Ch 02
The sound of a clock could be heard ominously throughout the entire building. The room was dark and you could hear the sound of footsteps nearing. A man could vaguely be seen sitting at his desk. He looked impatient; he was tapping his finger onto his desk in rhythm with the clock as if waiting for something. A flash of light could be seen in the distant forest illuminating his room and surroundings for a moment.
"Finally," he said aloud as he gazed out the window
He didn't seem at all surprised or find it unusual; in fact, it seemed this was what he was waiting for. The man began to prepare to leave.
"It seems we have another piece coming onto the board." He said aloud. He grabbed the cane that was near him and walked out of his office.
He spoke to someone as he left his room "We have somewhere to be, get the airship ready for take-off."
"And where will we be heading?" A woman asked, looking annoyed at the sudden desire to travel.
"Only a short trip for a game of chess" he chuckled to himself. "I have to go pick up a pawn." The man walked out quickly with the woman turning and following behind him. He began heading to where the flash of light was.
Jaune did not know what he was expecting. It was bright and he couldn't see anything. He felt as though every part of himself was being thrown about and spun, he imagined that it would be similar to what a leaf would feel if it were in a tornado. The light dimmed and the spinning stopped, he could start to see the ground. Jaune was feeling very disoriented at the moment, the ground felt like it was an ocean. He held his stomach, it felt like it was upside down and tightened in a knot. Jaune vomited onto the ground. It was hard for him to breathe. He began to take in shallow quick gulps trying to recover from the journey. Stuck in a fit of panic he tried to prevent himself from hyperventilating
"I don't ever want to do that again," Jaune said aloud "that was horrible." unable to describe in words what he had just experienced. Jaune held desperately onto his backpack for dear life as if his life depended on it; he was sitting down so that he didn't fall over. He waited until his head wasn't spinning and began to focus on his surroundings.
It was dark and harder for Jaune to see his surroundings, he could see the moon in the distance. Jaune gasped, marveling at what he saw. the moon could be seen brightly in the sky but it was as if parts had been broken into pieces and hung around it. The moon illuminated some of his surroundings but not everything. From what he could make out there was a large amount of trees surrounding him. Jaune grabbed his backpack searching for a flashlight. His light wasn't too bright and he couldn't make out his surroundings. He got up and looked for a tree that he could rest under.
Jaune was feeling very emotional. Remnant was a real place not just fiction. The moon was proof that he wasn't on earth anymore. It was hard to deny what he was seeing. Jaune looked around in awe that Remnant was real. The fact that his grandfather had been telling him stories all his life about this place. Jaune felt saddened for a moment. His grandfather was never able to share this with him.
Jaune could feel the wind bite at his face. He pulled his hood over himself to try and get warmer. He rummaged through his backpack thinking of his grandfather. He pulled out the guide used his flashlight to read the book. Welcome to Remnant, you are probably feeling very disoriented. Jaune stopped "Yeah, no kidding" He continued to read. He laughed out loud. He could almost see his grandfather smirk. He had a funny sense of humor.
"The best thing to do is find out where you are and get to the nearest city, be wary of wandering Grimm." Jaune could see a list of landmarks and places that could help. Jaune held the book out holding it sideways as if it would help.
Jaune lowered the book knowing full well he wouldn't be able to do anything. There was not much he could do because it was dark. Jaunes stomach growled. He frowned "I should have brought food, '' Jaune said. He curled up as tightly as he could, using the tree's large trunk as a shield from the cold wind. He quickly dozed off feeling beyond tired.
Jaune could feel the warm sun through the trees. He woke up now being able to see more clearly. He could see that what he thought was a trail was actually a dirt road. He got up wiping the dirt from off of himself and began to start walking. Jaune still had many thoughts going through his mind as he walked.
"Snap" Jaune stopped and tried to focus on the noise. He gulped remembering what the book said. He turned, seeing nothing. Jaune breathed a sigh of relief, not realizing he was holding his breath. "it was just my imagination, maybe it was just a rabbit" the forest seemed too quiet, there was not a single noise.
