"What are you hear for? The scenery? To get lucky?" Taking a quick glance over at the asking police officer, Leon thought of an answer that wouldn't give away what he was truly doing. Or would put himself into immediate danger so early on.
"Let's just say," he said, "I'm looking for someone."
"A special someone?" one police man asked, looking like he was about to make a joke.
"Can't give anything away," Leon answered.
"Someone imaginary then?" the other police man questioned. No time to answer as the police began to laugh. Leon didn't allow his semi-poker expression to change from the laughter and instead, just starred out of the window of the police car. Watching as the forest went past.
The laughter from the police officers slowly began to die down and what they began to talk about, Leon couldn't understand. Spoken in Spanish, he was somewhat forced to just sit in silence, not that it was much different to what it was before. He began to zone out whatever was being talked about between the officers. He was here for one job and one job only. To save the president's daughter and bring her back safe and sound.
Every tree that passed by, Leon didn't really pay any attention to anything else. Just trees upon trees. Definitely no city. Hopefully he didn't have a repeat of Raccoon City. He couldn't relive that moment of his life, not after losing his rookie partner.
"Duty calls," one police officer said.
"Can't you wait until we get to the destination?" the other asked.
"Nope," the first one answered, "It's now or the entire car smells like piss. Which would you prefer?" Ever so slowly, the car came to an eventual stop and one police officer got out out of the car, moving in a direction into the forest. Out of sight to do what he needed to do.
"You smoke?" the remaining police officer asked. Leon briefly looked over and waved his hand, looking outside once again. Couldn't be smoking in a time he was on a serious mission. Hopefully, the police officer that went out would be back soon and wouldn't take too long. The sooner it took, the quicker he could get out of the small talk with the officers.
All was silent in the police car, the smell of the cigarette taking over the inside of it. Something Leon was quick to get used to. Not much he could do about. He shifted his sitting position in which his back leaned against the car door, careful he wasn't leaning on the switch for the window. The last thing he wanted was for the window to go down and his head to go out of it if he were to lean his head back.
Luckily the window remained closed and his head rested against the window, crossing his arms against his chest along the way. Five minutes past, the police officer hadn't come back. Five turned into ten, then to fifteen, twenty. Twenty five minutes, Leon drew the line and became a little inpatient.
"Should your partner be back now?" he asked the remaining officer.
"Should he be, yes," the officer answered, "Why he isn't back yet, I don't know."
"Shouldn't you go and look out for him then?" Leon said. A brief wave of silence.
"I think you should," the officer replied, "Go and see some of the scenery in person rather than behind a window." Leon rolled his eyes as he sat back up.
"Sounds like your job to do," he said, as he opened the door, "But whatever." Out of the car, he stretched himself after what feels like days of being in the cop car. Stretched his arms, legs and back before he began in the direction he watched the first officer go in. He hoped that it was as simple as the first police officer got lost on the way back or got distracted by something.
The further he walked, the more trees he was surrounded by. The police became no longer noticeable amongst the trees and what soon became buildings that certainly weren't habitable. It would have been surprising if they were. No sign of the police officer. No sign in the wooded parts and no sign in the inhabitable part.
Yet, there were voices. Voices that could be a conversation. Leon couldn't tell from where he was. Hesitantly, and carefully, he started making his way towards the voices he heard. The voices grew louder the closer he got. Using a wall as a hiding spot, he peaked around the corner. People. He wasn't hearing things.
Something seemed off with them. They walked around aimlessly, speaking something he couldn't understand. They looked human, but not at the same time. Not wanting to take any risks, Leon took out his SG-09, moved slightly to aim and shot. The bullet shot through the leg and almost immediately, their head exploded and became what he couldn't describe.
Definitely not human and it was safe to assume anyone else he would come across wasn't human either. That explained why he wasn't able to understand what they said. He felt for his pocket, making sure his knife was still there, in case he needed it. He continued to shoot. Four bullets to take both people down, yet more came out in different directions.
For a place that looked abandoned and inhabitable, it sure had a lot of people. He had a hell of a day ahead of him, and Leon knew it.
