A/N: I don't own anything of the Noblesse universe. I only own my OCs and this story. Also the genres of this story are more than two but you can put only two here so there is going to be more than just mystery and drama in the future.

Chapter 2: To defeat the undefeated

At the YERAN high school-Headmaster's office

The whole thing with the school responsibilities was just that…responsibilities. Not that Tao was unable to take them but he missed playing with Ik-Han video games and solving puzzles online. Oh, how long was it since they played! Quite frankly he didn't want to know. He was beginning to understand why the boss was even crankier every time he returned to his headmaster duties after an incident that involved nobles, werewolves or the Union, in the course of the last 3 years. There was so much to do! And the school's policy was that the headmaster had the final word for everything.

'Pss! Talking about a control-freak' Tao thought as he was viewing the program for the first semester. If he was honest with himself though, he kind of missed Frankenstein; and Raizel too. He was sure that all of them missed the times when they would have a filled house full of noise and laughter; even Frankenstein. Now, there were only three of them in that enormous house. The emptiness was devastating. Seira, Regis, Karias and Rael returned back to Lukedonia shortly after everything occurred. With their home being without guidance -temporarily Tao hoped- everyone had to be there and stand by for any possible threat.

Thinking about the remaining ones, he paused and turned his chair to the windows to take a look at his comrades. The students were out and as usual most of them behaved; Until, Shin-woo threw the ball a little too off and with a little too much power, that was going to hit a freshman in the face. But Tao wasn't stressed at all for he saw M-21 reach there with a blinding speed and catch the ball just in time. To the untrained eye he looked like he came out of nowhere. But Tao knew better. With a sigh he went back to his business.

At the YERAN high school front yard

"Shin-woo, what have I told you about controlling your range and calculate the amount of power when you hit the ball?" the guard asked at the redhead boy who the last few weeks looked like he couldn't handle himself very well. It looked like he wasn't concentrated anymore. To be honest he never really was that much concentrated to begin with.

Han Shin-woo smiled sheepishly and accepted the ball that the guard had given him.

"Ah… I'm sorry Old Guy. I think it's the lack of sleep that prevents my self-control"

"Then maybe you should sleep earlier. See that this doesn't happen again. The ball almost hit that kid in the face"

The kid blushed and looked very apologetic, but after a second he smiled.

"Well, fortunately you were here to save the day, right Old Guy?"

At that M-21 lowered his eyes and his face seemed a lot darker. He didn't answer the kid, just nodded at the ball and told him to play carefully. He returned to his original spot and took the time to have a look at the whole yard, his eyes slowly following the clouds in the sky.

"Why are you looking at me with that face?" he asked Takeo who was right a few meters behind him. He didn't have to turn to know his comrade's facial expression.

"What? Now you can see from your rear too? Well that's a weird ability. It will sure help you in patrol" Takeo joked as he approached M-21. He saw that he smiled a little, but his eyes were still looking away.

"You didn't answer my question. Let me ask you another one, then. Do I look that shitty, that you and Tao have to look at me with that mother-is-afraid-her-kid -is-doing-drugs face at times that you think I don't see it?"

"Wow. That is the most I've heard you talking in one go in a long time"

"Huh…You still haven't answered. It must be worse than I thought"

They were silent for a few minutes; both of them watching the sky that was sprinkled with small clouds here and there. M-21 knew then that he probably shouldn't have asked because the answer might not be to his liking.

A sigh was heard from Takeo and M-21 knew that perhaps a scolding was on the way "M, how are you?" Takeo asked sincerely. The question shocked M-21 and even more, he was shocked by the way he was addressed, but he decided to focus on what he was asked. "Huh like that is going to be easy"

"I'm alright…given the circumstances. It's Tao you should worr-"

"I don't believe you. You are gloomier than ever, you know"

"Well, you are not looking any better too, are you?" he said with a slight edge in his voice. Takeo knew that his friend was agitated and he knew the reason. It wasn't an easy job to get him to talk about it though. It looked like his shell had doubled in the last months. He was talking even less than before, and even though he neglected none of his duties or his meals, he wouldn't take part in conversations Tao and Takeo had, unless he was asked to. They were thinking that he was just letting himself drift back and it was bothering them.

"Takeo."

That, snapped Takeo out of his thoughts and back to M-21's face that was calmer and more understanding.

"Look M, I know that we are all a little off, after everything that happened, but you…" he didn't know how to finish his thought.

"I don't mind. Not as much as you guys might think. It's just that, now out of all things I wish Frankenstein would call and say that he found something hopeful about Raizel or the others. As of the other matter…you know what I know. Tao searched extensively throughout the whole database of the Union; Frankenstein even asked the third elder as a favor to look into it too. Huh… I still don't know why he did that; with all his problems and the chaos that ensured at that phase, to find the time and strength for something like that" he spoke with an even voice. It was so even, that to Takeo it was obvious that it was a well-trained trait of his, used when he wanted to avoid betraying emotion as he was speaking.

