific but he deliberately avoided part of the question. Something wasn't right and he wondered why someone so honest and upfront would deliberately leave out such details.
It was then that the fire erupted and grew larger and grabbed the attention of everyone in the hut.
"Mata Nui!" Vakama exclaimed. The Turaga got up and rushed to the flames to tend to it. He then turned to Ruby and Takua.
"I apologize but it seems that the sacred flame is in turmoil. I must know what it will say." Vakama said.
Ruby and Takua looked at each other; astounded by the flame's sudden increase in intensity.
"We will leave you be then. Thank you for your hospitality, Turaga Vakama." Takua said.
"You are welcome. May Tahu protect you both." Vakama replied.
The two travelers then left the hut.
"Well… that was something." Ruby said.
"Yeah, it was. So, what now?" Takua asked.
"Well, the Turaga said Yang went with Tahu to find the masks. Maybe we can start looking for them. We've already been through the charred forest and been to Ta-Koro and we would have met Yang in Ga-Koro during my recovery. So, we need to start somewhere." Ruby said.
Takua had a thought as he remembered something from back at Ga-Koro Nokama mentioned.
"I think I know where." said the Ta-Matoran.
Blake and Lewa climbed the tree and reached one of the branches that allowed for stable footing. The pair had gotten up early in the morning. The two had just recovered Lewa's Kakama yesterday and had spent a good twenty minutes finding a place to take off. The moment excited Lewa which contrasted with Blake's rather nervous demeanor. She had never done something quite like this before. Though she gained that experience swinging with Gambol Shroud.
"Come on, Blake. Quick speed to the branch. You'll love this." Lewa called to Blake as she continued to climb.
"Correct me if I'm wrong but last time I checked, I neither where the mask of levitation or have control over air to make my climb faster." Blake remarked.
Lewa then waved hand and a pair of vines lowered to Blake.
"Then allow me to help." Lewa answered.
The vines lowered further until they were at Blake's side. The cat Faunus grabbed the vines and began to climb them. However, one of the vines began to wrap around her waist and Blake was quickly lifted up to the branch. The vines then place her down next to Lewa who smiled.
"There you go. Now, time to guide-teach you some vine-swinging." Lewa said.
"Are you sure about this? We still have four more masks to find." Blake replied.
Lewa chuckled.
"Haha, no need to worry. That's part of the fun. By vine-swinging, we'll traverse the Wahi at a faster rate and find the masks quicker. A happy-plan if you ask me." he said.
"Good point. So, how do we start?" Blake asked.
Lewa walked closer to Blake and lowered himself to eye level and pointed.
"You see that vine there?" asked the Toa of Air.
Blake nodded.
"Good, you are going to take it, step back, and with a running start, quick-leap off the branch with it. From there, grab-catch the nearest vine and repeat. Make sure to lean left or right if you want to turn and lean into the next vine and the branch you land on. Okay?" Lewa instructed.
"Okay." Blake answered.
Lewa then grabbed his vine and stepped back
"Now don't ever-fret. I will be near-close by if you need help. Do not hesitate to call for me if you need it." he said.
With that, Lewa ran forward and leapt from the branch, holding onto his vine until he grabbed another. Then another, and another, and another, and another before landing on another branch close by. The Toa turned around.
"Let's try-start with something simple. Vine-swing to this branch with what I taught you." Lewa said.
Blake then looked at the vine Lewa pointed to earlier and stepped back. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them. She ran for the edge and like Lewa, leapt forward with her grip firmly on the vine. As she swung she spotted another vine and used her forward momentum to reach it. She let go of her current vine and leapt to the next one. She did this again, and again, and again, and again. She then reached the branch and got her feet on but the vine started to swing back. Her feet began to drag away from the branch but before she slipped off, she felt a hand on her back pulling her back to the branch. She turned to see Lewa gently lead her back and place her feat next to him.
"Good start, just be sure to lean more into the branch than the vine. It will give you an easy-better time landing." Lewa commented.
"Got it." Blake answered.
Lewa smiled.
"Now, let's try this again. This time, follow me. It's time to quick-soar." Lewa declared.
His enthusiasm was contagious. Blake couldn't help but smile at the Toa's personality. The two grabbed a vine and leapt from the branch.
Though much more experienced, Lewa stayed by Blake's side. She would occasionally look back and see him swinging beside her and watch his form as he leapt from vine to vine. Lewa would also do the same in turn and provide tips to improve her form.
The two began to swing on the vines as if they were gliding through the air..
It was then that Lewa had an idea.
