Chapter Forty One

With our ascension up the mountain the air started to thin making it more difficult to breathe. As was predicted things were starting to get a bit chillier the further up we went with the wind nipping my cheeks. Things were further complicated as our traverse was impeded by thick woodland and brush, and it was not until coming across a stream running down the mountain did things become somewhat easier. We traded getting torn up by brush for climbing over rocks and the occasional slip on the wet rocks. There was little chatter amongst us accompanied by the rushing water and chirping birds, but it was overall quiet giving myself some time to collect my thoughts and articulate a strategy for when we got to the other side.

Before I knew it we had reached the source of the stream and our easy goings had come to an end once again. If we wished to traverse any further we would require the use of our climbing gear. I turned back to see Jeanne and Mashu had stopped behind me now looking at me. Looking past them I saw how much distance we had covered, with the roman camps and fortifications being nothing but a blur at this point. The sun was now high up in the sky indicating it was somewhere around noon, my watch did me little good as it was still set to East coast time.

"Looks like from here on out we'll be climbing" I said to the others.

"Is there really no other way around?" Jeanne inquired.

"Not unless you were planning on tunneling through the mountain." I said, causing a sigh to escape Jeanne's lips. "If it was that easy to traverse, the enemy would have already done so by now." I added.

"I know, I know." Jeanne said. "It's just that I've never done any rock climbing before so I'm not too thrilled about it." Jeanne said.

"Me neither." Mashu added.

"That's to be expected, but this shouldn't be too challenging." I said.

"Do you do a lot of rock climbing?" Jeanne asked.

"Not very often." I replied.

"That's not very reassuring." Jeanne murmured.

"I'll be taking the lead." Scathach said from behind me. "I'll be setting up the anchors ahead of you all, so as long as your safety harnesses are securely fastened you should have nothing to worry about. All you need to do is focus on your footing and what you're grabbing onto." Scathach explained.

"Lancer's right, you'll be fine so long as your harness is secure." I nodded my head. "If anything happens Lancer and I will be there to support you." I reassured them.

"If anything does happen I should be able to pull to safety." Scathach said.

"Thankfully nobody has on any heavy armor or weapons so I should be able to assist if needed." I added. "So if there's nothing else, pull out your gear and get ready." I said and Jeanne and Mashu nodded their heads. The four of us proceeded with taking our climbing gear out from our backpacks and got kitted up.

With everyone harnesses fastened on, there was a safety check just to be sure they were secured properly. Next up we ran our ropes through our harnesses and carabiners. There was one last safety check to make sure everything was done properly, since the last thing any of us needed was too plummet to our deaths or at least that was the last thing I needed since I assumed the others would be fine.

"Alright I'll head on up first, I'll let you know when to start following." Scathach instructed. We watched as Scathach walked up to the rock wall and she reached up grabbing onto a crevice in the wall. Using that leverage she pulled herself up and found her footing on some rocks, before reaching up and grabbing on hold to the next rock. Scathach found her footing and stepped up and proceeded to climb, dragging the rope behind her as she made her way up. Meanwhile the three of us stood at the bottom watching and waiting for the signal.

"It seems like this too comes natural to her." Jeanne murmured, sounding almost envious, as she watched on as Scathach climbed almost at the halfway point now. As she climbed she placed anchors along the route to secure the rope line and would need to be taken out by whoever went last.

"Just don't let her hear you say that, otherwise it might go to her head." I joked which earned me a soft chuckle from Jeanne. "Although this shouldn't be too difficult of a climb." Or so I hoped.

"Who's going next?" Mashu asked, looking at me.

"Well Lancer and I are the only ones with any climbing experience, so it might be best for you two to go on up first and I'll go last to monitor things from down here." I explained. To be honest though I just wanted to get it over with, but since neither Jeanne or Mashu had experience I shouldn't make them go up last. "Although I don't think either one of you would get hurt if you fell due to your servant status." I inquired which caused both of them to shake their heads in response.

"Still I'd rather not fall if possible." Jeanne pointed out.

"I think it would still hurt a lot even if we are servants." Mashu reminded me.

"No, No you're right. I didn't mean to imply it wouldn't, I just…." I managed to get out before an interruption was thrown down on top of me.

