Bella - BPOV

How did Alice talk me into this? I should be at home, in my room reading a book or finishing my homework, not running through the streets of Volterra, for crying out loud. Where the hell is that wretched clock tower Alice was talking about? He told me he didn't love me, so why is he here trying to get himself killed? Actually, I don't want to know. I'm saving him so that he can go home with Alice so that he can be reunited with his family and I can go back home. I have my own life now.

I finally reach the town square with the clock tower and of course; said tower is on the other side of the square that's filled with hundreds of people. I glance at the clock and see that I only have one minute left to reach Edward before he does something immensely stupid. I make my way through the crowd and a fountain and then I see him standing in the shadows, ready to step forward into the sun. I start screaming his name, hoping he will hear me, but there's no reaction. The moment he makes his first step into the sun, I slam into him and start yelling directly at him:

"Edward, move. You have to move, they're here. I'm alive, Edward, move!"

"Bella, you're alive."

"Yes, I'm alive, nice observational skills, Edward. Now move out of the sun!"

God, trying to move a vampire is as difficult as trying to move a brick wall. Finally, Edward moves with me to the shadows. Edward looks up, shaken, and I see two men approaching through the alley. Damn, the Volturi. Thank you very much, Edward, for not moving when I asked. Now we're in serious trouble.

"Gentleman, I won't need your services anymore but thank you for your help. Come, Bella."

Edward tries to reason with them but that's definitely not working. I look at the two red-eyed vampires standing across from us. The large one reminds me of Emmett in a way, only this one is more like a grizzly bear, where Emmett is more a teddy bear. The other one is just gorgeous. His skin has an olive complexion and his hair has a warm brown color. His eyes are crimson red and when I lock eyes with him, it feels like I'm home. How is that possible?

"Aro wants to speak with you again."

"Fine, Bella, you can go back and enjoy the festival."

Oh, here he goes again, deciding for me. Nice to know he's still the same Edward. Finally, there's Alice, maybe she has more luck getting us out of here.

"The girl comes with us. It's not a request."

"Indeed, it is not! What is taking you so long? Aro is waiting. Follow me!"

I see Alice and Edward bowing their head in submission. Both of them stop their attempts of convincing them to let us leave and start to follow the girl. Edward keeps me close to his side and leads me along. Where are we going? Wait, did the girl say Aro? Isn't that one of the kings? Why am I getting a bad feeling about this?

We walk a short distance and stop by a hole in the ground. I see the girl, the gorgeous guy and Alice jump down. I look at Edward questioningly.

"The entrance to the castle is hidden beneath the city. You'll have to jump down, Alice will catch you, don't worry."

I look down the hole and I can't detect the floor. I'm guessing it's a long way down. I go and sit on the edge and I roll my eyes when I hear Alice say:

"I'll catch you, Bella, just jump. You'll be fine, I've seen it."

I take a deep breath and jump down, yelling: "Catch me, Alice!"

The moment the strong arms catch me I feel totally safe. I can feel a tingling sensation all through my body and I look straight into the eyes of the red-eyed vampire. I feel myself getting lost in his eyes again. He's looking at me like I'm the most beautiful girl he's ever seen, it's so cute.

He puts me down gently when Edward jumps down next to us. He squeezes my hand gently before letting you and I instantly feel like a part of me is missing. Edward is growling at the Volturi. What's his problem? I would like to survive this meeting, so I throw him a silencing glare.

We start walking towards the castle; I'm walking next to Mr. handsome. I need a name to go with this gorgeous man. Maybe I should just ask him… I notice that while we walk, our hands occasionally make contact and every time that happens, I feel that strange tingly feeling. It makes me so happy inside and I can't help smiling.

We walk into what seems like a throne room and I look around with wonder in my eyes. Then I hear a voice say:

"Sister, we send you out for one and you return with two… and a half. Clever girl!"

Oh great, they have a comedian. If I wasn't so terrified, I would applaud him. Mr. handsome leads me to the center of the room and gives me a quick reassuring nod. It calms me instantly and my heartbeat returns to normal. How did he do that? Does he have the same gift as Jasper?

"What a happy surprise, Bella is alive after all. Isn't that wonderful? I love a happy ending, they are so rare. Don't you agree?"

I see a man crossing the room and recognize him from the painting in Carlisle's study. This is Aro, the king that can read every thought you've ever had with the touch of his hand and he's now touching Edward's.

"Interesting, you're quite the mind-reader yourself, Edward, though you can't read Bella's thoughts. Fascinating! Bella, would you do me the honor?"

I hesitate. Will he be able to read mine? Well, here goes nothing. I raise my head and give him my hand. I look over to the two other kings and see Marcus sitting on the left and Caius on the right. They're looking at us with interest. Aro closes his eyes when he takes my hand, only to open them a few seconds later, totally surprised.

"I see nothing. You are a rare gem, Bella. I wonder if you are immune to all our powers. Shall we, Jane?"

Who's Jane and what's her superpower? I see the girl that walked down with us coming closer and before she can do anything, Edward lunges toward her. She doesn't blink and says:

"Pain."

Her gift hits him midair and she has Edward writhing in pain before he even hits the ground. Oh my god, why would Aro want to test that power on me?

"Jane."

Aro interrupts Jane's attack on Edward and takes his time to give her the command to test her gift on me. Mr. handsome steps forward and offers his hand to Aro. Why is he doing that?

"Master Aro, we don't hurt one of our own."

Aro nods with a smile on his face and steps forward to take his hand. Everyone is looking at him questioningly.

"Wonderful, just wonderful, Demetri, I couldn't be happier. Alice dear, would you do me the honor of showing me your thoughts?"

Demetri, his name is Demetri. I love it, I imagine me calling him Demi while moving my hands over that gorgeous body. Oh, snap out of it, Bella!

