~~~Chapter Seventeen~~~
~~~Previous~~~
~~~3rd POV~~~
Neuro opens his eyes to see him standing in the middle of a carousel. The horse-like creatures abruptly turn their heads toward Neuro and release pink-like energy beams toward him. Neuro jumps in the air, and the energy connects, causing them to explode.
An object lunges past Neuro, causing him to look up to see a bird-like creature in the sky flying toward him. Neuro moves his hand to the side, and it changes into a blade. A bird-like creature flies towards him, and he slices it in half, followed by the other, before landing on a pyramid-like object at the top.
Neuro looks up at a large black object in front of him before a male voice speaks up. "I never would've thought that someone could get into this world."
"I am Nougami Neuro. Are you Haruka Eisuke?" Neuro queries.
A figure walks out of the shadows and looks exactly like Haruka Eisuke. "Nope, my name is Denjin HAL. The persona program that Haruka Eisuke created from his own brain waves."
"Denjin," Neuro repeats before letting out a scoff. "Did you kill the original Haruka?"
"Yes, but to be precise, it was my servants who killed him." He admits.
"People controlled by the Electronic Drug?" Neuro questions.
"Yes." He agrees. "I am immortal in a world of binary, but in the world of 3D, I am nothing more than a box. So, I need real people who can protect my identity as my arms and legs. Desires and wishes are the sources of human thoughts and actions. Simply put, I used the footage to hook them up in their desires, creating another persona in their brain. This is what Haruka and I have completed. A program which you people call the 'Electronic Drug.' Extreme acts of violence is a sign before the persona splits. According to different acts of violence, I can create different types of armies."
"But no matter how many armies you create, if your main body is destroyed, you won't exist anymore." Neuro points out.
"It is impossible to find the real me." He is standing at the top of a pyramid with three large sphinxes. "As long as these three assisting programs stay by me. No matter how intelligent you are. You can never get to me." He clicks his fingers.
The bird-like creatures come from the sphinxes. They all release the pink-like energy toward Neuro. Neuro hands become a shield that he uses to block their attacks.
"I must now leave this place." He smirks. "But I will not be destroyed because of someone's interference." Blue energy blasts are released from the sphinxes and sent towards Neuro. It surrounds Neuro, and when it disappears, Neuro is gone. Haruka holds up his arm, which flickers. "That proved it. In the world of binary, I am invincible." A triangle similar to what Neuro wears slowly disintegrates. "Goodbye, Neuro."
~~~Present~~~
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
Neuro is suddenly thrown from the computer, his back crashing into the bookcase behind us. I rush over to Neuro's side, kneeling next to him. "Neuro!" I call out.
"What happened? What happened in there?" Yako asks, panicked.
Neuro lifts his head. "I can't win. In my current situation, I'm not qualified to eat this mystery. As long as that Denjin HAL is there..."
"Denjin HAL." Both Yako and I repeat.
"Even though I reached the last wall of the security system...I got attacked from all three sides. Everyone has a stage where they can perform their best. For birds, it's the sky. For fish, it's water. For humans, it's on Earth. For demons, it's the demon world. And the cyber world is undoubtedly the home ground for Denjin HAL." Neuro admits.
"Denjin HAL," Yako repeats before looking at the computer screen. The fuzzy image of a man appears before disappearing.
~~~Next Day~~~
~~~3rd POV~~~
~~~Inside the Police Station~~~
Sasazuka, Ishigaki, Higuchi, Usui, and the man with him meet in one of the meeting rooms and sit down at one of the tables.
"Senpai, shouldn't you rest a little bit more?" Ishigaki questions as he looks at Sasazuka.
"It's nothing, don't worry." Sasazuka denies.
"There is no time to stay in a hospital for such small injuries." Usui comments. "We must somehow find a solution to the Electronic Drugs. The more people who see that program, the closer this country comes to dystopia. If we don't allow the police to use strong weapons, the country will become a mess."
Sasazuka lowers his head slightly. "Exactly as you said."
"But, I think the Electronic Drug is not fully completed yet," Higuchi says, getting their attention. "There are still some flaws."
Ishigaki leans forward. "Really?"
