Chapter Eight- The Simple Things Are What Matter

In an antiquities gallery somewhere hidden in Greece, one Diana Prince was busy at work cleaning the gallery and curating a set of once lost artefacts that once belonged in Mount Olympus. Diana was busy at work, however, there was a man who had now been occupying her thoughts.

Not since the death of Steve Trevor and that ill-fated wish of hers decades ago, had a man once again occupied her thoughts. Steve Trevor had a profound effect on her life and his death was one that she had difficulty getting over for a long time. Her actions after his death were a time in her life that she was not proud of.

In the 80s, she and a former friend Barbara had found the Dreamstone which allowed a person, one heartfelt wish. Her wish was being reunited with Steve Trevor as his spirit inhabited another man's body. She never truly thought about the implications of her wish, and after her former friend had gained abilities similar to hers, and Maxwell Lord's father had found the stone, chaos erupted all over the world.

All over the world, people were granted the ability to have their wishes come true, and with Barbara not willing to be a normal person again, and the cold war between the U.S and Soviets, tensions and chaos was at an all time high. A climactic battle has ensued between Wonder Woman and Cheetah, where Diana had triumphed over her foe.

And Diana had managed to convince Maxwell Lord's father of the truth and that he needed to renounce his wish and stop what he was doing to ensure the world was not destroyed because of his selfishness. She made him realize his own humanity and discover what was truly important to him, his son. Thankfully, things had gone back to normal after his wish was renounced and subsequently, everyone's ability to have their wish granted. The Dreamstone was sealed away and thankfully, no one had any memory of the nuclear war that would have occurred; things had gone back to normal.

This period in her life gave Diana great shame and made her cringe at her own behavior. Someone else's body had been taken over by Steve Trevor's spirit, without his consent. She had engaged in sex with that man without his consent and that man had fallen into dangerous, life-threatening situations. She was ashamed that she had raped a man. It was a time in her life that she deeply regretted.

It had taken her time and she had actually worked on herself. She was able to move on and put her past behind her. She would always love Steve for being her first friend, hero, and lover, but she needed to move on. It was not wise to dwell on dreams and what could have been instead of working on living life to the fullest of her ability.

Time had passed and she once again found herself as a hero, as part of a team known as the Justice League, a group of superpowered individuals who were the protectors of Earth and its final defense against anything that would harm it. She found herself becoming the co-head of the league and a friend to Batman and Superman. The three shared an interesting dynamic and she balanced out both batman and Superman by being able to make the harder, colder decisions when needed to protect people, befitting her status as a trained warrior.

Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman were collectively known as the Trinity and they were known for many things. Batman was the hero who fought in the darkness, punishing the guilty and the corrupt from the darkness. Superman was the face of the Justice League, the beacon and light of hope and protector of humanity. And Wonder Woman was the protector of the innocent and those who cannot defend themselves. The three were a perfect team and a winning combination.

Despite all the good she had done, she had longed for something more, something simple. She had longed for a family, to be a mother and to have a life beyond being a hero. Heroism was something she could not see herself do forever. One day, she would die and grow old; it was a natural part of life. She did not desire to live forever, there was no joy in that. She wanted to leave behind her own legacy and perhaps one day experience the joy of motherhood.

However, the man known as Naruto had come to occupy her thoughts since the day they met. Naruto was no ordinary individual. He was an Atlantean, a race of superhuman individuals with the power to live and breathe underwater. Before her time, before Atlantis had sunk into the sea, the Amazons and Atlanteans had waged bloody war and brutal conflict with one another. The reasons for this war were a guarded secret, something her mother had never told her about as she had no interest in the past.

The other part of Naruto's lineage was something she could not pick up on. On one hand, she could sense Asgardian blood within him, and this gave her pause as the Asgardians and Olympians once had a past of their own, one that she had no idea about. On the other hand, she could sense this weird, superhuman, ancient energy flowing through his body, something that had its roots in both the physical and the spiritual. It was all very confusing.

