The others silently judged Hiccup's decision to trust the Deathsong. Toothless waited for Hiccup to turn around before jumping down one of the shelves, the Deathsong in tow. He stopped and pressed himself up against the wall.

"What are you doing?" The Deathsong asked annoyedly.

"Just be quiet and listen." Toothless motioned upward with his snout.

"Why should I? Not like any of them want me here."

"Just shut up and listen." Toothless scolded.

On the upper shelf Hiccup was trading looks with the other alphas.

"That thing is going to betray you." The Nightmare alpha started. "And when it does I won't accept your pleads to help track it down."

"I have to agree." The Nadder alpha said. "It would be too dangerous for us to help your hunt."

Hiccup looked towards the Changewing alpha, who was looking at the other leaders.

"You know sometimes I wonder how our flocks have become so small. And yours so large Hiccup. But it's so obvious I feel dumb only now realizing why so many of my people are considering leaving to come here next mating season."

"What are you on about?" The Nightmare asked. "You're a great leader, if those who've been loyal to you for years and years are leaving you, they're simply traitors."

"Don't be so stupid. You defend me but surely hear your own people talk of leaving you. And you too." She looked at the Nadder. "We've lost our touch. And we've lost the thing that made us necessary. We have no common enemy. No mindless thrawl, being controlled by a monster to fight against, and make people see what they would have been like if they'd given in. Or hadn't had the ability to escape."

"Fight Against? I thought The Queen only attacked humans."

"Her main plans were to attack humans, yes. But when you live near human tribes it isn't like they could see the difference between us and them. So we'd intercept as many as we could. Limit the damage as much as we could."

"I-I didn't know, I'm sorry." Hiccup looked at the other alphas.

"Your mate never told you?" The Nightmare asked.

"No, he hasn't. But I'm wondering if he knew. He's been completely open about everything else, so I don't know."

"Not like it matters anymore." The Changewing said quickly.

"It's over now, and we know it won't happen again."

"We hope." The Nadder said. "We still don't know what that Bewilderbeast is doing. It could have snapped, or is taking some sort of natural progression in it's life. Maybe it heard this place was empty or easy to take."

"Then we'll just have to wait until we get that information." The Changewing said. The others nodded, not happy about the wait. "In the meantime I think we should look at what's happening in our flocks.

"What do you mean?" Hiccup asked. The changewing looked at the others and sighed, knowing the Nightmare alpha was about to get worked up about it.

"I think Hiccup is a king." The three dragons sat quiet, and Hiccup was too confused to say anything.

"The likelihood of that is… It's not possible." The high and mighty Nightmare whispered.

"Would it be him or the Night Fury?"

"Doesn't matter." The Nightmare said swiftly. "If one is, they both are, they're mates."

"But…" The Nadder was interrupted.

"No buts."

"No, what if it happens again?"

"Okay what is going on? What are you talking about?" Hiccup stepped in towards them more.

"It was in your lineage last time, you have to tell him." The Nightmare told the Nadder.

"The king, or dragon king to be more precise, is someone who can control all of us."

"But I don't control anyone. I want my people to live free. I'm not like The Queen, I can't force people to do things against their will."

"Just listen." The Changewing said.

"It isn't like that." The Nadder continued. "The Queen that lived here wasn't what we're talking about, she was something completely different.

A dragon king doesn't need to force anyone to do anything. They're a force of nature that can't be stopped once fully realized. They're like the wind blowing, or the sea crashing against the rocks, you can't stop it. It just is.

The king's purpose is to unite, to bring everyone together, no matter who, or what they are. The last king was an ancestor of mine. He lived thousands of summers ago and nearly killed all of us. After that there was no successor and no one has been named king since.

But you show all the signs. Even for just the little bit we've been here it's easy to tell there's something different about this place. Not to mention your impossible ability to get anyone to trust you in seconds. It's likely why you have so many different species with you. While some were here before your time I'm sure. That they've stayed is quite a feat. None of us could have species like Whispering death, Fireworm Princess', and even that Deathsong. But here you are able to help one without a second thought. No matter how dangerous, you give them a chance.

Though maybe it's because of what you are. You're something in between human and dragon. You can look from the outside in, and on the inside looking in. You can see problems or ways we act in a way that none of us can, and correct them. Things that we deem as normal and not an issue."

Hiccup didn't know what to do, or say. Just below them Toothless and the Deathsong sat quietly. Toothless silently motioned for her to follow him and they slid off the rock towards the group they needed to meet up with. Toothless had a lot on his mind and flew silently. The Deathsong following close behind could tell the Night Fury had too many thoughts to properly think. When they landed seemed to snap from his stupor and get right into his element. He introduced the Deathsong to the nest mothers and the groups guarding them, and told them to play nice as he left. He immediately flew back up to the top and landed behind Hiccup. He pressed his snout against the back of Hiccup's neck.

"We need to talk in private." He whispered. "Meet me at the top, as soon as you can." Hiccup slipped an arm behind himself and slowly hooked it around his dragon's neck.

"Sorry everyone, Toothless wishes to speak with me alone. I must ask you all to dismiss. If you need anything I'll be available after we're done." He slid himself along Toothless' side and hopped on his back. Toothless took Hiccup out and up towards the top of their mountain. He landed and Hiccup jumped off began to look out towards where the Bewilderbeast was coming from.

"So what's wrong Toothless?" He asked, turning around to look at his dragon.

"I just wanted to tell you that you need to be careful with what they were telling you."

"You were listening in on that?"

"I had a feeling that you'd defend your decision to help that Deathsong and wanted them to hear it themselves. Then they tell you about the dragon king. At a time like this." Toothless Grumbled.

"What do you mean? From the sound of it we very well could be."

"No. You should never stride to be that. What they told you is true but it wasn't everything."

"And what did they leave out?" Hiccup wondered.

"Well the most important of them is that if you do become the king you must sacrifice something that you can't regain. You have to be able to make choices that are actually impossible and cause deaths no matter what."

"I get the second part but what do you mean by 'sacrifice something you can't regain?'"

"Dragon King's kill their mates in front of as many others as possible." Toothless looked at him stone faced.

"What? Why? That's horrible."

"You have to be able to make the ultimate sacrifice. You have to show them that you have the strength to do what it takes, no matter the cost."