"To fully come under the effect, it requires time and several views." Higuchi points out.
"What are you trying to say?" Usui demands.
Higuchi lifts his glasses. "Simply put, before the perfect Electronic Drug is completed, we find the origin of the drug, then write a vaccine program to counter it."
"Can you do it, Higuchi?" Usui questions.
Higuchi closes his laptop and stands up. "Bring it on." He holds up his laptop. "Challenging a true genius, I'm a bit excited."
~~~At the Office~~~
~~~Yako's POV~~~
I sit in my chair and can't help by look at Neuro. "Neuro couldn't eat the mystery…Maybe he's mourning over the failure. He's sleeping pretty soundly…"
I grab a pen and sneak over to Neuro with a smile.
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
I get to the office to see Yako standing beside Neuro, pen in her hand. "It's payback time."
Neuro abruptly stands up. "Mourning over the failure, you say? Are you joking? There's no win and lose to eating." He grabs the pen out of her hand, pushes her to the ground, and draws on her face. "It's not a matter of winning or losing but eat or be eaten." Neuro walks towards the window and looks outside. "Exactly as the saying 'the fittest will survive.'"
Neuro has written 'I am a pet, a pig' on her face, along with a flower, a cat, and a skull. "That's true..." Akane gets a bottle for Yako. She dips her handkerchief inside and rubs it on her face.
"If a hedgehog's spines are too annoying, just cut them off." Neuro comments.
"Hedgehog? Cutting the spines?" Yako questions.
Neuro ignores her. "First, the sphinx trio must be destroyed."
"Sphinx?" I query.
"Disturbing data is emitted strongly from all three sides. To produce such a large amount of data, teraflops of calculation speed is needed." Neuro adds.
Yako has nearly removed all the markings from her face. "That means you need a special computer."
"Exactly. A supercomputer." Neuro looks at Yako before looking back out the window.
"But where can you find one of those?" Yako asks.
"Even if it's hidden, compared to HAL's defences, its defences must be fairly weak. And compared to normal computers, there are not many." Neuro states.
"I think there are less than 4, but not sure," I add.
"No matter how rare, we don't even know the address." Yako points out, removing the last of the pen from her face.
Neuro turns to look at us. "I just told Servant Number Two to investigate it. If he finds the location of the supercomputer, those three machines are a major roadblock in getting to HAL's mystery. Destroying them will be enough..."
"I see." Yako acknowledges.
"There will be high protection put in place, though." I point out.
"The bigger the mystery, the higher the chance of failure and the worthiness of a challenge. Let's go, Yako, Yuuki. The real battle starts now." Neuro orders as he walks towards the door.
~~~At the University~~~
~~~3rd POV~~~
Inside a room, there is a large group of people watching a projector screen with a single man looking the other way, showing his back towards the screen. They are watching the Electronic Drug program.
"Our master HAL is invincible on the internet. And in the real world, it is our job to protect our master." The grey-haired man comments.
Abruptly, they all take out guns. "Come and try if you can; we're the ones who're protecting the sphinx programs."
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
~~~Future Physics Research Center~~~
We went to the FPRC as Neuro got the information that he needed from Godai. "Future Physics Research Center. They have a supercomputer here which acts as a physics simulator."
"The Sphinx is in here?" Yako questions.
"According to Servant Number Two, a lot of people who come here daily are not on the list of researchers." Neuro walks towards the door, and I follow.
Yako runs to catch up. "That means those people are protecting it."
"Exactly. It's not much different from an army now." Neuro comments.
"A large army that might have access to a weapon," I add with a sigh.
"Ehm, aren't I useless? If there's a battle, I won't be able to do anything. I'll just become a burden." Neuro doesn't say anything but hides behind Yako. Yako hits her fist against her palm. "I get it! You can use me as a shield!" She hits him on the forehead with her hand.
Neuro smirks from behind Yako as a man with grey hair and a brown-red and red-eye walks towards us. "So, it looks like the army has decided to show itself." He pulls out two guns and points them at us. "Are these your only weapons?"
"Neuro, take this seriously." I scolded with a frown on my face.
