~~~Chapter Sixteen~~~
~~~Previous~~~

"Anyhow, since my plans are ruined, I'll just have to kill all of you," Kirihara says as he points at us.

"What? Kill us all?" Yako exclaims, surprised.

I let out a sigh. "They are all the same. Always resorting to threats."

"This massacre will be seen as Kishi's wrath, and it will be widely broadcasted-ki! Then, I will sell this whole town as a holy spot-ki!" He holds a bone in the air. A blast of wind surrounds him, causing everyone to cover their faces. I sense Neuro disappear from my side, no doubt to eat the mystery.

The wind disappears. "Wh-What?!" Ishigaki questions.

Neuro appears at my side once more as Kirihara drops to his knees and then falls onto his face. Neuro acts innocent and moves around my back. "What happened? Don't tell me it's the Dragon God's punishment. That's so harsh!"

Eventually, with everything solved, we get back to the car and continue to drive home. The radio is on as we do. "'Mayor Kirihara, who was arrested, kept on telling the police 'I saw Kishi!' 'This is Kishi's divine punishment.'"

"But, thanks to this, Kishi became famous." Yako points out. "The outcome made the town better, too."

"What are you talking about?" Godai demands. "How can a dragon really exist?" Godai, all of a sudden, lets out a yell.

"What is it?" Yako questions, leaning close.

Godai points out his window. "There's a dragon in the lake!"

"You're joking, where?! There's nothing..." Yako trails off.

"No, No, No! There is! I saw it with my own eyes!" Godai denies.

"It might be a worm or something like that." Yako teases.

"I don't have a damn worm!" Godai shouts, causing me to laugh.

Neuro once again rests his head in my lap as I run my fingers through his hair. He seems to relax more and fall asleep quicker when I do. I listen to Yako and Godai argue as we drive the rest of the way home.

~~~Present~~~
~~~3rd POV~~~

An image of a brain appears as a man discusses it. "The creation of the intelligence is similar to the creation of the creature itself. The fact that both are created from nothing is unopposed. But what if we trace it? If it's possible to extract signals that the brain sends out, we can produce extreme intelligence rather easily."

The man has black hair and eyes, wearing a white shirt and black trousers. He uses a stick and points at the brain. "Now, when such extreme intelligence is created, what possibilities might it bring?" A smirk appears on his face. "I'm Sure you can imagine it."