All in all, the man known as Naruto was indeed an enigma, a unique puzzle that she was very interested in solving. He was a man who had serious power in his finger tips, but he too was a lost soul like her, searching for something more. Perhaps, she wished to forge a connection with him. It had been a long time since she had a deep, intimate connection with another soul.

She was shaken out of her musings when she noticed the presence of her adopted sister, the half human, half-Amazonian named Donna Troy, carrying greasy takeout with a smile on her face. Diana shook her and smiled back as she asked her sister to sit.

Diana had looked upon her sister and was proud of the woman she had become. Donna had lost her mother early on in life and lost her father to the actions of an arsonist. She had taken Donna in and trained her to be a warrior and to replace the loss and hopelessness in her life with the fire of resolve. Diana had found herself a wonderful sister, and Donna found a loving guardian and mentor.

After Donna had grown up, she joined a team of superheroes known as the Titans as she became a hero and protector in her own right. She too had her own trials and tribulations as she made many friends and fought powerful foes. She had fallen in love and even suffered the loss of said love.

However, there was a dark time in her life that had led to the eventual disbandment of the Titans. The Titans had faced an opponent unlike any other; a man known as Deathstroke. Deathstroke was responsible for the loss of her lover, and Donna Troy regretted the methods she used to take revenge on Deathstroke.

She had involved a man's family in this matter. Revenge had clouded her mind and all of this did end in tragedy. She was ashamed and disgusted with herself for how far she would go for revenge. The titans had disbanded in the wake of this incident and Donna had hung up her uniform.

After much needed soul searching and atonement, Donna once again found herself as a hero. She was no longer Wonder Girl, but it would never stop her from being a better person and doing the right thing. She would never cross the line again, and she would never let something as petty revenge cloud her own sense of humanity and logic.

With all the confusion and conflict storming around in her mind, Diana could find no better person to talk about her problems than her sister.

As they were eating, it was Donna who broke the ice.

"It has been a long time since I have seen you so focused on something and not have an answer for it. The last time you were this focused was when we first started training. I do remember those lessons. You were fair, but you were very strict."

Diana smiled. "I remember those lessons too. You were a good student. You managed to surprise me on a few occasions and teach me a thing or two."

Diana then got quiet as she was thinking about something and Donna shook her head.

"It has been a long time since I have seen you like this, Diana. Is it a man that has caught your attention after so long?"

Diana sighed. "I am sorry, Donna. I have just been thinking about…"

"You have been thinking about a man called Naruto, right?"

Diana looked at her. "How do you know about him?"

Donna snorted. "I stopped being Wonder Girl but it does not mean that I stopped keeping an eye out for people with extraordinary abilities. Though he is called the "Aquaman", his heroics have not caught on with everybody. Many people think he is still a myth, a whisper, a fairy tale at best. I know there is a scientist trying to find the "Aquaman" to try to prove Atlantis is real, but that will go nowhere."

"The man can fight really well. And you know what they say, the harder you fight, the rougher you…"

Donna looked up in shock. "Language, Donna Troy. And it is nothing like that."

All though, Diana had to wonder how interesting an encounter like that would go.

"Oh? Then tell me, how is it then?"

Diana sighed again. "He is an Atlantean. Mother and the Amazons of Themyscira have always tried to keep an eye on Atlantis since the end of the war. They wonder if he is a potential enemy. You know how they can be."

Donna nodded. "Yeah, I know. The history between the Amazons and Hercules has not been pretty. Yet, that war between the Amazons and Atlanteans happened way before our time. Its ancient history, literally and figuratively. The "Aquaman" is a lone-wolf. He just wants to be left alone and I don't blame him. He wants to help people and do it in peace. The world may have accepted heroes, but that did not come easy for anyone. And believe me, sometimes it is best to have nothing to do with idiotic society."

Diana said nothing as she simply thought about what Donna said. And once again, Donna cut straight through her thoughts.

