An Enchanted Evening

"Kiera!" Miss Grant called from her office as I arrived on the floor.

I've only been in the building for five minutes. What could she be mad at me for already? Entering her office, I tried not to drop my things as I opened my notebook and pulled out my pen. "Yes, Miss Grant?"

"Something has come up that I can't get out of. I need you to cover tonight's gala." Rubbing her temple, the powerful woman continued before I could speak. "I'm aware you've only been a reporter for two months but you seem to be the only component reporter I have at the moment." Stern eyes met mine. "You've been a fantastic assistant for two years and have gone above and beyond for me. That's why I know you can handle tonight."

"Thank you." Miss Grant's words warmed my heart. "I won't let you down. Is there something I can help you with?"

"No. It's something personal. Here is your media pass." Miss Grant slid an envelope across her desk. "It's an enchanted masquerade so dress accordingly. Take the day to find a suitable dress and mask," she paused. "Preferably something you've not worn in the past two years. Something more adult."

Taking the envelope, I tucked it into my purse. "I have a few pieces in my wardrobe that should work."

Eyeing me, Miss Grant smirked. "Good."

Arriving at the gala, I wore my press badge and walked with authority. Channeling Supergirl kind of helps. This dress isn't my suit but it does make me feel like I can take on the world.

Taking a page from Alex, I lingered around the edges and examined the large outdoor space. High rollers from all walks of life were there. I couldn't recognize some of them because of their masks. The ones I did recognize, I wanted to stay away from.

As I glanced around the area again, a particular heartbeat gained my attention. Following it, I saw it belonged to a brunette woman who wore a black, off the shoulder dress. Her pale skin was a stark difference from the fabric. Rao. Our eyes met and my breath hitched. Who is that? Desperately needing to get work done, I tore my eyes from the businesswoman.

Mingling with the rich was more difficult than I thought. Once they found out I was with a media outlet, they shutdown any conversation and left. I did my best to demand respect like Miss Grant but fell short. After the fourth person rudely walked away, my demeanor wavered.

Making my way to the refreshments, I took a flute of champagne. Hearing the familiar heartbeat approach, I was met by curious green eyes. A soft smile curved red lips. "Evening."

"E-Evening," I stammered. Heat crept up my neck as I tried to form a coherent sentence but failed. With a nod, she left.

Throughout the night, I was drawn towards the woman in black. We kept passing by one another but never spoke. As I interviewed some of the nicer business owners, if she came near, I couldn't help but glance at her. A moment or two is all I got before she disappeared again. I'm wonderstruck by this woman but have no reason to be. Why am I drawn in by a woman I've never seen before? Her heartbeat is calming. Once I'm done, I have to find her.

Making my way to the next interviewee, I heard the heartbeat again. "You don't seem as overwhelmed anymore," she purred.

The velvety whisper caused me to tremble. Whipping around, I was met by familiar green eyes and dark red lips that curved upwards in a knowing grin. "I-I-I was, a little." Rao. Who is this woman? Swallowing, I took in the sight before me. The dress hugged the woman's figure perfectly. Almost as if it was made for her. Dark hair was pulled back into a tight bun and diamond earrings gleamed in the light.

"Are you new to reporting," her eyes flashed to my badge, "Miss Danvers?"

I shivered. "First official solo event." My mouth is dry and my heart is pounding. Is this what Alex told me humans feel when they're attracted to someone?

"Congratulations," she smiled. "It gets easier, trust me."

I do trust you. But why? "Safe to say this isn't your first?"

"Definitely not," the mysterious woman laughed. "I've grown up going to these things. The city and reason for the event changes but the people don't." Looking around, she sounded disappointed. "This is my first event in National City though."

"Bummer," I smiled sheepishly. Music started to play over the speakers and I became nervous for an entirely different reason.

"May I have this dance?" Nodding, I allowed myself to be held by the shorter woman. Emerald eyes took me in as I was gently spun. "How long have you been at CatCo?"