I look at Aro who is now holding Alice's hand. Really this mind-reading thing is getting annoying. Can anyone start explaining what the hell is going on? Why is Aro reading Alice's mind and why does he look so pleased with what he's seeing? I need subtitles…

"Edward, it seems that there is a misconception of your true relationship with Bella. Before I ask Marcus to check her bonds, can you state the nature of your relationship with her?"

"Bella is the love of my life. She is my true mate. We're meant to be together."

"Bella, would you tell me your thoughts on this matter."

"I loved Edward with all my heart, he meant the world to me and we were going to be together for eternity. I asked him to change me more than once but he refused. After an unfortunate incident on my birthday, he decided that I was not good for him and that he didn't love me.

He broke my heart into a million pieces and vanished from the face of the earth. I mourned my loss, I was catatonic for months and then I decided he wasn't worth it anymore. I came here today to save him, because of his family. They would be devastated if he died because they love him. I don't, Edward is not my mate. I was a fool to believe that."

"Bella love, you don't mean that. We love each other. I'm sorry, love, I did it for you, I wanted you to have a normal happy life. I love you so much; I had to keep you safe."

What the fuck! He thought breaking my heart was the best way to go. How fucked up can a vampire be? Who does he think he is, making decisions in my place? He was my boyfriend, not my father. I can't, for the love of God, recall what I ever saw in that boy.

"You love me?! You had to keep me safe?! What about asking me what I wanted? No, you decided what was best for me, without any regard for my feelings. You're an asshole, Edward! I would slap you if I didn't know I would hurt myself more than I would hurt you. You don't get to decide what's best for me, I'm a grown woman, and I can make my own decisions. I don't ever want to see you again."

I turn around and look at the kings. I can't look at Edward one second longer.

"I would have thought Carlisle raised you better than to treat a lady like that, Edward. You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm sorry you had to endure that, young Bella, truly sorry. Marcus, please show me Bella's bonds."

Aro walks over to Marcus and makes brief contact with his hand. He sighs when he looks back at Edward.

"My dear Edward, you're very much mistaken. The bond you share with Bella is one of young love and affection. Where it once was very strong, it is now one-sided and feeble. Bella was never your mate, her blood called out to you and you misinterpreted your connection with her. That connection is worth nothing in comparison to the bond of true mates that Demetri and Bella share. Their love is pure, strong, and eternal."

I turn to Demetri and he pulls me close to him. I immediately feel safe and happy in the arms of my true mate. Edward starts growling at him and tries to break Felix's hold. Alice is telling him to calm down but that's not working. Aro is getting agitated.

"Alec, numb him for the remainder of this meeting please, I don't like interruptions. Dear Alice, take Edward home, I'm sure Carlisle misses you both. Keep in mind that you broke one of our laws; we will decide later on what your punishment will be. Felix will escort you back to the entrance at the end of this meeting.

My dear Bella, your gifts will make for an intriguing immortal. Would you consider staying with us? Your change is guaranteed as is your place within our guard, next to your mate."

There's only one answer to that question!

"I would be honored, Master."

"Very good, you are all dismissed. Felix, show our guests out. Demetri, show your mate your quarters and take your time to get to know each other. Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

Edward - EPOV

I can't believe this is happening. I've lost my Bella for the third time. Okay, I'll admit it; the first time was my own stupid mistake, it was my dumb decision to leave her just to keep her safe from all the terror of our world. The months that followed were the worst of my existence, I tried tracking Victoria down and failed miserably at it, but most of the time I wallowed in my own sorrow and my life was hell without my Bella in it.

I kept saying to myself that my pain was worth it if it meant that Bella was happy and safe, so I persevered even when it was the hardest thing I ever did. Nothing could have prepared me for Rose's phone call. My Bella was dead and at first, I didn't believe it for the world could not have lost such a beautiful angel.

When I called Bella's house, no one answered, she was gone. My life was over; I couldn't live in a world where Bella doesn't exist.

So I went to Volterra to let them end my miserable existence, hoping I'd be reunited with my angel in the afterlife. But what do you think? Of course, my life can get even more fucked up, the kings refuse to execute me. My gift is too precious, well I don't fucking care about my gift. I decided to take matters into my own hands, if I broke one of the cardinal laws, they would surely end me. That's why I stepped into the sunlight with the sole purpose of exposing myself to the humans, only to be rescued by an angel.

My angel, my Bella, she wasn't dead. It felt like a miracle and if it hadn't been for those damn guards, I would have been on my way home with her, telling her how much I love her and making it up to her. But no, that's not how my life goes. First, there was that wretched Demetri with his thoughts of Bella being his mate. Second, there was Alice not catching Bella so she ended up in that monster's arms, and then Bella was so shocked by all that was happening that she started saying things she didn't mean.

I just know that she still loves me; she was just too scared to admit it. Who wouldn't be scared while being surrounded by monsters? There's no way in hell that Bella is mated to that tracker. I'm certain that Chelsea messed with our emotional ties; there is no other explanation for this mess. She broke Bella's tie to me and made it look like Bella and Demetri were mates, just so that Aro can have Bella in his precious guard. That's not going to happen if I can help it, I will get my Bella back.

I let Alice lead me out of Volterra, but I'll be returning soon, I'm not leaving Bella here with those monsters. I can hear Alice sighing.

"Edward, you're wrong, Bella is going to be happy here, she is home now; I've seen it."

"Well, you also saw Bella getting killed by Laurent so excuse me if I don't have much confidence in your visions right now. Bella belongs to me, she's my mate."

Alice shakes her head and steps into the car with a pitiful look on her face.

"You know that's not true, you saw what happened, Bella made this decision for her."

"Whatever, Alice, just get us to the airport. I need to get help to free Bella."
