Hey, so it's been a while hasn't it? My bad... I really don't mean to take this long to update, its just that sometimes it's hard to come up with a good plot for a chapter. And I'm busy. Mainly I'm busy... But enough from me, ONTO THE CHAPTER!
My steps falter but I manage to right myself as we walk into the living room. How much does he know? Upon entering the room I notice the placement of the two empty chairs, between Stewart and Father. William places the tray of cups down on the coffee table and I place the pitcher down next to it. I hand a glass of water to each adult, Stewart and Mary smiling kindly as they take their glasses but as I hand Father his glass and our hands brush I quickly let go and rush back to the tray.
" William, why don't you sit down? I can bring you your glass."
" Thank you, you are most kind." William smiles and I can't help but smile back. He walks over to the seats and begins to sit in the one closest to Father. William, bless you.
"William," Father starts, turning to him, "surely you would prefer to sit next to your father?"
William gives my Father that fake smile while tilting his head slightly to the right.
"Ah, but I want to be able to hear you properly and it would be most rude and selfish of me to ask you to repeat yourself."
Father smiles back but I can see the anger growing in his eyes.
"What if Kathleen wished to sit near me? To assume she wasn't going to sit there was very selfish of you." William's face grows red, not used to being reprimanded like this. William has always been a perfect child. William starts to get up and move to the other chair.
"William," I quickly interject, "you can sit in that seat. I am content with sitting in the other seat."
Father turns to me and I can see the fury in his eyes. While Stewart and Mary may not see it, Father sees my defiance very clearly.
"How selfless of you Kathleen, to allow him the seat and to bring water," Father says with a smile. I walk over to William and give him a glass of water and sit in the last empty chair.
"I was merely trying to ensure the Fraiths are comfortable."
"Thank you Kathleen, you have been a very kind hostess," Stewart says with a smile which I return.
"Indeed," Mary says, "she will make a fabulous wife someday, don't you agree William?" There is a twinkle in her eyes that I've never seen in Abnegation. Odd.
William's face grows red again and he ducks his head, scratching his neck. Even his ears grow red.
"Of course," he says, his voice a little high.
Father is livid. His posture is tense, his smile strained, and his eyes are closed.
"Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, she still has plenty of time before that. But, Kathleen's future is not the reason for this meeting."
The twinkle disappears and Mary returns to the quiet, respectful wife.
"Of course, my apologies."
Through the remainder of the meeting Father never relaxes back to how he was in the beginning. I'm going to be punished... I never look up from the floor except to occasionally refill the glasses.
Everyone stands and I realize the meeting is over. No, don't leave. Don't leave me here.We make our way to the door and Father says goodbye to Stewart and Mary. William and I stand a bit behind them.
"Thank you," I say stiffly, reciting my line as a proper hostess. William chuckles lightly under his breath.
"You don't have to follow a script with me Kathleen. I understand."
I pause for a moment and smile to myself. He doesn't understand, truly, but he's trying and that means a lot.
"And tomorrow, " his voice dropping to a whisper, "do what is best for you. If not for your sake, then for mine."
I blink in surprise and confusion.
"What do you mean?" I look up and ask. He smiles as he responds.
"I want you to be happy, and safe, for once. I'll see you tomorrow."
He heads to the door and he and his parents leave. I keep my head ducked as Father closes the door. Father pauses and turns slowly and walks up to me. I can feel the anger radiate off of him in waves.
"Kathleen," he says, voice low and gravelly, " I am very disappointed."
Well, wasn't that just a ride of a chapter... I really am starting to like William, but am still unsure if i want him to be a reoccuring character. Let me know if you all like him too! And feel free to leave a review or PM me if you'd like, its always super nice to hear from readers! Sorry about any spelling or grammatical errors! And until next time, Stay Fierce! ~ChildOfLupus
