(Erlend POV, Twilight Isles)
As I lay on the outskirts of the Isle, I felt a sudden rush of the wind, the waves turning violent and seemingly out of control, and a large object breaking free of the deep sea, letting out a piercing rose that shook the very heavens.
It was a rather large being, bronze in color with gorgeous scales covering its vast serpentine body, its face held a majestic feel to it with what seemed to be a beard, thick mane, and large whiskers that were usually associated with the much smaller catfish and two deer like protruded from its head.
Seeing the serpentine being floating and undulating through the air, I couldn't help but think of the possible reactions of my ancestors, would they rejoice, curse me or quiver at the sight of this majestic dragon?
"You've come a long way from the little snake that eagerly followed me wherever I went".
The dragon simply snorted in response as I became reminiscent of the hatching of my bonded.
(Flashback; Entry)
Three beautiful rocks lay on his desk, one black as the midnight sea, alive with scarlet ripples and swirls, the second a deep green with burnished bronze flecks, and last but not least a bronze one streaked with flecks of gold.
"The Farmen eggs!" I couldn't help but exclaim.
"Aye, got them from the magisters of Pentos, apparently they needed to keep their gold so this was their payment" nodded Uncle Lorimas.
Something was connecting me to them, perhaps it was the Targaryen blood lay dormant in me or it was merely the waning magic seeking to reignite itself, yet I instinctively shrouded the three in my aura, only time would tell if this has any effect on them.
(Flashback; Exit)
For several moons I would shroud the eggs with my magic, an unintended side effect would be the continuous gathering of wildlife near the manor, somehow getting past the settlements undetected all to just get closer to the source of the aura.
The eggs themselves seemed to shimmer more like polished metal seeking to attract the sunlight and becoming more eye-catching as the days went by. This of course ended up being just as beneficial to me as it did for them, it allowed me to better control my aura and the effects it has on the environment around me, as well as make wildlife more docile to my commands. That was probably the only reason my aunt and uncle went along with my fascination, while they admired the eggs, it was never to the extent that I showed, at least not till they hatched…
(Flashback; Entry)
It had been a rather grueling day, training in the sweltering heat for hours on end could exhaust even the most disciplined of soldiers, let alone a 12-year-old boy, and despite being older mentally, my body didn't take too kindly to it. I could feel the amusement of my household guards but wisely chose to remain silent lest I embarrass myself.
As usual, the dragon eggs shimmered near the fireplace in my room, I quickly sat next to them and began spreading my aura to them, revitalizing myself in the process and easing my aching muscles.
To my surprise while putting my mind at ease I heard a crackling sound, it was near silent at first, and if it wasn't for my own enhanced hearing it was unlikely I would've noticed it, opening my eyes I stared intensely at the eggs as they begin to shake, feeling them come alive and shaking with great agitation. A crunch could be heard as one of them broke apart, allowing a gorgeous serpentine creature to break free, with no hesitation the little being quickly latched itself on to me, and not long after the other two followed suit. As I did my best not to get ahold of myself, I could hear a quiet cough in the background.
"Never thought a dragon would look so snakelike" I could practically feel the awe in my Uncle's voice despite the confusion. My aunt held no qualms in smacking him in the head as she looked wide-eyed at the three little dragons.
"They're just built differently" was my response, feeling three unique auras bonded to me.
(Flashback; Exit)
Initially, it had been remarkably easy to hide my children because make no mistake they were mine, regardless of what their mother's thoughts could have been. Their serpentine looks made it easy, many mistaking them for a unique species of serpents, yet as they got larger, I had to go to great lengths to hide them.
Eventually, they became far too large to keep within the manor, so I moved them to an isolated cove within an uninhabited island where they could hunt and grow without fear of discovery, and if any pirates and raiders came anywhere close to the island, well I doubt they'd be missed.
Jinhua, the Bronze Monarch, was the largest of his bonded and by far the calmest, easily reigning over her younger siblings should they get too out of hand. Of the three, she had the strongest connection to nature, and likely one of the strongest in the world, second only to himself, her mere presence could cause the ground to tremble even when in the sky. She could release powerful gusts of wind and clouds with a breath and held immense control over the seasons and climate around her.
Velskud, the Devastator, had scales as dark as the midnight sea, scarlet ripples could be seen throughout his body and horns. Of the three siblings he was by far the most draconic, aggressive, and quite savage towards what he considered enemies. His flames were the hottest of the three, capable of melting even the most resistant materials. I was sure if given enough time valyrian steel would be melted by his mere breath, though I cared for him just as much as his siblings, despite his nature.
Verna, the Virulent, had deep jade green scales beautiful to look, at yet deadly to touch, flecks of bronze could be seen through her serpentine body, its glimmer surpassed only by the molten gold eyes he held. The most shrewd and agile of her siblings, Verna preferred to play with her prey, toying with it before putting it out of its misery. Her breath could release potent poisonous gas which could kill even the most resilient of creatures. So far only myself and her siblings remained unaffected by it.
Each of the three had its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the traditional flames that their Western predecessors were famed for. Yet their connection to both myself and magic could not be denied, an important reason why I was stunned during their hatching wasn't just for their appearance but also the sheer magnitude of magic their birth spawned, to the point that it caused a resurgence of magic.
Thankfully, Summerswind Manor held significant protections against scrying and magical detection, lest the origin of resurgence be traced back to them and attract the wrong type of attention. These protections owed to the paranoia my kin held against magic users and ritualists during their exile and even before it.
Still, that would not mean I would not be careful, while the three dragons were large and powerful enough to destroy whole armies by themselves, that would not mean I'd willfully put them in danger, not when I was not ready yet, for how could I make them face something I couldn't do myself.