"Would you ladies quit fretting and hurry up and start climbing. We're wasting daylight." Scathach called down to us. Looking up we saw that Scathach was nearing the top.

"She's sure eager to get a move on." Jeanne said.

"Well she's right, we're on the clock so it's best not to dally." I said. "You wouldn't want to be climbing the side of the mountain in the dark would you?" I asked and both shook their heads in response. "Right then, I'm no expert in rock climbing, but I'll give you a quick crash course on what to do. Basically it's all in your footing, you want to use the balls of your feet most of the time when climbing, it's like climbing a ladder. Then it's all about pushing and pulling against the rock while trying to apply the right amount of pressure. You'll also want to make sure your weight is evenly balanced amongst your centers of contact on the wall, which is where your feet and hands are placed." I explained which earned me looks of bewilderment. "Which if none of that makes any sense, what I'm trying to get at is you don't want to have more weight on one side of your body over the other." I clarified. "So with all that said you'll want to find places that you can grip onto with your feet or hands, any crevices, cracks in the wall, or protruding rocks. Lancer should have set the rope up along the path she used, so just follow that if worse comes to worse." I said, wrapping up my hap hastily explanation.

"I think I understood." Mashu murmured.

"Seems easy enough." Jeanne commented.

"Well I'm trying to make it a lot more simpler than it is, but we don't have time for me to try and go more in depth nor do I think I'm really qualified to go in depth." I admitted. "But if anything bad happens just stay calm, you have the anchors in place and Lancer or I will guide you back to safety." I reassured them. Or worse case scenario I'll catch them, and hopefully not hurt myself in the process, but I doubt that will happen.

"Thanks Chris, I'm sure everything will work out just fine." Jeanne smiled.

"All that's left is to decide who wants to go up first." I said. For a moment I thought maybe we'd have to do rock paper scissors, but that wasn't the case.

"I'll go first." Jeanne volunteered, taking no time at all to decide.

"Go ahead then." I stepped to the side. Jeanne walked up beside me looking up at the rock wall with a determined look in her eyes. Spotting a protruding rock sticking out of the rock wall she reached up and grasped it and stepped up onto another rock before pulling herself upwards using the next rock. At first things seemed to be going fine before stumbling back down. Mashu and I were both there to catch her from falling.

"Are you alright?" I asked helping Jeanne upright.

"Yeah I'm fine, I just lost my footing that's all." Jeanne brushed it off.

"Alright then, back up you go." I waved her on. Undeterred she made her way back up to the wall and grabbed onto the protruding rock again and more wary of her footing, choosing a different place for her footing. With a different foothold this time she pushed herself up and reached up to grab onto the next rock. Mashu and I watched as she slowly climbed her way upwards following the route Scathach had set the anchored rope. When she was a quarter of the way up I turned to Mashu giving her the go ahead.

"Wish me luck." Mashu said.

"Just be careful and you'll be fine." I reassured her.

"Alright, well here goes." Mashu reached up grabbing ahold of one of the rocks Jeanne had used earlier and stepped up with her feet reaching up for the next place to grab onto. Once she had a good grip on the rock up above with arms straight, she proceeded to find her footing and using the inside edge of her shoe managed to get leverage onto the rock face. It was a good thing she wasn't wearing her armor because there's no way she'd be able to get any traction with those armored horrible boots. I stood behind her with my hand on her shoulder to support her just in case, but she ended up not needing my help in the end. Both Mashu and Jeanne were doing good for their first time rock climbing, I had expected them to make a few mistakes like trying to pull themselves up by their arms but I guess my short lesson helped some. Now all that was left to do was for me to climb up last and not break my neck.

I decided it would be easier for me to just follow the same path as everyone else did, or at least make the attempt too. It should be easy enough to follow given the anchors Scathach placed were the route everyone had taken. That also meant since I was the last one up it was my responsibility to take the anchors out. Well no point dwelling on the matter. I looked for a place to grab onto and upon finding one, I reached up and grabbed onto one of the jagged rocks protruding from the wall and stepped up. With a solid foothold I looked around finding a place to grab onto. A crevice in the rock proved ample enough to get a good grip and I stepped up once more. I kept this pace going before reaching one of the first anchors Scathach had set up. I found the first cam wedged in between a crack in the rock wall and I unclipped the rope from the anchor. Reaching inside the crack I found my grip on the cam and pulled the trigger. The cam lobes contracted and its grip loosened, but that still didn't mean it would just slip right on out. I had to jimmy the cam back and forth for several moments before it finally popped out and I could return it to my harness. Looking up I saw I still had a long way to go before I reached the top. One cam down, only several more to go. A sigh escaped before carrying on along the route as I had been doing.

