Chapter 1: The tighter, the stronger

At a room in the storage construction

The slipping back to consciousness was slow and dragging way too long. It was like swimming and floating in nothingness; which was bizarre because your senses were practically dead. But the slight awareness was enough to stir a little bit of the life that was restrained there, in that small room. The sudden existing of light helped a lot too.

The data room

Frankenstein's eyes bulged a bit at the sight. How could there have been a human in the building for who-knows-how-long and still be alive? They certainly hadn't fed them and from the look of the room it sure wasn't designed to keep lab-like conditions in it. There wasn't a tube or anything to reveal stasis equipment. What exactly was that supposed human that was lying there and, by the look of it, was ready to wake up, doing there? The warning next to the screen said [HYPNOTIC DOSE REQUIRED], meaning they were drugging that human?

"You mean to tell me that there is a human in this building that is alive and has been drugged ever since we came here – possibly even before?" he asked taking his eyes from the screen and turning them to the third elder.

"Well… I'm sure I couldn't have said it better. But if it is just now that it requires a dosage, what kind of drug were they using?"

"Hump! Obviously not the good ones. If it is to keep you sedated for this long it must feel like hell. Probably heavy nothingness is the only thing you feel" he said with a minor irritation in his voice.

"Shall we go down?"

"No, I will go there. You keep an eye from a distance, Haji" he was already up and running there after checking the floor of the room. Something was bothering him. A human, modified or not, sitting for so long outside of a lab tube or a cryo-genetic stasis capsule without getting nutrients for three months at least, didn't have much chance of surviving just by sleeping. Nobles were a different story.

'But then again what if that human was a Noble prisoner? Only one way to find out.'

He opened the door and saw the figure stirring. The lack of the drug dose still hadn't fully allowed them to wake up. From the look of it he knew right away that it was actually a human. A woman. A small part of him felt disappointed as he had hoped it to be… It didn't matter now; the important thing was to get the poor thing out of there.

As he approached though, the years of training at dealing with humans generally, brought up several caution instincts of his. He would have to evaluate the situation first because, for all he knew that person could be just another mindless guard, ready to attack at anything. The figure began to move even more in her restraints. Those were surprisingly not of metal; it looked as though it was some kind of thick strait-jacket, she was on a bed and over the jacket were various simple, but rather strong looking, leather belts holding her from the neck down to her legs and feet. Now that was bizarre, as far as Frankenstein could tell. The precaution meters were over the top for a simple human being, but definitely poor even for the weakest modified human the Union would bother keeping alive for further purpose. As he approached, the woman suddenly turned her head to Frankenstein even though her eyes were still closed, and tried to talk. Frankenstein figured that after sleeping for such a long time under heavy drugs would have anyone take a while to get used of using their vocal cords again.

"Who are you?" she asked.

"Hm" he smiled as he couldn't help himself of being amused. He hadn't heard that language in a while. She then made the same question in English. He decided to humor her. "You sure talk very clean for someone unable to talk for so long"

His comment though went unanswered as she was now opening her eyes that were getting used to the light.

"Where are they?" she asked.

"They?"

"Where is my family?! You promised I would see my family!" She started screaming and trying to fight her confinements even more.

'This is getting irritating, I don't have time for this' Frankenstein thought. He had half a mind to turn and leave her there but then he thought of his master. He wouldn't be pleased if he knew what he was thinking of doing. He would encourage him to help her; she obviously didn't know what was going on.

"I am not your enemy." He said with finality. Then he thought that perhaps he could have used more details in his sentence. But to his big surprise, she looked like she actually understood because she started calming down.

"Huh… I'm so tired. They don't give me anything" she sounded like she was more talking to herself than him, as she finally turned to the blonde man again taking his appearance and feeling his presence. Frankenstein then thought that her own attitude changed as he felt her more focused and more in control. He looked at her straight in the eyes.

"What don't they give you?"

"Water…Food… It's their way of keeping me here…I can't…I don't have much power as you can see" she nodded to the limitations. But then she continued "You…You have a dark power in you" she said with her face full of certainty. "It must be…tiring".

Frankenstein then understood that the person in this room had much more awareness of any other human he encountered lately; modified or not. But then again after his last battle, the Dark Spear was emanating much more malice than before.