"Two years," my voice shook. "I was Cat Grant's assistant. Recently, I was forced into a promotion." A dark brow rose over the feathered mask. "She knew I could do better things. Help people. So she forced me to dive."

"And dive you did," she purred. Pulling me closer, the woman whispered against my ear. "I think you want to do something else." A shaky breath escaped my throat as a shiver coursed down my spine. "Let's see how good your skills are. I'll give you a week to find me. If you do, I can make your dreams come true. Help you save the world, if that's what you wish." As the music slowed, the woman dipped her head and placed a soft kiss on my racing pulse. "I'll be waiting, Kara Danvers." With that, she disappeared into the sea of people. I was haunted by her heartbeat for the rest of the night as I did my job.

The next day, I trained with Alex and J'onn under the kryptonite lights. I did my best to stay focused but all I could think about was her. I was brought back to reality when Alex landed a blow to my chest causing me to fall backwards. "Okay, that's it. We're done training for the day," Alex huffed.

"I'll leave the two of you alone." J'onn turned off the kryptonite lights before exiting the room.

"What is with you today? Did something happen last night at the gala? You've been distracted."

I should tell her. She's my big sister. "I…," How do I start this? "Do you remember when you explained human attraction to me?"

"Yeah. It was one of the nights we snuck onto the roof. Why?" Tossing me a water bottle, Alex sipped her own.

"I heard someone's heartbeat and had trouble focusing on anything else. We moved around each other the entire night but hardly spoke," I paused. "Do you remember that song, Enchanted?"

"Yeah," Alex nodded.

"It was like that almost. When we danced, I didn't want it to end." Heat rushed to my face when I thought about her kiss. "I want to find her. I've never felt so nervous and on fire at the same time."

"Which says a lot since you've actually been on fire before," she mumbled. "Wait. "She"? You're like this over a girl?" Alex paused. "Not that there's anything wrong with that. Obviously." Alex motioned over herself. "You've never shown interest in women before."

"I never thought about women until her." I toyed with the bottle in my hands. "She knows I'm a reporter and gave me a week to find her."

"She doesn't know you have an unfair advantage over everyone else," Alex laughed. "You're just going to follow her heartbeat, aren't you?"

"Pretty much." I grinned, rubbing the back of my neck. "Tonight, while I'm on rounds, I'll listen for it. Then I'll actually confront her."

"Do you know her name?" I shook my head. "Right. Only the media had badges. I hope you find her. I've never seen you like this before."

"Thanks, Alex."

Luckily, National City was pretty quiet. Nothing the police department couldn't handle on their own. Perching on a nearby building, I listened for the brunette's heartbeat. When I found it, I flew towards the business district of town.

My stomach dropped when I realized the heartbeat was coming from L-Corp. Keeping my distance, I scanned each floor until I found her. The woman from last night is Lena Luthor. Lex Luthor's little sister. Panic started to clench my chest. I'm attracted to my cousin's enemy's sister. I swallowed hard. She kissed me. Does she know who I am?

I moaned, feeling soft lips kiss down my neck. "Lena," I breathed. "Please…" Tilting my head, I gave the brunette greater access.

"Do you want me to stop?" She purred, retracting her hand.

"No." I placed her hand back on my hip. "I don't want you to stop."

Resting her forehead against mine, Lena whispered. "What do you want?"

"I want you to touch me." Capturing my mouth in a searing kiss, Lena slid her hand into my pants. Whimpering, my head fell back. "Take me to bed."

Startling awake, I tried calming my heart rate. Falling back onto the bed, I started at the ceiling. My body is buzzing. Looking over myself, I was confused by the pulsing between my thighs. What is that? It's never happened before. Images of my dream flashed before me. I need to talk to Alex.