Crash, a giant dog burst out from the forest. It landed in front of Jaune and it growled. The temperature around it seemed to drop. "A Beowolf" Jaune muttered to himself and gulped. The Beowolf was hideous it was black with blood-red eyes. It had bones that were protruding out of its body. A smoky black mist seemed to hover just around it. It felt evil. Jaune did not have much time to admire the beast as It lunged towards Jaune. He screamed "That is not a rabbit" as he jumped to the side he bolted away, running as fast as he could. Jaune could feel the adrenaline in his body.
"Help" Jaune screamed, He knew that it was hopeless. But he still called out. He tried to pull at the sword that was sticking out of the bag as he ran, It didn't budge. The beast swiped its large claws at Jaunes back hitting him and knocking him forward onto the ground.
Jaune could smell the moss and dirt as he rolled. He got up as quickly as he could knowing his life depended on it, facing the beast. He could feel his heart racing, it felt as if it would beat out of his chest. Jaune attempted to grab the sword again as soon as he was up. The wolf began to creep slowly closer, baring its teeth. Jaune pulled his sword loose just as the Beowolf lunged towards him. He swung as hard as he could. It yelped as it was hit in the eye with the sword. The Beowolf howled in pain, It's eye was closed and bleeding It shook its head and glared at Jaune. Jaune stood now feeling more confident that it was wounded and was ready to face it. He was breathing hard not expecting this type of situation at all.
The Beowolf waited and circled around Jaune waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Jaune swung the sword in an attempt to scare it away. The Beowolf swiped the sword out of Jaunes hand and it landed out of reach. It began to bite Jaune. Jaune screamed in pain, and he kicked it off with all of his strength. Jaune began to scrounge in his backpack hoping for anything. His hands clasped around the sheath. "This is better than nothing" he said as he pulled it out. The Beowolf lunged forward towards Jaune, he stumbled backwards in an attempt to get away at the same time throwing the sheath in a last ditch attempt.
Jaune closed his eyes knowing full well that these were his last moments and was going to die. The shield went into the Beowolf open mouth. A mechanical noise could be heard then it was quiet. Jaune opened his eyes slowly. The Beowolf was laying in front of Jaune not moving, There was a shield embedded in its mouth. Holding it in an unnatural angle having been forced open far past its capabilities.
The wolf slowly began to dissolve and fade away like ash. Jaunes heart was still racing. He could feel something run down his face. He reached up and rubbed it off looking at his hand. It was covered in blood. Jaune could feel all of his strength leave as fell to the ground exhausted.
Jaune woke up to the smell of disinfectant. He looked around seeing what appeared to be a hospital room. It was clean as you would expect a hospital to be. Jaune coughed as he tried to get up his entire body felt sore. He groaned again as he attempted to move. He could hear someone coming.
A doctor in a suit came into the room holding a clipboard and he was an older man. He spoke "Hello my name is doctor Greene, How are you feeling?" he asked.
"I feel like I got hit with a sack of bricks." Jaune said as he tried to stretch.
Doctor Greene looked at Jaune and took a note. "it would be worse if you didn't feel pain" The doctor explained "It was a miracle that someone found you out there. There was a Retired hunter near where you were. He found you and brought you in."
Jaune nodded in agreement, happy to be alive, "I ran into some Grimm" Jaune said, remembering what they were called. The doctor nodded when he heard this, knowing that things like this happened frequently.
"What's your name?" he asked So we can see if we can find any information on you.
"My names Jaune, Jaune Arc" he responded.
The doctor's eyebrow lifted "Arc, huh, well that's a name I know." He quickly wrote down more notes.
"Really you know my family? Jaune asked surprised"
Doctor Greene quickly responded "not personally. I haven't personally met your family, just heard some rumors."
"oh," Jaune said feeling slightly down about that
The doctor noticed he looked down "Almost everyone has heard rumors of your family, your family is pretty famous." He laughed "it's a good rumor" "Mostly"
"I didn't know that," Jaune said genuinely surprised. He was surprised that his family was famous in a different world.
Doctor Greene spoke again putting the clipboard underneath his arm as he got up "Well, we will get you feeling better and you will be out before you know it." He began to leave but he looked back as if remembering something." Also the person that found you wanted to see how you were doing, is that okay?"
