~Sour Milk~
"The milk has gone bad."
Ikuto looked up from his papers. He squinted out the window in front of his desk before he turned to face Amu standing in the doorway of his home office. "Okay?"
Amu heaved a frustrated sigh. "I wanted a bowl of cereal before I went to bed but the milk is sour."
"So eat something else."
Grimacing, Amu looked down at the carton of expired milk in her hand. "I worked a fourteen-hour shift today at the hospital. I have six hours until I have to be back there. You were supposed to do the grocery shopping yesterday."
"And I did," Ikuto said as he leaned back in his chair. "I didn't realize the milk had expired. I'll pick up another carton tomorrow."
She felt the tears burning at the back of her eyes but blinked them away. "I wanted cereal."
Frowning, Ikuto sat forward once more. "Amu? I'm sorry you can't have it today."
Amu set the milk to the side and scrubbed at her face. "I don't think it's the milk that has me out of sorts."
"I would expect not," Ikuto agreed.
"I think I'm scared."
"Scared of what?"
Amu heaved another sigh before meeting Ikuto's gaze. "We haven't spent much time together this month. I know we're both busy. You have that big project due and the hospital is understaffed until the new people are trained, but I'm scared."
Ikuto pushed away from his computer and desk. He crossed the room in several large strides and pulled Amu into his arms. He held her against his chest as she started sniffling again. "You have six hours?"
"Yes," she moaned.
"Then let's go snuggle until you fall asleep. You're right, we haven't made time for each other. We have to just get through these next few weeks and we'll do something. We'll take a trip or something, okay?"
Amu nodded as she wiped at her face again. She allowed Ikuto to guide her out of his office and down the hall to their bedroom. "What about the milk? I left it in your office."
Ikuto chuckled as he pushed Amu into their bed and then followed her to pull her back into his arms. "It's already gone bad. I'll get it after you fall asleep."
"Ikuto?"
"Yes?"
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
"Even if you did forget to check the milk before you went to the store."
"I love you even more whenever you cry because I haven't been properly taking care of you."
"Nevermind," Amu mumbled as she tried to scoot away from her husband. "I don't want to snuggle with you anymore."
"Too bad," Ikuto said as he nuzzled against her hair. "Because you are my favorite person to snuggle with. Even when you get mad about sour milk."