~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
It wasn't long after I got to the office that I had to head out with Neuro and Yako to a crime scene. I wear my manatee, grey and black princess dress, and silver coat. Luckily, I did, especially when we got to the scene.
A fire was set, so there was plenty of ashes and soot on the ground. "I can feel a thick sense of mystery here."
"Isn't this just a simple fire? We'll be punished if we enter without asking!" Yako scolds.
"You can't come in here!" A male voice states from behind us.
"S-Sorry! We'll get out ASAP!" Yako says, panicked.
The detective snaps his fan shut before pointing at Yako. "You are the female high school detective- Katsuragi Yako-chan! I am your big fan!" He grabs a hold of Yako's hands and leans forward. "If you don't mind, we can investigate together!"
Yako looks at Neuro and me before looking back at the detective, laughing awkwardly. "It seems like everything is proceeding well."
We are now allowed over the yellow tape. The older detective tells us about the Crime behind us. "You mean this is what everyone's talking about, the serial arsons?" I question.
The detective keeps on snapping his fan open and closed. "The possibility is very big. It seems like a combustible, odourless liquid was used to cause the fire."
Neuro looks to the left. "The guest who lived in this one-person room found out too late, so he couldn't get out in time."
"Did everyone die? Yako questions, worried.
"Nope, not everyone. Even the inn didn't get totally burned down. The most affected place was near the emergency exit. The arsonist probably started the fire near the exit. Then used the back exit to leave by himself. There were eight people who were blocked from the exit. They received major injuries. There was also three lucky people; they were in rooms that were easy to escape from. They left using the normal exit and got saved." The detective comments.
"Where are these three lucky people?" Neuro queries.
"They're at the main office. Do you need to ask them anything?" He asks.
Neuro puts his hand on Yako's head and his other arm around my waist. "Let's have a look, Sensei, Yuuki."
"Y-Yeah.../Yeah." We both agree, Yako more hesitantly.
The first person we see has blonde hair and black eyes. He is wearing a green bandana, a long-sleeved top underneath a short-sleeved top, and grey pants. "Didn't I just tell you, people...Stop wasting my time! If I'm going to be late for work, I'll be screwed."
"I'll contact your workplace." The detective states.
"The moment I left the room, there was only fire in front of my eyes. It was actually a miracle that I could escape." He admits.
"It doesn't matter now." The other young man comments as he types on his laptop. "Please let us leave now. I was just charging my computer."
He has black hair. He wears black glasses, a green jacket, and light grey pants.
"You were just on the verge of death; how can you be so calm?" The detective questions.
He stops typing and looks up. "If you want to suspect me, go on. Since the fire has already been put out, that's enough, right? Im not interested in things that have ended."
The older gentleman in a brown suit is tugging on his green tie. "Both of you seem fairly relaxed. I'm still sweating from fear because of that incident."
The detective looks at Yako. "There you have it. Do you have any other questions?"
Yako has her arm crossed, her right hand on her chin. She makes a thinking sound, but Neuro speaks up. He waves his hand. "Nope. Sensei says that she's satisfied with just seeing the scene."
"Uh...Y-Yeah, t-that's it." Yako agrees hesitantly.
"Back to the scene, I think." I offer, causing Neuro to nod his head.
"But first, I would like to request all of you to go back to your rooms. Just entering the room shouldn't be a big deal." Neuro states.
"I don't mind, but...Is this what the detective-san wants?" The detective asks.
"Yep. This is Sensei's desire." Neuro agrees.
Yako pulls on Neuro's arm to whisper in his ear. "Hey, Neuro, is it OK to solve it?"
"I'm not interested in taking long walks before dining." His eyes glow his usual green. "This mystery is on the tip of my tongue."
We head back to the room near the emergency exit. "Ok, detective-san. You predicted the route that the arsonist took is the back exit."
"Is there a problem with that?" He questions.
"According to Sensei's reasoning, that possibility is close to zero. The back exit does not stand out anyhow. But there are big windows near it. Even if they ran right after they set the fire, you only need a few seconds to notice a fire beyond the windows. If the arsonist was seen by spectators, he would probably look suspicious to them, even if he tried not to. Don't you think the risk is too high?" Neuro comments.
The detective shuts his fan. "Then, if the escape route is not the back exit...Do you mean he walked out of the main exit as if nothing had happened?!"
"Exactly. He only needed to design it so that his room wouldn't be caught in the fire. Then he could pretend that he's a victim and escape." Neuro adds.
"Design?" He repeats.
Neuro walks forward, stepping in a puddle. "The arsonist probably lived in the room where the fire got through last. That means those three are probably suspects." He stops in front of one of the rooms and looks over the top, his eyes glowing green.
The culprit is…You!" Yako points at the young man with blonde hair.
"'Why am I the culprit?" He demands.
"'The culprit is you.' Neuro repeats. "That's what the route you planned told me."
"Don't fucking joke around! Don't tell me that you plan to make someone who barely escaped to your scapegoat?! I was just barely saved by chance. Why isn't it those two, but me?!" He shouts.
"That's exactly the point," I comment.
"This 'by chance' is where the problem is." Neuro walks around the front, stopping next to me. He holds his finger in the air. "It seems like a route that was discovered 'by chance.' But what if it was planned freely accordingly to the arsonist?"
"Planned freely? What do you mean?" The detective queries.
Neuro takes out a bottle from his pocket. He takes off the lid and pours in some liquid. "For example,' He appears behind Yako. "This gin is 96% alcohol. Dipping Sensei's hair tip in it." Yako's hair tip absorbs the gin. "Even though it seems like only the hair tip, but in reality," He lights her tip on fire, causing the fire to spread to the top of her head.
Yako lets out a yell. "Hot! Hot! Hot!"
A large smile appears on Neuro's face. "It'll all become obvious after you set the fire. The alcohol spreads close to the roots. If you pour the liquid into a crack in the floor, even if it's a small amount, it'll travel very far. This is what they mean by the 'spreading phenomenon.' The flooring here is perfect for this."
