Mambo Venta Wilt was busy crushing herbs in her mortar and hands thin and elegant looking in their advanced age but they held such power. She was getting ready for the busy tourist hours of the evening. Her small shop located on a back alley. The jingle of the bell from her door forced her eyes up to see who had just entered her domain.
Spencer had his hands in his pockets, his satchel across his torso. He was slow to enter the shop but his eyes looking at all the items and not the older woman in colorful robes and hair wrap. The thick smoke from the multitude of incense almost burning his nose.
" I ain't be wantin' no trouble" the old voice stated firmly as Spencer froze. The thick Haitian accent cutting through the thick smoke. His eyes lifting to see the woman standing straight and looking dead at him.
" I…I'm sorry I thought you were open…" he stated as he turned to leave.
" Oh, I be open juju man…" she crooned towards him as the hair on the back of his neck stood as the door closed behind him.
" Question is…why the likes of you here seeing to Mambo Venta?" she asked and Spencer turned back to her.
" I was looking for a book. The Existential Muses" he stated and the woman gave him a very slow smile.
" Ahh…you be looking for natures fury?" she asked and Reid flushed and shrugged.
" I like to read" he stated softly. She turned and hobbled over to a shelf and pulled the book out from under another book. She held it up as he approached the counter but she did not let him touch it.
"It be you who caused dat storm las nigh.." She stated firmly and he could not help but give a nod. He had never met another wielder like her before and he knew when to be cautious, his eyes never leaving her. He could see her lips turn skyward as she gave a short chuckle.
"Not often we be seeing wielders like you …juju man" she crooned and offered him the book.
" I am investigating the murder of those children in the area" he took the book gently before taking out his wallet. The older black woman rose a brow and refused to take his card or cash.
" Bad jongo around those poor chitin's deaths." She stated and he frowned as he looked at her questionably as she went back to grinding herbs.
"It be dangerous for de likes of you to be wandering da streets of Mambo Venta…but if you be copper man trying to find dat wayward wielder….you have Mambo's blessing to wield" she said firmly. Reid's eyes widened slightly at the honor.
" That is generous of you Mambo Venta, thank you…" he said softly. She waved it off.
" You be thinking some one trying to enact natures fury? Dat be very powerful magics" she said but Reid could not answer as Hotch came through the door.
" Reid you get anything?" he asked. Reid putting the book away before turning to him.
" I was just asking…" he stated and turned back to the old woman who was staring at him.
" If dat what you be thinking…den Jack Connel is de man you want to seek for more information on dat type of ritual" she said and Reid nodded.
" Thank you Mambo Venta" he stated and placed a hand on his chest. Her eyes sparkling as she returned the gesture.
" Good luck JuJu man…" she crooned as he approached the door giving him a toothy old grin.
Hotch rose a brow but Reid just glanced at him as he walked out of the store.
" She thinks it may be connected to some shady spiritualist" he easily lied, his eyes not meeting his boss's eyes as he took out his phone and called Garcia.
" Can you look up to see if there is a Jack Connel near where we are Garcia?" he asked and she chuckled.
" Darlin' I can find a pimple on a rats ass from space" she teased, this even earning a smirk from Hotch.
" There is an Agent Jack Connel…who is on this case actually from the FBI branch their in your area" she said as Reid did look at Hotch then as they both moved back towards the SUV.
Jack Connel was a very charismatic agent. He was the rugged outdoor type that heralded tan skin and bright green eyes with blond curls that dusted his brow. A rather attractive man if Reid had any say but there was something itching in his brain about the man. He was actually on the case as well but he was running different leads.
" Agent Connel…I was speaking to Mambo Venta..and she…" but Reid was cut off.
" Whoa there now" the other man spoke in a deep Creole accent…"one does not just speak to Mambo Venta, you have to go through channels…but I do not see how that has anything to do with me" he stated as he looked the younger man over, his arms crossing his chest. His eyes then going to the other agents before looking back to the awkward young man.
Reid flustered by being interrupted again frowned slightly and took out the book and laid it on the agents desk, his hand then going back into his pockets.
" Like I said…she told me I should talk to you about this…" he stated. Connel's eyes going to the book as he stilled. The wheels in his head spinning.