Having finally reached the last anchor I stopped to take a breather before looking over my shoulder to take a gander at how far we had come so far. Down below I saw the thick forests coating the mountain side and further down I could vaguely make out what looked like Nero's encampment. Up above the sun was watching over me as it roasted me alive on the side of this mountain. Damn, it's already mid day? Where did the time go? I checked my watch but that was pointless since it was still adjusted for the time back at home. Returning my gaze back up wards I saw we still had a ways to go before conquering this mountain, and there were still more mountains to overcome. Well best get this anchor out and reach the others so we could carry on. Scathach should have fastened the rope at the top so I won't just fall to my doom when I take out this anchor. Pulling the trigger on this cam with a little bit of shimmying got it out and returned to my harness. I half expected the rope to give in at that moment, Scathach finally seeing an opportunity to take me out without any blame falling on her. Thankfully both Mashu and Jeanne were both up there to keep her from carrying out her sinister plot, so I was safe from this time. I looked around for where to go next and soon my hand found its way into a crevice allowing me to look for a place to step up too.

This process repeated itself several times until I found myself nearing the top. Grabbing onto a rock jutting out from the wall my gaze wandered trying to find a place for my footing. How on earth did those three make it past this part? I looked down and around for any place I could step up onto, and there wasn't much in the room of leverage. I reached out with my foot for a small slant trying to edge against but as I attempted to step up I found my footing slip swinging back. Back where I started I guess my only other option was to try and smear for a foothold. I could make out some better footholds further up so using smearing to get to them should work. Taking a step up I pressed against the rock wall using a third of my shoe for friction from the tip down, keeping my heel low in the process. With more progress now made than I had in the past few minutes I looked for the next place for a handhold. Finding a place I extended out my arm grasping for it before getting ahold of it, and with my other foot stepped up using smearing for a foothold again. I don't think smearing was intended to be used this way, but I didn't have much of a choice in the matter with no defined footholds to use. Using my method of smearing against the wall whilst grabbing onto any place I could hold onto I pressed onwards until finally coming upon some proper footholds. Now with more proper footing I took this moment to see how much further I had left to go and saw that I was nearing the end, at least for this stretch of the mountain. I stepped up and carried onwards and upwards towards my goal as I ascended the overhang. Only a little further and I could catch a breather finally. Reaching up to the next leverage point I stuck my hand into a crevice in the rock face followed as I made my way up the overhang. Now I found myself at an angle with gravity playing more of an effect as it tried to drag me straight down, but I carried on. Almost there I could hear Mashu and Jeanne talking amongst themselves, just had to figure out where I was gonna get a foothold now. Looking around I found myself in another drought for leverage points. There were some rocks jutting out of the wall over on my left, but those weren't really within my reach. I wondered if I could reach out and use those as a foothold, but I know you're usually supposed to keep your feet directly below you. Again though I didn't have really many options and the smearing had worked before, so I was sure this would work as well. Stretching my leg out I made the attempt at trying to get a grip on the rock, and it took a few tries but eventually I got it. With one foot over on the ledge and the other beneath me I proceeded to swing my other leg over so now I had both legs over. Now all I had to do was grab onto the ledge and pull myself up. Extending my hand out I reached for the ledge gracing the ledge with my fingertips before grabbing hold of it. Working my arms I began pulling myself up over the edge until the others came into view and I saw them talking amongst themselves. I prepared to call out to them but before getting a chance to do so I felt my feet slipping. Unable to react in time, my feet slipped off the rocks and were now dangling beneath me.

"Woah!" I exclaimed as I began to panic. Already finding myself in a precarious situation, my elbows provided the only contact. I soon began slipping back as gravity pulled me down with my fingernails scraping the rock surface trying to grip onto anything I possibly could. My attempts were all but in vain as the rest of my body slipped back over the edge leaving me hanging on for dear life. Gravel bounced off my head from the ledge as I was on the verge of losing my grip entirely.