The fire has gone out on Yako's head. "M-My hair..."
Neuro crouches near the door. "There seems to be something stuck in the crack." He drags his finger along the crack. The ashes are resting on his fingertip. "There are some ashes left by something burnt. This is inflammable asbestos."
"Asbestos?" The detective questions.
"When the flammable liquid met the asbestos in the crack, it changed direction. If you repeat this over and over, from the origin, the back exit. Not only the direction but even the speed of the liquid and the strength of the fire can be controlled. The liquid, which has its ending point decided, flows freely into the cracks. That's what Sensei says." Neuro finishes.
The blonde-haired young man looks shocked and speechless. Neuro continues explaining the Crime. "The reason why Sensei discovered the asbestos is she noticed that there were places that were not burnt, not without unburnt fuel. Not everything was flowing according to the plan. These two were very lucky to be where the flow wasn't expected. But your room was different. You made the back exit seem like it was the origin of the fire. Because you wanted to make yourself look like a victim, so you had to wait until the fire spread. But to make that easy, you'd have to start the fire from your room. According to those few points, by finding the location of the asbestos and watching the network of water that forms in the cracks. The same answer will be found."
Looking at the suspect's face, I could tell that Neuro was hitting all the marks, easily pointing him as the person who started the fire.
"By making the starting point for the fire in front of your room and then calling yourself 'Lucky' at the same time, you left the room just in time. From the people who were saved, the only room that met the requirements was your room." Neuro leans close to his face.
The suspect begins to laugh awkwardly, head bowed. "This is weird. Suddenly, I feel like putting glasses on." He puts on a pair of circular glasses with a thick frame. He throws up the bottom of his top. "I suddenly feel like tucking my shirt into my pants." He does. "I suddenly feel like putting on my bandana differently." He puts it across his forehead. "And suddenly, I feel like burning everything to ashes!" He presses the lever, causing a fire to shoot out. "Burn! BURN!"
"Burn...that's the wrong meaning..." Yako points out.
"Yeah…" I trail off, sweatdropping.
"Burn! BURN! Surrounded by flames...Burn! BURN!" He presses the lever, and it shoots toward a police officer. It covers him before he can move out of the way. "He's burning...It feels so good. The smooth flame, those sexy outlines. It's so close, and it's big...amazing."
"Burning sexily?" Yako sweatdrops.
"So, you people should burn too! I will make you all into 'Moe' characters as well." He lets out a laugh and licks his lips.
I looked to see that the detective had put out the fire that was burning the police officer. The other officer helps the injured officer and walks toward the door.
"Why?! I'm asking why did you do it! Because of you, there are many people who are hurt!" Yako demands.
"You ask me why?" He puts his hand on his head. "Didn't I tell you?! The reason for burning things, is...No matter how you say it...Umm...What was it again?" He looks down at the flamethrower in a panic. "Wait, I can't make sense out of the situation. When did I start to like fire? When was it? Hey, you!" He turns to look at Neuro. "Tell me! Why do I like doing these kinds of things? If you don't tell me, I'll burn you!"
He presses the lever, and the fire is shot towards Neuro. Neuro holds out his hand before him, not getting burnt at all. "How the hell should I know." The fire is sent back towards him instead. He falls to the floor, yelling for help. The detective is quick to try and put the fire out with his suit jacket.
"Oh...did the flamethrower malfunction? Humans are really scary creatures." Neuro comments sarcastically.
The detective puts the fire out. "What's wrong with you? There should be a limit on how HIGH you can get."
The young man with black hair steps forward. "Detective-san, please let me participate in this investigation."
"You are a normal citizen." The young man takes out a badge and lifts his glasses. "What?! You're a detective...?!"
"Eh, detective? You're a detective-san, and you ignored what happened in front of you?!" Yako exclaims, surprised.
"I'm a speciality. And participating won't have any meaning." He comments.
The older detective swipes his badge out of his hand. "Is this identification real? You sure don't look like a detective."
The young detective crosses his arms over his chest with his eyes closed. "You can go to the police station and ask for verification from Usui-san. I was just lazy, so I let you people take me in a suspect."
"The Usui-san you're talking about is THAT Usui-san?" Yako queries.
He opens his eyes to look at Yako. "I've heard about you, Katsuragi Yako. You always barge in during the critical moments. The weird detective, that's you. Today, you provoked the arsonist with your idiocy. Who cares about the reason why he arsons? Most criminals do it because they just want to do it. But this seems pretty interesting." He closes one of his eyes, a smile on his face. "Next time we meet, we shouldn't talk about this. Let's just go and have coffee or something. See you." He waves as he steps over the suspect's body and heads towards the door.
The older detective follows after him. "Hey, wait a sec!"
"He's different from most of the policemen I know." Neuro comments.
"So true." Yako agrees.
"He seems interesting," I add softly.
I head back to the office with Neuro while Yako heads to the hospital as Sasazuka is finally being released.
~~~3rd POV~~~

Yako opens the box of snacks and lets out a sigh when there is only one left. "I did it again…"

In a hospital room, Sasazuka is putting his belongings into his case. "Are you really fit to be discharged, Senpai?" Ishigaki queries.

"Yea…I'm good." Sasazuka closes his case. He turns to look at the detective at the crime scene earlier. "Hey Higuchi, what's the important thing you wanted to talk about?"

He holds up his laptop. "There's something really bad lurking around."

"Excuse me…" Yako calls out.

"Yako-chan." Sasazuka says back.

"Ehm..." Yako lowers the snack box. "Congratulations on your discharge." Yako looks up and sweatdrops.

"You didn't have to come in…" Sasazuka trails off.

Usui pushes up the bottom of his glasses. "Detective, huh?" He lets out a scoff. "Just when we were going to discuss something big."

