MUGEN
Challenge
.
.
"Let's be honest, Kagome, you won't be able to fish anything with an arrow. By the time you shoot, the fish is going to be way deep in the sea." I listen to you with feigned patience, as I ready an arrow. Next, I stop, an idea has crossed my mind.
I look at you.
"You've understood it." You insist, and smile.
"I challenge you." I say, and you furrow your brow.
"A challenge? Like what?" Your question comes doubtful.
"That's right, a challenge. If I hit the fish, you'll try to do the same." I clarify, or so I believe.
"With my sword?"
I almost start to guffaw in your face, which would have been anticlimactic given my dignified pose.
"With the bow." I specify.
Suddenly, you stiffen up, your back straight as you look at me and think. Your eyes have acquired that slightly wild rictus you get only when you see something or someone to overcome, and this one provokes you.
"Deal." You accept.
I nod before your words, not clear if your confidence comes from knowing you can do it, or from your belief that I can't. In any case, I won't ponder it any further.
I turn towards the river, holding once again the arrow I tied to a rope, and tense the string, watching carefully the fish as they get closer. I define their movement, and it shows me a pattern. I aim a few meters ahead of the place I'm looking at, wait, then release when I see the fish darting by a rock at one side of the river. In the moment the arrow sinks in the water and it's dragged by the current, I pick up the rope and recover it, finding a fish that has been pierced by the projectile.
"Yes!" I jump in the spot, with the arrow in my hand, and the fish towards the point.
Your golden eyes, wide open, are filled by incredulity.
"Your turn." I invite you, extending you the bow.
You receive it, take an arrow from my quiver, and tie to it a rope in the same manner I did. I have to admit I didn't expect to like so much how you've taken the correct posture for the shot. I get closer to you.
"Pull the string." I instruct you. With one hand I touch the arm holding the bow in this sort of bet we've made; the other, checks the posture of your waist and back, grazing softly the curve there.
"Kagome, if I tense this any further, it will snap."
"I do believe so." I say, resting my hand on your body as a guide, yet extending the moment more than what is needed.
You shoot.
"Kuso!" You shout. You've missed.
"I told you it isn't easy." My voice has turned sweet, and I smile as I start to stalk you.
You look at me, and I guess your surviving instincts warn you of something.
"Oh, I'd like to see you using my sword." You voice, with a certain naivety that makes me widen my smile.
"Don't worry, that's my plan." The confession, and the tone I use to express it, make you cease with your idea, then understand mine.
"Oh." Is what escapes your lips, your eyes like two suns, irradiating.
"Any objection?" I've reduced the space between us to nothing.
You take air through your mouth, deeply, and then forget about the arrow you are trying to recover, for now your hand is on my waist.
"None."
And again, your eyes take on that slightly wild rictus they get when you see a challenge, and this one provokes you.