Unable to focus, I called out of work. I desperately needed to think about things. After making coffee, I sat in the sun for a bit. Letting my temple rest against the window, I let my mind wander. I had a sex dream about Lena Luthor. I shivered thinking about how her lips felt on my neck. I want to feel them again. I wanted to kiss her. I still want to kiss her even knowing who she's related to. Closing my eyes, our dance replayed through my mind. How her hands felt. How her eyes took me in. I am so screwed.

Pulling out my phone, I shot Alex a text. 9-1-1 sister talk. It's about the woman from the gala. -K

Be there soon. Is this a job for sticky buns? -A

Yes…. -K

Pouring another cup of coffee, I filled one for Alex as she walked in. "Hey…"

"I brought reinforcements," she held up a bag. "What did you find out?"

"The heartbeat belongs to Lena Luthor." I paused as the realization sank in. "Yes, they're related."

Taking a long sip of coffee, Alex sat at the table. "Wow…"

"Yeah…" Joining her, I slumped into a chair.

"I may regret this but…have the two of you done anything besides dance?"

"Alex! No! I just flew around last night. Once I found out who it belonged to, I hovered out of sight and came home."

"And?" Green eyes narrowed. "You're leaving something out." Looking away, I sipped my coffee. "Wait. Did you…?" Alex's eyes grew. "You had a sex dream about her, didn't you?"

"I….maybe…" My cheeks flushed as bright as my cape.

"It's nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone has a sex dream eventually."

"Really?" Alex nodded. "I've never had one before."

"You've never been attracted to someone like this before," she added.

Sighing, I pinched the bridge of my nose. "I don't know what to do."

"Go after her. If you want to explore this attraction, especially if you think she feels the same way, go for it."

"Could a Luthor and a Super actually work?"

"With the right amount of communication, anything is possible." Alex paused. "It's worth a shot at least. That's part of the human experience."

"Thanks, Alex."

The next day, after I was done at CatCo, I stood outside of L-Corp and stared at the glass doors. Dive, Kara. You need to dive.

Pushing open the doors, I entered the building and made my way to the front desk. "May I speak with Miss Luthor?"

"Name?" The gentleman asked.

"Kara Danvers."

Glancing over a few papers, he met my gaze. "Top floor. Jess will let you in."

"Thank you."

Exiting the elevator, I smiled at her assistant. "Hi, my name is Kara Danvers. I'm here to see Miss Luthor."

"One moment." Picking up her phone, the young woman waited. "Miss Danvers is here to see you."

"Send her in."

"Yes, Ma'am." Ending the call, Jess stood. "Right this way."

"Thank you." Entering the spacious office, I tried to keep my composure. There she stood facing the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city. She looks amazing in business wear too. "Miss Luthor."

Turning away from the windows, the powerful woman smiled. "I knew you'd find me but that was quicker than I expected."

"You knew I'd come to your office?" I approached with caution.

"Please, take a seat." The brunette motioned towards the guest chairs. Taking a seat, I placed my bag on the floor beside me. "I thought you might, so I left a note downstairs letting them know to let you up. I wasn't sure which door you'd enter from." Tilting her head, Miss Luthor brought the balcony door to my attention. "Before you try to deny it, I know who you are without those glasses." Dark brows creased. "I'm not sure how most of the town is fooled by them."

"Because most people can't imagine a superhero lives among them." I offered. She's intelligent.

"I can understand that." Taking a seat behind her desk, she continued. "If I'm being honest, you're one of the many reasons I came to National City. I wanted to make my family's company a force for good. I wanted to help Supergirl protect the city."

Taking in all of the information, I thought about last night. "So, you knew who I was last night?" It was more of a statement than a question.

Folding her hands, Miss Luthor's heart rate spiked. "I did, yes."

"And yet, you still….kissed me." Heat rushed to my cheeks remembering how her lips felt.

"I did. I find you attractive and intelligent. You've not been a reporter for long but the stories you've done are excellent. You explain both sides of the topic to give people a rounded understanding." The brunette paused. "Miss Danvers, I'm not my brother. I don't think all aliens are bad."

