Chapter 8
"Release the Brain Eating Kraken"
I don't know what was going through my mind as I was flung into the air. One moment, I was dealing with this crazed park ranger who claimed he owned River Country and the next, he flung me to almost certain death. I couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen now that all of the water was gone: how bad was I going to be hurt, would I end up even surviving the fall? Could the water magically return or did those blob monsters absorb it all?
Screaming, I fell down fast and closed my eyes, once again preparing for the inevitable. Then, I opened my eyes and found that I was still alive.
"Rou Rokay, Raphne?" I heard Scooby say as I found myself sitting on his back. Apparently, Scooby had cushioned my fall with his own body, much to my overall relief.
"Thanks, Scooby," I said as I got back to my feet and dusted the dirt off of my suit.
"Daphne, you okay?" I heard Velma cry out to me as she and Shaggy arrived on the scene.
But I didn't answer and instead ran toward the two brain eating monsters that were attacking Fred and Clarice. Immediately, I ran to Fred's side, and picked up a stick to try and defend ourselves from the creature's tentacles, which didn't really work given that the creatures were far more powerful for a stick. The creature merely threw the stick out of my hands and began to pick up whatever it can use against us, deck chairs, beach chairs, wood, metal you name it. Reaching for her gun, Clarice attempted to shoot at the creature's face, but the bullets weren't going through. She then reached for her rosary beads.
"The Power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!" she screamed, trying to extract the evil spirits from the monster, who merely roared.
"Like, that's not working!" Shaggy cried as several more FBI agents arrived on the scene, taking up positions to try and shoot at the creatures, but they grabbed the shooting agents with their tentacles and began to drop them into their mouths. "We're gonna be snacks!"
But much to our relief, we could see the agents still inside. However, for how long?
…
Racing back up the stairs of Slippery Slide Falls, I noticed some sharp objects that I could throw at the creature's back. Taking one of them in my hands, I threw them at the kraken's back, but it quickly took notice and flung out its tentacles at me. I tried to run, but once again, I found myself in a bind. The creature threw me to the hard surface and then picked me up, intending to put me in its throat with the other agents.
"Let go of me, Squidward!" I cried, but the kraken wasn't listening and neither was the other kraken as it continued to grab at various screaming FBI agents. Down below, Beau positioned himself behind a tree and attempted to aim his gun at the amoeba kraken's eyeball.
Seizing the opportunity, he fired his gun at the kraken's eye and as the creature shrieked in pain from the bullet hitting his eye, he released his grip on me and I fell onto the edge of the hard, decaying pool edge. Right away, I could feel that I broke several ribs in my chest, but I had to get away. Crawling to safety, I took shelter behind a tree with Beau.
Snarling, the creatures continued their assault and then almost as quickly as it began, they jumped into the waters off of the beach, leaving the agents they had consumed lying in the empty pool.
"Where'd they go?" Velma asked, who had been throwing rocks at the two kraken.
"They must have disappeared into the beach over there," Fred cried, pointing in the direction of the abandoned beach. Then he heard me groaning and ran over to my side.
I gotta tell you, I had been in pain before, but never like this. My chest felt like it had been broken in several places which automatically confirmed my fears of broken ribs.
"Daphne, are you alright?" he asked.
"My chest," I moaned, wincing in pain as I clutched it tightly. "I think he broke…a few ribs."
Fred then turned to Beau and beckoned him over.
"Get an ambulance," he said urgently with fear in his voice. "Now!"
And as Beau radioed in for an ambulance to arrive, Fred helped me over to an abandoned pool chair and sat me down.
"Daphne, what happened?" Shaggy asked in a concerned tone as he and Scooby ran over to my side. "You hurt?"
"I think I broke…a few ribs," I gasped, still clutching my chest. "Don't worry about me, I'll survive...just like all the other times."
As I was being cared for, I saw Velma looking over towards the empty beach and deep in thought. Now it was a matter to figure out just exactly what these kraken were up to.
…
Meanwhile, Reverend Kane had retreated into a wooded area, having witnessed everything that took place.
"Those idiots," he muttered as he looked from behind a tree. "They weren't supposed to harm Daphne in such a manner, they were to infect her mind and make her easy for me to take control of her mind. I'd best see my servant about this preposterous blunder!"
Feeling bitter over having his target being roughed up, Reverend Kane disappeared, vowing to ensure that the next time he struck, he would strike in a more controlled manner.
In the meantime, I was loaded onto a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital to get checked out for my chest pains. But the two amoeba kraken had succeeded in causing damage not to me, but to the agents they had placed in their stomachs.
Soon, we would know the extent of the damages done to them.
