"Hiccup I'm leaving today. Have you decided if we're going to the island?" The dragon impatiently waited for an answer. A feral want to pounce on his human bubbling deep inside him. "Please Hiccup. I don't know how much longer I can be here."

"Yes we're going. Now go, before you do something dumb." He waved Toothless off.

"Oh! Wait. How are you going to get there?"

"You'll have to come get me. And yes I'm sure it'll be fine. I'll be fine, you'll be fine, the island will be fine. Just go."

"Okay, okay. I'm leaving. Love you. Bye." Toothless quickly flew away.

"Bye!" Hiccup called out after him. He rolled his eyes and fell back into the increasing number of furs that Toothless brought for him to use. He closed his eyes and instantly missed the heat of his dragon. Bundling an armful up, Hiccup wrapped his slender form around it.

"It's not the same." He grumbled in the furs.

"Uhm, sir?" A nervous voice asked. Hiccup flipped over and saw a Nadder shyly sitting near him. He rubbed his eye and sat up.

"Uhm, yeah? What's up? Is something wrong." He yawned.

"We saw Master Fury leave and didn't take anyone with him. Is something wrong?" Hiccup chuckled.

"No nothing's wrong. He does this every year. There is nothing to worry about." He gave the Nadder a reassuring smile.

"If you don't mind me asking, why does he leave? He knows what time of year it is. Right?" Hiccup laughed again.

"Yes. He knows. He has a reason. It's fine. So go down and tell anyone who's worried, that nothing is wrong. He'll be back in a few days."

"Sir? The nervous Nadder asked again.

"Yes?"

"This is going to be my first mating season. I was wondering if you had any advice or something for me?"

"Nothing specific sadly. I can tell you some things to look out for. The males will be pretty aggressive. They'll try to nip at you, it's mostly because they want to get your attention. If one of them actually hurts though, bite him. On top of that, if it doesn't feel right don't do it. And you may not want to be with one of the males. If you want to be with another female than don't worry.

There is going to enough of the next generation without you.

Listen. This is going to be the largest decision of your life. And to me, you look young. Some of the other are very old and they haven't found someone.

So don't freak out if you don't find someone. You have many years ahead of you.

If you'd like more help that talk to the head of the scouting party. She can tell you more and if you don't feel safe you can ask her to protect you. Just tell her that I sent you."

"Okay thanks."

"Sorry I couldn't give you more." Hiccup apologized. The Nadder nodded and jumped from Hiccup's shelf. Hiccup finally had a chance to lay back down. He was still disappointed when Toothless' heat still wasn't present.

He woke up a few hours later to loud squabbling. He put out figurative and literal fires until it was dark. He flopped into his skins, wanting to die. He could feel himself falling asleep when he heard the clacking of someone's claws on the rock.

"What?" He saw rudely. "Sorry I didn't mean it like that. What do you need?" Hiccup groaned.

"A few of the males were hurt while fighting today. We need you to look at them. One is bleeding pretty bad. You'll probably need to close him up."

Hiccup sighed as he stood back up. He grabbed one of his small medical kits he normally brought while flying with Toothless, and followed them.

He arrived to find a large line of hurt dragons. "I thought you said a few." He grumbled.

"There weren't this many when I left." The dragon he was following lied. Hiccup sat down at a stool and called the first dragon forward. It was the one mentioned to him. He asked the large male to show him the wound. The dragon turned around to show Hiccup his back. Hiccup hissed at the gash in his back.

"How'd this happen?" Hiccup asked as he prepared a needle and thread. The old Nightmare chuckled.

"The new kin think that just because they're young they're going to overpower us older wyrms. Ha! I've seen my fair share of battles and lived through many mating seasons. I've fought for my spot and my mate. No child is going to take her from me." He stated proudly. Hiccup grunted, approvingly.

"Alright big guy this is going to hurt a lot." Hiccup warned.

"Ha! I think underestimate my streng… Ahh!" He yelped as Hiccup stuck the needle through his thick scales and skin. "Oh gods what are you doing? It burns so bad! Are you trying to kill me?"

"I told you it was going to hurt. Now try not to jump." He pulled the needle through. The boastful Nightmare cringed as the thread followed. He braced himself as Hiccup poked his second hole. The Nightmare attempted to have a conversation but couldn't get enough words between each hole Hiccup put in him. Before he knew it Hiccup was finished. Hiccup walked in front of him.

"Now listen to me. Try to take it easy. I know that's hard because of the time if the year but try. Don't fly and under any circumstance do not fight.

"No fighting? Surely I'll be attacked. My position is in danger."

"If anyone comes for you, tell them that they'll have to answer to me and I'm not in the mood for anything right now. Now go. I have look at all these people.

Hiccup spent the rest of his night and some of the morning patching up his dragons. Having as much pleasant conversation as he could so he wouldn't fall asleep. When he was finished he started the climb back to his home. Along the way people were calling for him to help them, he ignored them all. As he reached the top he collapsed onto his furs and was asleep in seconds.