Golly. If she keeps looking at me like that, I'm going to melt. "Please, call me Kara." She nodded. I tried not to fidget under the woman's gaze. "I think my cousin and your brother had it wrong. I think we could do some real good."

"I agree. If we joined our resources, either as Supergirl or as a reporter, we could make real changes for the city we care about."

"A Luthor and a Super working together?" I smiled sheepishly.

"Precisely." Choosing her words carefully, the businesswoman met my gaze. "About the gala..."

"Y-You were right." I bit my lip. "I did want to do something else."

"Really?" A slow grin tugged at the younger woman's lips. "Do tell."

Laughing, I fidgeted with my glasses. "I really enjoyed our dance."

"And?" A dark brow rose.

"Hopefully, we can do it again?"

"Come to dinner with me. We can go out or cook something together. It can be at your place if that makes you more comfortable."

"I'd like that." Reality came crashing down. "While you said you don't agree with your brother…"

"Your secret is safe with me. I don't want to cause trouble for either of us."

Relaxing a little, I sighed. "Thank you, Miss Luthor."

"Lena, please," she smiled. "If we're seen in public together, it can be as L-Corp's CEO and CatCo's best reporter."

"I wouldn't say best reporter…" I blushed again. I keep doing that around her.

"I said what I said," the brunette smirked playfully. "I do want you to know, I don't go around kissing random women," she paused. "Especially on the neck."

"I never thought you did." Shifting in my seat, I tried not to get lost in the smell of her perfume. "When should we have dinner?"

"When are you free?"

"This weekend? From what I've been told, it's customary that the inviter plans the date."

Realizing my joke, Lena smiled. "I'll give you the details when I know them." Jotting down her number, she slid the paper across the desk. "Eventually, I'd like to hear your story. I know Superman's already but I'm more interested in yours."

"I want to know yours too." Looking around the office, there wasn't much I could gather beyond the decorative style.

"I was adopted by the Luthors at the age of four. My birth mother had me in Ireland. When I was a kid, I looked up to Lex. He made me proud to be a Luthor until he went on his rampage. I can't give you too much or we won't have anything to talk about on our date."

"I seriously doubt that," I laughed. "There's so much more to you than your family's name." Something in Lena's eyes changed at my words. They were softer now. "Answer me this: do you just run L-Corp or are you a scientist too?"

"I do it all," she smiled triumphantly. "CEO, scientist, and engineer. I love tinkering in the lab."

"Then we will have plenty to talk about," I grinned. "I was going to be the youngest female Kryptonian on the science council."

"Really?" Lena breathed, eyes brightening.

I nodded. "I was three years from starting my internship with them before the planet was destroyed and I was sent away."

"I'm sorry to hear about your planet." Questions whirled behind emerald eyes. "That's incredible about the council."

"I'm not leaving CatCo," I joked.

"Am I really that obvious?" Lena flashed an award winning smile.

Shrugging, I looked around the office. "I mean, you made your intentions with my neck very clear."

"Oh, I'm aware." Getting to her feet, Lena rounded her desk. My pulse quickened the closer she came. Tilting my chin, the businesswoman entered my personal space. "I'll make all of my intentions clear very soon if you're willing." Leaning down, she whispered against my ear. "From that shiver the other night and the one right now, you seem very interested in finding out."

I cursed myself for whimpering. My dream came rushing back. "You're dangerous in a whole different way."

"I have a feeling you like a little danger," Lena purred. Standing tall, the brunette smiled softly. "I look forward to finding out who you are as both Kara Danvers and Supergirl."

Standing, I returned the smile. "I look forward to finding out who you are too. Outside of your family." Glancing to painted lips, I bit my own. Meeting tender green eyes, Lena nodded her approval. Closing the gap between us, I finally got to kiss the woman who's heartbeat I fell for.