"If HAL hadn't discovered me, I would've been an assassin. Everyone admires guns. They're beautiful and powerful weapons. People who love them so much and collect Model guns and such eventually meet. I want to shoot at a real human. HAL provided me with guns and subordinates who pursue the same dreams."
"I see. To protect such an important place, you guys are best fitted for the job." Neuro comments.
He points the guns at Neuro. "Neuro, we're here to delete you."
There are two shots fired from behind, grazing Neuro's shoulder and the right side of his head. "Neuro!" I yell along with Yako.
"We know from the data HAL gave us that you're much more than a human." The man continues.
Neuro touches his face, blood on his glove as he removes his hand.
"But that doesn't matter. If we keep away and fire from a distance, you'll die sometime." The man adds.
Neuro grabs hold of the back of Yako's coat as he runs. I run as soon as he does and stay at the side.
"Do you think we'll let you run? You're inside the palm of the Sphinx." The man states as he runs after us.
As we get down another path, Neuro throws Yako. She lands inside the bin. I hide behind the same bin as Neuro continues to run past. Several brainwashed people hang out the windows via their legs and shoot at Neuro.
"After brainwashing, my army of men have bypassed the limits of shooting after synchronising with the supercomputer, the Sphinx." The three men jump to the ground. "Sending electronic signals directly to the brain with enemies' location and status. The rest is basically all automatic. Totally focused on shooting."
I look to the left when I sense some presence getting closer. A group walked over and surrounded the bins where Yako and I were. "Yuuki-nee…" Yako trails off, scared.
I send her a smile. "It will be fine, Yako. Stay inside the bin, okay?"
Yako hesitantly nods her head as I turn to look at the men and narrow my eyes. There are too many for me to knock out myself, especially as they have guns…which means I will need to use my magic and physical attacks… a good thing Yako knows I have magic, even though I don't use it much.
I close my eyes and sigh before opening them and rushing toward the men. They all release a shot from their guns. My eyes flash, and the bullets are frozen in place as I continue to rush forward. While they are slightly distracted, one by one, I hit the back of their necks, causing them to fall unconscious and fall to the ground.
I sighed and looked back to where Neuro ran off as the man continued to brag. "The calculations of the CPU, with the auto-aim system." Neuro is hit again. "It's impossible for HAL to lose." Neuro comes to a stop, and he is slowly surrounded. "The Sphinx program was written to protect every part of HAL." Bullets after bullets are fired into his body. "No matter if it's on the net or real life, we'll have to destroy you.
"Neuro..." I mutter with Yako, worried.
"61 bullets fired and hit. It's time for you to stop moving." Neuro looks up, causing Yako to sigh, but I couldn't help but sigh, even though I know he is fine. "You should be honoured; HAL is expecting more out of you than anyone on earth. Recording that, if you're dead, there will be no one to interfere with HAL."
"I see. Then, all of you should continue shooting. If your master HAL's calculations are correct, you can kill me just like that." Neuro comments.
"Oh, by the way, there's no chance of us killing each other." He says before they all shoot.
A smirk appears on Neuro's face before he removes something from his jacket. "777 Tools of Demon World," He presses the button, and there is a bright light. When it disappears, there is a huge ball in an egg shape. "Evil Reflector." It opens, a woman's head pops out, and mirrors surround Neuro. "The thing that comes, at the speed it came, at the same direction it came from, completely reflected. A tool just for this purpose."
The bullets are fired back into the guns, causing all of them to explode. "You didn't really show anything special." All of them fall to their knees, their hands injured. "If it's used against one single person, it'll just raise his defences, creating problems. I was waiting for all of you to shoot at the same time. You guys are the ones who were in my palm." All of his wounds glow green and disappear, leaving no blood behind. "Let's go, Yako, Yuuki."
"HAL. HAL, are you watching? This guy can even do things like that...The two remaining sphinx should get a version upgrade!" The man shouts.
"Version upgrade?" Yako and I share a look before I help her out of the bin. We run to catch up with Neuro, who has already started to walk ahead.
~~~3rd POV~~~
Inside a room, Higuchi is typing away on his laptop. "Electronic Drug has two programs, an advanced one for druggies and a beginner one for newbies. If I can understand these two programs, it'll be easy to write a vaccine program."
