Hiccup looked at the fire and the meat sitting over it. The meat had blackened with a good crust, and juices were dripping from his piece. His mouth watered as he scooted himself forward and grabbed his piece from the fire. He looked it over, his stomach growling. He lost the battle with his stomach to not chomp into it, and burnt his mouth. That got a chuckle from everyone else.

With Hiccup pulling his food from the fire everyone else followed suit. Blowing on their pieces and trying to find spots they could safely bite into. But soon enough everyone was able to enjoy their meal, as much as only meat it a meal.

With bellies full and not much more to talk about, the camp grew quiet. The mid afternoon sun hidden by clouds gave both humans and dragons a reason to nap. Slowly the camp was filled with snoring humans and dragons alike. Even Toothless caught the bug and curled himself further around Hiccup, laying his head next to Hiccup's knee. Hiccup gently scratched his dragon's head and messaged the base of his ears. Toothless purred quietly. With the entire camp going to sleep Hiccup didn't bother trying to resist it himself and much like everyone else fell asleep.

The next thing he knew, Toothless was gently shaking him awake. He stretched and shook himself awake.

"Hey bud." Hiccup smiled. He looked up at the night sky. "Looks like our nap was a little longer than expected."

"Yours did. Everyone else has been up for a while."

"Oh." Hiccup looked around. The fire was roaring but no one was there. "Where's everyone else?"

"The other dragons were hungry again so they went down to the river; the humans kinda just followed them."

"Well okay then. Are you hungry? Do you want to go to the river?" Hiccup asked.

"No, I'm fine. I'm pretty sure only one of them was actually hungry and the others just went along cause they were just sitting around. But I'd rather just sit here with you for a bit. Get some alone time before everyone comes back."

"Like we won't have any of that when we stay behind when everyone leaves."

"I like where your head's at." Toothless hummed. "Haven't been able to get enough time or a safe enough spot to have any fun together. I'm missing you a lot right now." Hiccup patted the Night Fury's leg.

"I know bud, I know. I'm missing you too. But they'll be leaving soon enough and we'll be able to get reacquainted." Hiccup assured his mate. Toothless pressed his snout into Hiccup's neck and licked at him.

"You're beautiful my little human." Toothless cooed. Hiccup chuckled.

"Thank you love." Hiccup ran his hand over Toothless' throat. "You're looking as amazing as ever. As beautiful as the day I met you." Hiccup got up onto his knees and kissed Toothless. "I want to thank you for keeping me level. I owe you a whole lot. If I could give you the world I would. You'll have to settle with getting Berk into our territory."

"I already have my world." Toothless smiled.

"Okay smooth talker." Hiccup kissed him again.

"I knew you'd like that." Toothless pressed his lips against Hiccup's. Hiccup kissed him back. He pulled back and stared into his mates eyes. Raked his nails along Toothless' neck. The dragon purred deeply. "I can't wait for them to leave." Toothless whined. "I need you."

"I know, I know. Just a bit longer and we'll have this whole place to ourselves. Don't have to worry about anyone coming up to us to ask questions or seeing us, we can be as loud as we want." Hiccup kissed him again.

"Okay you need to stop." Toothless pulled back. "Any more and I'm going to drag you into the trees and it's gonna sound like I'm doing horrible things to you." Toothless shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts.

"Well you would be doing horrible things to me."

"Hiccup!"

"Sorry, sorry." He pat Toothless on the snout. "I'll let you cool off." Toothless pressed his snout into Hiccup's hair.

"You know when you hear the couples who've been together a long time talk about how much they love their mate and how hard it can be to be away from them? Until I had a mate I didn't believe them. There was no way that you could want someone so much that even the thought of them being gone or even just out of sight hurt you. Now I wish I'd listened harder to them. So I knew what was coming." Toothless huffed and Hiccup's hair flew around.

"Imagine being me then. I didn't even know this was going to be possible at all. I still can't believe we're friends much less being lovers or mates. And this whole being alphas thing. There's no one else I want to be taking this crazy journey with. I…I can't put into words how much this all means to me. But I couldn't imagine living with anyone else in any other way." Hiccup kissed his dragon softly. Toothless pressed forward into Hiccup's kiss. Hiccup backed up and giggled a little.

"I feel the exact same way. Of course I don't have a choice anymore but even if I did I'd still choose you. You're changing the world and since I'm already here I might as well be there at the end. Humans and dragons working together." Toothless paused. "It's something only you could even remotely get working. Even if the entirety of the humans that are willing to work together are here now, it's more than anyone thought possible. You have shown us that if both sides are willing to forgive and forget then there is a future where we can work together. Help each other. I don't know if you truly understand what you've set in motion. I don't think anyone does to be honest. What I do know is that when our story is told hundreds of years from now it'll be something no one believes. A story so bizarre that it will sound fake. A human falling in love with a dragon belonging to a species that no longer exists. I don't know about you but it sounds fake to me and I'm the dragon that won't exist."

"I guess we'll just have to make them believe then. Make sure that no one will doubt what we've done." Hiccup puffed out his chest.

"Somehow with you just saying that, I believe it'll happen." Toothless caught movement in his peripheral vision and looked up. He saw the group who'd gone down to the river returning. "Seems we have company."

"Well they were bound to return eventually weren't they?"

"Unfortunately." Toothless grumbled.

"Oh hush. Here." Hiccup kissed him again. "Now play nice until they leave."

"As though I was going to get aggressive or angry, they returned."
