Campaign Against Yuan Shu Part 2
It wasn't long before the Wu army reached the opposite bank of the river and the docks there which allowed them to see Yuan Shu's army waiting for them. They had anticipated this however and before the archers could fire on them, they were already attacking with their own arrows.
"That's the way." Lu Su grinned. "Don't give them a chance to prevent our landing."
Finally, after some effort they forced the Yuan Shu archers to break ranks and flee and finally they landed their ships and began to disembark and gather together, getting their supply trains and weapons and equipment ready, even retrieving what arrows they could from the dead.
"Alright everyone, good start, we're ready to go, it's gonna be tricky though between here and Shouchun." Sun Ce remarked.
Huang Gai narrowed his eyes. "It's a straight path from here to there but that is always the most misleading. Also our allies will have got a head start on us."
Sun Ce nodded. "Well, we'll need to catch up, just be careful. We don't want to fall for any traps, if we can, let's try and liaise with Liu Bei's army, they should be north from here."
"Hmm, sounds like a good idea." Shangxiang agreed.
So the Wu army began to march, heading in a North-westerly direction, still roughly heading towards Shouchun, but attempting to find Liu Bei and his army.
As they continued to march they began to hear it, the sounds of battle.
"Sounds like it's coming from just over that hill." Lu Meng remarked.
"Yeah...think it's Liu Bei's forces, fighting Yuan Shu's men?" Sun Ce replied.
"It seems plausible...we're going the right direction." Cheng Pu added. "But be careful, something seems off."
They advanced cautiously and that was when they heard the sound of battle drawing closer and as they crested the hill they saw it. Liu Bei's forces were indeed fighting Yuan Shu's but the way they were positioned made it clear what happened.
"As I feared." Zhou Yu remarked. "It was an ambush, they walked right into it."
"That's not all, look." Sun Quan added, pointing with his sword.
From their position they could see that, sure enough, there were more troops getting ready to ambush Liu Bei's forces.
"Okay, we're going to help, Quan, lead your forces to deal with those troops not yet launching their ambush." Ce called out. "Let's go."
With that they charged, catching Yuan Shu's army off guard, they had not expected this.
"What, this isn't-!" Ji Ling, the Yuan Shu officer who was leading the ambush unit cried out.
He was forced to cut himself off however as he had to deflect an attack by Guan Yu whom he had been duelling at the time.
Composing himself he quickly called out. "Second unit, advance...Advance!"
But it was no good, for Sun Quan had already engaged and was already overwhelming them, the ambush unit had failed thanks to the interference from the Wu forces. Despite his best efforts, Ji Ling was soon slain by Guan Yu and the very few ambush troops that remained were fleeing in a panic. They quickly began to recover and regrouped and Sun Ce, along with Shangxiang and Quan, turned to face Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei.
They took a moment to talk, glad to have gained the advantage with their actions so far, their scouts had already made it clear that they were facing a clear run to reach Shouchun, Yuan Shu was losing several battles and pulling more and more troops back to the castle itself.
"Well met Sun Ce." Liu Bei greeted while bowing to him. "I am grateful for your help, we were caught off guard by their ambush and I feared we would end up in dire trouble."
Sun Ce smirked. "You guys were doing well, all we really needed to do was stop that second unit, the rest of the guys you already mostly took care of."
"Nevertheless we should hurry on." Liu Bei remarked. "Lord Cao-Cao has been doing well too, we are gathering more and more in strength while Yuan Shu is rapidly falling back. He clearly wasn't expecting so many to stand against him, despite his heinous actions."
The others nodded in agreement but with everything all set they decided to go on ahead and began marching to Shouchun. It did not take long for them to see the castle and sure enough, Yuan Shu had fortified it, his banners fluttering while his men all held the walls and within the castle itself. They quickly helped surround the castle, their encamped forces keeping those inside from escaping and soon met up with Cao-Cao.
"Good, we're all here." He remarked. "We've done well, repelled his attacks, captured his supplies, Yuan Shu is in a dangerous situation. Now we just need to take Shouchun itself and take him down, he must pay for his crimes."
They all bowed in agreement and soon they took aboard Cao-Cao's plan and were ready for their own part in it, each leader joined his army in the combined forces surrounding Shouchun, Yuan Shu's time had come, the end of this conflict was in sight.