"Do you have a thing for this guy, Diana? Do you want to know this guy?"

"No, it is nothing like that…"

"I think it is, Diana. After Steve died, after your aunt died, you became afraid. You are afraid of letting someone in, you are afraid of letting someone get close to you. More importantly, you are afraid that if you do, you won't be able to protect them and they will die. Is that what this is all about? You wish to learn more about this man, get close to him, feel love again, but you are afraid?"

"I never expected the Wonder Woman to be afraid of anything." Donna said this last fact gently.

"If you want answers, and I know you do, you should go and talk to this man. You have nothing to lose, but perhaps you have all to gain."

Donna left after she finished her meal and Diana was lost in thoughts. She would not get her answers until she spoke to Naruto, and there was no time to like the present. It would be something, an Atlantean and Amazonian getting along. It had been a long time since their people last spoke.

"Yay, ice cream; three scoops."

"Hey there, be careful you don't walk so fast. You might fall."

A child was walking so fast, excited and happy to be holding an ice cream cone with three scoops on a warm, summer day. She was so happy her father treated her to ice cream, and she got to have a cone filled with a scoop of chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio. Her joy was infectious and apparent and her father was happy as well; ice cream could bring a smile to children and adults.

In her joy, she forgot to slow down as her ice cream cone collided with someone's pants as she looked at her ruined ice cream cone that fell to the ground. She looked up at the man who had a confused expression on his face.

The father caught up to his daughter and offered an apology to the man as the child had unshed tears in her eyes as the man looked at her.

"My ice cream…"

The man then placed his hand on her head as she expected that she would be yelled at. Instead, father and daughter heard something unexpected.

"I am sorry, sweetie. I should be more careful where I am walking. Here, go and buy yourself nine ice cream cones."

The blonde man walked away as the father-daughter duo looked at him in shock. As the blonde walked away, the father thanked him for his kindness and generosity, as did the child.

"Thank you, mister."

The man simply gave a small wave as he disappeared into the crowd of people enjoying the warm weather.

Naruto took at seat at one of the park benches as he saw the people in the city enjoying the last month of summer. He saw the father pushing his daughter on the swing, as well as all manner of people just having a great time; families having picnics in the shade, lovers talking and spending time together, and people coming together celebrating community.

However, the sight that truly warmed his heart and made him envious was the sight of family. Life was not always easy. It was full of struggle and difficulty. To live and to survive, man and woman had to work hard, persevere, and grow. The pursuit of a wonderful life was not an easy one.

Yet, one thing that gave man and woman peace in their daily lives was coming home to family. The sight of that father and daughter spending time together, laughing and cheering, enjoying the good times tugged at Naruto's heart strings. He always imagined himself with a family of his own; a wife and children, and growing old with his wife as he watched his children go on to have wonderful lives and legacies of their own.

This is something Naruto wanted. The life of a hero, while appealing to many, was not something that he overtly craved. He would always help people and he would never walk away from his gifts and responsibilities. He remembered watching a cartoon on TV called Spider-Man. And there was a character known as Uncle Ben, who gave his nephew, Peter Parker, an important life lesson. And that lesson was- with great power, came great responsibility.

Naruto would never walk away from helping people. He chose to help people in secret as no one was ready for a guy like him. Yet, this was something he could never do forever. He had his own issues to work on, that part was true. Once he would overcome those issues, his goal was to have a family of his own.

He knew deep down; his father had many secrets. He never spoke about his family with Naruto; Naruto guessed he was either ashamed or hurt deeply by his past. Still, Naruto loved his father and whatever his father did in his past was simply the past. His father was a different man; a better man than he let on.

He was shaken out of his musings when he heard a familiar voice as he rolled his eyes.

"That was a wonderful thing you did for that child. Instead of getting angry, you apologized and brightened her day. It seems you are capable of kindness."