"Blake, I want to show you something. Follow my lead." Lewa said. Using his power of the air, Lewa and Blake swung fast and soon let go of their vines. The momentum carried them skyward through a hole in the jungle's thick arboreal canopy and Blake and Lewa found themselves high in the air with the jungle below and growing smaller.
"Grab-catch my hand and don't let go." Lewa ordered.
Blake looked at Lewa and his outstretched hand. She did as he said and grabbed hold. Lewa then activated his Kanohi Miru and the pair slowed down and began to hover in the air. What Blake saw was nothing short of beautiful. Before was the island of Mata Nui. She could see past the Mangai volcano and even was able to peer into the desert. She looked to her left and right and saw as far as the shores of the island and the golden beaches they encompassed.
"Ever-beautiful, isn't it?" Lewa said
Blake did not reply, she was entranced by the splendor that was the island of Mata Nui. Lewa looked and saw Blake transfixed on the sight before them. He had become rather curious about her. She was open to try new things yet said very little about her past. He wondered how he could get her to open up about herself. While the vine-swinging was a brilliant way to find the Kanohi as he had originally planned, he also hoped that she would be able to be honest with him. He hoped that she would open.
"Blake." Lewa said.
She looked at him.
"Yeah?" Blake asked.
"What is your world like?" asked the Toa of Air.
"I have no memory of who I was or where I came from but, do you still remember?" Lewa asked.
"Yes." Blake replied.
"What is it like?" the Toa said.
Blake paused. She knew this would happen sooner or later but now that she was asked the question, she was at a loss for words. So, instead of speaking from her mind. She spoke from a place that, for many years, she kept silent.
"Remnant is… an amazing place. It's not perfect by any means. We have our own monsters to fight. We call them Grimm. They're creatures that come in different shapes and sizes and feed on negative emotions like wrath, fear, lust, and greed and they destroy anyone and anything in their path" Blake said.
"These dark-bad creatures sound like the Rahi." Lewa replied.
"I suppose so, but these creatures aren't forced to destroy, they choose to do so. Wherever the Grimm go, death is all they leave behind." Blake continued.
"Do you have a way to fight them?" the Toa of Air asked.
"Yes, we're called huntsmen, or in our case huntresses. It's our job to fight the Grimm with a mineral called dust. Think of it as a crystalized element like fire, water, or air." Blake answered.
"I see, and what about you? Why did you want to take up this huntress position?" Lewa asked
Blake paused again with a pained expression that Lewa soon noticed.
"If you don't feel like give-sharing that is alright. All I want is to know the truth no matter how little you have to tell." the Toa said.
Blake nodded.
"I used to be part of a group that hurt people. They hurt people because people hurt us and we wanted to change that. We used to not hurt people but things changed and we did. At first we hurt them indirectly by stealing and destroying things like railways and resources. But then, we started hurting them directly." Blake said in a regretful tone.
Lewa was surprised by her words. He felt that Blake's story would be complicated but he never could have imagined her as someone to take revenge.
"You know, the worst part of it all was that it actually worked but the changes never came because of respect but out of fear. So, I left. I wanted change but I didn't want to become the thing we were fighting against." Blake finished.
"If you don't mind me asking, why did people hurt you?" Lewa asked.
Blake looked away with worry and dread. She knew Lewa meant well but she didn't feel ready to say it just yet. Lewa didn't need to ask to know what she meant.
"I see, when you are brave-ready Blake, you can tell me." Lewa said.
Blake smiled at his understanding.
"Thanks." she said.
Lewa smiled back.
"Now, let's continue our search for those masks. But before we do, grip-tight to me." he said.
"Why?" Blake asked while holding onto the smiling Toa.
"Because we're about to quick-drop." Lewa said.
Lewa deactivated the Kanohi Miru as Blake's eyes widened.
"Wait, what?"
The two held onto each other as they descended in free fall. Lewa was having the time of his life as Blake tried to formulate a land strategy. She instinctively went for her weapon and attempted to unsheathe the sword of Gambol Shroud and transform it into its sickle/pistol form but the Toa of Air dissuaded her.
Lewa opened a free hand as they fell through the hole they flew out of and grabbed the nearest vine and swung back through the foliage. The two traveled at high speeds and Blake couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement at Lewa's antics. Lewa then looked at Blake.
"Are you star-ready?" he asked.
Blake nodded.
"Then grab a vine and start swinging." Lewa joyfully said.
The Toa let go of Blake who immediately grabbed a vine and began to swing alongside the Toa of Air. The speed was so fast that Blake began to rely on instinct and followed a strange breeze that seemed to lead her to the next vine and swing to the next one.