"Yo, Katsuragi. We meet again." Higuchi holds up three fingers as he speaks.

Yako lets out a gasp when she sees him. "You really are a policeman!"

"He's a special division," Sasazuka adds.

"Special Division?" Yako queries. "Actually, someone who is amazing…"

Usui turns to look at her. "If you're finished here, hurry up and leave."

"Usui-san, I want to consult her for her opinions," Higuchi states, getting their attention. "The arsonist from before, did you feel anything from him? A different feeling from other criminals."

Yako lowers her head and places her thumb and finger on her chin. "Yeah, I felt weird…The criminals we've met so far, no matter if they're good or bad…They've felt that they had something really important to them in their hearts. Planning everything before committing the Crime. But this arsonist didn't have anything like that. A feeling that he's forced to act it out."

Higuchi lifts his glasses. "Exactly as she said. The number of Criminals who blatantly act out their scenes are rising."

"Forced acts…" Sasazuka trails off.

"Electronic Drug. That's what I call it." Higuchi states.

Electronic Drug?" Ishigaki repeats. "That's a somewhat cool name!"

"A few criminals in prison they heavily desired access to a computer. Under my order, I let them have access to one, then, they hurried to punch in this address, and, like they're possessed by something, staring at some footage." Higuchi opens his laptop. "The footage is this."

He plays it, and at first, it is pixels with distant letters in the background before it changes into colour and code, which assembles into a red apple. An eye appears on the apple, which opens before it disappears. A pixel-like screen appears again, and a male figure is seen briefly before it flickers out, and the letter H, A, and L appears on top of each other.

"What was that?!" Usui demands.

Higuchi crosses his arms across his chest. "Criminals who have watched this image have an abnormal amount of brain narcotics." He opens his eyes.

"Brain Narcotics…" Yako repeats.

"In this high feeling, the endocrine glands react and excrete morphine 6.5 times regular…allowing it to excrete makes it an amazing drug." Higuchi places a finger on his forehead. "The footage I just showed up was heavily cut. So, it should be okay. This footage probably commands the release, the desire to commit crimes inside their hearts."

Usui looks at him. "Commands?"

"People who watched this footage, their deep desires get instantly released. Destroying the lock of correct reasoning." Higuchi adds.

"That means the chance of committing crimes is higher?" Usui queries.

Higuchi nods his head as a smile appears on his face. "Amazing. If they don't have a certain amount of knowledge, it's impossible to reach this step. This is a 'Criminal Creating Program.'

"'Criminal Creating…' Yako trails off, not noticing the eyeball poking out of her hair.

~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
Neuro is sitting up at his desk. I was about to sit on the other chair when Neuro pulled me onto his lap. I couldn't help but blink a few times before shrugging it off and resting my head on his collarbone, letting myself get comfortable.
"I see," Neuro speaks up. "Electronic Drugs? What a strange scent." Godai is reading a paper, whistling. Neuro helps me off his lap before heading over to Godai. "Hey, Servant Number Two."
Godai looks up, surprised. "What is it?"
"Use your special underground relationships to find someone who excels in neuroscience." Neuro orders.
"Neuroscience?" Godai questions, but he gets up to do as he is asked.
~~~3rd POV~~~

~~~University Building~~~
"Finally finished…" A man comments as he stands inside a dark room filled with computers. "A program that is used to bypass the program that is protecting the brain." He looks at the computer in front of him. "Ok, I'll leave it all to you. Your powers have increased. Our research is enough." He turns his body fully. "But it seems like someone discovered the program's existence."
A pixel-like figure is inside the screen. "Yeah, but for our goal, we will not screw up."
The man sits down and types away on his computer before a sound escapes his throat, and his eyes widen. "What's with this data?"
"What?" The pixel-like figure asks.
"Other than people who were researched, there are 100, no 200. There are a lot of people watching this program. And this includes illegal weapon trading. Why are they acting without my orders? If the program, weapons, and the ammunition appear in this country at the same time, the country is finished."
Footsteps are heard before a figure appears behind the man. "Professor."
He stands up and looks at the younger man with grey hair, and one eye is glowing red. "What is it?" He turns away. "Didn't I tell you not to come in by yourself?"
"Professor." The man repeats.
"I don't have time to listen to your bullshit now." The professor scolds.
"Professor." A female calls out.
He abruptly turns around. "Shut up!" He looks up and sees a female standing at the top of the stairs.
"Professor!" The female shouts as she jumps from the top of the stairs, knife held in her mouth, heading straight towards the professor, her eyes also red.
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~

He comes back later with a name. We end up going there as Yako is back. Godai drives us to a university. Godai is breathing on his car and wiping it with his leather jacket sleeve. "There's a professor called Haruka Eisuke here. He seems really professional in that field."

"Don't be so full of yourself after receiving some small news. You're still not good enough." Neuro insults.

Godai turns and points at Neuro. "Get back yourself!" Godai laughs. "Owned!"

Neuro, with a smirk, holds up the car key. Godai stops laughing, surprised. "When did you get it?"

Neuro points back. "No, you should walk back to the office." With that said, he walks towards the university, his arm again around my waist.

"Damnit...I will kill you one day." Godai curses.

We walk inside a room with a lot of monitors. We walk around the corner and stop. Yako lets out a gasp. "Th-This person is..."

"It looks like it's Professor Haruka." Neuro comments.

"Is he dead?" Yako asks.

"It looks like it," I mutter, eyes glowing green.

"Humans are really fragile creatures." Neuro walks towards the body.

Yako moves behind my back. "Who could have done it...? It wasn't easy to get a trace of the Electronic Drug." A figure appears on the computer screen, and Neuro's hair tip floats. "What is it?"

"You want to invite me?" He takes off his right glove. "I'll gladly accept that invitation." He presses his hand on the screen, and there is a bright green light.