"You know how that turned out, right Takeo?" he asked but it was a rhetorical question.

Takeo knew, of course. When the Union finally fell, with Crombel's defeat, and a few days after everyone gathered their minds and wills to look for Raizel, Raskreia, Rozaria and Kei, Tao went for a quick search in the Union's database in order to find information about the identity of the M-series of the Union's experiments. What he found however, was a complete mess. The information wasn't supposed to be hard to find but, just like in the past, he found a dead end. Apparently, after the occurrence that took place some years ago, Crombel decided to keep all of the experiments'- that he was leading - data, in his own personal files, that even the third elder couldn't discover. Or rather he found several of the files missing or pampered under the 'Anonymous' description; which the third elder called 'bullshit' as there was no way somebody wouldn't file every detail about who they had brought there for experiments.

After several days M-21 requested that they would abandon the matter until the final answers about Raizel's state were answered. And they did just that. M-21 was grateful as he would feel that they were taking too long to solve a matter of his own, in a time were more important things had to be done. That said though, it didn't mean that he wasn't irked by it. Takeo thought that he would at least lash out in the training room or something like that. That lashing never came. Instead he watched his friend closing himself even more than before like he wanted to disappear quietly in the background.

"Right now, Takeo, what I want the most, is Raizel to be found. And if that doesn't occur, at least to know what happened to them when they were hit by those damn missiles. Anything to give us a clue of what's going on"

"Yeah…I want that too M"

"Believe it or not I don't care about my identity right now as much as I care about finding him. He is after all the reason I'm still alive and kicking"

"And your comrades' wishes?"

"They….they would understand. In any case, they had comrades too; they would know how it is to hope finding that a missing friend is actually alive. They were good guys, with understanding"

Takeo smiled. Talking about his lost comrades wasn't too much of a taboo anymore.

"So please tell Tao to stop starring me like that, especially when he is in Frankenstein's office. It's too creepy" he said with more frustration than anger.

"Hahaha! I will sure do so M. But you make sure to liven up a little bit. You were the one who once told me that if you are alive, keep living and don't give up…or something like that, I don't know"

"Ah…that's right" M-21 said nochalicly. A slight breeze was coming from the north. The kids had finished their physical education class and were headed back in. The autumn made its presence more evident with each day.

M-21 wondered if he could balance himself in this life without knowing his identity. He often asked himself if a name was what he was looking for. No, it was his place in this world, for he was neither human or a werewolf, no matter how many times he have been told that he looked, felt and fought like one. And then he felt that there was no point in thinking that. In the end he was who he was and nothing more. Even so he was curious…

~beep~beep~beep~

Tao was calling them. Takeo picked it up and closed it after some seconds.

"Tao said to go to the office. There is something he wants to discuss"

"How did he sound?"

"Not upset; neither excited though…"

"I just hope this is not another what's-for-dinner meeting"

"Oh I hate those. How I miss Seira's cooking"

"Heh…I miss teasing Regis more. But don't tell him that"

"My lips are sealed"

They both headed for the office, ignorant that while they were talking, a deal, that was going to affect them, was closed in the other half of the hemisphere.

An hour earlier…At the data room

"Are you alright today?" Frankenstein asked. There had been two days since he found that mysterious girl in a storage room; abandoned, sealed with a weird choice of measurements. Now that he thought about it, the word "weird" was more appropriate to describe her. In the last two days she was rather quiet but she was really persistant to find out more information about her in the Union computers. But of course, as he told her, there were not many information about her or her family that the people that were "taking care" of her, had. Besides her skills looked to be pretty basic regarding technology, but that was something Frankenstein would address another time.

It looked like the people from the Union would wake her up from time to time and keep her contained with drugs in order to study her, make her do things or update her about the world and technology so that she wouldn't flip out every time she came back from slumber. At least that's what she said to them when she was asked how she was able to flow her energy in those last-technology machines. But, to both his and Haji's surprise, she wasn't aware of the in-ear monitors they used to have in order to communicate. She was surprised how Frankenstein learned about the absence of her files in such a short time while he had gotten out to bring her water…And speaking of water…

"I'm fine today, I told you before"

"You were quite dizzy last night"

"Well Frankenstein…" interfered Haji "She is not eating correctly for the past few days and she is malnourished"

"I know that thir- Haji. But right now don't you think that I'm having a lot of things to worry about?! The trace was all wrong and we have to go from the start! I know that I can do a lot of things but even I have my limits!"

"I am here too you know" she said quietly.

"Oh shut up!" Frankenstein said a little too loudly even for his own taste.

The comment was met with silence. Sudden, thick silence actually brought Frankenstein to understand that he was, indeed, very tired psychologically. He closed his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He should apologize, he thought but he was so tired that even that…

"I meant that perhaps I could help…Frankenstein" she said with a steady voice. The third elder was looking at her now. She had her eyes on Frankenstein, expecting his reaction. Her pupils were scanning his form and her breathing was kind of shallow, just like an animal waiting to see if their pursuer would decide to spare them or attack them. What was she more afraid of, Haji wondered; Frankenstein's reaction or his rejection of her help? She looked like she craved for his acceptance….