Lewa saw Blake swing from vine to vine and was impressed at how fast she had learned.
"Not even a day's worth of training and you swing like a vines-man." Lewa praised.
"Really?" Blake asked.
"Yeah." Lewa said.
Blake laughed and Lewa with him as they swung. The laughter was cut short by a buzzing sound. Blake looked ahead and saw the sound's source.
"Lewa, look out!" Blake shouted.
Her warning came too late as the carefree Toa rammed into the massive Nui-Rama as it knocked off his mask. Blake gasped and turned around. Pulling out Gambol Shroud, she converted it into its sickle/pistol form and tossed it to a nearby branch. Holding onto the ribbon attached to it, the weapon wrapped around the branch like a rope and grappling hook and pulled on the ribbon.
Blake soared in the direction of the Miru and grabbed it and landed on the ground. She turned toward Lewa and ran toward the falling, unconscious Toa. As she approached, she began to run faster upon seeing the sight of the open jaws of a Muaka waiting to maul the Toa of Air. Little did she or the Rahi know that under their feet, ground began to crack and shake.
Vakama tended to the sacred flame. Fueling it with coal and wood so that he could see what Mata Nui wanted to show. Though he slept, the Turaga knew that visions were one of the few ways that Mata Nui could aid them.
"Mata Nui" Vakama began.
"Please, what is it that you wish to show me? I have stared into the flame and yet the vision remains clouded. What more can I do to see? What lies ahead for us?" he prayed.
Vakama stood still with only the crackle of the flame to provide sound in the deafening. The head of his firestaff began to glow as Vakama lowered the tip of his staff toward the fire and moved toward the flame.
"What do you want me to see?"
Vakama's staff touched the edge of the sacred flame and it erupted as the force of the blast pushed Vakama back and down to his back and separating him from his firestaff. Vakama crawled toward the flames and grabbed his staff again to pull himself up. The Turaga looked into the flame and was horrified by what he saw.
The twins awoke and let out their dreaded roar as their legions swarmed the island of Mata Nui and left to terrorize the world beyond. Cities burned, people drowned, and towns were buried in their wake.
The army of shadows emerge from their slumber in the land of their master and leading their unholy spawn, laid waste to a gothic building where a Dragon Rahi dueled with a winged black beast. The leaders marched on the cities and towns nearby as their troops feasted on all.
The Toa, Ruby, and her friends were joined by other warriors who stood in defiance of a fallen Epi-Toa of Fire as she stood guard to defend those that sought to free their imprisoned masters.
The mask of the seventh Toa was brought to him by the one who would find the warrior of legend. The seventh Toa himself then emerged, did battle with the master of shadows, and slew him in combat. The cosmos converged as a being made of stars gathered the relics and held them towards the rift to bend the world to his will while Ruby rushed to stop him.
Then, worst of all, was the symbol of a being standing tall and proud with arms stretched in a show of his might. The symbol was then engraved on a golden mask, a living mask, that only those IT deemed worthy could bear and pay its tragic price for such an act. A masked traveled that was loved, respected, and feared by all beings in the universe. This mask could only mean one thing.
Vakama, the Turaga of Ta-Koro, filled with hope, horror, amazement, and dread, spoke only one word feared and hoped for as much as the mask he saw in the vision, one word that said it all.
"Ignition"
A/N: With that, we officially conclude the Arrival Arce. Wow, this was a long chapter to write. So, let's get started with the update. First off, this will potentially be the last upload for this story for the year. Emphasis on potentially depending on how fast I can complete the next arc. Also, I'm reworking how this story will be as the last section of this chapter clearly indicates. The ending for Part 1 is already set in stone for the most part and I can't wait to show you all what happens.
As for Part 2 onwards, that's a different story. Some things are set but not completely. Originally, I was going to go through the main story and do potentially 7 to 8 parts for the whole thing but now I've decided to keep it down to the original four to three stories I had planned with a couple of tie-ins/spin-offs I have in mind. I can't tell you much but I can point you in the right direction with the current plan for the series. Sometime during the writing or after I complete Part 2, I will do a trilogy focusing on another team of huntsmen we all know and love as they team up with other members of the Matoran universe and go on a quest of their own. Plus, someone we all know, but some love continues her mission at Beacon but this time, for a different employer.
Anyway, the first person to DM me and answer who and what these hints pertain to correctly, I will personally DM back a response to them about the details of the spin-offs/tie-ins. Have fun guessing.
Until then, live life to the fullest and God bless you.