He lets out a short laugh. "I understand you, Haruka. You're just impatient, aren't you? You just want to see a world full of crime. But, sorry. I will end your existence." A smirk appears on his face.
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
We head inside the building and reach the supercomputer, where HAL awaits. "I'm amazed, even if I can beat you in the data world. It seems it'll be harder in the real world. You really are something. It's just a matter of time before you destroy these, but before that, I want to ask you something. Who are you? And why do you want to attack me?"
Neuro changes into his true form. "I'm a demon from Hell. My food is the very mazes that protect evil, the mystery. If I can destroy the data which is protecting your mystery, I can fill my empty stomach." His head returns to normal.
"Demon? I see. That explains your several superhuman powers. But that shows to fill your stomach means destroying me. Because of that, the remaining sphinx will do their best to kill you." Haruna comments.
"What's your motive?" Yako suddenly asks. "Professor Haruka was technically your father, but why did you have to kill him? You're controlled so many, hurt so many, what's the point of doing all these things?"
He is silent before speaking. "To clarify first, Haruka's goal is the exact same as mine."
"Same?" I question softly.
"To survive. To live eternally in the world of ones and zeros." Haruka states.
"Survive," Yako repeats.
"But this is possible for me. For him, impossible. If we don't reach this goal, it's the same as death to us. He is well aware of that, and I set him free before despair won over denial." Yako lets out another gasp. "You will never get it, so just shut up and watch Katsuragi Yako like a powerless doll. I'm not interested in taking you over. Because to me, there's no one except Neuro who shows signs of danger. Then Neuro, you've won this time. You can do anything you want to the computer in front of you. But the next Sphinx won't be the same." The screen shuts off.
"Then, let's get started on destroying this," Neuro states as he walks forward.
"I'm just a doll," Yako murmurs.
Neuro turns to look at her. "Don't worry, you can destroy it too."
He puts a barrel over Yako before picking her up by her feet. He swings her around in the air. He moved her through the air at his sides, destroying the monitor.
I let out a sigh. "Honestly, Neuro." I scold.
~~~3rd POV~~~
Inside a dark room, there is a set of computers, and HAL is on one of the screens; the female who killed Haruka is standing in front of him, a knife in her hand. "Please wait, HAL!"
"I don't think you can become my shield. Because of that, Ezaki Shiho will take the job." HAL states.
"How come?!" She exclaims, surprised.
"I found someone better than you." HAL lifts his hand and a purple energy crackles around the screen.
The female leans forward. "I beg you, HAL! I promise I will…" She is cut off when HAL holds a finger that says 'OFF' in red. He clicks his fingers, and her eyes widen. The knife falls from her hand and clatters on the ground. She falls to her knees before falling forward.
"If he has the intelligence, he can beat that demon," HAL comments.
Back with Higuchi, he is still typing away on his laptop. HAL appears on his screen. "I have yet to introduce myself, Higuchi Yuuya. My name is Denjin HAL."
"Denjin HAL," Higuchi repeats.
The Electronic Drug appears on the screen as HAL continues to speak. "I, who live in this dimension, can gather information instantly. I was shocked. Who would've thought a hacker like you existed in the police? The first time you hacked was when you were 11. After that, you've done a lot of damage to my world. The almost impossible to trace genius. Finally, your heart harbours a heavy desire for crime. My electronic drug will work perfectly with your brain."
The program finishes, and Higuchi abruptly stands, breathing heavily. "Welcome, Higuchi Yuuya. Okay, it's time for you to lend your abilities to me. You can help me like that."
Higuchi lifts his head to show a large smile, and one of his eyes is glowing red, just like the others under HAL's control.
"I now declare you the new protector of the Sphinx, Higuchi Yuuya," HAL states.
"Your electronic drug can become even better." Higuchi comments.
"Yeah. Exactly as I thought." HAL agrees. "You're worthy to place my faith on, after all."
~~~Yokoshima Port~~~
A ship was heading towards the land, where there was a large group of protestors gathering. "Stop the warship from docking!" A man shouts.
"Get the fuck back to your own country, Oswald!" Another man curses.