"Senpai!" I heard Mashu exclaim.

Just as I thought that I might find myself dangling from the side of the mountain, someone grabbed onto the back of my jacket before pulling me up effortlessly. I was promptly let down as soon as the entirety of my body was over the edge. I hit the ground with an oomph as my chest smacked against the hard rock. Using my elbows I pushed off the ground to look up and see who had helped me out. As it turns out it was Scathach who had wound up saving my neck instead of breaking it. Scathach was standing over me glaring at me while the others proceeded to gather around me.

"I'm sorry." I blurted out without thinking, no doubt guilt from my earlier thoughts.

"What are you saying sorry for?" Scathach said.

"Uh Sorry, I had meant to say thank you." I replied dodging the question. It was already embarrassing enough that I had blurted out I'm sorry, I didn't want to have to explain why. Scathach just shook her head in response with her usual click of the tongue, followed by a tch. As she did I moved to get up off the ground up onto my knees and proceed to dust my jacket off.

"Seriously you idiot, be more careful." Scathach scolded me. "Nevertheless you're welcome." Scathach nodded. Before getting a chance to respond she turned her back to me and went to gather the rope tied to a rock along with the rest of the climbing gear.

"Senpai are you okay?" Mashu asked, kneeling down beside me.

"Yeah I'm fine." I reassured her.

"Here I was thinking I would be the one to make a mistake." Jeanne said, gripping her other arm. "I didn't think I would have made it past that part either if it hadn't been for Lancer's guidance." Jeanne explained.

"Well, it just goes to show that even experienced people make mistakes." I said.

"Yeah." Jeanne nodded, "But I'm just glad to see you're alright." Jeanne said before extending her hand. I accepted her help and gripping her hand she pulled me up onto my feet.

"As am I!" Mashu chimed in.

"Thanks, Saber, Mashu." I nodded my head.

"What happened anyway?" Mashu asked.

"I made the poor mistake of choosing a bad foothold." I responded. "Once I lost my footing I started to panic and slip off." I elaborated further. Not my finest hour looking back at how I handled the situation.

"Well It's a lucky thing that Lancer was keeping an eye out for you!" Mashu exclaimed. A good thing indeed, I don't think I would have enjoyed dangling off the side of a mountain while they pulled me up.

"Thankfully, but let's not linger on the subject." I said. "Gather your gear and let's move out, we've still got a lot more ground to cover before we reach the other side." I told them as I motioned them to get a move on it. There wasn't actually a whole lot that needed to be gathered, other than the rest of the climbing gear and their backpacks, but I didn't want to waste any more time..

After gathering our gear we continued our trek up the mountain making our way up the slope towards the top. I felt the cold nipping away at my face as we went further up in elevation with wind gusts that must have been up ten or fifteen miles per hour. This only added on to the group's misery and even with the sun high in the sky temperatures continued to lower. There wasn't any tree cover either with nothing but solid rock up here. Yet we couldn't do anything but trudge onwards, as we ascended the mountain. We would traverse several slopes before having to scale the side of a very narrow ledge along the rock wall that took us around the first mountain. Following that ordeal we still had another mountain that was waiting for us to scale so we pressed forwards. There was a brief moment where we were actually heading back down as we crossed in between mountains, but it was short lived as we had to head back up. It was only once we had scaled the second mountain that the familiar French lands came into view once again. By this time it was already late into the evening and we had come to a stop for a chance to rest. Mashu and Jeanne took a seat on some rocks while I pulled my water bottle from my backpack to take a sip. Scathach stood over by the ledge with her hands resting on her hips overlooking the gorge below.

"Come on, we still have a few more mountains to get over before we get into France." Scathach said, turning back to look at us as she added. "We still have more ground to cover before reaching the otherside." She wanted to keep moving? We had been climbing all day and it would start to get dark soon. I sure as hell didn't want to be navigating the side of a mountain in the dark, that's a surefire way to take a tumble down the mountain. All of this caused me to let out a sigh which caught Scathach's attention.

"What, is there a problem?" Scathach raised her brow.

"Is there no other way around?" I asked, looking around.

"Why? Did that one incident make you lose your nerve?" Scathach asked.

