Chapter 1
April 9, 8:56 am
bzz* *bzz* Nick woke up. He grabbed for his phone. Once he found it he saw it was Judy calling. He picked up immediately and waited for her to speak.
"Hello? Nick?" She spoke.
"Yeah? Babe, what's up?" Nick responded quickly
while rolling out of bed and grabbing clothes.
"Bogo has some 'duties' we need to fulfill."
"Jesus Carrots, Its the first weekend in like a month that we've both been off duty. Now he wants us to work?" Nick was getting peeved because of bogo's constant need for assistance but he also understood that he and Judy were some of the best cops the department had and bogo had a life to live too.
"It's not a huge deal Nick we just have to do late night protocols for the department like locking doors or whatever else. Normally clawhauser does it but him and bogo are going to some concert so I suppose it's up to us."
"I'm just surprised they have such similar music taste. I mean what is this the fourth one they've been to together?" He said after putting down his phone on the bathroom counter, now he could give his full attention to brushing down the unruly parts of his fur.
"I don't know, and I don't really think you should either." Judy responded while getting in her car and starting the engine.
"You when are you gonna get here?"
"I'm on my way, I'll see you soon." Judy said
"Ok, see you when you get here" Nick said as Judy hung up the phone. Nick always thought Judy was overly cautious about driving because she would always get off the phone during a commute. He assumed she probably wanted to listen to music instead as it might be less distracting.
10:27 am
Nick has become increasingly worried. Judy should have arrived at his place a half an hour ago. Nick sent three texts all went unread.
Nick was pacing back in fourth next to the window facing the street. Hoping he would finally see Judy pull up. This situation reminded him of when he and Finnick first moved in
~Nick's memories:
They finally saved up enough money from hustling to rent out a small space for themselves. Before that they were living out of the back of finnick's van. Nick had been dropped off at the apartment by Finnick. Nick had been left there by Finnick before he knew it. Finnick said he was off to do another "quick job" and when Nick asks if he needs help or if it's a risky one Finnick just smirked. Nick knew what that meant.
"Finni no, don't go and do anything dumb. We just got enough for the downpayment. How risky? 1 to 10." Nick pleaded
"I have to be there on time Nick. I'll be back in an hour, don't worry" Finnick said as he shifted in to gear and rolled away.
"it was noon when he left, it's been like three hours!" Nick remembers telling Judy over the phone. It was a couple of weeks after they met.
"Don't worry about him he'll be fine, he does these things all the time right?" Judy tried to reassure him.
To put it simply nick was plastered he worried himself sick and by 6 o' clock he was barely lucid. Finnick's van pulled up to the building and he walked inside. Nick was passed out on the couch with a bottle of cheap whiskey and a large urine stain on his shorts. Finnick opened the door and saw this and immediately jumped on nicks chest, grabbed his collar, and started shaking him.
"Nick!?! Jesus Christ!" Finnick was panicking, and nick was out cold. His pulse was slow, too slow, and he wasn't waking up. Finnick starting pounding on his chest trying to get him to wake up. It wasn't doing anything. Finnick hopped down to the ground, pulled out his phone, then called emergency services. When paramedics made it inside they found him trying to pull nick off the couch and out the door.
"What is your relation?" They asked when he
climbed up into the ambulance.
"Roommates... friends" The small fox could hardly speak he could only watch as they carefully applied an iv to nicks arm. He didn't need to give a detailed answer, but it didn't matter, the medics could tell he was supposed to be there by the tears in his eyes. Nick woke up the next day in a hospital bed with Finnick sleeping a chair next to him. His blood alcohol content was 0.21% and for a mammal his size he probably should have died.
~
bzzz* Nick's thoughts were cut short by a phone call. He recognized the number, as it was Bogo's.
"Hello?" Nick answered.
"Wilde?" Bogo's stern voice boomed over the phone.
"Yes chief?"