" We think the unsub is trying to bring back the son of Joel Leaman, I think he is trying to prove that he can defy nature by other means"
Connel stood as he brushed past Reid and picked up a file handing it to Hotch before putting his hands on his hips.
" Only got one lead so far that would match what you just said Dr. Reid, and coming from experience…it ain't a good thing"
Rossi rose a brow.
" You know the unsub then?"
Conner nodded.
" Possibly…I never would have thought of that angle…" he stated. Reid flushed slightly as Conner looked him over.
"Dr. Reid…do you know a Dr. Reginald Fielding?" he asked rather suddenly but Spencer shook his head.
" I'm sorry no…why?" he asked but Connel waved him off.
" I just thought all genius's knew each other is all" this making Morgan chuckle.
Hotch's phone ringing as Garcia was put on speaker phone.
" There is a kidnapping in progress at the corner of Markston and 68th…the child is the age range of the other victims…there is a unit in pursuit suspect is mental ward escapee Renki Jacobs" she said as the team and Connel when into action. Reid put on his bullet proof vest as he rode in the back of the SUV, Connel beside him with one of his own.
Spencer could only watch in horror as the boy that had been kidnapped plummeted off the long high narrow bridge they were having a stand off on. Jacob's having tossed the young child as cries from agents and police as well the wails of the child. He did not even think as he sprinted to the railing and vaulted over just narrowly missing the out reached fingers of Morgan who tried to stop him.
"REID!"
He fell head first but power filling his finger tips as he suddenly was right at the child grabbing him and pulling him to his chest as a bolt of hot white lightning aimed for the child from Jacobs as water came up to meet his back so the landing was very soft, like he was being hugged. His hand over the child's nose and mouth as the water was still cold and he sank under the current. It felt like hours and like he was being bit by the electricity as he absorbed it to save the child from being electrocuted. His body jerking violently for a matter of seconds before he breeched the surface with the child who was wailing and clinging to him desperately. The current rough but he urged the water to help them to shore. His veins sang as using such power, he didn't know how he had moves so fast. The his arms holding the five year old to him as he tried to calm him still knee deep in the Mississippi river, muscles jerking, hair plastered to his face as he at the boy down and he sank to his knees on the rocky shore.
Connel watched terrified as the child was tossed but then the young doctor had flung himself from the bridge. He watched in fascination as the man disappeared and reappeared to grab the child, Jacobs reveling he was a wielder by blasting lightning at the child but Reid some how absorbing it as the river rose very high in a column to suck them in. Jacobs screamed in rage as drew a gun but the hail of bullets from the other agents at the threat dropped the child murdering wielder cold. Connel looked back down over the bridge as Reid and the child were on shore finally. Connel then went to the body of Renki Jacobs. He was a local swamp rat that always had his fingers in places they didn't need to be, the question was why was he of all people kidnapping and killing children and how had he not known he was a wielder.
He slowly took out his phone and put it to his ear.
" Dr. Fielding…yes Agent Connel, I have some interesting information for you" he stated as he walked back towards the SUV's staying out of earshot from the doctors team. All of the BAU team witness the entire event. JJ had almost fainted when Reid jumped over the railing. Her eyes wide as she witnessed the impossible from her best friend, the godfather of her child. Only when he emerged from the water did she let out a strangled choked sob laugh.
" I'm gonna kill him…I'm gonna kill him for do that!" she said as the rest of the team agreed, all glad to see him and the child unhurt.
Sitting on in the back of the ambulance after getting check over Reid looked down at his hands. His fingers felt tight like his skin would break if he made a fist. His soaked clothes did not dry as it was humid as hell right now so he was a soggy sweaty mess. Kevin, the child had clung to him until an agent brought over the boys frantic mother. Reid could not help but smile at the happy reunion. Three kids would never get that but this little boy would. Renki Jacobs was covered in power tattoos so Reid could only assume that he had tried to gain favor by invoking a great force to use for his own left leg bouncing wildly as he was almost doubled over, his hands clasping loosely off his knees. He also did not notice Hotch and Rossi watching him from a distance away.
Worry on they're faces as they watched the young man.
