Chapter 12
Jack walked down the hallway towards the commissary for lunch with his adult children in tow. He soon came across Teal'c walking ahead.
"T," Jack greeted his Jaffa friend.
"ColonelO'Neill." he replied.
"Having lunch?" he asked.
"Indeed," he gave a nod. Teal'c glanced back at Charlie and Jackie walking behind them. It soon became apparent that Jack was going to have his children tag along.
Jack mentioned, "We're going to the cabin this weekend if you wanna come?"
Teal'c glanced back once more.
Jackie smiled, "Charlie and I are gonna fly the mustang."
"Mustang?" The Jaffa questioned Jack.
"They race planes. They got a P-51 mustang that they fly." he added. "Apparently, there is a landing strip there now…" he puckered in thought.
"I do not like mosquitoes." he reminded him.
Charlie cheered, "We use tiki torches to keep the bugs away. And we're putting in a barbeque."
To the Jaffa the improvements sounded entertaining. He declared, "I shall join you."
Jack grinned, "Great! Now for Carter and Daniel." In Jack's mind his perfect time at the cabin would be with his team and his children. No one else! A nice quiet time, fishing on the dock of the pond, having a cookout and enjoying the evening with his family and friends.
As they walked they soon came across Steve Rodgers who was also making his way towards the commissary for lunch. He sported the green battle dress which he actually favored to the red, white and blue superhero suit. He was familiar with military life and found it fitting for him.
Steve spied Jack leading Teal'c, Charlie and Jackie. He greeted the group, "Colonel! Captain, Major O'Neill." He gave Teal'c a nod of respect, "Teal'c."
"CaptainRodgers," the Jaffa returned the greeting.
"Cap." Jack greeted with no intention of inviting him anywhere.
Charlie on the other hand was a huge Captain America fan. He cheered, "My sister and I race planes on our down time and we have a P-51 stored on a private airfield in out cabin. We're hosting a cookout this weekend. You wanna come?"
Jack took a breath hoping Steve would say he was too busy and excuse himself.
Steve smiled at Charlie, "That's sounds like fun, Charlie. I would love to come."
Jackie smiled pleased, "We would love for you to come too." She simply adored his good looks and figured he would make good eye candy during down time.
"It will be my pleasure." he assured her.
Jack gave a heavy sigh as Teal'c noted for the Jaffa understood Jack's plans was a quiet and personal gathering. Jack would often go alone just to relax and unwind. They soon entered the commissary and went to the line. Jack listened as Charlie chatted it up with Steve Rodgers. He began to wonder if his son was a bigger geek than Daniel. He listened as Charlie started talking about the enemies of the past.
"How you defeated the Red Skull was tactical genius, Cap." Charlie mentioned gathering his food.
"It was a fight." he agreed. He recalled the men he lost in the fight along with his best friend, Bucky Barns.
Charlie stated, "I know! I read the reports." He then asked, "What did it feel like when they put ya in that machine and gave you that serum?"
Steve replied, "It wasn't pleasant."
Embarrassed the young man had to agreed, "I bet it wasn't." He then mentioned, "And that shield that Stark's dad gave ya…"
"You know all about me." Steve gathered.
He confessed, "You are one of my heroes."
Jack huffed, "I thought I was your hero."
Charlie agreed, "You are my hero too, Dad. But…you know…He's from World War Two. You know! The Greatest Generation. I never got to talk to someone who looks as young as me and fought actual Nazis, Dad."
Steve replied amused, "There was a lot of us fighting in that war, Charlie. And I've read the reports on SG-1 and your dad. He's a real a hero, son." Steve admitted, "When I first met your dad I knew he was military. If SG-1 was in that war I would have put them on my team. Your dad is a amazing man."
Jack replied surprised, "Thanks for that, Rodgers."
Steve assured him, "I mean it." He noticed Jack stopped in his tracks and was looking at a table. Sitting at the table was Tony and Sam alone and having a nice lunch together. He mentioned, "Tony really likes Sam."
"I see that." he miffed.
Steve admitted, "I don't see Sam being happy with him long term. He's a play boy and likes to blast that awful music."
Jack agreed, "She likes big band swing."
"I like big band swing." Steve added.
Jack marched himself over to the table to crash the party with his friends and children in tow. They all took a seat. "Carter." Jack greeted her. He noticed Tony rolled his eyes annoyed.
"Sir," Sam replied.
Steve noticed her eyes lit up when she saw Jack sit down. It reminded him of how her aunt's eyes would light up when he spoke to Peggy Carter during the war. Quickly, Steve assessed that Jack and Sam were attracted to one another but regulations would hinder any relationship.
Jack asked, "You wanna come to the cabin this weekend, Carter?"
I got a lot of work to do with Tony." she replied.
Steve added, "That's a shame. Charlie was telling me about the P-51 that he and Jackie keep there. I'm looking forward to seeing it."
Sam asked the pair, "You two have a P-51?"
Charlie nodded and grinned, "We are air racers."
"Can I fly it?" she nearly begged.
Jackie stated, "Sure!"
Jack glanced at Charlie and Jackie and then at Sam. He was amazed at how she jumped at the change to fly the old warbird. He figured he could use it to his advantage. "Kids will let you fly it. They have a private landing strip too."
Tony suggested, "I can bring the suits and we can do some actual flying then."
Jack gave him a look, "I didn't invite you."
Charlie countered, "I'm inviting Mr. Stark. It's my cabin too ya know, Dad."
He muttered, "I better look at that deed."
Meanwhile
Peter Quill had spent the morning irritating Daniel in his attempt to study and becomes wiser as he found he was only half human. Daniel moved down to the other side of the table to get some distance between himself and Peter's annoying habit of tapping the pencil like beating a drum against the book. It was apparent that Peter's interest laid in rock music and not in history. Finally, Daniel had enough and suggested, "Let's go get some lunch."
Peter glanced up from the large book on Plato. He eagerly agreed, "Sounds good to me." He pushed the boring book aside and stood up. He walked over to Daniel's side of the table assuming that Daniel was his new best friend. He felt lost after half his crew disappeared and the man was looking for some support. He grinned, "What we having?"
Daniel replied, "Whatever is on the menu."
Peter glanced down at what Daniel was working on. Before his eyes the ancient text instantly translated to English and he could read it with ease. "Hey! You are researching Atlantis?" He picked up the tablet. He rubbed his eyes, "Wow! That's weird. It flips from those funny symbols to English."
Daniel did a double take, "I found a few references to what I think might be Atlantis." He took the stone tablet, "You can read this, Peter?"
He nodded, "It's weird. It flips! I see these weird symbols and then it just flips to English."
"Must be the Celestial part of you translating it." he figured.
"That's cool." he grinned. "How come I can't do that with other languages?"
"I don't know." he admitted. "But if you can automatically translate Ancient to English in your mind then…" he winced, "could use your help."
Peter grinned happy to help, "That's great Danny." He patted the man's shoulder, "I can call you Danny? I mean…we're friends, right?"
Daniel corrected, "You can call me 'Daniel' like everyone else." He then recalled, "Last time I was called Danny, I was a kid."