Frankenstein slowly released his face and opened his eyes, that he didn't realize he had closed, and looked at Sara, as she was introduced to him a couple days ago. His face indicated that he was up to no bullshit and her offer better be something good or she would find herself in trouble. But her face was still steady and getting more confident with each second passing.

"What could you do? Do you have a capacity to reach the whole globe to find him? Hahahaha…" his laugh showed that he was more irritated than amused. "And even if you could, you are way too weak now to even walk outside of the building…" his words showed that he was in the middle of rejecting her idea and his posture of going back to the big screen, was also suggesting that too.

"Then let me get to a good diet, to rest my body and mind, in order to be useful to you and repay you for freeing me"

"You cannot get to civilization by foot, and I'm not in the mood to play cook. Heh…unless Haji here wants the role"

Haji looked annoyed.

"Are you kidding me? I don't even know how to boil an egg. And to ask a question here, how are you sure you can help us find the ones we are looking for Sara?"

On the last two days Sara was briefed shortly of how the situation was and why those two were losing their minds over it. Apparently they were trying to find someone that were hit by a very strong weapon – she knew what a missile was but at the time she thought best not to interrupt the white hair guy who refused to look at her in the eye and tried to explain it like he was talking to a child – and even though they were supposed to be dead the evidences weren't enough to prove that; or at least that's what he told her, because she felt that he actually didn't believe that there was much hope.

She guessed he was helping Frankenstein, who was emanating so many different energies and emotions all at once, that she had to shut her instinct to connect with other people. But one thing was sure; Frankenstein wasn't going to stop looking all the way and with every way possible.

"I thought you said you were looking based on the energy trace one leaves. You say that once your sensors find a lead, after a while they lose it again. Maybe I will be able to find them if I try"

"Have you ever tried to look for someone? And on such a big scale at that?" asked Haji again trying to avoid her persistent stare by bringing his bangs in front of his face more.

"Well…no. But I could try. I admit I mostly go by instinct…"

Frankenstein sighed as he was now facing his desk.

"Which at the time isn't enough. You don't even know your own abilities and I doubt you had had any contact with actual Nobles or the Noblesse to even begin to trace them and I know for a fact that you cannot read a high-technology computer or any other kind of technology any more than telling if they are on or off!"

Sara was suddenly stiff and her breath was caught in her throat.

"How do you know that Frankenstein?" asked Haji. Apparently she was way too stunned to ask.

"Because she connected with the computers when she was downstairs, she told me as much, but on the way to the second floor she asked what the date and time was. If she cannot read that much of simple information how the hell will she be able to tell the difference in energy trace the machines have in their data?"

Frankenstein was not fooling around. That much was made clear not only by his intense perceptiveness but also by his absolute tone.

If she was being honest with herself, Sara didn't truly know the capacity of her abilities. She knew she could connect with technology cause she could feel the energy of electricity running through them, but all their information were in codes more than waves like it was in humans, so…she actually felt embarrassed. She lowered her head and decided not to speak for the rest of the day. She apologized with a quiet voice.

Haji went back to work. Even he was amazed by Frankenstein. Strange how that was still a thing, after all these months; he supposed that was Frankenstein for you. He didn't have that reputation for nothing.

After a couple of hours, Frankenstein got up suddenly and went to the small sofa that Sara was sitting. He approached but didn't go down to her level. His face was unreadable.

"Look at me. Now"

She slowly obeyed.

"You have to know that you are no good to me actually; and you have to accept that fact without getting upset by it. Put aside the pride and see it. You are physically weak, psychologically a mess, and your abilities are either inefficient, unexplored -which may be more dangerous- or not even controlled effectively enough. You cannot help us and we cannot, and will not, abandon our quest to help you"

She was even more disappointed with herself now.

"What did I say not to be upset with it?!"

'Am I involuntary connecting and projecting my state of mind? How does he know?'

Frankenstein gave her a serious look indicating her to stop and listen and he then continued.

"So for all those reasons, I arranged for you to be transferred away from here, in a place with a stable environment, access to healthy food and people responsible enough to take care of you but also stop you if you attempt anything weird. A helicopter will come in a few hours to take you there. You will not be treated as an experiment or a weapon but when you come back to your feet and have a better grasp of your skills, your contribution in my search would be appreciated" his tone didn't left any room for arguing.

He really stunned her, she thought. She didn't know what to make of his announcement, but she could see that it wasn't up for arguing. She knew that arguing would be stupid, because he was right; she was a mess. But she would happily try and pay him off for freeing her with any way she could.

"If you know your weaknesses, don't fret over them. Try to chase them away from you. See that you strengthen yourself to achieve your goal" his voice a little bit softer now. The tone had a teaching vibe but was still emanating power and authority.

"I will do so. Thank you Frankenstein" she answered. She would repay them and make herself useful for their mission. She stood up and looked at him as he looked at her. A silent deal was made.

To be continued...