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
~~~Back at the Office~~~
We all watch the TV as it shows what is happening at the docks. "At the moment, there is a large strike occurring to stop the nuclear warship 'Oswald' from docking in Yokoshima Port." The woman on the TV lets out a gasp. "What's happening?! The people are attacking each other! The strike has become chaos!"
The woman screams before the camera is knocked over, and the connection is lost, causing the screen to lose the image.
Godai lowers his magazine. "What happened?!"
"Electronic Drug," Yako mutters.
"It's getting worse. HAL has up his control." I point out as I look at Yako. She nods before we share a sigh. "It's going to get worse before it gets better," I add.
Godai makes a phone call. "Yeah, yeah. Really? Got it. I've got news on the second supercomputer."
"Really?" Yako queries.
We head over to a large building in the car. "So, the second supercomputer is in here..." Yako trails off.
There is a loud beeping sound before a truck crashes through the car park barrier and drives off down the road. "That's Higuchi-san," Yako exclaims surprised.
"So, the second supercomputer is inside there..." Neuro comments.
"Why...Higuchi-san...?!" Yako trails off.
~~~3rd POV~~~
~~~Inside the Police Station~~~
"You still can't contact Higuchi?" Ishigaki questions.
"He probably got affected by the electronic drug." Usui points out.
"What?!" Ishigaki exclaims, surprised.
Sasazuka looks at Usui before looking away and gazing at the ground. "Higuchi."
~~~Yuuki's POV~~~
"Higuchi-san is affected by electronic drug..." Yako continues in disbelief.
"He was trying to make a vaccine, which means he watched it too many times and was finally drawn in," I comment as I gaze off in the direction that he went. "HAL must have gotten through to him."
Neuro grabs Yako and throws her in the car; simultaneously, he pushes Godai out. I quickly get inside and close the door. Godai hits the window. "Hey, you! What the hell are you doing?!"
Neuro flicks the window, putting his finger through to point at Godai, smashing it slightly. "You're on house duty," Neuro states before driving off.
Neuro drives fast down the road, swerving around the other vehicles. "Hey, Neuro, do you have a driver's license?!" Yako exclaims.
Neuro ignores her. "But what do you plan to do? By calculating the speed of these two vehicles, us, with shorter turns, will reach them first. And in this complex city, he already has something planned."
"A trap…it must be a trap to lure us into his chosen area." I point out.
All the traffic lights turn green, and Neuro quickly drives past. I sense people behind us at the same time Yako looks and lets out a gasp. "Neuro, there's an army of people on bicycles!"
"Oh, so you're playing dirty," Neuro comments with a smirk.
I move closer to the front of the car just before two men in suits smash through the back window. "Neuro! Some of them are jumping in!" I warn.
The two men stand up and pull up the car roof. Neuro smirks before taking something out of his jacket. "777 Tools of Demon World, Evil Surrounder!" He breaks the window and throws the ball outside.
It hits the back of the car after splitting apart into smaller pieces. Each piece turns into a snake-like creature. Two of them grab hold of the two men and remove them from the car. "Feeding on metal, it protects us from enemies. A common home-grown vegetable from Hell."
We get rid of the people on bikes, but as the sun sets and we continue to follow the truck, people on motorbikes and bikes follow us, the person on the back holding a metal object. The person in front of us is swinging it near the front window.
"These guys are incredibly annoying... We can't chase Higuchi anymore." Neuro curses.
"What should we do?" Yako questions.
"I want to destroy him here and now, but..." Neuro looks at the bridge, surprised.
When we get near the bridge, Yako lets out a gasp. "No way! There's no bridge!"
Neuro hits the car's brakes, stopping at the beginning of the bridge. We go over, not stopping in time, making Yako scream.
~~~3rd POV~~~
The car went over, explodes causing a large cloud of smoke to rise into the air. Higuchi stands at the edge and looks down. "I don't know about the Katsuragi's, but Neuro should be alive. Assist me in delivering the final blow to him." Higuchi orders.
The control men form a ladder, and some climb down to make it to the bottom. "In the valley, where there's nowhere else to go, finish him off…I win, Neuro. He smirks and lets out a low chuckle.