Naruto rolled his eyes as he saw the Wonder Woman standing by his side, dressed simply and wearing a pair of glasses that hid her identity. Naruto scoffed. People were either gullible, or they chose to see what they wanted to see.

"Did you really think I was going to get angry at a kid? I was in the wrong and I should have watched where I was walking."

"Still, you did a good job. May I sit here?"

"It's a free country."

Naruto and Diana simply sat together awkwardly as Naruto wondered what this woman wanted with him. No one really had that much interest in him, and he was starting to wonder if she was following him. Pretty people came with their own set of issues and he had no time for either of them.

"Uh, is there something you want with me? This is creepy… you know."

Diana sighed. "I am sorry. I have good intentions. I am curious about you."

"I thought we already had this discussion. You gave me good advice, advice that I needed to hear. I was bitter and angry and I needed to really think hard about my life. I still have my issues with my mother, but I am in a better place. Thank you for your advice."

Diana smiled. "You are most welcome, warrior. I am glad I could be of aid."

Naruto noticed Diana clasping and unclasping her hands. She seemed nervous, even fidgety. He never expected seeing the Wonder Woman nervous about anything; you learned something new every day.

"Is there something you want to ask?"

"Well… I was wondering if you… you know…"

Naruto smiled. It was kind of funny seeing her so nervous. "This is amusing."

Diana huffed. "Yeah, it would seem amazing to you."

"Yeah, but you should go ahead and say what you want to say."

"Well, I was wondering… if you would go out on a date with me."

Naruto sighed. "Respectfully, I am going to have to say no."

Diana looked up, curious to why Naruto said no.

"Look, I am not saying no because of you. You are beautiful, intelligent, and possess a great heart. You are a hero and a warrior. I can imagine that there would be many that would want to capture Wonder Woman's heart."

Diana tilted her head in confusion. "You don't want to be that person?"

Naruto sighed. There was a topic in his life that he did not wish to think about, but it was something he needed to get off his chest.

"I was never bitter in my life because of my mom. I was also bitter for another reason. I… I was in love before. There was a woman… and she meant the world to me. I wanted to marry her, have children with her, grow old with her. However, life does not work the way you want it to all the time. All of a sudden, she disappeared and I have no idea why. Some days, I feel like all we had was just a dream."

Diana held his gently. "I can tell that you loved this woman a great deal, that you miss her deeply."

Naruto held her hand. "I do. I miss her every day. I wonder where she is and if she still thinks about me, wonders about the life we could have had together. It is why I am bitter. I have to better myself before I can give my heart to another. I have to get over my own issues before I can ever devote myself to another woman. When I love someone, I love them for life. And I do not handle loss so easily."

Diana nodded gently. "We seem the same in that regard. I have never been able to handle the loss of loved ones all to well. It took me a long time to get over the one I loved as well. I understand where you are coming from. Forgive me, I did not know."

Naruto could see that while Diana understood him, she was still a little sad. What could a small meal between warriors hurt?

Naruto stood up and gave his hand to Diana, who looked at his hand then him with a confused expression.

"Allow me to properly thank you for the advice you gave me. This is not a date, but how about you come with me to Japan? There is a ramen shop that I would like to take you to too; my treat."

Diana smiled as she took his hand and shook it. "I would be happy to do so."

"Remember, its not a date."

"Yeah, yeah."

Diana smiled as she wrapped an arm around him as they walked away. Maybe, something positive could come out from this non-date. Maybe, this is what Naruto and Diana both needed for them to move on from their ugly pasts.

"At last, its ready. This sucker is finally ready for battle."

Inside of his workshop, David looked on at the armor that Orm had given him. It had taken him some time, but he rebuilt and reconfigured it to his ideal image and specifications. He incorporated the knife that his father had given him into the armor and reconfigured the weapons to his liking. It was time to go hunting, and soon enough, he would catch himself the mother of all fishes.

"I am coming for you, Aquaman. Soon, I will show you the exact mercy you gave my father and gut you like the fish you are!"