~~~3rd POV~~~
Neuro opens his eyes to see him standing in the middle of a carousel. The horse-like creatures abruptly turn their heads towards Neuro and release pink-like energy beams toward him. Neuro jumps in the air, and the energy connects, causing them to explode.
An object lunges past Neuro, causing him to look up to see a bird-like creature in the sky flying toward him. Neuro moves his hand to the side, and it changes into a blade. A bird-like creature flies towards him, and he slices it in half, followed by the other, before landing on a pyramid-like object at the top.
Neuro looks up at a large black object in front of him before a male voice speaks up. "I never would've thought that someone could get into this world."
"I am Nougami Neuro. Are you Haruka Eisuke?" Neuro queries.
A figure walks out of the shadows which looks exactly like Haruka Eisuke. "Nope, my name is Denjin HAL. The persona program that Haruka Eisuke created from his own brain waves."
"Denjin," Neuro repeats before letting out a scoff. "Did you kill the original Haruka?"
"Yes, but to be precise, it was my servants who killed him." He admits.
"People controlled by the Electronic Drug?" Neuro questions.
"Yes." He agrees. "I am immortal in a world of binary, but in the world of 3D, I am nothing more than a box. So, I need real people who can protect my identity as my arms and legs. Desires and wishes are the sources of a human thoughts and actions. Simply put, I used the footage to hook them up in their desires, creating another persona in their brain. This is what Haruka and I have completed. A program which you people call the 'Electronic Drug.' Extreme acts of violence is a sign before the persona splits. According to different acts of violence, I can create different types of armies."
"But no matter how many armies you create, if your main body is destroyed, you won't exist anymore." Neuro points out.
"It is impossible to find the real me." He is standing at the top of a pyramid with three large sphinxes. "As long as these three assisting programs stay by me. No matter how intelligent you are. You can never get to me." He clicks his fingers.
The bird-like creatures come from the sphinxes. They all release the pink-like energy toward Neuro. Neuro hands become a shield that he uses to block their attacks.
"I must now leave this place." He smirks. "But I will not be destroyed because of someone's interference." Blue energy blasts are released from the sphinxes and sent towards Neuro. It surrounds Neuro, and when it disappears, Neuro is gone. Haruka holds up his arm, which flickers. "That proved it. In the world of binary, I am invincible." A triangle similar to what Neuro wears slowly disintegrates. "Goodbye, Neuro."