"We've been made aware that officer Hopps... she has been in an car accident." Bogo spat out the news. Nick didn't know what to say. Judy has always been a responsible driver, and if anything she was overly cautious.
"What?! Where is she?! Is she okay!?" Nick exploded in response to the situation.
"Wilde, please-" Bogo couldn't get a word out. Nick was hysterical.
"Please! Calm down Wilde, She's going to be okay. She's banged up but she'll be on her feet in a week or so. They took her downtown to Klawston central."
Nick didn't respond he just hung up, and sprinted to finnick's room. He opened the door and the strong smell of pot filled his nostrils. Finnick was on his bed controller in hand playing video games.
"Judy got in an accident, I need the van."
"Judy? In a car accident? Your joking right?" Finnick responded, and quickly regretted it as he looked to nick and saw his face.
"Keys" Nick said. Finnick tossed them to him. He got in the van and headed to the hospital.
10:58
Nick arrived and sprinted to the entrance and ran inside. He jogged to the front desk.
"Judy Hopps. Where is she." Nick said flatly and impatiently.
"I'm on it sit tight for one moment please." The small shrew explained as she typed away on her equally small computer. Nick stood around awkwardly for a second before she pointed at the elevator.
"6th floor, Ward D. Ask the feline wearing the bright scarf." She directed without even looking up from the screen. Nick didn't respond, he just walked in to the elevator and went up. He reached the ward and found the desk lady.
"Judy. Hopps. Which room?" Nick asked in a terse but not intentionally rude way.
"That way. 23-D," she said as she looked up from her computer. "Wait, relation?" She asked
"Partner." Nick said as he swiftly walked towards the room Judy was in. He opened the door leaving it slightly ajar and saw her laying in the hospital bed. Judy had a cast from her wrist all the way up to her shoulder. Nick sat down next to her, he thought she looked small in the bed. Nick heard a knock on the door, it then swung open to reveal a tiger with a large white coat and glasses.
"Wilde? Nick Wilde?" The man asked after flipping through some papers on his clipboard.
"Yes sir that's me. Is she going to be okay?" Nick asked as his eyes started to water.
"A full recovery should be possible with time and therapy." The nurse reassured him.
"How bad is it?" Nick could only muster simply questions.
"She has multiple fractures along her ulna and radius. She has sustained minor head trauma and has been unconscious since the accident. Her unconsciousness should pass sometime in the next few days. We will contact you when she is conscious and lucid. Let us know if you need anything." The tiger said in a sympathetic tone.
"I will" Nick responded. Nick had never felt so helpless in his life. All he wanted to do was take care of Judy but there wasn't anything he could have done. Nick slouched in his chair as he looked at his phone, and he eventually drifted off to sleep.
2:57 pm
Nick woke up in the most uncomfortable position he's ever fallen asleep in. He looked to Judy. She was still asleep in the hospital bed. He wanted to stay and be there if she woke up but he also couldn't do anything to help. Nick stood up and headed for the door as he called his Chief.
"Wilde? You there?" Bogo asked his voice carried a concerned tone.
"Yes chief. How did Judy get in an accident?" Nick said being very direct.
"You know I can't just tell you that Wilde. It is technically an ongoing investigati-" Bogo was cut off
"Bogo. Tell me what happened." Nick demanded.
"Fine." Bogo said in a defeated tone. He couldn't refuse to tell Nick, as he was one of the best officers ZPD had. Seeing as the two of them were in a relationship Bogo figured it wouldn't really matter all that much. After a pause he continued.
"She was t-boned while crossing an intersection, and the guy was on something. I don't know what possesses people to do ignorant shit like that Wilde I really don't. For what it's worth, I'm sorry," bogo cleared his throat loudly "Do you mind still helping close up the pd tonight. I can't refund those gazelle tickets." The chief explained with a somberness in his voice.
"Thank you for the information, and no, it's no problem." Nick responded quietly as he hung up. Nick didn't want to help close up the pd but it was better than saying no to the chief. The fox left the hospital in a hurry and got in the van to drive home.