"Oho! You figured that now? How perceptive of you. And here I thought you were way too tired to even speak" he mocked. Oh how he missed playing with his opponents.

She sighed "I can't help it. It's like an odor that sticks itself to your nose. Quite annoying".

His face twitched in irritation but he let it pass, for now.

"How did you know that? Answer me and I will think whether I can release you."

"I can connect, somehow. Heh, even I don't remember the details. They never told me much, you see. But once my awareness is on, if I want, I can seek connection."

"Connection with what?"

Her breathing was becoming thin.

"I'm tired. Give me water. I want water. Please."

"How can I trust you?"

"Just give me water. I need to have my strength otherwise I'll die."

"And what happens when you have your strength back? How are you going to use it?" He insisted, feeling his patience run thin. He didn't know what she would be able to do once in full power and let's not forget that there must have been a reason for the Union to take such precautions. Weird combination of precautions though;

The only thing heard in the room was her constant breathing. She sighed and let her face fall back to the bed.

"Alright, I'll tell you but know that I don't trust you either. All people ever did to me, since they took me, was using me. So I won't answer anything until I have some water"

"Hahaha. Funny that you demand things, especially if we consider that you can stay here alone for all I care. I don't need you right now and quite frankly I believe I spent enough time here"

"Really?" she said "Then why did you come here in the first place? Why did you stay to converse?"

"Call it…curiosity. But now that the show is over I better go back to more important things I have to do" he turned and left. But before he closed the door he heard something.

"How do I know that you are not like them? They didn't keep their word" it was barely audible but he heard it.

"If I can promise you anything, it's the fact that I am not like the people of the Union."

Something in his voice then convinced her of the truth in his words. She wasn't sure if the awareness was to blame but she suddenly felt like that statement was enough for now.

"What's your name mister?" she asked. She would not spend energy by trying to sense his energy. She was so tired.

"My name? Well how about you give me yours first? After all, it's common courtesy to tell one's name before you ask another's, right?"

"Sara"

"Well Sara, my name is Frankenstein."

"Will you actually listen to me, Frankenstein?"

"Of course."

She then felt relief...

"But perhaps later." he added and went to close the door behind him.

"Wait, where are you going? Frankenstein! Don't go! I will talk! Frankenstein!"

But the door was heard closing and then everything was quiet again.

'That bastard! He likes to tease the others. Frankenstein huh? Somehow I heard that name before he told me… Or maybe I am going crazy after all'

After a few minutes the door opened again.

"Where were you? Why did you leave so-"

At his hand Frankenstein had a big bottle of water. She glued her eyes on it like somehow she could drink it from the distance. 'Now that would have been an odd sight to see' thought Frankenstein.

"You wanted water" he simply said.

Somehow though she was convinced that he also wanted to torture her...and he looked like he enjoyed it.

"And you wanted answers. So how is it going to be? Are you going to water me?"

"Do I look like a nurse to you? Or did you perhaps think that I would become yours? Oh no my dear. I will not come in any form of physical contact with you until I know what your abilities are."

Sara was so thirsty that she forgot to be surprised with the easiness he came to her and undid the first two straps that restricted her neck and upper arms. As he was on the third one, she tried to move her arms under it. To Frankenstein's surprise it wasn't a straight-jacket that was wrapped around her but rather something that more resembled a cocoon than anything else. It was easy for her to just slip her arms out of it. And she did it, to grab the bottle that he left in front of her.

She drank almost the entire bottle in one breath. For her, it was a blessing from heaven.

"Thank you" she said almost out of breath.

"Honor our deal. I want to know who you are"

"Haven't you found out by now?"

"What do you mean?"

"The more the time passes, the more confident I get that there is another presence here except you and me. He could have been looking at my records. Am I… right?" she asked with a smirk thinking that she could surprise him with that kind of information. But the second she saw him she understood that she just gave him another clue of her abilities without even thinking. He smirked very profoundly at her.

"Intresting. So you have a pretty vast capacity of sensing people's presences. By the way do you control it or is it instinctual?"

"Why do you want to know?"

"Answer me"

She sighed as she was getting tired of explaining but she answered anyway "No, it's not instinctual. It sort of was at the beginning but as the time passes I find myself controlling it even more"

"Are there any other people anywhere in this building?"