"Er no." I replied. If anything, shimmying along those ledges was more terrifying than that rock climb from earlier. "But it's getting late out and I don't think any of us want to be stuck climbing the side of a mountain out in the dark. So I was just wondering if there were any other ways around that don't involve going over or around a mountain." I explained. Scathach's gaze fixated on me for a moment before putting her fist up to her mouth seemingly pondering on something.

"There is one alternative route I can think of." Scathach shortly after.

"Well are you just gonna leave me in suspense or what?" I asked.

"Do you want me to tell you or not?" Scathach narrowed her eyes at me with a dirty look. Her way of telling me to drop the attitude apparently.

"Please if you could be so kind." I said earning me a scoff in response, but she begrudgingly answered me.

"There's a tunnel that cuts through these mountains up ahead." Scathach replied.

"You don't say, and you waited till now to tell us this?" I said with a slap on the knee.

"I can't remember everything." Scathach sneered.

"And how do you know about these tunnels?" Jeanne's brow raised.

"Smugglers used them to cross between the French and Italian border undetected." Scathach responded. "As far as I'm aware they're still being used today, especially during times when France closes the Italian border." She added.

"Smuggling?" Mashu murmured.

"Yeah, smuggling drugs, weapons, or humans." Scathach said.

"Human smuggling? Like slavery?." Mashu exclaimed and Scathach nodded her head in response causing Mashu's eyes to widen.

"Either they were human trafficking or during the migrant crisis, illegal immigrants from Africa or the Middle East would pay smugglers to get them into France." Scathach explained. Mashu was still in shock at these revelations, and I questioned whether it had been right for Scathach to tell her all that, but it was too late now.

"And you've used these tunnels?" I asked her.

"From time to time, yes." She nodded.

"So you can lead us through them as well." I pointed out.

"It's not a vast tunnel network if that's what you're thinking, but I know the easiest way through and where the entrance is located." Scathach said. "But they might not be there yet, given this point in history." Scathach pointed out.

"Well there's no point in pondering on it." Gripping my knees I pushed myself up. "Grab your gear ladies and let's move out." I jerked my thumb over my shoulder. Jeanne and Mashu sighed with exhausted expressions before reluctantly getting off the ground and we followed Scathach's lead.

The rocks gave way under Scathach's strength as she and Jeanne worked to pull them off to the side revealing a portion of the passageway Scathach had told us about. Once the rest of the rocks had been cleared from the entrance we were greeted by a corridor running deep into the mountain. I could barely even make out the walls or the floors, it was like looking into the vast void of space. A chill went up my spine as a cold wind washed over me as it exited the cave and hit us.

"Boy you sure know how to pick em, Lancer!" I remarked.

"And you know we don't have to take this way, right?" Scathach retorted. "We can still take the long way and go around the mountains, but that will take us another day at least." Scathach jerked her thumb towards cliffs up ahead. The thought of doing more climbing caused me to let out an instinctive groan. "That's what I thought."

"It doesn't look like anyone has passed through here, at least not recently" Jeanne pointed out peering into the passageway. "So when exactly did you first pass through here, Lancer?" Jeanne asked, turning to Scathach who crossed her arms in response.

"It wasn't during this period if that's what you're asking." Scathach answered, clearly not giving any hint to her identity.

"So then how do you know about this passage?" Jeanne asked next.

"There are plenty of passages I know about in my travels when I need to travel across borders discreetly." Scathach answered. "I don't remember exactly how I came to learn about this one, but I recall crossing paths with someone who told me about this one." Scathach said.

"I wonder, Lancer, why would you need to be traveling discreetly?" I asked.

"Don't act like you don't know." Scathach scowled before adding. "And don't give me that American ignorance bullshit."

"Was just curious." I smiled, knowing that I had successfully annoyed her. Peering down the corridor I tried to make out anything. It was just an empty corridor going through the rock leading on for about a dozen meters before I could no longer see. "I sure hope you still remember how to get through Lancer?" I asked.

"Yes I still remember the way." Scathach answered.

"I'm not gonna plummet to my death with one wrong step am I?" I asked as I looked over my shoulder back at her.

"No, there aren't any chasms or hazards." Scathach replied. "The path is pretty straight forward with some open areas here and there, but no bottomless pits if that's what you're concerned about." Scathach explained.