"Yeah that's fine,"
"Good I will let him know" The doctor left the room leaving Jaune alone in the room.
Jaune laid back into the bed and breathed a sigh of relief, "I'm alive." Memories of the Attack from the Beowulf flashed before Jaunes eyes. He touched his shoulder briefly, he could remember how real it felt as the beewolves teeth went into his shoulder. How unable he was to defend himself. Jaune shuddered thinking about it," I really should have listened to my dad." Jaune whispered to himself putting his face into his hands. His fathers words came back to mind, "I don't want to lose you too." Jaune sighed "I am so stupid, almost dying the moment I step foot here"
Jaune looked around the room "I wish I had something to do," He could see a couple of magazines and newspapers to his right. Jaune looked at them quickly, it read News of Vale. Young girl stops dust robbery, I would rather read comics He began to look for a comic section Jaune frowned when he could not see anything.
"Nevermind I am just going to wait." Jaune said bored as he threw it back on the desk. He heard a knock and the door opened. It was an older man with a beard and white hair. He was holding Jaunes backpack with him. He had a kind smile and he reminded Jaune of his grandfather.
The older man spoke, noticing Jaunes attention "How are you doing? "Jaune was it?" The older man stuck out his hand in a greeting
"yes, were you the one that found me, sir? Jaune said, shaking his hand. the older man's grip was ridiculous and Jaune shook his hand after. "Thank you for saving me."
The old man laughed at Jaunes as he shook his hand in pain. "Yup I am glad I did. I was just stopping by to see if everything was fine, and to drop off the things that were with you." He held up the back pack as he said this, he tossed the backpack to Jaune and asked him another question "What were you doing out there all by yourself?"
Jaune caught the back pack and then scratched the back of his head sheepishly trying to think of something "I don't think anyone would believe me if I said I came from a different world." quickly thinking of an excuse, then remembering the magazine "I was coming to Vale," Jaune said a little too quickly, he took a breath and continued "my grandfather sent me on this trip after he passed away. I wanted to learn more about Vale." Jaune was trying to not sound suspicious, but it came out awkwardly.
The older man Nodded "Were you planning on going to the academy? "I noticed you had a sword with you." He said, not noticing Jaune's nervousness.
Jaune was curious about what the older man had said "what's the academy?" he asked.
"Oh Beacon, it's a place to learn" The old man said smiling as if remembering fond memories. "I went there myself back in the day, It's where I met my wife" he paused and thought about something "that happens extremely frequently now that I think about it." "Huh" "Anyways Beacon is a place people like yourself go learn how to defend yourselves and learn a trade" He slapped Jaunes back "Enough about me so how many of the Grimm did you take down to get in the shape you were in. He laughed, "when I was younger I felt like I could take on hundreds."
Jaune felt very insecure that whatever he had fought against was apparently very weak. He shrugged, "just a few"
The older man laughed out loud" The old man patted Jaunes back as if knowing what had happened. Jaune smiled trying to not worry about it. "So Jaune do you have a place to stay, here in vale?" he asked curiously what he was going to be doing.
"Um no, I don't. I am kind of winging it." Jaune said sheepishly, realizing he had not planned very far in advance.
The older man laughed. "I like your style." The older man pointed to himself with another smile "You are free to stay at my place until the semester starts."
"I don't want to impose," Jaune said, feeling bad that the man that helped him was offering to help again.
"Nonsense, it is the least that I can do, I can pick you up when you are better and I can help you get settled and help you find a dorm room at the academy." "Here is my number if you need anything else" The older man quickly pulled out a card and handed it to Jaune.
"Thank you," Jaune said, grabbing the card with the number looking at it. The older man left waving to Jaune as he did.
"Welcome to Remnant," he said to himself falling back onto the bed. Jaune pulled open his backpack looking for the guide book. Finding nothing, Jaune could feel his chest tighten. He had lost the book from his grandfather. The only way of navigating this strange world and also the only way that told him how he could get home.
"How am I going to get home now?" Jaune thought to himself.
I will continue to update chapter and the next chapter will be when it is ready.
