Practicing
.
My steps take me, steady, across the forest as I feel the company of the sounds echoing from the branches snapping under my feet, or the animals, darting through the bushes, as I come upon them. Your scent guides me, together with the rhythmic sound of your arrows cutting the wind. You've followed this routine for a few days now, after deciding you needed to practice your archery as to make sure your skill doesn't dull, and albeit I've learnt to leave you your own space, as time passes I find it inevitable to come close to you, just in case you may need me.
The sound of your arrows becomes clearer and more distinct with every step, and soon I'm able to catch glimpses of your figure across the trees. There I stop, shrouded by the natural shadows of the forest, observing you shoot your arrows, one after another, each landing near the center of the target you use for practice. I watch your hands picking up a new arrow then, only to stop right after without even nocking it, your arms falling on your sides in something I think, must be to grant some rest to your muscles, yet you soon dispel that notion.
"How boring!" You shout, then walk to the target to recover your arrows.
It is now, when I give it some more thought, that I realize the way in which I always try to find a solution to your woes, no matter the cause.
With such an idea is that I step forward, skipping the distance I decided to keep to freely allow you to have time for yourself. I jump, stealthy, to reach the target you've created and there I wait for you to be in position once again, as you walk while carrying the arrows you've recovered.
I smile when I see your expression, surprised at finding me here.
"InuYasha." You say my name in a mix of recognition and disbelief.
"Kagome, I think that if you really want to practice, you need a moving target." I explain.
You stare at me for a moment.
"You?" Your disbelief only increases, and in some way, I prefer it to the boredom you had to shout away before.
I nod, once, determined.
"I don't want to hurt you." You voice, your arms falling on your sides, carrying your bow and arrow.
"I think I can be faster than you." I tease, a joking tone playing around my words.
A light smile appears on your features, together with that mischievous look I like so much.
"I hope you are." You state, putting on your quiver, filled with your arrows as you nock one on your bow.
I prepare myself for practice.
The first arrow is released, and I evade it with ease by jumping to my left; the second, seemingly foreseeing I'll dodge to my right, comes a short distance away from me as I once again avoid it. You are now a challenge, and that makes me smile. You aim the third arrow at my legs, yet I escape from it with a leap that leaves me right in front of you; so startled you are, you take a step back and lose your balance, so I react by holding you from both arms at shoulder height, and I smile at you, victorious; you don't seem bored anymore.
I kiss you next, a short, innocent kiss that barely presses your lips with mine.
"What are you doing?" Your surprised tone comes with a hint of a light chuckle that brightens my heart.
The answer comes easily to my lips.
"Practicing."
