Far away, in another world, a brave girl whose name is Korra is going to change Asami's life for ever.
I thought it'd be interesting to imagine how Asami, Korra and their friends would have lived in a space opera universe.
There are at least 9 more chapters to add, some of them are Korrasami moments.
Chapter 1 : Station Ginseng
Asami Sato had known no place except the station Ginseng. She had lived in it since her birth. That little space hub orbited a red moon and was the center of countless journeys. Ships were docked on it for refueling. Their tanks filled up by highly explosive elements drawn from the natural satellite.
That huge cluster of metal pieces was also a temporary home for those who were ready to live out of civilized worlds. For some credits, there were always persons willing to work there, far from their families. Mostly inhabited by engineers, pilots and technicians who only worked, ate and slept.
Asami had never really liked it. She should have stayed on it until she was 18. That was her father's choice. That man had been the director of a fuel company. He had to stay on the station to take care of his business and he could never have let his daughter far from him. That was why he brought her to Ginseng. He raised her and made sure that she never lacked of anything. Asking for experts from all the quadrants to come to teach her. She was a well educated girl despite never having been in a school.
Eventually, that life was not to last but Asami's life didn't change the most peaceful way. When inspecting one of his factory, her father figured out that a woman tried to sabotage the engines of a ship sold to prime minister. Willing to kill that politician, she set up a complex mechanism meant to blow his entire ship up. Asami's father prevented the disaster. After he disarmed the bomb, the girl looked for revanche and killed him. Letting a the girl orphan.
She was 17 when she was let alone. Asami then understood that she had been lucky to live on Ginseng with her father. The boring station had not been so bad after all. Once alone, she realized that the most important was to live with her father.
She had spent much time with him and had kept many good memories. Some of them concerning mechanics. She dived into it at a young age and she had learned much about engineering along her father. Although she had never gone to college, she eventually got the knowledge to create and fix a bunch of different kinds of machines. It's those skills that had made her able to live by her own.
She couldn't afford a fancy life. When her father pasted away, his company went in bankrupt. She got some money to continue her life but clearly not enough to be considered as rich as she was before. She decided to save all she received from her father in case she would really need it. Not willing to spend her heritage, she prefered living without any help. Even if it meant working on Ginseng. That was why she decided to become an engineer. Not highly qualify though, but she got a salary high enough to buy food and to rent a pod.
The place she lived in was 9 metres squares wide and 1.5 metres high. Despite the narrowness, it was a place she felt comfortable in. Soundless and with a large window providing a view to the red moon the station orbited. The decoration was simple, she has sticked some photos of her and her father to the walls.
It was that endless show that she was admiring in her pod this morning. Staring at the natural satellite that looked like it turned around constantly due to the rotating station. She was laying on her bed, elbows on the floor and hands below her chin. She enjoyed the scenery listening to music in a softened orange light. Hoping that noone would disturb her. Which was hopeless, she got eventually called by Bolin, one of her friend. She could hear him complaining from the speaker on the roof:
- Asami. Can you come ? Please. My air conditioning is not working well.
- I guess the yellow button is flasing again...
- Yes, why ?
- Damn, the pipe must be blocked. I told you, you should not eat in your room. Bread crumbs can get into the fan...
- Sorry... He said with an ambarassing voice.
- All right. I'm coming.
Asami grabed her toolbox and opened her hatch by pressing a button on a wall. As the door was opening, she could hear the outside getting louder and louder. The dormitory was crowded at this time. It was officially a simple hallway although it served many purposes. Used sometimes as a square by children to play soccer. Turned into a talking area by students who wanted to smoke cigarettes together. But mostly used by merchants to sell daily life needs. Various noises she had to get used to after a long morning in her soundproof place.
All pods' entrances were on both walls of a wide hall. Her pod being above two others, she had to use a ladder to get down. She tried to find her way through the clothes hanging on lines between pods apart from each others. On the floor, she bought a bag of height beef stuffed buns from a seller. Then she used an elevator to reach a superior level. As she was getting closer to the center of the station, she could feel the gravity decrease.
Arrived at Bolin's floor, she had become twice lighter. Her friend lived in a area poorer than hers. Not being able to rent an apartment in a 1g gravity place was not convenient. In order to not loose muscle mass and to strengthen bones, every person living here had to work out every day for no less than 1 hour. That was why many exercise machines had been set up on the floor of the hallway. Bolin had never minded them. He actually loved physical exercises so much that he used them twice more than required.
Bolin's pod was the first from the bottom. She used his ring to inform him of her presence.
- Yep. Come in. It's not locked.
Asami opened the hatch and titled her back to enter. She realized that he was doing pushups. Bare chested and weat from working out, he was counting down as he moved up and down. Facing his windows to enjoy the sight of emptiness of space.
- 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. That's it, 40, done.
He wiped himself with a towel, took a shirt on and moved toward her friend to greet her. He firstly looked at the bag she was holding, nicely surprised to see that Asami had brought food.
- Oh... you brought buns.
- Yes, let's eat after I'm done.
The girl put her bag and her box on Bolin's bed. She got a screw-driver then moved to the air conditioning panel. She used it to open a little metal plate and get her hands on a dirt bag.
- It's full, probably of bread crumbs, as I thought. Asami said.
Bolin looked embarrassed. Even though he knew it was a routine task for her, he felt ashamed of bothering her.
- Very sorry. He apologized. I'll buy a screw-driver so I can do it myself.
- Don't worry, very easy.
The bag replaced by a new one, she threw the dirty one into a trash that was in the hallway. She screwed the plate and get her tool into her box. She then used a tissue to clean her hands saying a sentence Bolin liked to hear :
- So, now, let's eat ?
- Won't say no. Where ? The docks ?
- Yeh, the docks.