"I'm also wondering who tunneled through the mountain." I turned my attention forward. "I doubt this is a natural cave system." I pointed out.

"You know I don't have all the answers, right?" Scathach stated. "It's possible this cave could have naturally formed, but my guess is this was a mage's workshop at one point or perhaps it was an ancient mine. It's hard to say." Scathach proceeded to answer anyway, even if it was just her guessing. Although her guess was probably on the mark.

"A mage's workshop?" I got chills at the thought of it. "Don't tell me we're going to run into more ghosts in there?" I said turning back.

"What are you, a scaredy cat?" I felt Scathach's hands on my back giving me a push. "Come on, get moving. We need to pick up the pace if we want to keep on schedule." She said, nudging me forward.

"Hey, Don't shove!" I exclaimed. Scathach ignored my cries and continued to shove me along. The others followed suit behind Scathach as we ventured inside the mountain.

Venturing forward we followed Scathach's lead, making our way down the long corridor before entering into the open space. Nothing out of the ordinary struck me, the caves varied in size with some being larger than others, many had various jagged rocks hanging from the ceiling or coming out of the ground while some were just hollowed out empty spaces. Passing through one of them I felt something cold hit the back of my neck and with a slap on the neck before looking up, I saw droplets of water dripping from the ceiling. The surrounding area contained several puddles of water, some quite large, giving way to the idea that these caverns had formed from water erosion. That was a bit of a stretch, but I was no geologist. Keeping careful as to not fall into any puddles we carried onwards passing through many more caves like this one.

Going deeper didn't provide any clear answers as to how these caves were formed, but one thing was abundantly clear. The further we got the little outside light we had been receiving to help illuminate our way was all but gone, and we were completely enclosed in darkness. At this point we were blindly following Scathach's silhouette as she led us through the caves. She seemingly knew where she was going, but I don't know how she could see a damn thing, unless?

I leaned forward and asked Scathach a question breaking the silence, "Becoming a servant doesn't give you night vision does it?" Scathach came to an abrupt stop causing me to run into her with an oomph, which was followed by a sharp pain as she rammed her elbow into my chest causing me to wince.

"Of course not, you idiot." Scathach replied over her shoulder before carrying on.

"Alright, I was just asking." I groaned, still rubbing my chest. I would've said it doesn't hurt to ask, but I guess that's not true when it comes to Scathach. With no answers to my questions and a fresh bruise on my chest I walked after Scathach with the others trudging along behind, even though nobody could see a damn thing. After walking for a bit I began to notice my pace slowing down as it felt as if something was holding me back. Tossing a glance over my shoulder I saw Jeanne was grabbing onto the back of my jacket. Jeanne glanced from side to side as her eyes darted all over the place as if a ghost might jump out and get her at any second. Behind her I briefly caught a glimpse of Mashu whom looked equally as nervous. These uneasy looks were starting to rub off on me as I wondered what had the both of them looking so frightened. Coming to a stop I reached into my jacket as I fumbled around in my pockets searching for something. I found it and pulled out my flashlight before I turned to face Jeanne flashing it on.

"Hey, what's going on with you tw-?" Was the only thing I managed to get out.

"Wahhhhh" Jeanne cried out in response to the sudden light source. Taken by surprise she threw up her arms smacking the flashlight right out of my hands. It flew up in the air before hitting the ground with a thud followed by a crack. With that crack the light went out and we were back in the dark once again. That had been my one and only flashlight and now I couldn't see a damn thing as I searched the ground for my flashlight, so who knows where it had landed. More importantly what the heck was that just now with Jeanne? I looked up prepared to question Jeanne on her sudden outburst, but looking up I found Jeanne had vanished.

"Saber?" I called out and was greeted with no response. Mashu was nowhere to be seen either. "Mashu?" I called her name out, but again there was no response. Where the hell did the two of those run off too and why were they so spooked? "Lancer, it seems that Saber and Mashu have run off, we're going to have to look for them.." I said turning back around. Only to find that Scathach was gone too, it looks like she had gone on without out. "Oh come on, are you serious!" I exclaimed, scratching my head furiously. I couldn't see a damn thing and now I had to try and find my companions in this cave, and who knows who big this one was. Well, things are looking less than stellar right now.…