"As far as I can tell, no"

"Where are you from?"

"I'm from the place that most people know as South. Or at least that was what they used to call it. That is after all the reason they took me in the first place. For someone that goes around the Union facilities I expect that you would know what I'm talking about."

Frankenstein had to think for a moment in order to reach the immense information about locations and the people living there. 'Hmm… South… The South What could it….Or maybe… No way…'

"Don't tell me you are from that… tribe". He said as if he didn't want to believe it. The South was a kind of code for the place that certain people would live. People that weren't accepted in the society just because one of their parents wasn't human. Still the last centuries most of them were just born after two or three generations after the last half-breeds but they were still considered of the Tribe. They were small enough not to make their presence vastly known, but big enough not to get inbred. But that was all. There wasn't much more about them. There had been times when some would live a little longer than the average humans or have better eyesight but nothing more.

"You have heard of us, right?"

"Yes, though I never thought I would get to meet one of you" Frankenstein said as he was subtly declining that the Tribe was long gone by now.

She smiled sadly "Yes, one would think so I guess. Even though we were quiet people, many of us simple humans, didn't have characteristics of nobles or werewolves, they found us. They thought we were the perfect test subjects. In the beginning only a couple people would be missing in the course of five months"

Her face was getting darker and darker the more she was telling how they were practically hunted down.

"Then, they were taking them by tens, and then by hundreds. Soon they had taken half of our population. Approximately, about one thousand people; both adults and youngsters. It was a nightmare. Our time didn't take long to come…" It felt more like a confession than an informing.

"You…What are you? We couldn't find a lot about you in the Union's database. This facility was storage, but it never occurred to us that they would store people here. My best guess is that at some point you were put in some sort of cryo-genetic stasis in order to be preserved or used for another experiment or purpose. Still they must have used you recently for my associate told me that you had been drugged another two times previously. That's pretty much it; your drug schedule. Every three months' time…"

"My abilities were not made. They were triggered to existence by an internal emotional outburst that was elicited by an external…happening" she looked like she didn't want to talk more about it. And the choice of words were so strange...Frankenstein saw that but let it pass. Still, he had to know what he was dealing with.

"Are you an empath? There were always stories about people who could feel feelings of others in an intensive way."

"I am able to…feel presences and connect with their psychological and mental situation. Not their will though; if that's what you are afraid of. I can feel and understand them. My abilities are not coming from the body but from the spirit. Or perhaps that is what the head scientist has said to me.
An empath you say, maybe. But I can read through computers codes too. Anything that has energy, I can connect with. It's like decrypting waves in various frequencies. Some are just a scripted message, like technology. Others are more complicated than that. That's the best I can explain it, or it is what it feels like ".

"The spirit? What about the state of others? Do you affect others in any way?"

She looked at him curiously. How was it possible that he knew?

"I could tell."

'What the hell?' She thought. 'Can you read minds?'

"I can feel that your energy, even though dormant, is like an open radar, that you choose whether to read or not. But it can probably also emanate itself too. My Dark Power has a similar effect to yours, although it mostly devours others than tries to connect with them."

"Scary"

"Oh trust me, my dear Sara, it is." He said that as his smirk became even bigger.

"Your smiling right now is even scarier" she said with a chill in her back.

He stood up and opened the door. He would learn more about her in the process but right now he had to go back and set a plan in motion.

"Where are you going Frankenstein?"

"I have something very important to do and you…are coming to the third floor with me"

"Are you sure that you can trust me now?"

"Oh my dear Sara, the people that I trust, are less than the fingers of my right hand" he said as he looked her getting out of the upper part of the cocoon without solving the restrains. He raised an eyebrow but otherwise said nothing and rushed out of that awful room. If she wanted out she had better been following, for he wouldn't wait for her long. He already had enough on his head, yet the puzzles to solve were getting more in number. And that weird energy of hers, it was like an opposite from his. Calmer, tranquil; he could tell because the voices, although never stopped bothering him, instead of yelling were just…less noisy. But they were now itching his brain to get away from her because they {…cannot stand that annoying presence blah!}

Frankenstein shaked his head. Sometimes those bastards were really childish.

To be continued...
